Could someone help me with the figuring out of gross line versus character line? sm
I have generally been paid by character line, 65-character line.  Now, I have had job opportunities offering to pay gross line but it like 3 cents cheaper than what I am being paid now.  A few places I have read that gross line is MUCH better, but is it much better if the pay is so much lower?  Please explain how it works or equals out.  This position has offered me 6 cents per gross line - what would that equal out to in character lines?  Thanks...so confused...
Figuring line count
To figure lines by 65 character line, you would take the total characters (NOT lines) divide characters by 65, then multiply that by .06.

Example: 15,000 characters/65 = 231 lines. 231 lines x 0.06 = $13.85.
Words line count is going to be different.
You need to use a program that allows you to set the same parameters for a line as the platform you are using.
It used to be that 10 words equaled a 65 count line
and the standard was that each word was 5 characters plus spaces. We are talking 20 years ago, though, and there wasn't such a thing as changing fonts. It sounds as though this company is basing its pay on this theory but not paying for spaces in this methodology. I would take the job as long as they paid me 12 cpl.
Line padding. adding extra words.

15 years ago, I charged .22 per line to big accounts. Now I have been forced down to .13 per line.
This is in part due to offshore companies, in part due to newbies coming in and underbidding to get an account but not being able to service it and then the account expecting everyone else to meet that price. The market is being driven down by many forces, and it is not pretty. I used to pay .14 per line (gross line too) and now pay my subs 0.08. It is not something I wanted to do, but something that was necessary. With only 15 MTs, I feel the squeeze more than some of the big companies out there, but cannot grow and keep up the same standards.

Healthcare in general is not the money-maker it once was, and transcription has taken a hard hit over the years.
Figuring pay. sm
You're the only one in a position to figure this out. It depends on how long the reports are, whether there is a lot of canned text on one account, etc. Keep track of your lines and hours on both jobs for awhile (I assume you're working them both now), and figure your hourly output. If you're doing a lot of short reports, such as clinic, you may come out ahead counting the headers. If the reports are longer, you need the spaces. Good luck.
Thanks for figuring your lines out, but....sm
could it be possible that they change line count specifics for each different account or isn't that possible.  Don't know the first thing about it.  Just a thought.  Also, I had a very easy account with no ESL and still couldn't get the lines.  I just moved on but I was disappointed because I liked the company but too hard to make any money. I make way better money now even at a lower line rate and less time on my butt...hmmm...
Okay, lets do some figuring (sm)
Lets say there are 20 MTs working for a company. The company charges the docs 0.16 per line. The MTs get 0.08 per line. The MTs each do 1000 lines per day, 6 days a week.

1000 x 0.08 = 80 per day

$80 x 20 MTs = $1600 a day.

$1600 x 6 days a week = $9600 a week.

$9600 x 52 weeks in a year = $499,200 a year.

Definitely need the Sted's Derm&Immuno Words and a Path&Lab Words to do derm. Lots of weirdness!

Just figuring on the number of emails

With the last count of MLSs I had heard there at around 100 (not counting MDI), I was figuring that since I received 73 emails of support for either the content of my post or disagreement with it being removed, it was the majority.  If the base number of 100 had changed, then I stand corrected.

There is some convoluted method to figuring OT.

The guy in payroll told me how to figure it once, but I forgot it.  Something about figuring your total line count, dividing it by something to get your OT lines and then multiplying it time something else.  Your OT lines are then subtracted from your total lines, so if you have the incentive bonus over 13,000 and they subtract your OT lines and it's less than 13K, you don't qualify for the incentive bonus anymore.  I used to think it was counted for all the lines, but it's not if you have OT.

Figuring amount for pay per minute
Does anyone know how to charge by the minute of dictation? I only know rates for by the line.

Probably figuring they can lure in all those that are leaving

Still need help on figuring what would be a good cpl if paid w/o spaces.

Posting on the company board and companies figuring out

who it is.  Okay, this is the topic, and the reason why I am bringing this up is there were at least 2 posts here in the last week stating they believed the company would find out or did find out they posted here and they said negative things and might get fired or did not get hired because of it.

How is this possible? Can a recruiter or boss actually pin down who is posting? What if someone says something and they are a troll and sounds like a situation which the company person perceives is an employee and they take it out on the possible new hire or employee and they are wrong?

There have been posts here in the past by company managers who say if they find out who is posting they will sue for slander.  Then, MTs come on here and assume that the companies go to the board managers and get the IP address to figure out who this is.  Even if it was a certain IP address, and they went through this whole process to find out, it could be routed through another IP address such as overseas (this is often done in the case of hiding identity).

