Oregon estimating 1.27 million Oregonians sick.

Posted By: 12,000 hospitalized; 2,500 killed by 1 person. on 2009-04-30
In Reply to: From my notes at the meeting. - Category 5 is 2 million people dead

Estimates
Oregon's plans for responding to a moderate pandemic assume one would sicken 1.27 million Oregonians, sending an estimated 12,000 to the hospital and killing 2,500. Health officials don't track every case of the flu but estimate that about 10 percent of Oregonians -- or 379,000 -- fall sick from regular, seasonal influenza on average each year. And across the country, influenza and its complications kill about 36,000 people and send 226,000 to hospitals.

Swine flu has not been identified in any of the samples tested from Oregon patients, but labs continue to process them. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have developed a confirmatory test for swine flu and are distributing it to states. Oregon should have those supplies by Monday, Kohn said.

I am sick and tired of the umpteen million calls every day

I am on a DO NOT CALL list and I cannot turn off my phone for another few days until the kids are out of school for the summer (school needs to be able to reach me in case of emergency.)

Today, I have had THREE organizations call me for donations to cancer research.

One call from the National Federation for the Blind.

One call from the National Firefighters Association.

This is a typical day.

I have caller ID but the school number shows private so when these places call and also show private name/number, I answer them.

How many times does one have to say DO NOT CALL ME AGAIN?

Criminy!

Okay, I'm done venting.

Sick of snow...sick of cold...sm
that lil ground rat just HAD to see his shadow, didn't he! aaarrrggghhh.
$2.65/gal here in Oregon...sm

DH and I drive cross country every year to Philly and for the past 3 years Oregon has been the highest place each time. Wyoming and Kansas have always been the best prices. We are not allowed to pump our own gas here, which believe it or not I miss doing! I can do it a lot faster than some of the people who work at some of our stations!

Thanks a million!
I started getting this error message and when I called my computer people they said I had downloaded something that corrupted my operating system. Who knows what they would have charged I had unhooked everything and taken it in and my computer is only a couple months old. Cannot thank you enough. Was just breezing through here and came upon the post. Downloaded the patch and it works.
Gas here in Oregon is...

$3.25 to $3.35 and has been for several weeks; we have been well over $3 for some time now. I am driving cross country to Philly next week and will look forward to paying (hopefully) a bit less. I live in the country, 25 miles from town, my husband drives to work every day 66 miles round trip. Not buying gas for one day may sound like something to do, but just think how much more people will buy on the 16th of the month. The fact is, if you have the $$$ and want to drive you will. I have an SUV, will take it cross country, and will pay what I have to. We have taken this trip every year for 4 years (twice in one year in 2005) and we have never seen a decrease in RVs, trucks, or traffic ever. We are a country obsessed with cars and driving. City dwellers with good public transporation are lucky, but those of us who live rurally make the trade off of paying more each time we go to town.

Yup, that was right here in Oregon
in fact it was the sister hospital of the hospital I worked in for 3 years. They had to call 911 because there was no doctor in the hospital. I don't think the surgeon was even there- they paged him and he told them to call 911.

The hospital was not leqally required to have a doctor on site 24/7 (can't remember the reason why) but they should not have done her surgery there because of that fact due to her age and the risks. They just didn't want to lose the money. They are history now, thank God.
FOG IN OREGON
Here in Portland, I can leave here and no fog and two miles away be fogged in so be care of what you say.  And it can be a light in one place and heavy in another causing a delay -- give her a break.  The counselor was WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.  I do not believe in pampering the children but they are children and must be handled as such.   These type of people should not be in these positions, they like the power over the kids and act like a warden in a prison.
Here in Oregon $3.48 and above...
and it has been high for quite a long time. My Explorer takes about $65 to fill, which is not too bad, and my husband's commuter Subaru fills up at about $35, also pretty reasonable. I was in line behind a Suburban the other day and it topped out at over $90. We are driving cross country in 3 weeks; good thing we have cash saved up for the gas bill we will get in June!
yep, 6 million

and no, she didn't keep working.  and surprise, the father of her six children all of a sudden decided they should finally get married.

i'm still miffed at her, cuz now i'll never win.  who ever heard of anybody who knew someone who won the lotto winning the lotto?

