Getting rid of lice without the medicated stuff

Posted By: MTT on 2007-11-30
In Reply to: My daughter came home from school with yet another letter...sm - Angry and venting

My daughter also developed an allergy after multiple treatments (we finally found out that they had infested the rug in the reading area).  My grandmother told me that before they had those shampoos this is what they did.

My mother says mayonaise works but I was at my wits end so I went all out.

On Friday night I washed my daughters hair (which was down to her butt)

We then took Vaseline and worked it into her hair. making sure that every bit of her hair was covered.  Sounds gross I know.  We then braided the back of her hair and stuck it in a sock,  We then fashioned a kerchief over her head to keep it all covered.  We left it this way until Saturday evening ( we made a day of it watching movies ordered pizza played board games to keep her mind off of it).

On Satuday evening we took Dawn dishwashing liquid and washed her hair a couple of times.  The combed the nits out.  Nothing was alive.

Her hair was a little oily for a day or two but we washed it each night with a shampoo for oily hair.  It worked great.

Also for the rest of the school year we have problems with other kids never really getting rid of their lice but she never got them again but per G-ma's advice she did not go to school with her hair loose the rest of the year.  It was always neatly french braided with some styling gel over it to hold it and I was told that the gel also deterred the lice.

Good luck feel free to message me if you have any questions

Medicated Gold Bond........
Gold Bond may do the trick. When my grandmother was bedridden, she kept getting rashes under her breasts and arms. The doctors gave my mother Rx's all the time to try on her but they never worked. I gave her some Gold Bond to use and after a couple of days, she called and said it had dried the rash up and it was barely visible and had started going away. This rash had been there for months! All the prescriptions and this is all it took. Give it a try.

Another tip on the lice

Put all dolls, stuffed animals that cannot be washed in garbage bags tied shut for at least 2 weeks.  Make sure and wash pillows, blankets, bedspreads, combs, brushes, hair bows, clips, barettes, pony tail holders, etc.  Wash any jackets they've recenty worn.  Spray all upholstered furniture and mattresses and air out, then vacuum thoroughly!  Vacuum carpet.  Spray and vacuum your vehicle, too.  The little critters are tenacious!

Been there, done that, shoulda had a T-shirt!!!  I feel for you!!

lice
My kids got headlice a couple of years ago. Everything I read said that getting it has nothing to do with how clean you keep yourself and nothing can prevent it other than avoiding close contact with someone else who has it or avoiding having coats hung close together. Since both of those happen at school there is really nothing you can do to prevent it and just have to keep a close eye out for it so if one kid does get it it doesn't spread to the rest of the family and it's easier to get rid of before it reproduces. Some people want to wash regularly with lice shampoo as a preventative measure but supposedly that would be toxic to you if you used it regularly.
Has anyone ever used Vasoline to get rid of lice? If so, sm

The girl that cuts our hair suggested we use Vasoline on our three daughters to get rid of the lice. I used that, but am having a hard time getting the Vasoline out!! I tried using Dawn dish soap to cut through the greese. That helped some. I also read that peanut butter will get it out...so we used that also! This all worked fine on my daughter with fine, thin hair, but my other two have very thick hair and it is not helping them! Please help if you have any ideas or if you have ever done this treatment! Thanks!!

