She could be just overwhelmed. If she can't talk on the phone when her husband is home, he sounds like a very controlling person, so perhaps he is adding to her stress. Her mom may be old fashioned in that some older people do not discuss illness of any kind with those not in the family. She also may blame herself, as some of us do as a mom. Each time one of my kids has a new diagnosis, I always wonder secretly if I did something wrong while I was pregnant. Sounds like a combination of things and she wants to be left alone. If you overdo for her, she may get defensive, so just give her time but don't be beating yourself up. In time she will hopefully come around. Until then, buy something cute for the baby and wait to be invited. When you do go, mention someting positive about his beautiful eyes or his bright smile. Relax, it's not you at all.
