Please research commercial pet foods

Posted By: Romey on 2006-11-08
In Reply to: Cat owners, I need some ideas....sm - Pet mom

Please read this article, Iams is not a good food, there are many many out there that are, just not found at the grocery store. Vets do not know either, they are not taught animal nutrition in the vet schools which are subsidized by the pet food companies. I was horrified when I found this information out, please please inform yourself on this subject and if you find the below article too lengthy, just Google commercial pet food ingredients and you will be horrified such as I was when I finally decided to research this after my Collie died covered in cancer. All for the animals.

I think you may be on to something with the diet - I worked with someone once who also had 3 boys and the youngest had some behavior probs that sound similar to your son's. . She changed his diet - cut out sugar and some other things (can't remember what) and she said he was like a completely different child. . It sounds nearly impossible that diet could make that much difference, but maybe it does. . I also agree you should keep searching for a counselor/psychiatrist until you find one that can help.
what are the 6 bad foods?
I really did not see that on her web site, but I do need to lose a little weight. I have never had a problem until this perimenopause, and now, I have middle aged spread! It is a little hard on my ego and my knees!
foods that I will not eat is...sm
Is head cheese.  Other than that, I will eat anything, aside from insects.  Anything spicy, and I mean seriously spicy, is my favorite.  Seafood, including raw (sushi, oysters and alike) is my favorite.  Organ meats are awsome.  I make the best chopped liver.  I also make my own schmaltz.  No opinions on goat voiced here, but it is excellent.  I die and go to heaven for Indian food.  I have learned to make my own, including naan.  You people are making me hungry.  My husband is disgusted by what I eat, but I say great, more for me!

I agree and I, too, try to eat foods without--sm
all these additives, such as hormone free chicken and no antibiotics. Finding foods without these are costly and difficult to find, but worth the cost to me.

As far as any warnings, I doubt it. They only warn about what the FDA tells them to warn about. Unless forced, they will not disclose anything, and that includes the pet food, as well. It is really sad when we cannot even trust our food manufacturers to potentially threaten our very lives with these things, just to make a buck!
I will be going to Whole Foods today to look for some of that - thanks! (nm)

What are your thoughts on organic foods?
Do you try to buy them wherever possible, or only if you happen to pick them up in error? If you intentionally buy them, why? Do they taste better, are they better for you, do you believe you're helping the environment?

http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/diet.fitness/04/13/cl.organics/index.html

Organic vs. conventional: What do experts say?

By Amy Spindler
CookingLight.com

The organic market is growing at a steady pace of nearly 20 percent annually, and that translates into organic alternatives in nearly every grocery aisle -- from snack foods to frozen meals to baked goods. "Everyone wants to be healthy and these foods convey an aura of health," says Marion Nestle, Ph.D., professor of nutrition, food studies, and public health at New York University and author of "What to Eat." Here, experts compare some of the benefits and drawbacks of going organic.

Are organic products more nutritious?
A few small studies have shown that some organic foods contain higher nutrient levels than conventional ones. For example, a recent study showed that organic ketchup had 57 percent more of the antioxidant lycopene than regular ketchup. But the wholesale claim that organics are more nutritious than conventional is ahead of the science. "More research is needed before it can be stated that organic foods provide more nutritional value," says Connie Diekman, M.Ed., R.D., director of university nutrition at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Organic foods may have other benefits, though. Charles Benbrook, Ph.D., chief scientist at The Organic Center, asserts that some organic products are less processed, which means they may contain fewer chemically adulterated ingredients (think hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, and preservatives).

Bottom line: "Read labels and look at each product in its own right," Benbrook says. An organic potato chip may contain as many calories and saturated fat grams as a conventional chip. "The price premiums associated with processed organic food are not as great as the premiums charged for organic whole foods," Benbrook says.

Are organic products healthier for the environment?
What's best for the environment is hotly debated among experts. "There is no scientifically accepted evidence that organic foods are better for the environment. Organic production allows natural pesticides, which can be toxic to humans and wildlife," says Alan McHughen, Ph.D., professor of botany and plant sciences at the University of California, Riverside. Organic fertilizers may also contain harmful bacteria, such as E. coli. Plus, organic farming yields only 75 to 90 percent of the crop of conventional systems, meaning that more land must be planted in order to have an equal return.

