And who shows up for Jury Duty

Posted By: ?? on 2009-02-11
In Reply to:

I went to Jury Duty months ago.  A judge came in the Jury Duty chambers and told us about the lack of a true system in Russia.  He personally visited Russia and interviewed their judges and prisoners.  Thus, be grateful you live the US. Be grateful you can speak your uncompassionate words.

Anyway in Michigan Jurors show up 47% of the time.  Kinda frightening given the judge's comment who is present for court every single day:

Long story short:  A rapist was let go because potential jurors don't show up.  The case was dismissed.  That's really quite sad.

Please no matter no state you are in...........go to Jury Duty.

Jury Duty
I've been called just once and because I used to work for attorneys, I was good friends with the Judge and I couldn't serve. I'd love to, though.
Jury duty in Idaho (sm)
In Idaho they go by driver's license and voter registration so if they don't get you one way they'll get you another I guess. They would miss a lot of people if they only went by voter registration. I have included a link to a page that explains it if you want to check it out. Maybe some states or counties are different, but I bet they probably all do things pretty much the same. Of course maybe this is good for you, it means you were both right, sometimes that's a good way to end a debate amicably.

How many times you been called for jury duty? sm
We have lived here for 10 years.  My husband has been called 4 times!  They have never called me.  He never gets selected when they find out he is prior military, but we know within a year or two he will get called again. He does not mind and has actually told me he would like to be selected and hear a case sometime.  It just makes me wonder, though, how often does everyone else get called?
Yeah, I just did jury duty, served on 2 trials in my small county court. There was a girl
did absolutely nothing. Good-looking, well-dressed young lady, may went out a few times (I'm sure to deliver a message or something), but other than that- absolutely nothing. What a job!. Am sure in my county at least, its all in who you know.

Good luck with your jury duty.
Jury is out
This is from the article I posted below under "Chuck is right."

"The factors that affect UV radiation exposure and research to date on the amount of sun exposure needed to maintain adequate vitamin D levels make it difficult to provide general guidelines. It has been suggested by some vitamin D researchers, for example, that approximately 5-30 minutes of sun exposure between 10 AM and 3 PM at least twice a week to the face, arms, legs, or back without sunscreen usually lead to sufficient vitamin D synthesis and that the moderate use of commercial tanning beds that emit 2-6% UVB radiation is also effective [11,28]. Individuals with limited sun exposure need to include good sources of vitamin D in their diet or take a supplement.

Despite the importance of the sun to vitamin D synthesis, it is prudent to limit exposure of skin to sunlight [31]. UV radiation is a carcinogen responsible for most of the estimated 1.5 million skin cancers and the 8,000 deaths due to metastatic melanoma that occur annually in the United States [31]. Lifetime cumulative UV damage to skin is also largely responsible for some age-associated dryness and other cosmetic changes. It is not known whether a desirable level of regular sun exposure exists that imposes no (or minimal) risk of skin cancer over time. The American Academy of Dermatology advises that photoprotective measures be taken, including the use of sunscreen, whenever one is exposed to the sun [83]."
Oh, and slave duty.
They get to do chores if they can't behave. Having a car, having electronics, going out with friends, those are all optional. What's that joke about CPS and snotty teens? The one stating all we have to provide is a roof, a bed, clothing (even used), and three meals a day?
I need some heavy duty face cream...
…I have some areas on my face that are extremely dry, around my hair line, around my nose and I have used several creams trying to soften these areas up. Sometimes I even flake on my eyelids like I have sunburn and I use dandruff shampoo on my eyebrows because if not they will flake- no dandruff in the hair, though. I know this sounds awful but this is getting on my last nerve. I have put petroleum jelly on my face overnight- still dry in these patches. Does anyone else have something like this and if so any remedies? Thanks
It's a mother's duty to protect her children
if at all possible and until she knows more about this woman she has no obligation to let her speak to her children - you have obviously never been in this situation.  I understand what you are saying about way worse and horrible situations in the world but that is not this OP's problem - her problem here is the emotional wellbeing of her children and it is her call and IMO she made the correct one.
I once was assigned guest book duty.
Like you, I didn't know what that entailed. When I arrived at the reception, I was told to hold the thing as people walked up and signed it. Basically, I was a human podium. If that's what the bride wants you to do, tell her to leave it on the table! How rude of her to expect so much! Show up in the red dress and don't even sign the silly guest book!
First of all, I am sure that painting the walls is the landlord's duty.
Same with the carpet, the landlord has either to clean it or put a new one. It was also his duty to fix the stove and pay for it.
Regarding all the mess in his basement and all the leaks, which emerged after you signed the lease, the landlord is in the wrong, as he did not disclose it to you before you signed the lease.
You are definitely confronted with an dishonest landlord and as a former poster said, get a housing inspection which will prove that the home is 'uninhabitable.'
All this 'junk' in the basement is a perfect breeding and hiding place for roaches, rodents and other pests.
You can definitely get out of this lease and have the right to ask your deposit back.

