Lice prevention -- distilled white vinegar (sm)

Posted By: No Name on 2007-04-17
In Reply to: Has anyone ever used Vasoline to get rid of lice? If so, sm - how do you get it out?

After shampooing, rinse hair with 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water, protecting eyes.

My mom used this prevention faithfully on all of us and none of us ever had lice infestation, just shiny hair.

Magic of vinegar.
Everybody always tells about the magic of vinegar. I got to learn firsthand today about it. I pulled a real stu*id one this morning, left some food in the microwave too long remembered it when I smelled it burning. Pulled it out and it was black and stunk up the whole house. I opened all the windows, froze my butt off (it's cold here) and no luck. I looked on the internet and found a site that said to boil some water and vinegar on the stove and it will take the burnt odor away. I used about 3 cups of vinegar and 2 quarts of water and simmered it on the stove for 3 hours and the smell is totally gone. What a relief. Thought I was never going to get rid of that odor.  Now all I smell is the roast I have in the oven. And no, it's definitely not going to get burnt!
Oh wow! Look at the spit and vinegar!

'Tit's okay.  I'm just psyched a few people clicked on the link!  Right before I went to bed last night there were only about 5 clicks to see what I wrote, and one of them was mine makin' sure the link worked!

Right after I posted, there was a woman in the stall pulling the baby (okay, foal) out of the mamma horse (mare).  I still don't know if it was a boy (colt) or a girl (filly), but haven't logged on yet today to see if they put something on their website to tell one way or another.  I don't see any nuggets hanging down, but I don't think the camera zooms in to check under the hood.

That website, marestare.com has oodles of live cams posted on the internet for people to watch horses (even donkeys!) give birth.  My boss was on IM last night and I let her know and both she and her daughter got to watch it.  I think they are hooked!  Good clean entertainment...well, maybe not CLEAN...even I was ooged out at seeing what I can only imagine was the placenta hanging out of the horse until she expelled it.  But still, of all the junk out there on the internet...good stuff in my opinion!

Just had to tell you that yesterday I bought the apple cider vinegar s/m
tablets for severe unrelenting hot flashes. I felt bad all day yesterday and was hoping it was not due to the pills. I only took two because of that. Went to bed early and today I have had a total of 2 hot flashes so far and it is 12 noon. I would have literally had dozens of terrible hot flashes by now.  Thanks to all of you who shared your thoughts about ACV and for the dear poster who told me it was available in pill form. I honestly think this may be my answer. I feel like a new person and pray this continues. I can't believe the improvement after taking 2 tablets yesterday!     THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
Would love measurements for vinegar pie, can you use graham crust?
Still time for one more pie!
Another tip on the lice

Put all dolls, stuffed animals that cannot be washed in garbage bags tied shut for at least 2 weeks.  Make sure and wash pillows, blankets, bedspreads, combs, brushes, hair bows, clips, barettes, pony tail holders, etc.  Wash any jackets they've recenty worn.  Spray all upholstered furniture and mattresses and air out, then vacuum thoroughly!  Vacuum carpet.  Spray and vacuum your vehicle, too.  The little critters are tenacious!

Been there, done that, shoulda had a T-shirt!!!  I feel for you!!

lice
My kids got headlice a couple of years ago. Everything I read said that getting it has nothing to do with how clean you keep yourself and nothing can prevent it other than avoiding close contact with someone else who has it or avoiding having coats hung close together. Since both of those happen at school there is really nothing you can do to prevent it and just have to keep a close eye out for it so if one kid does get it it doesn't spread to the rest of the family and it's easier to get rid of before it reproduces. Some people want to wash regularly with lice shampoo as a preventative measure but supposedly that would be toxic to you if you used it regularly.
Has anyone ever used Vasoline to get rid of lice? If so, sm

The girl that cuts our hair suggested we use Vasoline on our three daughters to get rid of the lice. I used that, but am having a hard time getting the Vasoline out!! I tried using Dawn dish soap to cut through the greese. That helped some. I also read that peanut butter will get it out...so we used that also! This all worked fine on my daughter with fine, thin hair, but my other two have very thick hair and it is not helping them! Please help if you have any ideas or if you have ever done this treatment! Thanks!!

