Advice needed on applying for jobs due to quit
I had hoped I would not be in the process of looking for another job but here I am.  My question is this.  I left my last job of 3 years as I lost my father about a month ago whose health began declining on Thanksgiving.  My employer was well aware of this as a doctor's excuse to excuse my absence was unacceptable and our doctor had to fill out the FMLA paperwork which still ended up not being good enough.  Go figure.  I called my supervisor the morning that I found my father and told her what had happened and I could not work.  She said that was fine and went on to explain that the company gives three day bereavement pay which honestly was the furthest thing from my mind.  She then asked me if I thought I needed 3 days off and had I not been in shock, I probably would have let her have it.  Hello, this was my dad not my dog.  How heartless can you be?  She said with work volumes (which by the way, they were telling other girls to flex their shift due to low work volume) they could not have me out three days.  I was soo upset after her asking me that that I sent an email to human resources and the head of the company and boy was I reamed out by human resources for doing this as she said it was none of the head of the company's business.  Why not?  It is one of his employees who said this.  In sending my resume and filling out applications, when they ask why I left this heartless company, what do I say?  Am i being unreasonable and maybe should have stayed with this company?  I'm questioning myself alot lately but still not sleeping well.  I have filed for unemployment.  I live in Pennsylvania and I pray that I get it because we have a 9 month old daughter and we need the income.  I know if I have to appeal it, I will not hesitate.   Forgive me for rambling, maybe I just needed to vent, I don't know.  Just needed an opinion or advice.  feel free to e-mail me.
No long distance needed
It is all done over the internet, easy to use voice player and you can type in either WP51 or Word to type in, done in batches (very productive).
Is this the branch you have to pay your own long distance for? Is a C-phone needed? nm

perhaps these lower 7cpl jobs feel you are overqualified. These (sm)
are usually newbie positions.
The newest jobs here are offering us less and less! Makes you feel like so much trash. nm

i work 3 part-time jobs now. it can be confusing if you are learning both at the same time, but sm
other than that not a problem for me. best to get one down before starting to other or you might become overwhelmed.
I have one full-time job and 2 part-time jobs. It can be tricky at times, sm
but at least I now have plenty of work always. I have some big financial goals, and right now that seems to be the only way to accomplish it.  I can't see any reason why it would not be legal -- why would you say that?  I am cheating no one, except myself (out of sleep and a social life).  Fortunately, I am single with no children or anything.  I cannot imagine doing this if I had a family.  At least my dogige understands.
Hayseed, it won't be long until you feel sm
relieved to be transcribing verbatim. AAMT approves light editing, but an MT must KNOW how to do that. The newer MTs are not experts in grammar like we were required to be BEFORE becoming an MT. Mention the parts of speech to new MTs and you get a blank look in response. Talk about diagramming a sentence, and you might as well be talking nuclear science. Like you said, the boss is the one who signs the check. Our job now is to transcribe what they say, and it's up to the dictator to make him/herself clear.

We're no longer being paid enough to assume responsibility of transcription AND editing.

Good post, Hayseed!
I feel for you. (long message inside)
I just recently left a job where I was getting paid hourly plus production to make a lot less. It sounds absolutely crazy, I know, but I was a stressed out basketcase. They got a new operations manager not long after I was hired who was not happy about them paying a few of us hourly. They hired a couple of people for each shift and paid them hourly because the account had a lot of downtime and very short TATs on their jobs. Bogging people down with a secondary was causing the work to go out of TAT too much, so they finally decided to try the hourly plus production thing. It was working great. We were happy, the client was happy, and all the work was getting done on time. Anyway, the new operations manager was absolutely horrible and started doing all kinds of stuff that made me feel like the hourly was going to be taken away any minute. Without that, the company didn't have enough to stay for. Each day you were hearing about more stuff happening/changing. The communication was horrible.

