Serving Over 20,000 US Medical Transcriptionists

why does this matter so much to you? Are you personally involved or affected?

It seems like you are being vindictive.  This was all 15 years ago but you are dragging it up over and over.  Perhaps you are jealous of how she turned her life around. Have you never made a mistake?

There were more than just a few affected.
I have a friend who recently quit QA there because she was affected by this. There were more than a few who were affected. It's more like there were only a few who were NOT affected.
How do you think this will be affected with the new pay plan.
:
It's not just our industry that's affected...sm

Try calling your ISP, cell phone carrier, cable or satellite company, etc for company service and more than likely you'll receive someone who isn't in the US.

Want to buy furniture?  Good luck finding it American made.

What about your clothes you're wearing? More than likely not made in America.  After all, that's how places like Wal-Mart is able to provide the low prices we want.  When I was in high school back in the late 70s a pair of Levi's would cost you around $20.  They are still around $20 - and it's almost 30 years later - yet the cost of producing them has gone up so something has to give to keep them cheap.

What about your car?  It's hard to find the words American Made Car and Top Quality in the same sentence unless you have $40,000 or more to spend.  Most of us can't afford that so we go to cheaper vehicles - that are in part or wholey made out of the US.   Kia is building a plant here in Georgia that will open next year - and it cost our state millions to get this deal to provide jobs for Americans.  They've already more people asking about jobs with them then they'll have openings for - and they haven't even started hiring yet.

Now look at food.  Where does your produce come from?  Increasingly from Mexico because of pricing.

Now let's take our situation of healthcare and our jobs as transcriptionists.  Hospitals demand lower transcription pricing and get it because of competition.  Long gone are the MTSOs getting 20 cpl for a gross line.  MTSOs now do good if they get 9-10 cpl for a 65 character line - without headers/footers.  The hospitals don't care about the individual Transcriptionist because we don't provide direct patient care that they can bill for - even though if we don't transcribe correctly they can't bill - but they don't view it that way.  On the other hand if you're an oncologist or radiologist and want a new play purty you'll probably get it because it'll make them money.

America has always been a free society with free trade, and as long as that continues our jobs will continue to increasingly leave the borders.  Will government care? Not really because the lobbyists line pockets with cash and gifts to keep getting what they want.  Here in Georgia the head of an area in the state was recently publicized as being unusual because she refuses to accept even a cup of coffee from anyone wanting to do business with the state.  That's the way it should be - instead of the exception to the rule.

Do you mean 60 positions are being affected? sm
I sent you an email.
How offshoring affected me
I lost my job to Medquist (now in Indian hands) 6 months after Katrina and took a 40% pay cut not to mention paying way more for health insurance with huge deductibles and losing my retirement plan, but my wind insurance for my house has gone up 300%.  The math doesn't work.  When you outsource ANY AMERICAN JOB AMERICANS SUFFER!  Tell them that!
I haven't been affected that much in the job I have now

but from reading the boards, income has dropped like a rock. Some hospitals/services want SS#, names, addresses, DOB, etc. in their reports. Not a safe thing to do with all the identity thefts going on.

I started when wages were around 12 cpl, nowhere near that now. Outsoursing has taken our wages down because we are competing with companies that are paying only 1-3 cpl. We are to work for less just to keep the jobs in this country, and even then, it doesn't work because the other countries cut their cost/wages even more.  In India, they can live a good life on 3 cpl from what I've seen, but not here.

Obviously, if you had read the thread, YES, she is affected!
She explains fully and in great detail how this could potentially affect her area, MTSOs, MTs, etc. Who is being vindictive? You're trying to stir up something and make no sense! Maybe Linda?? And comparing what sounds like a huge scandal, complete with convictions and fraud, to "a mistake"?  Trivializing a bit, don't ya think?
Only a few were affected so one must question who really is at fault here.
???????????????????????????
only former CyMed folks affected
So far, they've told us it's only people who were with Cymed prior to the SPi buyout; no SPi folks affected...
Why send emails to everyone if your account is not affected? sm

I guess I do not understand what all of the hoopla is about.  If you are out of work, call the office and get a backup account.  I have a backup account, and have only had to go to it once.  I get the emails that are pertinent to the accounts to which I am assigned.  What good would it do for them to tell me that Hospital X is swamped with work, when that is not my account?