Any advice for lice? - sm
My kids came home with this almost 2 months ago, got rid of them (I think---all 4 of us had them and 3 of us are clean now), but 2 weeks ago my older daughter had a new outbreak. I have treated 3-4 x with Rid and Nix (Nix the second time around per doctor), olive oil, and listerine/vinegar.  Called the doctor again last night begging for the prescription (they don't want to give it unless all other remedies fail) after I found 2 live lice on her head, an adult male and female, lucky me.  My daugher's head appears to be nit free, though she does have a lot of dandruff now between the lice making it and the poisons I have put on her head.  Now the doctor wants me to try 50:50 of mineral oil and vinegar. I could not do it last night as I had already had her wash her hair after I found the 2 lice (did Nix again last night). I am so sick of these things.  I have washed, and washed, and washed, vacuumed, etc. until I never want to wash or vacuum another thing in my life.  My kids stuffed animals, etc. have been bagged up in the garage now for 8 weeks.....never undid them luckily....so at least I had a little less to do this time.  ----the other thing that tics me off is the girl next to my daugher on the bus has them too, probably from mine but who knows, and the policy is that the child has to contain their hair for a week or two until the nurse declares her clean.  This girl is not pulling her hair back in a ponytail because she does not like them.  I complained to the nurse once, and am doing so again today.  So that probably is not going to change so I had the bus driver move my daughter today from that seat....they sit 3 to a seat and they are mashed together, hence easy transfer of a bug crawling from one head to another. My daughter was not happy about it, but this other girls mother is convince they are "cured" as she put listerine on her daughter's head and said she is fine now.  If one time fixed it then lice would not be such a problem.  I really think this lady is in LA la land considering the trouble I am having, and I have combed, and combed too, so I am not doing the half-assssseeedddd either.  So does anyone have anything that they swear by?  I know I could make my kid go to bed with mayo on her head for 10 days straight and that would in theory eradicate them, or any smothering agent, and it may come to that, but if anyone has anything else, please feel free to tell!
No. I have heard that lice do not like
coconut scented shampoo, but I don't know of one that prevents it.
lol, about the head lice comment
never thought of that, and would not be surprised if that was it, she's pretty filthy. Dollars to donuts that was why she shaved the other *hair* LOL!
Getting rid of lice without the medicated stuff

My daughter also developed an allergy after multiple treatments (we finally found out that they had infested the rug in the reading area).  My grandmother told me that before they had those shampoos this is what they did.

My mother says mayonaise works but I was at my wits end so I went all out.

On Friday night I washed my daughters hair (which was down to her butt)

We then took Vaseline and worked it into her hair. making sure that every bit of her hair was covered.  Sounds gross I know.  We then braided the back of her hair and stuck it in a sock,  We then fashioned a kerchief over her head to keep it all covered.  We left it this way until Saturday evening ( we made a day of it watching movies ordered pizza played board games to keep her mind off of it).

On Satuday evening we took Dawn dishwashing liquid and washed her hair a couple of times.  The combed the nits out.  Nothing was alive.

Her hair was a little oily for a day or two but we washed it each night with a shampoo for oily hair.  It worked great.

Also for the rest of the school year we have problems with other kids never really getting rid of their lice but she never got them again but per G-ma's advice she did not go to school with her hair loose the rest of the year.  It was always neatly french braided with some styling gel over it to hold it and I was told that the gel also deterred the lice.

Good luck feel free to message me if you have any questions

I tell you what shampoo WILL prevent lice...sm
At Sally's the generic Paul Mitchell's tea tree oil shampoo. Tea Tree Oil kills lice so if you shampoo with it it prevents them. It is not a lice killer it is just regular shampoo. It smells a lot like peppermint to me. I used it when my son started kindergarden because I didn't want him to get lice. Kids in his clss had it and he never got it. It is a little expensive but worth it to me.

I have been told that lice don't like dirty hair - sm
and when there is an outbreak at school to use mousse in the hair as it is sticky, etc. and the lice don't like it. Don't know if it is true but it makes some sense, though if this girl is always dirty and still has lice (especially if they like clean heads) then that kind of makes no sense. I am not sure of our schools policy but I think it is one where the kid is not allowed back until they can prove they don't have it any longer. So far we have had no lice reports this year, had about 3 last year. My DH has a cow over them and I tell my girls not to share hats, combs, brushes, etc. , and when we have the lice scares I use mousse on them for a week or so. So far so good. ---One solution they could do for the girl is to shave her head, no hair, no lice, though it is a drastic solution but I know a family that did that as they had a strain of resistant lice that just would not go away no matter what they did.
how ignorant to compare lice with neglect.
It's merely a case of misinformation or improper education to her family on how to treat the problem, in no way is lice infestation and lack of getting rid of them completely a sign of neglect.