Oregon here
Man is it frustrating. I also have caller ID so I don't pick up, but what they do is this. They call and use an 887 number. I don't pick up and within 2 or 3 minutes later they call back with the "private name, private number", I don't pick up and maybe 5 minutes later they call back with a 800 number. Like I say, I don't pick up but it is very frustrating. Especially when you do pick up and nobody is there. I've picked up once or twice so I can tell them off but nobody is on the other line.
I live in Oregon

This happens so often out here in Oregon.  People go unprepared, onto roads that they do not know, no extra food, water, etc.  There were signs posted all over the road that they took -- "road closed by snow"  Bad road, etc.  But they ignored the signs and kept going.  They even moved rocks off of the road and kept on going.  With kids in the car, they should have turned around.   I really feel bad for them and my heart goes out to the mother but they had warnings all along the road and just ignored them.  That is what is going to live with her forever.  And to start out at 8 o'clock to go over mountain passes on roads you don't know -- just does not make sense to me.   That is one of the worst roads in Oregon and really is not a road just a logging road mainly.   My prayers are with them.   Again, I don't even head out from Portland in the winter without water, flares, shovel, blankets, food, etc. if I am even going on the Interstate down south to visit friends about 3 hours away because you never know what will happen.

Heard somewhere he would get $45 million
as being the executor or whatever the heck he is but I think more than that he probably should get some time. ET each night is chocked full of Howard, his sister, his brother and last night they were saying he is totally financed by his parents-- that is until he gets his grubby hands on that blood money. He is such a low life hanger-on, really a despicable type of slime.
Your father was a 1 in a million.
A lot of men would have left being walked on and demoralized but your dad didn't want to leave you to suffer it alone. Usually, even when a mother isn't fit to raise a goldfish, mothers still get custody of the kids, and that's sad. There are a lot of great dads out there and they really need to be given the praise they deserve. What a great dad you had. I can see why you cherish him so much.
I should say maybe $2.5 million home
it is really beautiful from the outside.  You can see there from the outside there is a very long hallway upstairs that goes from 1 end of the house to the other.
Oregon man says he's pregnant

Thomas Beatie, who used to be a woman, appeared in the most recent issue of The Advocate, a magazine for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender readers, Portland, Ore., television station KPTV reported.

Beatie wrote the article, which includes a picture of him while he was 22 weeks pregnant. According to the story, he went through a sex change, but decided only to have chest reconstruction and testosterone therapy.

Beatie was able to keep the reproductive organs he was born with. The article said he stopped getting the injections and was able to get pregnant.

Beatie, who lives in Bend, wrote he was once pregnant with triplets, but the pregnancy was life-threatening and he lost the fetuses. Now, Beatie said he and his wife, Nancy, are expecting a little girl in July.

In the article, Beatie described some of the challenges he and his wife have faced -- they said doctors won't treat them. The couple met 10 years ago and Nancy is not able to have children.

He wrote in The Advocate that their situation "sparks legal, political and social unknowns."

The couple were out of town Monday and unable to speak with the station.

to get something through the development process and submitted to FDA for approval. There is no incentive for the pharma or biotech companies to test an all natural product for safety and efficacy as they can't patent it and have exclusive rights in selling it.

I can count on one hand the number of prescriptions I've taken in my life. I don't understand why people will take a med if its something that will run its course and your body will take care of. My doctor is great that way. He'll tell me there is a prescription, but if I'm willing to give it time I don't need to take anything. Much rather that...my belief is that every med has some level of toxicity. I'll suffer through a headache or achy bones before taking an over the counter. There is a point where I'll give in an pop a few pain relievers, but it has to be really bad.

Portland Oregon? I think about retiring there

I dream of relocating to Oregon - because it's the only state that allows physician-assisted suicide so that people who have terminal diagnoses can end the life the way they want to.  (no flames please, to each his/her own).

Oregon mileage tax in place of gas tax
Hubby mentioned this to me yesterday...I said there's no way it would pass since it seems to be an intrusion of privacy...but apparently Oregon thinks it's a good idea. If it passes in Oregon, all the other states will follow in their footsteps and Big Brother will be truly be in the passenger seat. I'm all for going green and reducing oil consumption but I think this crosses the line.

South Georgia couple wins big.  He only bought 2 tickets, spend $2.00 and won 270 million.  They interviewed him on TV - they were living in a mobile home.  So happy for them.  Nice to see someone that humble and down to earth win.