Any advice for lice? - sm
My kids came home with this almost 2 months ago, got rid of them (I think---all 4 of us had them and 3 of us are clean now), but 2 weeks ago my older daughter had a new outbreak. I have treated 3-4 x with Rid and Nix (Nix the second time around per doctor), olive oil, and listerine/vinegar.  Called the doctor again last night begging for the prescription (they don't want to give it unless all other remedies fail) after I found 2 live lice on her head, an adult male and female, lucky me.  My daugher's head appears to be nit free, though she does have a lot of dandruff now between the lice making it and the poisons I have put on her head.  Now the doctor wants me to try 50:50 of mineral oil and vinegar. I could not do it last night as I had already had her wash her hair after I found the 2 lice (did Nix again last night). I am so sick of these things.  I have washed, and washed, and washed, vacuumed, etc. until I never want to wash or vacuum another thing in my life.  My kids stuffed animals, etc. have been bagged up in the garage now for 8 weeks.....never undid them luckily....so at least I had a little less to do this time.  ----the other thing that tics me off is the girl next to my daugher on the bus has them too, probably from mine but who knows, and the policy is that the child has to contain their hair for a week or two until the nurse declares her clean.  This girl is not pulling her hair back in a ponytail because she does not like them.  I complained to the nurse once, and am doing so again today.  So that probably is not going to change so I had the bus driver move my daughter today from that seat....they sit 3 to a seat and they are mashed together, hence easy transfer of a bug crawling from one head to another. My daughter was not happy about it, but this other girls mother is convince they are "cured" as she put listerine on her daughter's head and said she is fine now.  If one time fixed it then lice would not be such a problem.  I really think this lady is in LA la land considering the trouble I am having, and I have combed, and combed too, so I am not doing the half-assssseeedddd either.  So does anyone have anything that they swear by?  I know I could make my kid go to bed with mayo on her head for 10 days straight and that would in theory eradicate them, or any smothering agent, and it may come to that, but if anyone has anything else, please feel free to tell!
No. I have heard that lice do not like
coconut scented shampoo, but I don't know of one that prevents it.
lol, about the head lice comment
never thought of that, and would not be surprised if that was it, she's pretty filthy. Dollars to donuts that was why she shaved the other *hair* LOL!
I tell you what shampoo WILL prevent lice...sm
At Sally's the generic Paul Mitchell's tea tree oil shampoo. Tea Tree Oil kills lice so if you shampoo with it it prevents them. It is not a lice killer it is just regular shampoo. It smells a lot like peppermint to me. I used it when my son started kindergarden because I didn't want him to get lice. Kids in his clss had it and he never got it. It is a little expensive but worth it to me.
Lice can't be smothered! You have to kill them. Get the Rid or the Nix or whatever. Any critters

I have been told that lice don't like dirty hair - sm
and when there is an outbreak at school to use mousse in the hair as it is sticky, etc. and the lice don't like it. Don't know if it is true but it makes some sense, though if this girl is always dirty and still has lice (especially if they like clean heads) then that kind of makes no sense. I am not sure of our schools policy but I think it is one where the kid is not allowed back until they can prove they don't have it any longer. So far we have had no lice reports this year, had about 3 last year. My DH has a cow over them and I tell my girls not to share hats, combs, brushes, etc. , and when we have the lice scares I use mousse on them for a week or so. So far so good. ---One solution they could do for the girl is to shave her head, no hair, no lice, though it is a drastic solution but I know a family that did that as they had a strain of resistant lice that just would not go away no matter what they did.
how ignorant to compare lice with neglect.
It's merely a case of misinformation or improper education to her family on how to treat the problem, in no way is lice infestation and lack of getting rid of them completely a sign of neglect.

Maybe this mom just plain doesn't understand how to get rid of them completely or perhaps there are other things going on in her life that this isn't getting dealt with properly. They need support not ridicule as some of the posters have said - obviously since you've been there you should know it isn't as easy as people think to get rid of them.
I've never heard that it prevents lice. That's a new one to me.
I always thought that children's shampoos were marketed saying that they didn't sting the eyes. I never found that to be true, however. Johnson's Baby Shampoo stings my eyes. Some contain detanglers, but I had boys who always had short hair, so that wasn't an issue for us. From the time they were babies until now, I've always bought whatever was on sale or least expensive. Most times, that turns out to be Suave.
Lice prevention -- distilled white vinegar (sm)
After shampooing, rinse hair with 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water, protecting eyes.

My mom used this prevention faithfully on all of us and none of us ever had lice infestation, just shiny hair.

