A post from May said 7 cpl and they use Emdat software. nm

pay is on time, Emdat platform used to be sm
buggier than all get out according to friend who used it but don't know if it's fixed - her pay got cut about 30% when she went to Emdat because it's set up to benefit the MTSO (normals, headers, etc.). She ended up dropping it after it crashed her computer. Also use Transnet/Dictaphone platform - they take $10 out of your invoice for rental but you are responsible for fixing the footpedal, etc., if it breaks (which doesn't quite fit the rental concept nor the IC concept). They change their policies about every other month so you just have to go with the flow and whatever the QA person du jour says (lots of changes there too). If you get a great dictator you'll have it made - just do your work and ignore the occasional e-mails complaining about late TAT, AAMT standards, etc. which only seems to apply to a few MTs but gets broadcast to everyone (really ticks off some of the MTs who get their stuff done on time, etc.). Judging by what gets posted here, it's a better MTSO than most - just be sure you are happy with your account and platform.
There are so many MT jobs available that I feel we will be needed for a long time. There may be
some updating, but that will be fine.  I feel MT will be here many, many years to come!!!!!
Yes, they are now hiring part-time MT's but only where absolutely needed. sm
They tried going to FT only but decided that was eliminating some good/great MT's.

I was told that the reason they were trying to only have FT MT's was that if someone worked FT for a different company and PT for them, they were burned often when the other company needed OT or schedule changes and that the KS lead MT's were left without coverage.

I started FT and went PT for family reasons and do not work for another company. I hope to go FT again in the future, but they worked with me to find a schedule that worked with my situation.
EMDAT is good
EMDAT is a very good platform.  The people that do not like it never learned it.  I also hated it in the beginning.  It's not that EMDAT is bad; it's the fact that it is a change from what they've been doing.  A friend of mine makes more per line, but I make much more money than her.  The demographic screen is already filled in on each job.  That alone gives me two lines before I even type a word.  The expanders are wonderful, and there is no need at all for an additional expansion program of any kind.  And I've read several times that the spellcheck/dictionary is just awful.  It is NOT if it is set up correctly!  EMDAT's tech team is easily accessible and get back to you very quickly if not at the moment you call.  They will walk you thru any and all steps.  If your spellcheck is not catching words, something is wrong.  I'll get arguments I'm sure, but I've worked on this platform now for three years and wouldn't want to go to anything else.
Luv it. Needed a good laugh. thanx.

Post from 2005 said you needed a Cphone and you HAD to buy Workman's Comp insurance to work

No MT experience needed for test, really. Just good reference materials.

I am looking into changing fields..from MT
to coding but don't know if at 53 I'm getting too old to switch OR if coding will go the way of transcription as far as being computerized. I know MQ has new transcription/coding computerized equipment but I'm hoping and praying billing and/or coding will continue to be done by humans for a while. I just don't know that much about billing/coding now to know what the field looks like but I've contacted a couple local schools about classes.
90 is short, even in other fields. Some are one year.
My husband is an engineer and had to wait one year for benefits.
There a lot of companies in other fields that administer psychological sm
testing as part of their hiring process, as well as personality tests, physical exams, drug screening, credit checks, etc.

I would not want a nut case having my personal medical records in their hands. Who knows when they will blow?
Just to clarify. I am limited in the number of fields ....sm
that I have experience in.  There are areas of this profession that I know very little/nothing about.  I do not pretend or present myself as having it all. However, I am well trained in the areas that include my clients.
ChartScript is very user friendly. The only fields in the
demographics section that I need is the dictating physician's identification number.  It's a good program, with flaws like any other, but again, user friendly including very extensive, excellently written tutorial.
I agree to disagree with you. In many fields wages

have not really changed that much over the last 10 to 15 years, however, in my case, as well as many, MANY others, the wages in this field have changed drastically.  They are still changing as evident on the job board most days.  While I have been a MT for over 20 years, fifteen years ago I was making 15 cpl and today I am at 8 cpl.  I feel like I have every right to be angry about this and had you taken a cut in pay as such you would be angry as well.

As far as VR, I have no experience with it and hope that I never do but I am not stupid enough to believe that it will not ever happen.

As far as our jobs being sent to India, if you cannot get pissed off as a MT about this and seriously have no fear that your job will be sent there, then at least as an American and a patient in the healthcare system, you should be pissed that patient's personal information is being sent to another country, as well as fellow Americans are losing their jobs.  All, IMHO.