Live in Oregon, just DH and me, spend about 400 a month...
give or take including cat supplies. Costco every 4 to 5 weeks. Love really good bread, yogurt, real half and half for my coffee and fresh fruit and veggies no matter what the cost. Eat out on an average of 4 times a week, lunch or dinner on our days off, not fast food (Ugh). Cook everything from scratch, no boxes or cans here, except for pasta. I don't eat red meat on a regular basis, chicken every now and then, but DH gets his steak, chops, whatever, ( I get the big pkg at Costco) at least twice a week. I have only seen a spike in dairy and bread products, but I won't buy cheap, to me it's not worth it; if I'm eating it, I want it to taste good and not be loaded with preservatives, etc. I'd rather spend 2.98 a pound for really good apples instead of 98 cents a pound for mealy ones. I'm Italian, so food is a religion for me and it better be good!
I'm in Eugene/Springfield area of Oregon
We just had a light dusting of snow in the night that melted off this afternoon, but we're supposed to get several inches on the valley floor with the next storm, Wednesday I think.
I'd work in Oregon with a real snowdog team.
I hear you can get to snow 10 months out of the year, and they have an outfit that takes tourists out with sled teams. And they let people bring their own dogs and hitch them up and do a little pulling with an experienced team. How fun would that be.

Woman Fined $1.9 Million For Illegally Downloading 24 Songs

(CNN) -- A federal jury Thursday found a 32-year-old Minnesota woman guilty of illegally downloading music from the Internet and fined her $80,000 each -- a total of $1.9 million -- for 24 songs.

Jammie Thomas-Rasset's case was the first such copyright infringement case to go to trial in the United States, her attorney said.

Attorney Joe Sibley said that his client was shocked at fine, noting that the price tag on the songs she downloaded was 99 cents.

She plans to appeal, he said.

Cara Duckworth, a spokeswoman for the Recording Industry Association of America, said the RIIA was "pleased that the jury agreed with the evidence and found the defendant liable."

"We appreciate the jury's service and that they take this as seriously as we do," she said.

Thomas-Rasset downloaded work by artists such as No Doubt, Linkin Park, Gloria Estefan and Sheryl Crow.

This was the second trial for Thomas-Rasset. The judge ordered a retrial in 2007 after there was an error in the wording of jury instructions.

The fines jumped considerably from the first trial, which granted just $220,000 to the recording companies.

Thomas-Rasset is married with four children and works for an Indian tribe in Minnesota.

You are sick
You need a therapist. You told another poster that you have a relative coming to visit - so, this relative can't go to dinner with you and your friend?

It's extremely obvious to any thinking person that you don't have many friends. Your arrogance and self-absorption come through in your every word. It would be interesting to get your friend's point of view on this. I'd bet my first born that this is NOT the first time you've done this, despite what you said to the poster above.

Right back at you - glad I don't know you either. I run in higher class circles.

I am sick about it
Did you see on the news the senator (I believe), an elderly gentlaman who was so furious about this. He said that the hottest places in h____ are for those who abuse God's innocent creatures. Good for him. I am waiting for the day when all of these offenses against animals are considered a felony.
sick with the flu right now
ahhhhhhhrrrrrrrgggggggg
when i am sick,
i keep on working and just try to take care of myself.  my husband was sick during his vacation and never stopped complaining about how tired he was, how terrible he felt, blah, blah, blah.  it drove me nuts!  he never offered any sympathy when i was ill AND working!  (pardon my whining)

Am I sick or what?
I am typing a lady with appendicitis.  Am I sick to think, "She's so lucky.  She got out of cooking Thanksgiving dinner."
How sick is that!!!
..
What a sick SOB....sm
Animal abuse REALLY fires me up. I am a true animal lover, especially dogs. I think they should break both of his front legs and he should not be given anything for pain either. They should let him sit there a couple days too before taking him to the hospital to have surgery to repair them. And while he is sitting there with two broke legs he should have to fend for himself. No tolerance at all when it comes to animal abuse. They wouldn't want me to be the judge in this case.
We were really sick here in TN...
for 2 weeks straight with a bad cold - horible cough, congestion, high fever, sore throat, body aches.  We were tested for flu and strep, both of which were negative.  Maybe could have been mono?  Anyway, I don't think I've ever been that sick in my life.