Organic advocates counter that chemicals used in conventional farming spread far beyond the fields where they are applied and have unintended consequences. "Synthetic pesticides have been linked to developmental and neurological problems," Benbrook says. "Organics eliminate synthetic pesticides and the damage they do to farmers, land, and drinking water."

Organic regulations also prohibit the use of genetic modification -- another thorny issue with as-yet unclear implications for the environment.

Bottom line: Focus on foods' benefit to your immediate environmen -- i.e. your body -- first. "A good diet means variety, balance, and moderation, regardless of the farming method that produced the food," McHughen says.

considered quality foods by whom? sm
I have heard many negative things about both of these pet foods for years. I do not consider them to be quality foods, by a long shot, and this was even before the tainted food scandal. That's what I am talking about.
Yeps lots of fav foods too
nm
I'm not picky and like most foods that others hate.
But, I won't touch chicken salad with a 10-foot pole! Hate the stuff! And ketchup. Ack! What a terrible way to use wonderful tomatoes!

protein-filled snacks/foods.....

Resist genetically engineered foods!
They think it might be related to the pet food problem because right now genetically engineered grains are only allowed in pet food. Some think it might be what's wiping out the honey bees and other pollinators. Some food is wind pollinated, like corn, but this could really limit our diets. Countries like China are big into these crops, and I was reading that in California, they are or were trying to pass laws that would prevent people from having any say about our food. Cross-pollination is pretty hard to prevent, so evening allowing them to be grown could be devastating. And they are being grown here, apparently, by big companies like Monsato (sp?).

What foods are native to your area of the country
Over years I have noticed that certain areas don't sell things I used to have growing up. Wondered what kind of things are in your parts of the country.
Two products we had in New England were:

Fluff - It's not like any marshmallow cream. It's light and fluffy and sooooo good. Make a peanut butter sandwich with it and you've got a fluffernutter (oh how I miss fluff).

Moxie - My dad lived on this stuff. I thought it was disgusting but never saw it anywhere else. It's a soda, and dad said it is made from natural ingredients. When you first drink it, it tastes like Sarsaparilla, but it makes you burp and comes up like kerosene (although I haven't drank kerosene before, but that's what it's like).

In California we have what is called an It's it. It is two oatmeal cookies with a nice thick chunk of vanilla ice cream between covered in chocolate. Never have found them outside of Calif. I believe the factory in in San Francisco.
Pet food - is there a web site that lists all the foods being recalled? nm

Worried about my golden retriever.

Saw on Yahoo about stockpiling foods/staples in anticipation (sm)
of prices continuing to go up and up.  I do tend to keep my freezer and pantry fairly well filled.  Certain things seem to go on sale in cycles and I try to take advantage of that.  Do grow a garden and may very well enlarge it this year.  Anyone else have suggestions on helping to defray the cost of putting food on the table.
Judy is right..... high protein, low carb foods

do all the research you can
to ask questions. i have not been through this but have had experiences with doctors and know you should ASK QUESTIONS. do not assume their way is the best way. also, if you do research on herbals and decide to take any of that, BE SURE TO TELL the oncologist because those can interact with other medications they give you. they need to know. get a second opinion. i think when people are scared about what could happen, they just assume the doctor is always right. you won't find out about what kind of treatment is available to you until you find out what stage you are in. i'm with the other poster, hopefully they have caught it in time. you will be in my prayers tonight. keep your chin up and ASK ASK ASK ASK. let us know how it goes for you. :)
Do your own research then - just like I did.
I was having numbness in the heel of my right hand. I heard that it probably wasn't true carpal tunnel, and that it was probably just nerve irritation from setting the heels of my hands down. I heard that SoftFlex gloves were made to protect the median nerve from exactly that. So I got some and started wearing them. Within DAYS the feeling was GONE. So now I'm a believer that it is worthwhile for any keyboarder/mouse user to simply try protecting the nerve from pressure. SoftFlex gloves are a convenient and inexpensive way to experiment on yourself instead of experimenting with surgery. Are you aware that surgery often fails to help people?
Obviously you have not done your own research :)
x
what research did you do - you just said
Geesh - this is what we call *double-speak* - the ca-ca is coming out of both sides of your mouth............
PLEASE research before you do it as the others said. sm
do a lot of research yourself on post tubal ligation syndrome! docs don't have a clue. here is one good site....http://www.tubal-reversal.net/post_tubal_ligation_syndrome.htm

