I will be happy to help you. I just returned from sm
the memorial for my grandmother and uncle who died on the same day back in March. Ya'll may remember me. There was no funeral. My grandmother did not want a funeral but to be cremated, and my uncle was cremated, too, as he died unexpectedly that same night.

Anyways, my aunt set up this gorgeous memorial for the entire family to attend last Sunday. It is approximately 1,400 miles from where we live. She told me the week after they died that she was going to have 2 maple trees profesionally planted on the property - one for my grandmother and one for my uncle. When we all arrived there last week my aunt had spent the past 2 months building a "memorial garden" for the deceased relatives. She had a beautiful bench, the 2 trees planted (my grandmother's cost 350 and my uncle's was 250). They are about 20 yards apart. After the memorial and service, my aunt took some of the ashes and spread them around the base of the trees (my grandmother's ashes on her tree and my uncle's on his). It brought such closure for everyone who attended. It was beautiful and now we will always have a place to go and reflect and "visit" whenever we need to. I plan on going back next year and "visiting" my grandmother and uncle, and look forward to seeing how big their trees have grown. She also planted a few pines - she had about 10 new trees in total. It really was a spectacular little place. She also had 1 tombstone for my grandmother.

Anyways, it is not morbid. I would do a tree because a rose bush will not last that long. And who cares if anyone thinks this is crazy.

In September, some of the family will be traveling to Hawaii to spread the ashes of both my uncle and grandmother in the Pacific ocean since we are all originally from Oahu, Hawaii. My uncle was a deep sea fisherman. I would LOVE to make that trip, but I have a husband and small children and can't afford it right now!

Anyways, you must do what you feel led to do. If it is to plant a tree in her honor, do that. With must deal with death in the way that we need to. Memorials are for the living, not the dead anyway, if you ask me. Good luck. You are NOT alone in making a decision like this.
I love this. Did it change your life when you returned?

way out west
We can't get salt cured ham, so I order it from Smithfield. If you are in the south, you are lucky. For spiral cut, I just grab one at Sam's Club. They are good and not to expensive.
Denver isn't west.....

I will be moving there soon and, sad for me, it is so flat I could hardly believe it.  It reminded me VERY much of Nebraska.  And the mountains are sooooooo far off in the distance.  I would have to say that I would consider Denver mid-west, not geographically of course but sure looked that way to me when I was there.  I like living right next to mountains and foothills in SoCal and Tahoe.

But it should be a VERY NICE place to VISIT!!!

Have a safe trip

?? Wyoming not out west?
I have been to Tahoe, driven to Yosemite and on the trip this summer going through the Rockies so do not think where I will visit will be all flat but then again my idea of a wonderful trip is scenery and animals and should get a dream trip again this summer. I said my departure from Denver, going through several states before leaving out. I hook up with an escorted tour and just have the time of my life. Went on same to Alaska last year. What a blast!
Only 10 here in west Michigan.
Windchill is -15 though. And snowing to beat the band to boot.

$3.41-3.45 here in West Texas. I have been
checking out yard sales for a bicycle.  Not just about gas, I need to loose about 50 pounds plus all these short trips to the store is hard on the vehicle anyway.
denver is most certainly west and is not flat...

I lived in and around Denver for 3+ years - it is not flat at all and it is most definitely WEST..........just not as west as the west coast.  Chicago is considered midwest (Illinois).

some people are just geographically challenged....*LOL*

My daughter is at VT and lives in West AJ.
With her guardian angel watching over her, my daughter is fine. After the first shooting, she was released to go to class and was walking toward Norris Hall. The police told her to go back to her dorm. She is in lock down and hungry. What a sad day for the VT community. Please pray for the families who lost their students.
West coast is all expensive...
So you settled back at home, 13K! WOW I would never settle back in Cali... like you said it's way too expensive and the wages (at least what i make) definitely don't keep up with the cost of living. I have found in the South the living is sooooo much more affordable, but then I have to think of the pros and cons like the weather (never been in a hurricane, they kinda scare me)... but the people are absolutely wonderful! at least everyone I have encountered was so nice and polite, again nothing like the west coast. I just visited Atlanta when I was in NC two weeks ago and fell in LOVE with it. However, it's a bit big for me but I am curious to know more about it... just as an option. Do you mind if I email you directly? Thanks again for your insight!