Anyway, my point is that you can't always go by money. No or low stress is worth a lot of money to me. I know the bills have to be paid, but your health and well being are more important than any amount of money. It was very hard for me to decide on which company to go with because I had several offers. I prayed about it and took a leap of faith that I was making the right choice this time. Only time will tell, but I feel very positive about it.

Things that should be considered in addition to pay rate per line are: Cost of insurance, paid time off, schedule offered, does the company outsource (an important issue for me), what the minimum quota is, is overtime offered/expected, and is quality as important as quantity to them. The company offering a higher line rate may cost a lot more per month/pay period for insurance, which could end up balancing out the 2 cpl. Who offers the best PTO? To me, the PTO offered says a lot about how the company treats their employees. If they expect the push, push, push for high production but never want to pay for their employees to have well-deserved time off -- I don't want to work for them. I don't like being treated like a number that doesn't have a life away from the computer. Will you be expected to work a lot of overtime or will it be on a voluntary basis? Which one offers a schedule that works best for your lifestyle. I hated working every weekend, and while it was hard, I found a company that was willing to offer me a daytime M-F shift.

Anyway, just some of my thoughts that I hope will help you in your decision. I wish you the best of luck. God bless!

Sorry this turned out to be so long. LOL I actually stopped myself and could have said a lot more - believe it or not!
What really sucks is that I looked for a LONG, long time -sm
before joining DRC - wanted a highly reputable, not-too-big co. that was LOCAL, and that treated its MTs humanely. I'm very happy with DRC & had planned to stay with them permanently.
Yes, they are now hiring part-time MT's but only where absolutely needed. sm
They tried going to FT only but decided that was eliminating some good/great MT's.

I was told that the reason they were trying to only have FT MT's was that if someone worked FT for a different company and PT for them, they were burned often when the other company needed OT or schedule changes and that the KS lead MT's were left without coverage.

I started FT and went PT for family reasons and do not work for another company. I hope to go FT again in the future, but they worked with me to find a schedule that worked with my situation.
Pay suposed to be good per 5/06 post, but at that time you needed Emdat and had too many fields
s
Sometimes I feel like that, but most of the time
I've managed to come to a place where I know this is what I have to do for this amount of time & try not to overthink it. In between reports, I'll either stand and stretch and watch a minute or two of TV, or search for something on the internet, or listen to part of a song, just to give my brain that minute or two break.

When you consider people with 'normal jobs' get to walk around and visit, take breaks, do different tasks, etc., and we have to go 90 miles an hour all day long every day doing the same exact thing, that's what makes this job so tough, and I think the only way to keep your sanity is to take those minute or two complete brain breaks throughout the day...
Don't have time to respond right now, but feel

free to e-mail and I'll answer some time tonight.    I've been told by someone else that the only positions they are hiring for currently are 10-hour shifts Friday-Monday, 2nd and 3rd shift.

Part time jobs
Are you using your own equipment and working from home? If so, I don't see how their request can be legal. If you work your committed shift, it should be none of their business what you do from your own home on your own time whether you want to do another part-time job or go to the beech. They do not own you! You cannot embarrass yourself on this board. The majority of MTs on this board care what happens to their fellow MTs and are very understanding.

I don't. I trust the software and feel it is a waste of unpaid time.

Part time flexible jobs
Can you share? I am interested in part time evenings and weekends. Thanks, Lucy
I have worked 3 jobs at one time on the same computer....sm
By luck 2 were using Dictaphone Word Client and the other was a Word-based program that did not conflict with Word Client. I just had to manually change the server info for the Word Client jobs, but everything worked together just fine. I was thinking of switching to a different company, but their VPN fought with the VPN I had to use for the one company, so not able to switch, but it can be done, if all the software will work together. I also have put a mobile hard drive rack in my computer and have 2 hard drives, so I could put one company software on the one hard drive and the other company on the other, it is a pain, but that works also. What really works the best is 2 computers and a switch box, but most companies are not sending computers any more, so that may not be an option. Good luck.
I had my longtime pt time job and learned 2 new pt jobs.