Since this is an anon board, how can any company say for sure it is a certain person. Why would they go to the trouble unless it were given to the police or a lawyer in the case of attempted murder or threat of such?

I want to know you opinions. And moderator please feel free to comment.  Wondering if our IP addresses are given out every time a company suspects something and if so, is this an invasion of our privacy since this should be anon.  Or, is it that people are paranoid, whether it be the employee/new hire, or company assuming such.  Remember to never assume because why? You make an *** out of u and me.

Thanks for your comments.  This has been bothering me a while now, and I would like to get some input back on this issue from companies and from posters alike.

I have 11 years experience and am on 9 cents a line
and I'd say 9.5 cents per line is pretty good these days!
What about those who made 12 cents a line only a few years ago
you have no problem with reduction in pay, are you serious? making less money is truly okay with you because you sympathize with those poor administors and owners of the companies who should have the money instead.

I respect your talking about bad work habits but what type of transcription to you do, what percent ESL may I ask? You do realize it is not humanly possible to jump through all the hoops just right now to make that kind of money, not unless you are lucky enough to work on 'good accounts' which are usually saved for those who also do QA, and for new people or whoever gets or however they get it I have no idea.

you must type so many lines a day, but your quality better be 98-100% or you lose benefits and pay and also you must never complain or speak up about anything or you will get the worst dictation on the system only to have your work gone over with people who are paid hourly so they can pretend quality is what matters when we all know what really matters is the hospital saving money for the CEOs and their families.

if anyone cared about the patients, I mean truly cared about the patients as we are expected to do, the whole system would not have gone to capitation and nonprofit to a for-profit business. Halls in hospitals would not be filled with patients who have no one to help them and who lie there moaning and groaning while the nursing staff is cut back to less than skeleton crew, or any kind of ancillary service is outsourced and moved out of the hospital to save money, no matter that elderly people suffer because they may not be able to drive all over.

I could go on and on but it no doubt will be lost on where you are at.

This country seems to be becoming more 'sadistic' and less compassionate day by sorry day.

where were people like you when the money was flowing freely, were you protesting for lower pay - do you want to take lower pay right now because I am sure your boss will oblige...
Not by the line but 1400-1500 radiology reports. 2-1/2 years. nm

What line rate does Medware pay for 28 years experience but no CMT status for an employee, also
is the pay higher for IC?
They never change, 4 years ago a Xmas, they lowered everyone's line rate, I left then
NM
Made 1200-1600 per week paid on a gross line for 5 years!
It CAN be done. The key is either a really high line rate or canned text over and over again with very small accounts. I had a little of both and then some harder stuff thrown in. It also helps if you work like you are on fire most of the day. Needless to say, that gravy train ran out of juice and now I am back to *normal* pay of around $750 per week at another company. SO many variables out there with the *how much do you make?* question.
A line is a line is a line. Doesn't matter if we are talking about radiology or acute care.

1600 is not a fair minimum requirement.  Sure you can achieve 1600, it shouldn't be the required minimum.

Worked on C-phone for 10 years with 1 phone line

Means a line is a line is a line, even if it only has one word on the line
it is considered a line.
In other words
at least on my reports it is counting each character and space correctly, yet line counts remain much lower on DQS.  Numerous others have posted the same thing here.
WORDS R' US

Hello-- I do know for a fact that the company is legit, as I live in the same city as the company. Dont know much about pay, although I do remember that they pay by the dictated minute. Hope this helps!

WORDS R' US

That would be Belleville, IL.

a few words
I don't know how much you know about the internet but posting in all caps is the equivalent of screaming and you seem to be screaming alot in your post below..

Just briefly, you seem to be posting as an MT, citing your experience with platforms, difficult QA programs, transcribing off the clock - yet you write about concerns that are definitely those of management, getting staff to show up for work, work flow, if you can't work that shift don't apply, we created offshoring so all of you MTs out there… Most MTs I know are concerned with work pools, fair treatment, honesty, timeliness of payroll, quality of dictators, line rate, etc. I have enough respect for the MTs and management that read this board to be able to intuit whether you are an MT or not or exactly what the motives of your post were; maybe to score points, I don't know, but whatever your motive, your post does not address my post at all..

In a very few words without any caps I told the MT asking the question about my experience. My post was truthful and I went out of my way to tell her that my experience didn't mean it would be the same for her and even indicated such things are hard to determine. I don't know if she was an Editor or MT I posted to warn someone who asked for guidance about my experience simply because I wouldn't want anyone to go through what I and others have. And I would want someone to give me the same heads ups if I had asked for guidance on a board about a certain company. It was measured, thoughtful, and brief and not an embellishment or downright lie to make a company look bad. I think you took care of that pretty well with your post.