if you decide to go forth with it, i had it done 7 years ago. my abdominal muscles were sore for 2-3 days but other than that no real pain immediately afterwards. it didn't keep me from working since i sit to work, lol. but the problems since the tubal, i would never ever recommend anyone getting a tubal. the list never ends and is as most say you eventually end up with hysterectomy and/or other surgeries due to the complications brought on by tubal. how about finding you a fertility monitor? you could tell when you were ovulating and know when you needed to be safe or avoid. i know it doesn't fix it long term, but i wouldn't encourage anyone to have a tubal after my experience and others i know.
From the research I did,
this is what you should expect from a good chiropractor. The suspect ones tend to want to you sign complex contracts for extended courses of treatment, but typically patients only need 6-8 weeks of treatment, similar to the plan given to Misty. If friends or neighbors have been to any, see who they recommend.
She really needs to research before she
makes a blanket statement about southerns and their "cultural" things. If I do not have all my facts, I keep my mouth shut. She should do the same.
Research before doing anything ... sm
Been there, done that. There's really no good answer. With kids, father's rights prevail. Rock solid proof of abuse of the kids doesn't always override his rights depending on the judge/location and how well his atty uses "parental alienation syndrome" against you. Emotional support and some tips are available at Kourtsforkids.com, battered women's custody conference, etc. Feel free to e-mail me off board if you would like. Be sure to ref MTStars board on subject line so I don't delete it.
while you research what you want to do.

Do your research
Plese do you research before moving to Florida, climate is nice and it is a nice place to live but very expensive. My house insurance alone was costing me 300 a month, on top of the house payment, because of the hurricaines and a lot of insurance companies were pulling out and not even writing new policies. If you are renting, it is still expensive but not quite as bad. The car insurance is also about twice what it is in the central US. I lived there for about 20 years and left 2 years ago because I wsa single with 1 child and it was too expensive.
Research
I think one would really have to research this to get a decent handle on it.

I believe some have said that global warming will actually end up causing an ice age ... all that cause and effect stuff can seem so nonsensical sometimes.

Even if it is happening on its own, I'm sure what we do affects our planet. How can it not? Everything has consequence.

It seems that it is better to do what is positive for the environment regardless of if it would prevent abnormal global warming or not. Why not err on the side of caution?

For those of you who read the bible (and take it literally) ... I think people made fun of Noah when he built the ark, too.
Do some research.
Check monster jobs, career builder, and some other local hospitals in your state to see what kind of salary the position might make. If you really don't mind and don't want to go too high, just have a number a little lower than that and ask. It sounds like you probably already had your yearly review which would have been the perfect time to ask but you could request a 6-month review after you have had these new responsibilities. I have done that before. Maybe the next time she comes up with something to you or asks about one of the new tasks, request a 3 or 6-month review with her to discuss your added responsibilities. That way it might come off more as you want to make sure you are doing things accurately and completely and can ask for the increase at that time. If they won't do pay increase, or you don't want that, maybe ask for additional PTO, internet reimbursement or something of that nature that might be related to the new responsibilities. The worst they can say is no and you say "ok" and keep doing what you are doing.
Research much?
You are a moron
Perhaps you need to do some research
homosexuality is not a choice. Do you actually think people would choose such a hard life? You can pray all you want that my child never tells me he/she is gay as I just want them happy and would accept and love them no matter what. Now you on the other hand, gave your answer - you would tell them it is unacceptable and then no harping, no nagging, no bringing it up ove and over again because you probably would disown them.
Do your research.
The tax tables change all the time, but you can make changes in your withholding at any time. But, you need to know what you usually owe to the government at the end of the year. Most people never question this and simply fill out their withholding forms based on who lives in their house. Married with two children, then check that off, and the government settles up with you at the end of the year. Doing that, most people get a refund.

I am married and we have two dependents, but my withholding is filed as single with 0 deductions. We do this because my husband is self-employed and pays quarterly estimates. With his business, we can't always project a full year out what our tax bill will be at the end of the year, so throughout the year, he will adjust what he pays into the estimates, which is much easier to do than for me to go back to my employer and re-file every 3 months. So, I pay the higher percentage of tax from my paycheck so that we never get into a position where we owe a lot of money to Uncle Sam.