Maybe this mom just plain doesn't understand how to get rid of them completely or perhaps there are other things going on in her life that this isn't getting dealt with properly. They need support not ridicule as some of the posters have said - obviously since you've been there you should know it isn't as easy as people think to get rid of them.
I've never heard that it prevents lice. That's a new one to me.
I always thought that children's shampoos were marketed saying that they didn't sting the eyes. I never found that to be true, however. Johnson's Baby Shampoo stings my eyes. Some contain detanglers, but I had boys who always had short hair, so that wasn't an issue for us. From the time they were babies until now, I've always bought whatever was on sale or least expensive. Most times, that turns out to be Suave.

6 pumpkin pies, 2 vinegar pies and a chocolate chiffon pie sm
So now that I have caught your attention...just what is a vinegar pie, you ask.

In the south, they are referred to as transparent pie. You will sometimes hear it called sweet and sour pie. It is good real cider vinegar, the kind with the mother at the bottom, brown sugar, white sugar, butter and eggs, a bit of flour. It is like water when you put in the shell. You bake it for an hour and it comes out about like the goo in a pecan pie with no nuts. It is not sour a bit, nor is it sickly sweet. It is sweet with a bit of an apple bite. The kids love it and when younger son is home for the holidays, he will devour one of them at a sitting. He literally comes in and sees the vinegar pie, takes one and says: So...what is everyone else having? The other son won't eat pumpkin or vinegar, so he has the chocolate chiffon. The rest of us are pumpkin eaters.
Is it a white frosting? could this be it?

I don't know if this is crunchy, but it does get sort of a crust on the outside after awhile.  If this isn't it, maybe some more info?
FLUFFY BOILED FROSTING
1 1/2 cups sugar
2/3 cup water
1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar
3 egg whites
Pinch salt
1 teaspoon vanilla

In a heavy saucepan combine sugar, water and cream of tartar. Slowly bring mixture to a boil, stirring sides of the saucepan with a brush dipped in water to remove any sugar crystals. Cover and boil for about 3 minutes or until a candy thermometer registers 245 degrees.

Beat egg whites with pinch of salt until glossy and peaked. Slowly pour in syrup as you continue to beat the whites. Beat until cool and frosting is soft and fluffy. Fold in vanilla

No , they are white and after knowing them

You want the truth or a little white lie?
I ate 3 great big peppers and that is the truth. No one else here, hubs told me he does not like. I usually do not cook but decided I wanted some and got all my ingredients together and they were really, really good. Double burp....
Is everything always black and white?

I'm not sure if I'm missing something here or what, please tell me what your thoughts are - believe me I'm ready for anything anyone can tell me.

Situation - dad is out of work.  He's 72 years old.  He's going through the employement agency, applying to at least 3 places a week, if not more.  He can't retire and live off social security and military retirement because they don't pay enough.  He has been living with his girlfriend (which I consider wife) for over 25 years.  They live in a moderate size house, but it's a little strange arrangment.  He has 2 bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs, she has bedroom/bathroom downstairs but everything else they share.  My mom told me years ago that she believes he proposed to her and gave her an engagement ring but she couldn't be sure (mom and dad stayed friends after they divorced - as long as they weren't together for more than an hour :-o)  Anyway...unemployment office set him up with a free email so he could apply to places and give an email address (it was through something called ymail).  Dad said he was going to go through 2 days of computer training per the employment agency, that way he would at least know how to turn on a computer.  He's got a good sense of humor, is in just a bit of a rut but he keeps applying and hoping he'll get something, but he did tell me he has to be realistic and what place is going to hire a 72 year old man.  He's had a long history of injuries, had his ankle pinned years ago and every once in awhile will need to use a cane, but for the most part he gets around very very well.