Are we living in the Wild West?....sm
I wonder that the police do not take more action against him.
Your mother has now to live imprisoned with a shotgun next to her bed?
She should make him institutionalized, declared incompetent and the property should become hers and yours.
I live in West Texas

Where I used to work up in West Chester, PA - sm
in one of the neighborhoods behind this shopping center I worked at, was this huge victorian house on a corner. They had it painted similar to this but it was about 4 or 5 different colors, tons of trim on this house. I thought it looked pretty wild. Don't know what the neighbors thought but it did make it really stand out. I used to go for a daily walk on my lunch hour and would walk by it almost every day. I applaud the owners for doing something original and not following the pack. I live in a cedar house now, we stained it (not supposed to stain as the wood was this special type that did not need staining, but it was all moldy and gross) and the former owners had a cow over it when they found out. The house still looks great, no mold on it since we washed (I literally scrubbed the house down wtih a hand brush) and stained it, no discoloration like before, and the stain has lasted longer than the 5 years it was supposed to too. To each their own!
A very small town in West Texas

I live in an 890 sq foot rock house.  I am guessing at the sq foot actually.  It is close to 900 but not quite there.  It ihas 2 bedrooms, 1 bath.  Metal roof.  I live close to the schools.  I live 2 blocks from the local hospital.  I just applied for a job there in fact.  I worked 8 years for a big 300-bed multispeciality hospital that was 35 miles away.  I left because of the climbing gas prices and I thought I needed a break from the office politics.  I started working for an on-line transcription company and for some reason just cannot seem to produce the lines or make half the money I was making at the hospital.  I have been here 6 months already.   I applied to another company to try my luck there and they offered me a job but I read in the paper yetserday  this little hospital here is hiring.  They do light transcription, filing, I forget what else it said.   The best part is I will have benes.  As I was applying a nurse recognized me and was telling me about them and they have improved since I worked there 10 years ago.  I hope the pay has as well and I hope they still like me.  LOL.

I'm with you. I live in west Michigan. I am more than ready. nm

Beach
Just keep a sharp eye on the children in the ocean with the boogie boards. The ocean current is strong. I found this out when we went to Myrtle Beach and my 10-year-old was on an inflatable raft. The current carried her rather far. It was a good thing my husband could swim. It happened so quickly but everything turned out all right.
beach - sm

Take the kids to Assateague Island, only a short way from Ocean City.  There is a beach for day use and they might see the wild ponies keeping cool by the ocean.  Just spent last week there.

On the beach...
in the cold wind. lol Poor planning for the time of year but I have beautiful pictures at sunset. :)

South Beach here.
I started South Beach just today since the New Year fell in the middle of the week.  My husband and I have done it before and it really works pretty much effortlessly.  I am working two jobs from 8:00 - 1:30 (Real Estate) and my transcription job from 2:00 - 10:30, so this seems to be the only way to lose weight for me given the fact that I have no free time or energy to exercise.  We did it before last spring and the weight loss is quick and pretty painless once you get over the initial carb withdrawal.  I would love some support and could offer some as well.  You can e-mail me directly at mandie573@yahoo.com.  Thanks and good luck.
Definitely Navarre Beach, FL
The most gorgeous, and well-kept secret in FL.  It is in the pan handle, about 35 miles W of Destin, and about 25 miles E of Pensacola Beach.  All of these beaches are beautiful, white sands.  Navarre is less traveled, and less busy.  My husband and I went with my sis and fam last year, which is where he proposed to me, then this year on 07/07/07 we were married beachside.  It is wonderful.  I just keyed in Navarre Beach search, and many offers for condos came up.  We stayed at the Inn at Summer Wind, a wonderful high-rise condo equipped with everything,  If laying around on the beach and/or having coffee on your balcony overlooking the water is your cup o tea, this is the place for you!  It is very relaxing.  Then, you can cross the bridge back to mainland (Navarre is a small island), and go to the new Superwalmart, to specialty shops, or on down the road either way to frequent other beaches/restaurants, and there is an outlet mall down near Destin that was cool.  Just an awesome place to to.  We went in June in 06 and July 07, and the water and weather were perfect.  In fact, 07/07/07 was the most pretty day down there this year!!!  Good luck deciding, but in my exp. It was well worth it.  July is the on-season, and we paid around $1300 for 6 nights in the condo, that slept 6 (king BR, bunk beds made in the wall (hubbies bed if he don't behave) and couch is a pullout.  I think starting in mid Aug. or so it is about 1/2 that.  I have to go in the summer, though, because of the kids and teacher hubby.  Good luck again!!
Does anyone know about Myrtle Beach, SC? SM