Thanks for being judge and jury on my situation, since you know it so well...

a few facts for you:  She hardly led a horrible life, she was adopted by a fairly wealthy family and had a great life (this is straight from her, I'm not speculating), she has siblings that she loves very much.

For someone such as yourself to judge me as heartless is going a bit too far. She was the one who found me, contacted me one day out of the blue after finding EVERYTHING about me on the internet, even knew when and where I went on vacation to see my family, knew when my father passed away, etc. It was my decision to give her up for adoption and it should be my decision on when and where we meet. She wants info on her birth father, which I have a bit of, but it isn't my place to disrupt his life by giving her this info. I have no problem in having a relationship with her, but things like this need to start slowly, not just jump into the fire and hope not to get burned.

You can speculate and create a back story to your own liking, but until you have been in the situation, you wouldn't know a thing about it.

Same here. I served on Federal Jury once, so

when I get summons for local court, I put that down. Plus, since we had a car stolen, all my jewelry and clothing (we were moving at the time), and a son assaulted, I usually get turned down for county jury duty.

I did like serving that one time and would do it again, but if I didn't put down the above things and they found out, it would probably be a mistrial if they put me on an assault or theft jury.

I've been called twice and served on jury twice sm
in about 12 years. I would never try to arbitrarily get out of it. I think it is only right that we do our duty as citizens, but I noticed how many people got out of sitting. I found it interesting and it gave me a feeling of "connection" with our American heritage!
geez. glad you guys are not MY judge and jury...sm
I will leave that to God to decide as to who is right and who is wrong. after 12 years, I would suggest moving on. It is over and done with. IF he did it, he will pay his dues. IF he did not do it, as he says, he will be redeemed. Case closed.
I had to go to jury selection today. I thought it was incredibly interesting.
I wonder how one goes about getting a job at the courthouse?  It all looked to intriguing.
shows
You've chosen great shows....Etta James?!!?.....I would give my right arm to see her live!....Bring tissues to Phantom if you've never seen it before.  You're gonna have a lotta fun.
It shows an ape for everyone
NM
shows?
any particular great shows or things to see ? ? My daugther is getting married at Mandalay Bay - not sure about the spelling of that.. we'd like to stay there or somewhere close but don't want to stay at a real expensive place. . watching the budget - planning our own marriage/house, etc.
Well, if it shows up in my
chicken and broccoli, then I am going to ask for an accounting somewhere. I checked the site, see nothing there that we use.
This shows you just how much you do not know
I was married, previous husband (deceased) bought a vehicle. At the time he bought this vehicle we were separated. He died before the car was paid off (back together at the time of his death). I was not signed on the papers in any way, shape or form and did NOT have to pay for the vehicle. I told GMAC they could come and get it out of my yard, I did not want, did not drive, etc., etc. Your statement about being responsible for each others bills made during the marriage does not hold water. You do not have all the answers like you think you do.
TV Shows
I don't have much time to watch TV, but I do DVR a lot. The main shows I watch are Ghost Whisperer, Nip/Tuck (when it's on), Flashpoint, Americas Next Top Model, Hells Kitchen, Desperate Housewives, and of course American Idol. I also have to admit that I love reality shows and watch a lot of the reality shows on the E channel, VH1 and MTV shows.
Yes, shows are something we could do, living
where we do. It's not far to go, maybe 12 miles across town.

And thank you very much. One thing we don't want to do is get Sasha's nose out of joint, LOL.
What about going on one of the judge shows?
I heard they pay the plantiff on the spot :)
shows who rates around here
So, the almighty humans get the seatbelts and all we get is a stinkin' leash?
I like the judge shows too, --sm
'specially Judge Judy. I like it when she starts telling people they are i*d*i*o*t*s, and the like. I really don't know why some of those people would even WANT to go on there and be subjected to her wrath! Talk about an anger personality! wheee.
Broadway shows

Hubby and I and 2 kids are going to New York and are going to see a couple of B'way shows.  Daughter and I are going to a matinee of Legally Blond and the whole family will see the evening performance of Lion King.  What is the appropriate attire.  Does hubby need to wear a tie and jacket.  I am clueless! Thanks for any info!

I've only seen a few shows (sm)
I've caught it a few times channel surfing, but I was mesmerized by that kid. He definitely has something. Unfortunately I work too much to get 'hooked' on anything LOL.

But yeah, his kids seem really well adjusted and grounded. My 20yo daughter just can't get over the fact that they have 2 kids and been living together forever and not married.
Nah, just a big fan of the nature shows.
I forgot manatees. I shoulda said mermaids. :o>

I also got married there- as far as shows
I loved Jubilee at Harrah's(this is topless at later show) and have seen Barry Manilow, George Wallace lately along with George Carlin- the Cirque shows play at 4 places, the Venetian, Bellagio, Treasure Island and the Mirage, I believe. A lot of the shows close around Christmas and they also have blackout nights during the week. I would check on line to see who is playing the week you will be there. Jubilee is there all the time whereas other entertainers in and out. I thought the Bay was sorta expensive place to stay?
Have you ever seen it? All of those shows are just disgusting.
It's very vile. Which is why I only watch t.v. 0.00001% of my time. There isn't anything good on t.v. anymore - or good for you. I have 3 young children and the only safe channel it seems is the food network!