Question about two part time jobs

I currently work for a low-paying company who are basiclly okay otherwise, but have in their work contract that all your transcription time must be for their company (even above your committed hours).  Since the pay is so low (I'd mention it, but don't want to embarass myself on this board), I've been considering accepting a part time job as well anyway.

My question is this, Is there any way the first company could find out if I don't tell them?  I've been applying elsewhere, but just have not found another full time MT opportunity yet.

I like to work 2 part time jobs. sm
I don't like to put all my eggs in one basket. (Easter eggs LOL!)  That way if I lose one I still have one to fall back on.  Been burned too many times between offshoring and VR.
Are most part-time jobs with companies a few hours every day or are there
jobs that exist where you can work a few days during the week? If you can help, thank you!
Work both jobs for awhile, part time for the new one. Most
of the MTSO will understand your reluctance to quit your old job until you are sure the new one will work. I have worked for two companies in the past year and told both that I would have to work part time until I was comfortable quitting my old job. I ended up keeping my old job because the new ones didn't work out. Also, 1 cpl decrease in pay isn't that much to make up if the work is good. Hopefully, you won't have to sit around waiting for work, and you can follow the BOS which will be easier for you and probably help you transcribe fater.
I have been an MT for a LONG time but
stupid old old Medrite and DOS. I just find the lines super super hard to get! My QA scores are fine, but my counts suck :( I keep building my Expander hoping it will come around but it looks hopeless. I am very discouraged.
To long time MGr no more
Mine was a chronic illness that has improved with treatment; still, I can see how HR discrimination might possibly get in the way.

I would love the flexibility. Where can I find out more about what IC status is? I have some vague idea, but no real idea of serious pros and cons. Thanks so much for your reply!
They did a long time ago
I worked at OSi a couple years ago and they used to have a supervisor who would tell people to do that but she quit working there. She told at least three people that. I heard they don't do that anymore but maybe not, she was the only one. They always had the disclaimer if you have line/time to make up in email's. Funny because she and I both work at the same company now but she is just MT at this company.
no, long time, don't let them get you down --

They're bad, not you.  You know they treat(ed) us like nothings.  It's not the profession, it's that particular company.  Shop around, find someone better.  FN's strategy is to belittle everyone and make them scrape for work.  Do like me, pick up your toys and go somewhere else.  Also, on the way out, be sure to get in your digs and burn that bridge.   They do not deserve us.  My new short-term goal:  Bash FN and show them for the money-grubbing rats they are.

I have been an MT for a very long time

I'm 37.  I raised my kids doing this on-site and from home simultaneous; my kids are 14 and 9.  I worked long hard hours.  I still work hard.  I don't have a zone and I hop up and down from my desk so as not to make my body work so hard at this, but I make good money and I get to stay at home.  I also get to see all events my children are involved in.  I take a day off whenever I want, and yes I have my own accounts.  Please don't be fooled by this 24-hour TAT.  Most practices do not require that strict TAT if you have your own accounts.  It is the online companies requiring this TAT because that's how they get their big clients.  They promise big and most times cannot deliver.

Braggin?  Naah...  I call it knowing how to manipulate and manage my time to benefit myself.  I've never taught MTs and have no desire; I hated cross training on-site and still hate teaching.  I'm just not good at it.

I'm an IC, so it's my way or the highway!!!

That's a really long time.
The company I work for sends out the checks on Monday and I get them on Wednesday, sometimes Tuesday if I'm really lucky.
I have been there a long time
Pay always on time.  Various platforms, not just Spantel, which is a little cumbersome but not awful.  I have NEVER had work taken away from me and thrown in the trash after it was assigned to me.  Management now much better.  Seems wrinkles have been ironed out, which is always needed in any growing company.  Very happy there.

