How is that unrealistic?

If you had any other job and didn't meet the expectations of your employer you would be terminated.  What makes this job any different?

But very unrealistic!
;*
How unrealistic to say they are not going to get
This is just not true and such a blanket pessimistic statement.  Of course they can do better. MDI was not the end all of end alls, and to have your attitude, well, of course they will have no options. Might as well just throw in the towel according to you, and give up. What a terrible way to look at life and how sad for you.Of course, you'll reply that you are just fine and dandy, which is BS. Why come on here then and spread your doom and gloom. Say something encouraging, why not?? As I said, I've worked for MDI before and they were OK.  They were very nice and very accommodating, but they had no work.  No work equals no work. This was not just one time, either, but over a period of several years.  They treated me like gold, but were always short of work.  Before you bash me, I am a top notch MT who types anything and everything, can handle any number of accounts, so it was not me.  I can still write to staff today and they are friendly and would give me a job, but truly MDI was not the best game in town and certainly not the only game. Now why not encourage the MDI MTs some more?? any more doom to toss at them?
I don't think it is unrealistic at all and I am a very
were, for the most part, top notch MTs.  But if you haven't noticed, MT has been on a downhill slide for a while now.  The writing is on the wall, and that writing just got so big a blind man could see it with the aquisition of MDI.  If I am wrong, I'll come back someday and say so.  But even with my own accounts and within 20 years of retirement, I am preparing for another my exit from MT.
That's so true. It's unrealistic to think otherwise.

The powers that be at JLG had unrealistic expectations.

May of 2008 is when they went live with their SR program.  They hired a bunch of the QA people that were fired from Focus in their shake up in early May.  They hired everyone in at hourly pay because the SR supervisor told mangement that there would be a learning curve for the SR engine.  In other words, the QA people hired at the beginning would be teaching the SR engine by making corrections to the reports typed by the SR software.  We were basically transcribing entire reports in an effort to teach the engine.

Within two weeks of starting the program, JLG management was crying about losing money because they were paying us hourly and we weren't producing where they thought we should be.  The supervisor again tried to explain to them that as the SR engine began to learn, our production would increase significantly because we would need to make fewer corrections.  This shut them up briefly.  Then they began to cry again and said all SR people need to be paid on production even though they had contracts with each and every one of us stating we were to be paid hourly.  So the decision was made to put everyone but the team leads on production.

Still JLG management wasn't satisfied because they weren't lining their pockets well enough or quick enough.  They kept pushing and the SR supervisor turned in her resignation.  They in turn told her she was terminated as of that day instead of letting her work her final two weeks.  They then cut her off completely and told her to not have contact with any of us.  Within a week of her departure, the team leads were then contacted and told they had to go on production as well.

Still not satisfied, management began to scrutinize each SR editor, putting some on 100% QA and bombarding them with email, making them feel as though every move they made was being watched.  It was a very stressful situation.  Management played games such as cutting off work so there was no work in the SR queue for anyone or putting in some phantom editor who was doing SR at a rate three times faster then the rest of the SR team.

Some of us were producing upwards of 3000 lines a day on SR and still were made to feel it was not enough and if we were producing enough, then our quality was called into question.

Now this.  Now they just pull the plug.  We put our blood, sweat, and tears into making SR work for JLG and they have had no intentions of letting work --> well at least one person specifically had no intentions of letting it work.

So there is the sad saga of the JLG SR fiasco.

Unrealistic view that a lot of MTs do not understand. The offshore companies sm
have very deep pockets and make it attractive for companies here to use them. Even if every smaller MTSO refused to do it, do you think we would be able to compete with Spheris and C-Bay just to name two of the bigger companies that use the offshore transcriptionists?

Hospitals, unfortuneately, often care more about the bottom line than the perfection we expect from ourselves. Many doctors do not read the reports (most from what I understand) and just care that they have satisfied JACHO requirements by having a record in the charts.

Offshore transcription is not going anywhere. Sad but true. I do not support it but I am a small tree in a very, very, very big forest.
Totally unrealistic as long as Indians make it worth their while.
nm
Whoa there.
Relax. Please don't midunderstand. The comment is not directed at you personally and not intended to impeach your sources. I was simply trying to express great surprise that your research on this site or any other would turn up such negative press on such a good platform. Did not mean to imply otherwise.