GPS stuff

As a family we do something called "Geocaching" (geocaching.com) which uses GPSs and coordinates from the internet to do a 21st century treasure hunt.  Over the past 5 years we've had both Garmin and Magellan devices . . . if I had an option, I'd choose a Garmin.  Our first Magellan let me download maps, etc... which showed me where restaurants, hotels, etc... were, which was a super bonus on vacation with a 1-year-old and a cranky need-food-now mommy!  We vacation in Maine, and there are only so many roads, so if you can't read a map, a GPS won't help much  !  Have you tried out "www.thegpsstore.com"?  They have reviews, etc... that might help you sort out what you need, and what you really don't.  Some systems may cost $75, but you won't be able to download maps or anything.  However, the big bucks versions might have too many bells and whistles that will just make it more of a hassle than a joy.  I'd also suggest a sporting goods store, i.e. Cabellas, Dicks Sporting Goods, EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports) since the salespeople will more likely have a clue about how to use the thing and be able to tell you pros/cons of each system.

Sorry for the ramble . . . hope I didn't confuse the issue even more!

Never, but I look at the stuff on there a lot.
Money is tight right now, so I never bought, but most of the stuff is cool. Some of its just weird - once I saw homemade reusable tampons made out of bamboo and yarn I think.
I do stuff like that
I have to say that probably it is the thin skin of your daughter and not your lack of experience with death. I rarely say anything to my teenager (when they are upset) that is the "correct" thing to say. I think the drama is actually coming from these young people's first experiences with death, and I have found that teenagers can be profoundly sensitive to even the deaths of people they do not know.

You are just "mom." Your job is to keep her from going over the emotional cliff. Even when it is a member of your own family, that is still your primary job. That "everything is going to be okay" is the correct thing to say.
fun stuff!
I jumped on my sister in an elevator because I'm cool like that and because someone offered me 1,000,000 dollars.

My son's did not turn out so well at all . . .

I loved my brother under your bed because that's how I roll.
If he wants to come and get his stuff, that
is fine. But I would not have him bring an officer, I would have him set a time to do so and YOU have an officer there with your paperwork on the restraining order.
I'm sorry all that stuff happened to you, too, and
am more glad that you moved on as well!  Thanks for bringing me perspective again. I have to run now -- off to the happy world of MTing.
The stuff is awesome!
Works when nothing else does.

Anyone have MP3/IPOD stuff?? sm
i'm thinking of getting an MP3 player so when i walk i won't have this bulky CD player in my pocket.  i know you download music on it, but can you take one of your own music CDs, put that music on the computer and then download that music off the computer into your MP3?  did that make sense?  just thought i'd see if anyone here knew how that stuff works.  thanks!
Then you might want to try some fresh stuff.
I just made a turkey breast today that was very tasty. In a little olive oil, salt, and pepper, I chopped up some fresh rosemary, thyme, sage, and a couple cloves of crushed garlic. Then, I just rubbed that onto the (skinless) turkey breast.

I oven-roasted that with some vegetables, but you could put that on chicken breasts and bake or grill them. They'd be good either way.

Good luck!
Has anyone else watched this stuff?
I watched this on CNN last night and this guy had been planning this for a LONG time. Even the news station had to edit the video because of language and could not show all the pictures either, much less read anything of what he wrote. One newscaster did say, however, after reading over some of what this guy was spouting off in his video, was that the whole motive behind any of this was envy. Envy of what other people had, as far as possessions. He even idealized himself as a martyr, comparing himself to Jesus Christ. This guy had been stated as being an imminent danger to himself and others two years ago by a clinical psychologist! Now really, I seriously do not think any of his sick psychosocial mental fixations had anything to do with him being from korea! He was just a walking time bomb that exploded. JMO
I love that stuff too
It usually takes everything right off my stove in just a few minute. I also sometimes use that old fashioned stuff that now comes in a creamy liquid formula now called Barkeepers Friend. It even takes pot marks off my sink. I also recently discovered those cool white Magic Erasers Plus and now those three products are all I need except dish soap and window cleaner! Why did they wait so long to invent those Magic Erasers anyway?
They have jobs & pay for all their own stuff. Just have to do away