You betcha we do! Here is the link. I hope we are allowed to post links here. If not, the mods can take it down and I will apologize. This has tons of stuff made in the good old US of A!

Yes, a long time ago when I used to get
my checks mailed, now I always opt to have direct deposit for that reason.  I remember the owner of the company had to stop payment on that check and issue me another one. It didn't take that long, but like you, we needed the money.  Maybe you can ask them to re-issue you a check and then send it FedEx or next day delivery since this puts you in a bind, or can they trace your check and see where it is?  Sorry to hear your news, I hope you get your money very soon :)
i have been doing asr for a long time now

i think one of the very first accounts to start it, so the recognition is very good on my account.  Also, I speed up the dictator at least 1 or 2 steps but i do listen to every word.   the only other thing i do is not use the mouse much and use the ShortHand macros for editing that are posted on community page.  i don't mind asr.  I would take an all-ASR account over no work any day.

AMEN TO THAT.. I worry all the time how fast our jobs are dwindling down thanks to work going
to other countries and more companies going to the voice recognition programs. Obviously, they will still need proofreaders and editors for the VR stuff, but not as many people. I feel like someday our jobs will just be gone so yes invest your money into nursing or something. Anything else medical is a win-win situation, just not transcription as a whole.
Its a lie, they were both in MT industry long time before they met

Ummm....I have been with MDI a LONG time
I know a lot of MDI MTs and everyone I know says how many lines they will do on any given day, but they are NOT required to work specific hours.  As I said, I've been with MDI a long time and before that I was with Signal, which was also Dorothy's company, and it worked the same way.
I worked for MQ for a very long time. sm
I really loved working for them until the recent changes, and I agonized over my decision to leave. Now that it is done and over with, I can honestly say that I feel I made the right choice. However, now I find myself desperately searching for that job that I can settle into and be happy with, and hopefully outdo my 8 years with MQ. I definitely don't enjoy changing jobs.

I worked for them a long time ago.
Left in 2003. They were nice enough to work for. Not sure how it is now.
I also have known her for a long time and that just does not sound like her IMO. nm

Been MT'ing a long time.......
In the good old days companies were smaller and run by managers that were actually MTs and could relate to their employees. Now most have been replaced by managers with business degrees, little or no MT experience, and a corporate mentality. It is sad.
I e mailed them a long time ago and
x
I got their info -- seems to take a long time (sm)
to receive the first pay.
The hospitals take a long time with IDs sometimes. I know that the sm
account I am lead on takes anywhere from 2 days to 3 weeks. It is a source of frustration for the management team as HR hires because of a need and then the hospital takes forever. Not all accounts though. Some are same day.
This was a long time ago, Since DD was put in place, there have
been no problems. It has been in place for over 2 years now. Why would you bring something up from years ago? You forgot to mention that they sent out the bank letter to everyone that it was not a bounce but that a deposit had not cleared yet and the fact that they covered everything immediately. Tell the whole story if you are going to open your mouth at all. No work? You're nuts. They have more work than anywhere I have ever worked. What's the real story?
I have not seen them advertise in a long time.
I have never heard anything negative about them to my recollection though.
I have not seen them advertise in a long time.
I know their recruiter left and I really have not seen any ads. They do have a banner on this site though.
Any long-time Amphion MTs out there? HELP!
Where's the work?!?  I'm hoping to get some straight answers from some other MTs (i.e., not management).  I'm a newbie (less than 2 months) who was hired to be full time and for the 4th week straight I'm lucky to get 4 or 5 hours a day!  They keep saying it will get better but I'm getting less work than ever!  Has anyone else experienced this?  How long were you all on mandatory overtime before the workload suddenly plummeted?  I decided to work here because everyone on the message boards said how great Amphion was and how there was always tons of work and the people were so wonderful.  Yeah, the people are great and nice and professional and everything, but sadly that is not going to pay my bills next month.  Maybe I should look for a 2nd part-time job to complement this one!!