Don't think that the substance of my post lies in the that silly opening comment, but rather in the review of the platform. Of course it is not a company, but the platform is used by a company that is currently hiring at at time when some of its people are low on work. I don't think it is completely unrealistic to suggest that work starved transcriptionists might try to keep their own territory secure. My message is meant to encourage that person or anybody to feel free to pursue work with any company that uses it with confidence that they won't regret it.
Whoa! Huh? 700 lph at 12 cpl!?!?
x
Whoa!
I think she meant because you stated if you stayed in your seat meaning you are glued to it.
Whoa!
Sounds like they should be top of the list for the Hall of Shame!  Seriously, we need one these days!  Time is money, and it takes time to sift through all these crappy companies!

Yikes!
WHOA!!
That is downright stupid of you to say.  Must be a newbie.
Whoa......
No warning, no nothing? She just sat there and timed how long you were you gone with the potty/coffee break, and fired you, just like that???? OMG, that's absolutely crazy!!! For all she knew, you were desperately trying to work through the stomach flu and had been in the bathroom vomiting that entire time.

That's just fricking insanity.

Sorry you lost your job, JM0405, but I've no doubt there's a more appreciative gig out there for you, like one that doesn't time your potty breaks!!!
Whoa....
A bit on the nasty side, aren't we?

While I certainly don't advocate patronizing payday loan places as they're notorious for overcharging on interest and becoming a habitual practice for its patrons, I also don't condone telling someone that their problem boils down to 2 issues, black and white, and to 'stop whining and work.'

Honestly, do you have a crystal ball and know what the OPs situation is? Do you know that she doesn't have issues that include a terminally ill parent/spouse/relative for whom she cares and counts on a certain payday for a specific reason?

Yeah, I don't know if she does or not, either.

Maybe she's a diehard spendthrift.

Or maybe she has financial issues that the rest of us have not been cursed with.

You sound like a very bitter person, and I certainly hope if you have children you're far more compassionate with their issues than you displayed with this OP.

If you were trying to win some dubious award for nastiest post of the day, CONGRATULATIONS...You win.

How pathetic some of you are with your judgments and put-downs. I can only imagine how utterly miserable your lives must be.
Whoa...What???!!?? English please?

Whoa people!
Group hug!
Whoa...thanks for the warning! nm

WHOA NELLIE!
Back in the day. I wasn't even an MT Back in the day so I doubt seriously I am frozen there.

someone finally lets loose, do you not read this board very often? People on here let loose every day!

As for this hyena standing up for what she deserves (and I feel safe in thinking I speak for a few of the other estemeed hyenas) I would have stood up LONG before anyone owed me 5K!!!
WHOA! Let's back up here. First off, I don't post anywhere....
like I "do here" until somebody keeps trying to dig. I thought I was plenty clear in my initial post that I am flexible on my hours, working when the work is there and asking for different accounts as I said. That means that when the OT is there, I don't shy away from it and am willing to work when the work is there to be done. I do NOT take work away from other MTs. If the work is low, I work my regular hours, but in this business the work is so fluctutant, especially at this time of the year, that it's rather easy to get the lines "with flexibility."

If I came off as "with an attitude," it was only because I felt YOU were trying to find out if I was one of those who "steals" lines or in some way trying to find out more than I felt was yours to know. I Just thought, however, that my initial post was pretty concise.

As I stated earlier, flexibility of hours, plus a LOT of shortcuts and whole texts into the shortcut file helps. Familiarity with an account always leads to higher lines. There is always a learning curve for any job or any account and its dictators, so that is definitely a factor. "Ruth" who posted above summarized what I had said in my initial post and that I thought was clear.

It really boils down to the basics of being a productive MT, I suppose. Is this what you want to know?????????
WHOA!!!HUGE RED FLAG --- SM
They would have known WELL AHEAD of time if they were upgrading the direct deposit. Something is going on with the finances of the company. Now, have they made any comments about paying people for bounced checks and such that will occur because of this lack of notice? If not, get the hell out and don't look back! Also, print out the email that says they were upgrading in case you need it for court documentation
whoa - that just may be a troll post.....sm

as I know it, the MT work coming out of India is sent to 3 doctors in India who sit in a room and proofread ALL India-MT work........saw a program on cable TV.....and this work is proofed before it comes back to the US.....