I agree with the poster above -- if people are so unhappy, why stay?  I personally am happy with TransTech.  While I wish the pay scale was a little higher, they have a nice tier incentive plan, the benefits are good and reasonably priced, plus the staff seem to truly care and try to be responsive to the needs of their employees.  Look at how they listened to people complaining about the line counting software, etc.

Just my opinion ...

Since you are a lead and one of their "pets," I doubt this affected you at all. sm
It seems a bit callous toward your fellow MTs, though, not to recognize the plight they are in with no work.  Everyone expects a slowdown around the holidays, but not 2 months' worth.  Love them if you want, and it seems they love you too, but for the rest of us not-so-loved ones, it has been a grim winter in the CS camp.
It's time to get involved in

politics and vote for the candidates who have a plan  fixing the health care mess. They won't bother if we just sit on our thumbs and wish for a miracle. The corporations are right up in their faces with their needs and wishes, we need to be also.

The hospital involved
used at service with work at home MTs, for one thing. It was a complex case, but several people at several levels did not follow rules and regs.
Too many companies involved & they sm
will make the choice not to deal with unionized workers.  There is no law forcing any company to become a union shop and I doubt seriously any of them would.  That is why a union cannot work for transcriptionists.
I was not involved in any posts at all, but ICs
I am not interested in ICing at the moment, but those who do IC work have the right to be upset at this who work as supposed ICs, yet let their employer -- note that I used this word intentionally - they let their employers dictate the hours to work, the lines to produce, and hold them to a set schedule. This is the polar opposite of what an IC is. When MTs do not realize this and happily accept these illegal working conditions, it ruins the IC marketplace for the rest of the ICs. One company gets away with it and the next one follows suit.  That's how we got in the mess we are in today. When an IC says yes to a set schedule set forth by their employer, and is told how many lines to type, etc, it is 100% an employee position - the MTSOs just get their cake and get to eat it too, by having MTs, women, at their beck and call as employees when they have no legal right to do so. Everyone loses - the ICs, the MTs and the other MTSOs who are following the laws.  The more ICs who are ignorant of the situation, the less true IC positions will be left. Our freedom to work as IC is literally just about the last perk most of us has left.  It should not be taken away by fellow MTs who have not a clue of the laws and how it should be. So, yes, its a very very important issue and one that we should all understand and support, whether employee right now or IC.  It impacts our entire industry.
Jay Vance is involved, so it must be good.
x
Dislike it, too. Much too involved, too many choices, etc. nm
v
Man, the testing for these services is involved. nm
nm
seems a little *helium* involved in this response..sm
geez, not to mention some pretty snitty answers.
Yes, I know. Our hands have been tied. I'm sorry for all involved. :( nm
.
I usually would not get involved in this type of conversation, BUT...lm
Your reference to the Mexicans doing work the US citizens do not want to do is WAY off the mark. If the wages were as they used to be before US employers found that the Mexicans would work for lesser wages and be happy, US citizens WOULD do the work. The same applies to the MT work - were it not sent off shore at a ridiculously acceptable and low wage, MTs in the US would be much happier. With such an attitude, I fully predict that the poor class in the US will rise to meet that of other third-world countries - and your attitude about oh well, that's just the way things are now is exactly one of the reasons this type of working condition is being allowed to happen here on our own soil! Working for a foreign employer is a choice that few US MTs with good work habits and skills is willing to make - and that, in my opinion, should speak volumes! Just because you are willing doesn't make it wrong for others who do not. Just my opinion!!
I wasn't involved in the thread and don't
know what you are talking about, but we do have freedom of speech.  You can vote to get a post deleted by clicking on the blue vote/moderate button.  It takes 10 votes to get post removed - not 10 votes from same person though.
How did Transtech get involved in this conversation?
nm
You needn't be so smug. I'm not involved at all, other than reading
It takes no guts at all to come on and cheer for your company - any company, and even use your name.  Kudos to you, and mgmt will be tickled.  It does, however, takes guts to come on here and post, even anonymously, about negatives with a company, any company. I would assume from the postings that the person you are trying to "call out" is a current employee. First of all, you all know that even Larry reads this board regularly, along with all his "eyes" as in MTs. They even discuss it via interoffice email.  Second, if said employee is complaining currently about certain issues that are causing his/her unhappiness, he/she will be easily identified by the postings. Its a no brainer.  Then Transcend will be all over his/her butt, threatening whatever they want to threaten.  I am an ex-employee with Transcend, and I even have to watch what I say regarding my 100% total negative experience, as I don't want them honing in on me, either. Finally, it is just so ignorant to make blanket statements about any complainers who are "vague" as being job-hopping malcontents. I can assure you that one thing that bothered me BIG time about Transcend was how they treated me differently, as in preferential, as a new hire compared to what was supposedly required on hire, i.e. working set shifts, etc. After I was hired and not happy with a set schedule, I was allowed to do what I wanted when I wanted to.  That info alone will identify who I amt to my account supes.  I was shocked at getting that preferential treatment myself, and that had the opposite impact on me - it made me wonder who WAS getting what and why! And you act as if thousands and thousands of happy Transcend employees are reflective of the health of the company. It is a tiny company in the big picture. When I hired on, I had the impression Transcend was HUGE - right up there with MQ and Spheris, but there are only a 300 employees? If that? Larger than a small MTSO, but nowhere near the volume of the big guns.  I also had an account that had mandatory overtime - mandatory, while others had no work, etc. Just wasn't my "fit", but that doesn't mean I'm a job hopping loser MT. Quite the contrare'!  So, lighten up on the poster who has graciously told you over and over that he/she doesn't want to post details, and get off your high horses!  One can get bucked off easily when riding too high! Or hit in the neck with a branch!
Past posts said they involved the owner. nm
s
Tapes? So there is shipping involved too? Yikes nm
dd
MTSOs are the bosses; MTs are the employees. There is no friendship involved. nm
nm
I think I would not stage an accident where a rope around my genitals was involved. sm
Obviously, I wouldn't be around for the embarrassment, but you'd think he'd think about his family.  I am sorry he is dead ... and really sorry that it happened under such freaky circumstances.
No, we did not give out information. No court order involved. sm
Obviously, TT was able to look at the information provided in the posts and determine who they FELT were making the posts.