I've been there quite a while, pay on time, growth spurt right now, so good time to get on board,
new accounts and lots of work, and before someone says it, I'm not management, just an employee.
From time to time those paper checks aren't good!
nm
Hired by Emdat or using Emdat software?
I was of the impression that Emdat was software, not a transcription company. Were you hired by Emdat to do transcription for Emdat customers? Or is the company for whom you work just using the Emdat software? Thank you.
Personally, DSG is a good fit for me. Pay is good and on time, sound quality depends on the account
and I like the platform. There is not much weekend work, although sometimes is available.  I get along well with the management, no major complaints.  There is pay incentive once you get over a certain number of lines in a pay period.  I work as an IC, so can't help with benefits, insurance questions, etc.
Does anyone recommend a pretty good company that is good to work for, pay always on time and plenty
of work.  I know that is asking a lot, but just curious?
way I figure, if u have time to post here, there's time for FB.

Thank you for taking the time to post this! Appreciate it!

I think at one time I saw you post that you worked
for the same company I do in FL.   Only, if you work for them I want a raise - LOL.   I am an employee but don't make that much, but I do have some bennies, so maybe we don't work for the same company.
It is inside the post, at the time. nm

Yes, I'm sure the managers have time to sit and post sm
all the time - like they don't have better things to do all day??? You are silly. Just ask your STM instead of being so doubtful.
excellent for you to take time to post. sm
It does not apply to me but it WILL inform many I am sure.

Thanks for helping other MTs find their way through a difficult process. Why should anyone need to accept that term, MISCONDUCT if innocent as you and many others have clearly been. GOOD JOB reporting.
How have you put up with this place for any length of time?!! Wow...can you post their
s
IC I will post one more time and be done. I was audited years ago

and I was niave and only payed federal and not social security taxes because I had also worked a regular job on top of IC job.  My penalty and interest was more than the tax I owed!  I learned my lesson the painful expensive way.

I was told that IC status is a red flag for the IRS and they will go over your return looking at your deductions and if you don't pay social security tax at the proper rate, it is another red flag.

Now with Turbotax it is much easier to understand taxes on your own.  Even if you use an accountant I think it is good to go over it yourself and get an explanation so you understand what you are paying because as the IRS said to me ignorance is not an excuse .  I claimed I did not know what I was not aware I had to pay the full amount and they did not buy that excuse at all and slapped me with 3 years of interest and penalties!

Above post asks do you get paid for your TIME to

People post that info all the time.

What happened to my post? The last time I checked in, there were no responses. sm
I had asked which companies did not require working Saturday or Sunday.  Thanks for your help!
but a great post - my company gets bashed all the time too.
nm
Only took 5 min & my post re:dont waste time emailing
.
I'll help! I left MQ at the time of this original post
I found a great job with a great US company, and have my self respect back. Enjoy my work again.  Go USA!!  Go MTs!!
Good post
These are all things many MTs apparently don't look at. Low rates offered because you can work at home. The only thing you save is commuting cost. They save tons and tons. You should be getting pd more for at-home work, not less.

From what I see in the MT world, these folks are so busy trying to undercut each other's prices rather than acknowledging the amount of education needed to do a good job and getting higher rates.

Did you know that the AAMT was trying to get legislation passed that will prohibit anyone not certified by them from working in the field? You think about that next time you think those little initials at $350 mean something.
Good post. (nm)
(no really - no message). :oD
Good post!
Totally agree with you, Sally!!

Good post...

Good post.!
''language barrier''--LOL.
Good post. One has to have...
a cushion in this business. If you have done this work for any length of time you should know that there are times of feast or famine. BTW, love Dave Ramsey, hubby and I are going to see him in a couple of weeks. He has good, sound advice regarding money management and not living beyond your means.

Good Post
You've got some valid points. I am definitely one of the wounded from MQ, but to be honest, I have not been with TT long enough to encounter any major issues...and for that matter, I never really checked my lines at MQ either. I could have been totally ripped off and never knew it. To me, it is of great comfort to work where I feel appreciated, and yes....part of that is a result of the wounding.  I guess maybe my head is somewhere else....I am second income, I don't want to dig that deep to make sure I am getting every single penny and line. I come from the Good Ol Days, when a line was a line and boy....did we get paid well, from the days of Pica and Elite, and everyone got Pica, because that was only 10 characters to an inch. Any of you newbies out there won't understand what the heck I'm talking about....but those were the days. I feel sorry for all of Veteran MTer's, who knew the day of $1000.00 a week paychecks...but those days are gone.  We were so busy making money then, that the technology just went behind our backs and kicked our butts. So, well....what do we do about it? We could be a nurse, or we could go out and start looking for another career at our ages. Me? NO THANKS! I'm happy and content, and feel blessed with TT that I can still sit in the comfort of my home (making half the money I used to mind you), but TT still has that MA and PA type feel. I love it. Go back to work and put up with peers? NO THANKS! Sometimes when I read these boards...I reinforce my feelings as to WHY I still work at home and make half the money.  Okay....enough running on. Gotta go. Gotta work later. Gonna go pay some much-deserved attention to my family that they never got when I worked for the Q. Bye-bye everybody. Have a blessed day.
Very good post