Whoa. Back up here just a minute.
http://www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10120.html#proof

Read the website info carefully.

If you are okay with any stranger having proof of your identity, your address AND A PICTURE ID, go right ahead and fork those babies over...no questions asked. A word of caution. Those two documents are really everything that anybody will ever need to steal your identity. The picture ID is icing on the cake. Sound paranoid? Not if it has happened to you a time or two. It's been done to me 3 times in the past 15 years. It is a really creepy feeling and a HUGE hassle to undo.

The only legitimate documents for proof of citizenship are U.S. birth certificate, a U.S. passport, a Certificate of Naturalization or a Certificate of Citizenship.

These new rules they talk about have only been effective since sometime in 2006. DL and SS prove only you identity...unless of course you are younger than 1-1/2.

You probably cannot avoid giving your SS#....but I agree with the other poster....copies of the rest of it only if you are hired. If it were mean, I would not hesitate to ask them exactly why they need them.
Whoa, I meant Transcend
NM
Whoa! Where've you been? This board was
positively crackling with anger over all of Acusis' MT's getting a 10-15% wage cut. We all got a phone call last Friday. Maybe they just couldn't get to everybody in one day. And she conveniently didn't mention it this morning in the meeting. Since they do a pretty good job of keeping us from getting in touch with each other (unless you want to do it on their totally monitored company email), you should check in with this thread on MT Stars DAILY. It's the only way we all have of comparing notes.
WHOA, TRANSCEND DOES NOT ALWAYS PAY FOR SPACES
It depends what account you are on. I'm on one that DOES NOT pay for spaces. It depends on what they agreed to when the account was set up with each individual hospital.
Whoa, 18 days of PTO? Really? I'd sure like to hear the details on that. nm
nm
WHOA! Could this be a scam to steal personal ID???? nm
???
whoa what kinda mistakes are YOU making?
You work that many hours and I am sure there are a few screw ups here and there in your reports from tiredness. I mean even your posts are very hard to understand.
Whoa! That's one of the strangest policies I've seen
They make you list 3 places you tried to look up a term? That's just plain nuts. I wonder what their turnover rate is.

Thanks for the info.
Whoa, you TOTALLY misunderstood my post
Calm DOWN! I meant to ask your company only allows you to type 1200 lines a day? I would never do what you're accusing me of. Slow down and consider that before you blow your top like that. I was sympathizing with you, not trying to tear you down. Geeze!
Whoa..been years since they've been mentioned! Is their website current?
s
At first I was thinking that you were being unrealistic, not thinking about taxes, benefits, etc. bu
surprised to find that you are not asking the moon. Let me clarify a few things: Rates charged are not as high as 0.25 per line, but no one that has U.S. employees goes as low as 0.115 or they would not be able to pay their bills. A more realistic range is 0.125-0.165, and that top end is hard to find, most falling at 0.14-0.15 per line.

The rates of pay you propose are very reasonable IF the following is true: These are seasoned MTs who do not need a lot of hand-holding, QA or blanks filled in, unless a very difficult/impossible doctor.

How about a scale based on experience and accuracy of 0.09 - 0.105 per line (acute care), and $1.15-$1.30 per report (radiology)?

The VR one is tough as everyone, MTs and MTSOs and facilities are still feeling their way on this. As an MTSO who was an MT, I feel that VR editing is as difficult to do as regular transcription. I don't think that it should be substantially less pay or charged less as the end product is still the same.