No information has been given out by MTStars on this situation whatsoever.

Move on.

They are cruising for a bruising! I got a check from another co when the labor board got involved
NM
I completely concur. Find a good one, or move on, quickly. No loyalty involved. The don't sm
have any to the MTS.  NONE of them.
Becoming certified, anyone know if there is more money involved in being a certified MT versus non
certified.
Personally...
I think it's thoughtful in a way. Maybe your supervisor is just trying, in her own way, to make her MTs feel less isolated. Might not be the way you'd choose, but I'd take this sort of supervisor over one that ignores me any day!
Personally, I liked it better when it was
a small company.  I'm not excited about all the tiers of management that have been added, makes you feel more like you are just a number rather than someone who is making a difference.   Some of the team leaders are good, some are not so good, some are there to collect a pay check.  Pay is every other Friday, without fail.  As far as the programs to work  on, there are several, just depends on what you like.
They KNOW THE LAW. I know personally I sent it to
them enough as well as others. They just do not want to abide by it.
Personally
I don't think some of these schools really care if their students gets a job or not; they are just in it for the money. I had a situation where my stepdaughter had a friend who took a course and wanted me to tell her where she could work. I had no answer. The school SHOULD have had some ideas, but a lot just don't care.
personally, i don't think they
overhire. I think it is a combination of short turnaround times, and work flow variations mainly, with maybe a few other factors thrown in for good measure...

also i believe that they (and rightfully so) hire a few more than needed as all of the new hires never stay. The ones that do are transitioned in slowly and then generally i believe (as with myself) get plenty of work. and they will work with account changes until you are happy. but obviously that doesn't work for everyone. i'm sorry it was a bad experience for you, but it has/still is an excellent one for me! wishing you well...
Don't take it personally

The QA people don't know you other than how they see your work. They can't possibly like you or dislike you.   I have found that most people who are very busy (I have been one of them) when they are sending e mails or messages along those lines, just don't have the time to pretty it up.  When you don't hear tonal inflections from someone speaking it's very hard to interpret how a statement is truly intended.  It's also very easy to take something in a way that it was not intended at all.