strong stuff
I use to sell the stuff and let me tell you the backing should not hurt the flooring.  Actually, I took a screwdriver and tried to scrap, chip or just try to mar the surface of the flooring and I could not even scratch it at all.
Follow up on this cat stuff
I just got back from the store and bought some hairball control dry cat food. The older cat I spoke about drinks water so no problem there. I got the dry as well as several cans of wet hairball control so probably will mix a little of the wet with dry to start out with. I also bought glove to run over the cat and get rid of some of the excessive fur. This is not a common shedding as she has had for sometime, surprised she has any left. I have hairball gel that I could give them in addition to this. Thanks for the insight!
you can now get the freeze stuff OTC

ME TOO i hate that stuff.

Why do men throw out our stuff and keep theirs?

Hubby did it again! I had to work a couple hours this morning and in the meantime, he decided to clean out the linen closet.

Things he kept: All his stuff, plus old towels that are good for rags.

Things he threw out: My shampoos, my curling irons, make-up, my electric shaver, etc. When I asked where they were, he burned them! My curling irons were brand new!

Is he trying to tell me something?

This is not the first time he's done something like that. I hate not being here when he gets a "whim" like this, but I never thought he'd throw out my good stuff.

agree with you. This stuff has not been
available long enough to make a determination. I am reminded of Avandia which almost put my mother in the hospital because she was one of the few to have increase in fluids from it. The docs kept telling her that it was impossible that Avandia was the problem. I spoke to one OB-Gyn and one infectious disease doctor, both of whom did not recommend this vaccine, one saying why was it only for girls. This was about 2 years ago when our gov was considering making it mandatory in Tx, too. One doc said it was a lot of hype as it only protected against 4 of the more than 200 strains known. One research physician on a radio show claims it actually is a cancer trigger for later in life, so who knows? Afraid abstinence is the only sure prevention. BTW, sex ed in school does not seem to have prepared students for orally transmitted STD's - go figure.
Getting over holding onto your stuff sm
It is hard to part with things but sometimes (depending on where you live) you can "buy" a table at a craft show/bazaar, etc. Check the price - they go from $10 to $500 around here for a spot. Just check to see if you can go under their license and sales tax # and just "sell". Once you sell the first piece, it will give you an incentive to sell more. Also, if you trust E-bay, some people will buy anything on there. I don't know how to trust -- my problem, don't want to be flim-flammed. My sons both had bad experiences on there. My sister buys and sells all the time. She also sells the beads right off her neck if someone admires them. It's all a matter of passion in your belly, opportunity and researching how to do it. At some of these craft fairs you can "barter" with others, i.e., they may like a Halloween craft and you may like a Christmas ornament, so you "barter" and exchange. After you make your first dollar, you'll be ready to get into it. My sister does very well. I am the shy one. Perhaps that's why I chose transcription, I am a listener. Hope others can help you out with ideas.
LOVE this stuff
I use it mostly on my feet but my fingers too when they start getting chapped. It's a solid lotion that is beeswax based from a place called Beekeeper's Blend.
Maybe try Facebook for this stuff. nm
x
That is too funny! I swear, where do they come up this stuff?!?!?
x
Well, my son forgot lots of stuff when he
was young and I always made sure he had those things because it was my job as his mother. But, he was not an irresonsible child where I think it counted. He graduated honor roll at his school, band, cross country track team medals, and now he is in the Navy training to be a Navy Seal. I think I did a pretty good job for having such an irresponsible child.

Weird but good stuff

Mmmmm!  That does sound tasty!

I went to a pizza place and tried their "grilledchicken & strawberry salad."  Oh my god I am in love!  They had baby salad greens, sliced up strawberries, strips of grilled chicken, sunflower seeds, shredded jack cheese, and raspberry vinegrette...just delicious!  I would have NEVER tried strawberries or sunflower seeds (never mind both!) in a salad, but since then I have been making it myself almost every day now!

So nice to be "regular" for once now too if ya know what I mean

if this stuff works, you will be my new best friend!