Funny thing here? My company already follows that scale. We should work together, not at odds, to reinforce this industry and bring it back to where it should be, right here in the U.S.A. with a decent paycheck.
Be careful
Be careful
All I can say is be careful...
You will get a great offer, good training and be happy as a lark ... until you're out on your own, no one from IT will respond to your inquiries about technical problems, and they'll train you on one account (one that gives you great line counts) and then presto-chango, you're typing every ESL doc they dug out from wherever it is they hatch them from and you'll make ZERO dollars. I think the problem here is, like a lot of others, the good dicatators are going through VR (you'll notice, Transcend has a TON of openings for VR editors), and we (the MTs) are getting stuck with the dopes who cannot talk. I'm giving some serious thought to switching to editing - I'd rather do that and do twice the work, than try to figure out what these jokers are saying. Anyway, I was making great money during training with Transcend, but am now LOSING money and trying to decide if I should look elsewhere.
Be careful, though
My training went exceptionally well and I was on cloud 9. Then - WHAM!!! They put me on the account I was hired for (of course, no one told me it was different than the one I trained on), and it is AWFUL. I made great money right after training, until this new account ... now I'm taking a loss. These dictators are AWFUL - so I hope for your sake, when your training is over, they don't do the same to you.
Be careful. (sm)
I don't know if they do this anymore, but I was hired at a gross line count and then they changed things after hiring. I did the math, and I came out as losing money. Many others were complaining of the same bait and switch at the time.

I also ran into the absolute rudest QA staff of my long career at JLG. It sounded like the owner was going to try to straighten them out at the time, but I didn't stick around to see whether she did.

I had the highest line rate at JLG that I've ever had (13 cents, can't remember if with or without spaces); however, the constant running out of work and being asked to take the day off!, constant switching around of accounts combined with the rudest QA ever made it absolutely not worth it. I've come to the point I realize that it's the entire package an MT has to look at. Others have paid less, but I've been happier.

I hope this helps. I know you asked for those with a happy experience, but I thought I'd give you an honest experience.
Be careful
Whether you can do it or not depends on what they hire you for. Look at the postings a few days ago where people talk about the one account with all the ESLs that people scream about.
Be careful with them
Good pay, but many many problems. 2 yrs with them & I can't take it any more.
Careful about A. They will tell you
that you are hired for tier 3, but then say they meant 2 or 1 and give you a much lower rate!!
Be very careful.

You're not supposed to be sending intercompany information anywhere.  I would get it in writing first that your ISP isn't going to be tracked and your info handed over to Transcend so they can fire you.  With all the info on this board about what they are doing, Transcend still has their weekly cattle calls on the job seekers' board, so it doesn't look like Transcend is going to lose anything.

Just be very careful.

Be careful
There are huge tax implications. Yes, you get to deduct for certain home-office expenses, but only under specific guidelines and there is a minimum amount that you must have spent out of pocket. If the company is paying you very, very well, then I'd say go for it. Under no circumstances should you take an IC/statutory emp. (where they pay no taxes) job at the same rate of pay as an employee. Please take the time to consult with a tax person before getting yourself in what could be a very expensive proposition. You won't be sorry.
And be careful.
It can mess up your Word program so that some of your commands won't work any more (if you use Word for anything else).
And be careful.

It can mess up your Word program so that some of your commands won't work any more (if you use Word for anything else).

Be careful
Depending the account you get you may spend more time with the demographics than it is worth and the line counts can be off if you copy/paste into regular Word and check them yourself, or even using a line counting program.
Be careful
Check the archives, where it is posted that they do not pay on time or do not pay at all, as well as some taking or having taken legal action against them.
Be Careful
I worked for them and made no money. When a QA position opened, I tested for it. They claimed I didn't pass. However, 2 years later, I am the QA director for another company. Hmmm. I think someone had a friend or relative that wanted the job too.
Be careful
This company makes a lot of promises they don't keep, their Editor is extremely difficult to work with, and their employee turnaround is awful.  Watch yourself.  I worked for them for two years and am SO glad to be done.
Be very careful...sm
They will tell you they pay for spaces but when you get your check (six weeks later) you will see you are not because the IType system they use does not count them.  When you inquire you are lied to and told they are not sure what is up.  They keep you on the hook but know all along they are not paying for spaces.  Apparently, they have been doing this for several years.  Do a search on this board.  As well, still waiting for my last check and it's been several months.  Won't respond to calls or e-mails.  No work either most days.
wow, all I can say is be very very very careful ...
I can't emphasize it enough. Very bad reputation, but apparently the admins of this board were supposedly talking to him (owner) about not paying people and so forth and they have allowed him to post jobs again. But just be careful - there are quite a few companies out there that do not pay or will pay up to a certain point (i.e. when they are done using you) and you will never hear from them again.