You bring up some very good points.

The big picture is quite scary.  I experienced Katrina on the coast, and I kept feeling like I was in a war zone, the devastated environment, the (temporary) martial law in effect, confusion and chaos, reporters obessing on certain story angles and completely ignoring other more vital ones, and all the bureaucratic bunging before during and after....and I realized America is not equipped to handle big disasters, yet we remain in denial and have learned very little from that experience.

Yes, we pay lip service to privacy with HIPAA regulations for ourselves, then send our medical records overseas where the laws don't apply.  Every time I am made to comply with another restriction to satisfy HIPAA, I wonder why we bother - so we can delude ourselves that everything is safe and secure?  We KNOW it isn't.  God forbid I should copy a medical record (without patient identifiers) in order to do a better job tomorrow - it might be a privacy violation! - but its perfectly fine to send it overseas where some disgruntled person can email it all over the world with no legal repurcussions!  Or use it for dark political motives, should the record belong to someone famous, or get rich tattling the details to a tabloid.

Its insane that we voluntarily give up more and more freedoms in this country to artificially bump up our sense of security, while undermining that security in a big way by deliberately giving other countries the opportunity to take our jobs, take our private information, and take our way of life, piece by piece.  Why are we doing this, and why don't we stop?  Are we so short-sighted that we blame the economy for our economic woes without realizing that we are undermining that economy by giving our jobs away and buying cheap imported products?

Why doesn't anybody see the cause and effect?  They outsource a job, someone here loses theirs, has financial woes, has to get by cheap, purchases cheap imports, which causes a local factory to go belly up or outsource, and the spiral continues downward.  Who will be the consumers of American products - the foreigners who took our jobs?  Or will there simply no longer be American products, and no American jobs as a result?

good post
You hit the head on the nail.
Good post!!

I'm always amused at the posts wanting info on the same companies over and over again.  Most of us who have been in this business a long time  have a fellow MT working for just about every MT company so it is easy to get the poopy-scoopy first hand.  Just look at the views on the jobs board.  I wager most of these views are not from 30 year veterans!  The companies do not care who does the work or whether it is fair or not.

I would never tolerate being out of work either.  My contract (or employment) was between myself and the company I worked for, NOT with my fellow MTs.  Has nothing to do with being selfish or considerate.  If you don't take the work when it's there someone else will do it and keep right on doing it so likely you will never have any work.

There were a number of factors that made me make the decision to retire.  Probably would have gone to work for another company, even considered it, then I got the poopy-scoopy from an insider that said that  heretofore good company was on a downhill slide.  So I'm done with it.  MT is no longer a desirable career IMHO.

Very good and thorough post, and you are
can you help me with my problem above?  LOL.  All kidding aside, I truly believe in books of labor practices, somewhere, there must be something that prohibits employers or management from posing as lower level employees and misrepresenting the aspects of their job.  I just have to find it and I will.  Liar, liar, pants on fire!
Now YOURS is a good post! sm
The companies don't *owe you* a living because you can't make ends meet. You either get better at what you do (work smarter, not harder) or pick up extra work with another company. You can't expect them to pay you for NOT WORKING because you can't make money.

The handwriting is on the wall in this industry and if we don't all change and adapt, we should get into another profession.
good post.

Good post.

I know someone who was just hired though.  I also remember the threads on the newcomers only able to transcribe 5 reports a day until they were off QA.  Oh yeah, I totally see that as looking out for your contractors...  NOT!  I'd go broke!  If I'm not mistaken, Transcend pays their employees during their training period an hourly rate.  Now that's what I call looking out for the newcomer!    I don't work for them either.

Everyone knows you get more bees with honey!

No, they are not the only company out there that hires great MTs, are nice - which is important to so many on this board, and give you flexibility.....  You just have to look for them; that's all....