Sit down and figure out what you generally owe to the government. Just get out copies of your old returns for the last few years. Unless you had an unusual year along the way, you should have a good idea what you will owe at the end of the year. Then figure out what is being withheld from yours and your husband's paychecks. It's likely that you can increase your deductions and get more money in your paycheck each week and not owe Uncle Sam next April. You can will out that W-4 any way you want. There have been times that I've listed my withholding as married with 10 deductions.

My husband has been sending his clients to this website recently. You might find it helpful in calculating what your withholding should be.

Your boss probably isn't out to rip you off. But she probably just doesn't understand this. Don't rely on her for your information. Find out for yourself.
Do some research.

Agree with this. Regular aerobics and no white foods/sugars. nm

My sister has multiple cats who require differnt foods. sm
She feeds them in separate rooms.  She gives them 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening to eat.  The overweight cat has become beautifully normal-weighted over the past year.  They all do well with this arrangement as cats are only munchers cause we keep the food available all the time.   I actually started restricting food times for my cats as well and they are all doing great.  Hope this helps.
Iams and Science Diet are considered quality pet foods and they

It would do good if you would research
young girls and the idolization that has gone on before you and I came along. I find it just unbelievable a person in this day and age would not already know this. Tsk, tsk
I SO agree - not enough research done for them

and let's not forget that thalidomide......and let's not forget ALL THESE DRUGS TODAY ARE BEING RECALLED - everyday I read about more drugs that have been *out there* - being recalled....cardiac meds, psych meds, et al, ad nauseum.........

These people are not GODs....they haven't all that much of a clue - they are sleeping with the pharmaceutical companies and as a matter of fact I read somewhere that Gov Perry in Texas who made the Gardisil mandatory - actually is funded/supported by the company who MAKES Gardisil.........

think there's an ulterior motive?  YEP....I know there is........

these pharmaceutical companies help with the politicians campaigns, fundraisers, etc....ad nauseum...and put ALL OF US and our kids at risk (for political $$).  IT IS SICKENING.

just my 2 cents.

They could research ways that
regular people could go "green." The list could show the most fuel-efficient cars, how to make and set up rain barrels and how to compost and use organic fertilizers. Then they could offer that article to all their parents' home owners associations to print in newsletters. Some churches might put it on their website or bulletin board. They could probably make and sell rain barrel setups, for that matter, and profits could be donated to charities. You know there is paint that works on plastic now, so they could use the cheapest barrels, which is likely those ugly blue plastic things, and paint them neutral colors that would blend in.

great research!...thanks!...nm

This is why we need MORE ongoing RESEARCH. nm
nm
I agree. I would research this on your own.
The new tax changes are supposed to decrease the amount of withholding and increase your take-home pay.
FYI, just did some research & found that
N95 masks are what the WHO recommends for disease control (although they haven't been recommended in the U.S. for this outbreak yet of course, just Mexico so far).
What was the commercial?
Google the product and lyrics together.
commercial...
Yes, that commercial about the minivan (Toyota, Nissan...can't remember) with the 2 bratty kids sitting in it playing cards and the dad telling them about the treehouse..."does it have leather seats? a DVD player?"  Uhhh, that just really gets under my skin but good...
car commercial
No, it's 2 guys, one is big and fat (the owner) but they both have hair and no beard. At the end he shouts "HUGE" in the most obnoxious way, sends me round the bend.
Commercial

I just posted this exact same question in myspace!

My fav commercial is the commercial with Meatloaf. It's for the AT&T ToGo Phone. The son is asking for one in the garage and he's all "let me sleep on it" so they just sing back and forth together and then the mom walks in carrying some sort of deer leg or something for the freezer?! lol it's great.

commercial
The fast food commercial for BK (I think) where the car in line behind the one at the window starts shoving the couple at the window up so he can order a steak sandwich with wheels screeching and rubber burning. Cracks me up every time.
Commercial
Not exactely sure what they are advertising, I think digital TV, but the husband is complaining to a friend by singing Billy Idol's Rebel Yell. Was so crazy about him in high school!