I don't mean for a vacation; I mean as far as living there. Any information will be most appreciated.

Thank you.

Pebble Beach
Is in Monterey, California.
Myrtle Beach
I would love to live there. . Good luck to you. . I think you are very brave. .
it's about 2 miles from the beach

here on the West Coast of Michigan in Muskegon.  Bought the house from a man who was a nut and who had bought it in foreclosure for 17K.  Huge yard, 100 x 100 feet, all fenced.  Two bedrooms, one bath, just over 800 square feet (pretty small).  All new siding, all new triple-pane windows, new furnace, new fridge, new hot water heater, new stove (found the receipt, $1700 for the set), and a totally re-done kitchen.  It's in the inner city, I call it my "little house in the hood."  Taxes are about $900 a year.  The only repairs we needed to make were to the plumbing, of which there was none, and I mean none.  So, my nephew and I spent just over $200 and learned how to plumb -- all connected and flowing, PVC is my new best friend.

There's tons of houses even cheaper than this here, just not the best neighborhoods, but you can houses anywhere from 2 to 5 to 20 grand as fixer-uppers.  I take my child to school of choice out of district, cuz I wanted him to go to school where I went; it's only a 5-mile drive.  Gotta love it, good enough for now.

Myrtle Beach
I have been to Myrtle Beach many times and I think it would be an awesome place to live. . Allyson is beautiful - she is lucky to have an aunt who is willing to consider making such a big change to be closer to her.
Thanks, Cranky Beach
Thanks very much for the information.  I'm in Alabama.  A co-worker has told me yes, you can apply for unemployment even if fired, but there's a penalty; this I don't really understand -- is it one-time or every month?  Not sure.  Since I had never done hospital work before, I'm in a training status, so the goals and deadlines were explained at the time of my hire.  At the time, it didn't sound too hard to achieve, but these Indian doctors give me fits.  (I can do the good 'ol boys all day.  Heard that accent all my life! )  I have a few samples, and they help some, but not enough, apparently.  Plus, I'm so nervous, I make dumb mistakes.  Truth be told, I don't like it there and felt I had made a mistake accepting this job by the second month.  The hospital platform is cumbersome and slow and the people aren't exactly friendly, either.  I know a lot of this is my fault--I just don't fit in and don't ask questions when I should, rather just slog through and try to figure problems out myself.
best city
Believe it or not, Cleveland, Ohio. I've lived all over the Midwest and East Coast and loved Chicago and Minneapolis, but the people in Cleveland were definitely the friendliest. Easy to make friends and cost of living was pretty decent. Also lots of fun night life and great museums.
Sex and the City is definitely up there at the top. nm

what city are you in? nm
nm
Know the city well, you can get 1 of the
weekly hotels and live from there. I would not like this situation at all- if he has worked there for awhile, just making until May should not make that much difference. Had home right in Atlanta and sold year before last, moved further towards Rex.
So he's never even been TO the city before? sm
Just from what you've posted, it sounds like he is sorely underprepared to take this job. No sales experience and never been to NYC, but taking a job doing cold-call sales in the toughest city? YIKES.
NYC is great city, full of life and energy, but man you have to be prepared.

LOTS of info can be found online, of course; just start Googling. Everything from maps of the subway system, to where to park, etc. Travel guides at the bookstore can help.
Seriously, what kind of a company gives the new guy the Manhattan territory? And then gives no informational support? The whole story gives me a bad feeling. Hopefully I'm just missing details.
sex and the City
I know some of us are working tonight, like me, but have any of you seen the movie sex and the City tonight and how was it?  I hope to see it this weekend between shifts.