I am not going to get into any debate with you or follow up any response you might make as you seem to have a lot of anger you are carrying around and maybe even an anger management problem but mostly because you seem to deal in absolutes that most reasonable people do not. Because you don't know of a situation does not mean it doesn't exist, because you have not had a similar experience does not make it an embellishment or lie, but mostly your generalizations and judgmentalness are breathtaking. MTs brought offshoring on themselves, download work and then go shopping, do laundry and dishes all day - that's a lot of laundry and a lot of dishes! - most do not take their jobs seriously, no work ethic, go back to the doctor's office and on and on… I just know that my experience has been MTs, editors and management in the transcription field pretty much run the same as most other professions, a lot of them are serious thoughtful professionals, a lot of them aren't, and painting them all with the same broad stroke because you happen to disagree with them or with what someone posts on a board doesn't give a lot of credibility to you or what you are saying.

As I waded through your derisiveness and sarcasm and anger I just felt bad for you and maybe you ought to think about the fact MT might not be for you…and if you are a member of Alltype management, oh wow…

I just used above the same words like you did here
Working for MQ seems intolerable to me from just what I read from their postings here. My work, for the most part, is smooth, nothing like only allowed 3 blanks (I would be in a tizzy then because of our ESLs) and so on. I cannot believe people actually want to stay there. What is the big draw?
don't stick by their words
There is way too much of that in this industry.
Thank you. I think those are just made up words.
unfortunately
There is a Google box right under the words
type in what you want to search and then click the circle beside 'mtstars' located right below the Google box, then search. This will bring up archives on your topic, if there are any.
You have to be kidding. Per your own words, DR

is not the best. Any poor MTs coming from MQ have been beaten to death by now - they don't need another company that is not THE BEST. Let's see - what was I being tactful and leaving out? It takes 4-ever and a day to actually start - criminal background checks - yeah, I know, no big deal, but still creepy - physical exams, and plenty of other hoops - probably a month to get started. Computers were garbage and platform was down often, though none in my account received 1 cent of downtime pay. Platform antiquated and also allowed for prime cherry picking. As a newby, I used to watch the good work get sucked right out of my pool from my coworkers. Backstabbing galore, office politics, no supervision whatsoever. Pay was on the low side, but was told it was due to how great hospital accounts were - not really. MTs expected to adhere to a strict schedule - quality of work was poor as we got hospital leftovers from inhouse staff. DR also has had run-ins with the labor board and were found guilty of whatever it was they were caught doing. So, yes, let these comments scare you - check the company board archives - always lots of negative about DR. In fact, this is the first time I have ever read positives, so I honestly suspect its their recruiter trying to snag some newbies. DR was even posted about just last week - go thru pages and search for them. Good luck to you! Definitely not a good replacement for MQ. If you're close to the breakdown point, as I was when I left MQ, DR is likely to push you right over the edge.

Thank you so much for the kind words!
:-)
I want to thank you all for your kind words SM

and suggestions.  It means a lot to me.  I'm a pretty optimistic person, so I believe something better will come along...but it feels good to share my frustrations with those of you who have been there, done that, and got the T-shirt!

I better go to work!  Have a great weekend everyone and Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there.

Just Me

Your words are obviously heartfelt,
but it might be time to consider another career if you feel so dehumanized that you consider yourself a machine. Best wishes.
Perfect words! sm
I guess I needed someone else to validate for me that it might be okay. Although you'd think my hubby and three children would be enough to do it for me:)  I too am having a very hard time with the testing for other large companies; that is why I was surprised and even a little leary that I passed this one, almost too easily.  And yes, the experience on the resume would be big!  My next project for tomorrow tho (while waiting to get info that I probably won't receive for one reason or another) is to test for Amphion...been interested for awhile so what the heck. Thanks again for making me feel okay!
Thanks all for the words of wisdom. Nm

I just have ten words on the subject....

Anybody ever hear of or work for this company in E. Brunswick, NJ?  Raymonde Pozzolano is the owner.  Need info ASAP.  Thanks!
Why Ortho Words?? sm

I most times start with Google and then make sure it is spelled correctly by looking it up in the medical dictionary.  I also use a Word Book that just gives medical words but no definitions.  That helps to narrow things down sometimes too.

I'm wondering why the above poster said to get Ortho Words.  Is that a must for all types of specialties in your opinion?  I don't have one but would get one if it is helpful.   I do Radiology so you would think that would be good for me anyway.  Think I'm going to go to Amazon.com right now and order one.

NO GOOD WORDS
Well, Shelley, then maybe you can help me get the money I am owed from them for services all the way to May 1st and up through the present date.