Ignore the perceived tone and focus on the content.  Keep every e mail as backup.  Make the corrections that they want you to make.  Now if they are being contradictory with themselves, that's one thing, but if they're just being picky . . . . . that's their job.

Just keep at it, don't take personally
Have you ever noticed how many hits (viewed) listed on each job posting? So say 500 or more and allll emailed a resume and only 1 position AND, say they stopped reading resumes after one or two and hired. See? Just keep emailing your resume, even go to the old listing and email. It is not costing anything, not a stamp etc. Just check both main job posting areas MTjobs and MTstars. Look to see if you can add or subtract something on your resume. Make the Font heading a bit larger.
Personally, I would not take it
I make way more than that now, but it the other things it offers meet your needs, go for it. Insurance isn't cheap to buy on your own, and that would be an attractive part of the deal. I personally couldn't handle the $13.50 an hour, but that's just me. Maybe the advantages outweigh the low salary? Do what is best for YOU.
personally, not really,
I am honored to have a job that others think sounds great. well, I guess I do get irritated if they think it sounds too easy, but whenever I've let someone listen to a few sentences of dictation, they get a whole new perspective!!
Why take it so personally? No one

wants to listen to YOUR ignorance, either. Maybe you should also stay in the seat that's best suited to you, and you know which one that is.

You are you to constantly insult MTs here? This board is for MTs, which you are not, otherwise you wouldn't lose your drawers everytime someone posts something you don't agree with, HMMMMMM???

I don't personally know anyone s/m

who works on escription, they all seem to work on different platforms and some of the things they tell me they correct just blows my mind.  Most of them seem to have to put in headings or take them out and correct the numbering patterns in addition to making all kinds of really STUPID corrections.  Here is a good example one of my friends sent me this morning:

VR:  He will be given deep gentleman hospitalization.

Dictated:  He will be given Epogen during the hospitalization.

So from what you say, I would say that it won't be long until MTs are really obsolete.

I personally am getting started with them
soon and cannot be more excited. I look forward to working with them!
I personally would rather be warned of
a company's questionable business practices and stay away from them altogether than find out after I had been hired by them and got screwed out of my pay.
Personally I don't think there are any psychics on here but I do see where someone would have
gotten the impression it was that service owner just based on the statement by the MTSO about the MT who bashed the company because they were fired. The MT had a good reason to be fired yet they blamed the MTSO. That is the only reason I thought it was that MTSO as well as I had seen something someplace else but this MTSO does usually use their name. Nothing psychic about it.
Personally, that's one of the things I liked

like I was really part of the health care team then, hearing doctors paged, hearing code blues called and hearing the pounding of the feet of the code blue team as they ran to the patient's room (of course the code blues aren't always on the floor directly above you, but when it is..).

Also, I've had a doctor pull up a chair and sit beside me as I transcribed his report where he mixed up left and right and he went through it with me and corrected himself.

I dunno, I kinda like the in-hospital atmosphere.  I work at home now, but I do miss it being in the midst of it all. I never had that same feeling working for a service, because you are removed from it all.

I personally would take the $15 simply because
production-based work stinks regardless of how easy and how many normals there are. Production is never going to be a salary you can count on. Go for the $15. I sure would.
Personally, and this is only my opinion, I would never ever
go with either one of them. I used to work for Diskriter, and while there are some people that had problems with them, there are others who did not. I personally had quite a bit of problems - ran out of work all the time, late checks, etc. etc.

I have heard great things about Alltype - I do not work for them. I currently work with three people who all work for them part time and have loved it.

I, myself, decided to go back to working for a hospital. The benefits were far better than what Diskriter was offering.
Personally, I would not reveal sm
the fact that I had a medical condition. Isn't it discrimination and illegal for a company not to hire you based on the fact you have a chronic illness? I have a chronic illness, for years, and have never been turned for employment based on that. I don't reveal it in interviews. It doesn't keep me from working and I seldom (maybe once every 2 years) take time off related to it.
I have personally experienced this.
You say that you have a job with meaning and subsance. What is so special about the job with Sten Tel. Did your other MT jobs not provide meaning and substance?