She should do more exposure shows because--
not only does she reach millions, people pay attention.

this one's going to be hard for me to watch.
LOL...we watch those shows
at our house. I am usually the one who wants to see them (female).
No, not in that area. But just shows that this goes on everywhere. nm

fave shows
I'm addicted to HGTV and all the home improvement shows and house selling/buying shows..

My 9am EST *must* is Ellen, even if I only watch it for a few minutes for the monologue.

My 11:30pm **mustmust** is Chelsey Lately!! She is TFF!!!

I luvvvv House

I luvvvv that show the chick from Will & Grace is/was doing... oh shoot, what's the name of it.... grrrr... she's an ex-wife with a diary..

What TV shows do you watch?

With all the renewals and cancellations going on for the networks, what are the shows you regularly watch?

For me:
Lost
The Office
Kath & Kim
Big Bang Theory
Law & Order (& SVU)
House
The Simpsons

We got rid of cable so we rely on Hulu for anything else.

I saw a lady on one of those makeover shows and

she had her hair cut into a really great style that made her two tone hair look really trendy.  They did put a third color in her hair.  She had longer hair than you but perhaps you can have the same thing done to yours only shorter.  They layered her hair.

Baby? That pic shows a kid playing with a See & Say!

If that kid is old enough to pull on the handle, then that kid is also old enough to drink from a sippy cup! Come on, people! Wake up! This lady could have easily bottled her breast milk instead of whipping it out (discreetly or not) on a plane full of people.  Nothing like trapping a bunch of people on a plane and putting them in a very uncomfortable situation!

I breastfed my daughter until she started walking.  After that, she went on a bottle, then to a sippy cup, then to a regular cup.  She's 18 years old now and quite well adjusted.

And, we are not living in a third world country where kids up to 5 yrs old run up to their mother and just start suckin on a tit! This is America, where it's more cultured, where there are other options.

I remember a time when I was a kid at Disneyland and I saw a lady with her baby sitting on a bench.  I wanted to see the baby and walked past just in time to see the woman whip out her tit for all to see.  My mother was so enraged that she reported her and stood right next to the woman until security arrived and they told the lady that there were baby stations all around Disneyland where she could go to have privacy with her baby during feeding time.  BTW, there are still baby stations with seating for mothers to breastfeed their babies.

Hmmm...shows up for me right under the MQ board. nm

Have been approached by 3 of the judge shows before but
you and the other have to consent to both appear. Judge Judy, Joe Brown and Judge Mathis have all contacted me. It is a win-win situation for the people because the shows pay if you win so the defendant (as in my case) if losing would win because if found in my judgement, the judge show would pay. This was a previous case, not this particular 1. Each show has runners that go to the court houses and pull the different cases, that is how they get their clients.
Me, too. Have never watched any of those kinds of shows. nm
s
Missed these shows yesterday...sm

Anything good happen?  Did Nick reappear?  Please update me...

19yo that only shows up when she needs money.sm
She expects everything handed to her. I actually really do not know why as we never did anything close to that. She moved out to live with her grandparents at 17 (after GED). They give and give. I keep telling them that it is not a way for her to learn, and I think they are finally getting the picture. (They cut off her gas card.) She only comes to myself and dad when she needs money. I love her and always will, but this is the way she is. I have 2 other children (younger) and they have already learned money is not handed to them. They do their chores, etc. and they get to participate in sports or whatever they want. They have their own cell phones (at a reduced cost of course as it is help for them to have it). I just will never understand my oldest kiddo's attitude.
yep - apparently - and he's on many talk shows..sm

This dude spews on certain talk shows and certainly on his blog and I just don't like him and then he never shuts up either........*lol*

Is anyone else watching the new singing shows?
There are two of them, the Singing Bee and Don't Forget the Lyrics. What fun shows! I am loving them.
Er, house flipping shows. (nm)
.
Testing to see if this shows. Wonder why no posts on
s
You have a remote control for shows you don’t like,
that is why they are made, to change channels.
At awards shows, she's ALWAYS paired up with somebody better, too...sm
Duet with Tina...duet with Prince....trio with JHud and the other Dreamgirl...
That is the only way my husband shows affection. .sm
It breaks my heart sometimes. He especially likes to sneak up on my while I am doing dishes and the kids are watching tv. I hate it because I know that means he wants sex and will hound me until he gets it. He wants it once during the week and once on weekends. Once the kids are asleep, he will pester me until I give in or we get into an argument because I don't feel like it. He use to tell me he loved me every day and give me a kiss at night and in the morning. Now, it's nothing but the groping and sex. I think he considers it foreplay! He is otherwise a good husband. I am hoping as he gets older (he is 32 and I am 40), that it will get better. Right now it seems to be getting worse!
Nature shows on PBS make me cry.
.
This shows what one person, acting
upon their thoughts, can do. Look how many lives were touched and the day made special. thanks for sharing.