Now...here's the deal (oh yes, I forgot to say he lives on the other side of the country from me).  Anyway...yesterday my sister calls and said dad was there (at her house) and asked if he could check his email but she didn't know how to get on.  I tried to see if I could help but we could not pull up anything and I was on my way out the door.  So I called back and this is what she told me (which is why I'm wondering if I over react or not react enough or what, or is my sister just a cruel-hearted you know what).  I told her I was sorry I couldn't help more but I had to be somewhere before they closed.  She said it was okay because it was taking forever and he couldn't wait around.  Then she said "you know dad is going to have a hard time finding something because he is so particular".  I asked what she meant and she said he's being too picky.  I again tried to figure out what she meant.  She said there are jobs he could do but he won't.  She said that he told the agency that he needs a job where he can get home at night because he has some animinals he has to take care of (in other words he can't be gone for days like driving truck).  He also said he couldn't do a job where he would have to be running up and down stairs and running from building to building because of his ankle and being 72 years old.  He said most everything esle he would do. Except that he doesn't want a job where he has to drive so far that whatever he makes would just be paid in gas to get there (which there were a couple jobs like that).  He called me and said if he wanted to truck drive he could get a job, but the places want him to relocate across country (and not near us), so he told them no.  Well my sister got upset and was telling me that he could relocate cos he has no ties there (which I was surprised to hear because she is close to him and I would think she wouldn't want him to move).  I told her what does she mean no ties.  I said he's been with his girl (thank goodness I didn't call her a wife) for over 20 years, he has a house (even though his name is not on the ownership papers he takes care of it, repairs, etc), and he has about 7 cats.  I told her he's 75 years old (to which she about bit my head off and said he's 72).  Then she proceeded to tell me he has no ties to his girlfriend.  She said he lives in 2 bedrooms upstairs, and the house is hers and she need to learn to live on her own.  So from that I took it she doesn't think highly of his girlfriend, which I happen to think she's a very nice lady.  I remember a few years ago after my mom died my dad told us what his wishes are (he has papers, a plot and all that stuff so if anything happens its all taken care of), but at one point something happened to him and my sister (who happens to have joined a mormon church) told me that if he died his girlfriend should have no say in what happens (service wise).  I knew what she was getting to because the same thing happened when my mom died.  Mom had cancer and I talked to her often in the hospital.  She asked me if I had strong feelings about what kind of funeral service she had.  I asked mom what kind did she want to have.  She said she was a strong episocopal, but my sister really wanted to have her church do something.  I told her don't worry about me just do what you want to do.  She said she didn't want to hurt my sisters feelings.  Anyway...she didn't have a mormon service, but a guy from my sisters church came and spoke at the funeral parlor about my mom (even though he didn't know her - kind of was uncomfortable listening to him, but at that point I didn't care and my sister was really happy).  However, afterwards one night my sister asked if I was upset about him talking and I said no of course not (which I wasn't).  She said she was glad because she had talked to mom before she died and mom was so curious about being a mormon and said she had wished she had time to become a mormon before she died (which I knew was a lie because I had been talking to my mom all along).  I just said that was weird because whenever mom talked to me she said how strong she was in the protestant faith.  Anyway...sorry for the side step, but I think what my sis was getting at was that when my dad dies my sis wants to run the funeral and have a full blown mormon service (which I know for a fact my dad doesn't want - he's catholic, but just doesn't go to church, but does cite the rosary and knows more about that faith and that is what he believes (he comes from a long line of catholics).  Anyway...sorry for that detraction too, but I was just shocked to hear my sister say she think my dad who is 72 years old should box all his belongings up and move across country and try to start a whole new life in an area he doesn't know.

So, are things black and white or does my sister just not have any sense.  My aunt (mom's sis) told me one time that my sister doesn't have one shred of compassion for anyone.  My aunts dog died and my aunt cried for days and days and days and my sister never called her to see how she was doing.  Also sis's MIL was very sick and sis treated her horribly.  Sis sees things in black and white and she will say things that I think to myself how can she say that, that is not how we were raised.  Yet she always has compassion for those in her church, just not family.

Okay, sorry to drone on.  Just felt frustrated.  What do you think  Believe me you can say anything you want, you will not hurt my feelings.

why do "socks for sleeping have to be white*??

Yes - white boards that you write on
the very thinnest you can buy as they are lightweight so not hard for you to take up and down and not all that ugly really if you don't cover them!! We decided on white wall as when we first started shopping we were going to try and hang white boards that we had purchased at Staples/WalMart but realized so much cheaper to buy pieces of wood and cut ourselves - plus will hand down to kids/grandkids when we no longer need so they can draw on them!! I use a fan also in the summer as I have ADD and any interruption noise interrupts my concentration so totally understand the fan - just way too cold for me in the winter and son who works for power company noted they are not exactly energy efficient :( Good luck - let us know!! Thank you also because I never thought about actually covering with fabric until your original post - it would also protect the corners as concerned I might drop on my leather couch at some point and poke a hole in them - although they really are not that sharp - just being cautious I guess!! :))

First off, the girl is still a child. Second, her parents gave her the pepper spray and she takes it everywhere with her. It just so happens one of those places is school. She was not trying to *disregard rules* as you put it. Next, the teacher found it and was a little nosey IMO, I mean its not like she had it out in class and was playing with and showing it to everyone. Also, the mother stated she did not realize it was considered a weapon. A mistake was made on their part and not intentially disregarding school rules IMO, but someone has to come up with a solution to protect this CHILD, so her parents will feel secure in letting her go to school. And I agree with below, parents cannot be with any child 24/7 until they are home school.
