Replace the windows in your house.

If you have an old house, you probably have a ton of air escaping through your old windows. The initial cost will be a good chunk of cash, but it will be worth it from years of energy savings to come.

We had new windows put in our house over the summer so
we now need to stain all of them. Ugh. We did not want vinyl inside, because our moulding and doors are all wood. This should be fun. Have to try to match the exisiting woodwork. At least I will be busy this winter.
Also you can just replace the doors
and drawer fronts if the framework of the cabinets are in good shape. Sometimes that gets a little iffy though if cabinets are old and no longer standard sizes. Home Depot and Lowe's sell a pretty good variety
All I did was replace the original post.

copy, paste and replace!!

Because I gained weight quickly and can't afford to replace all my clothes at once (sm)
plus I am trying to lose weight and hope that they will fit again and I won't have to replace them all.
I blew the engine in my truck 7 days after the warranty expired! $7,000 to replace. :( -n/m

lock windows
I made my fiance nail shut all the windows in the house when I moved in with him until we bought new windows because lo and behold none of his windows locked.  While this was probably not smart in case of a fire I would rather be alive to throw something out the window to get out rather than have someone come through the window at night (or day) and do who knows what.
Another warning about windows being down
I had a friend whose husband had the passenger's side window down and the dog was in the front seat.  He was on a leash, but he tried to get some fresh air (small dog as well), he slipped and fell out of the window and was hung by the leash when the husband (while driving) tried to "yank" him back in.  He has never gotten over it.  Another word to the wise - I wonder if this could be just as much of a distraction as talking on a cell phone while driving.  If I had a dog, I think he/she would be in the back seat, and I would literally treat him/her more like a child and belt the animal in to be safe.  Sorry to hear of the loss in your life.  It must have been devastating.
....here. Maybe the windows will be open if it's
s
yea - I need windows, gutters, among
other things but I decided 79.00 wasn't going to get anywhere close to what I needed for that!  I might as well die if I can't have something I want every now and then.
I always lock the doors/windows too, but
then today I saw this.

Scarier stuff every day.

Opinions on bedroom windows...

I am bringing this up from a thread below since I would like to get some opinions. I have room darkening shades that I have stapled right onto the trim but it does not work quite as well as I would have hoped. I have not found a way to block it so that no light comes in at all. I have blankets over the curtain rod and blankets laying across the top because of the light that comes in at the top.

Also he runs a fan to block daytime noise and so it causes the blankets to move and flutter.

Here is an idea I had but would have to figure out how to build it. Window cornice(?) that would cover the entire window. Four 2x4s long enough to box in the window completely and piece of plywood over it, cover with fabric of some kind (curtainy)and install it on the window. I would also like to figure out a way to make it removable so during the days he's not in there I would have natural light. I was even thinking I could insulate the inside of the box.

I am looking for any and all opinions. Even the littlest light in there bothers him.

I think you have a conflict between windows and iTunes...
probably, Windows Media Player is set as the default. I use iTunes, and when I installed it, I set it as my default player, and I only use iTunes for all of my music "work" on the computer. Try putting a regular music CD into your computer. You might get a message with a list of programs to play the CD. Select iTunes, and there should also be a little checkbox that says something like "set as default" or "only use this program for this type of file" Something like that.

Once you get it going, you should simply be able to drag the music you want right over to your iPod on the left side of the screen in iTunes and just drop it in.

When I first got my iPod, I also had problems. It's very frustrating! My husband gave it to me for a birthday gift, and I was so frustrated that I threatened to just throw the thing out (iPod, not husband). Now, however, I think that the iPod is the best thing to happen since man walked on the moon! Just wait until you start subscribing to podcasts!
oh, and open windows to air out home...

gotta change that air sometime........LOL

and when windows are opened, central a/c is off....

gotta be careful with mold/mildew.....which thankfully have never had in 30 years in s. fla....

Failed to mention replace high calorie foods with low calorie....
Stay away from pizza, cinnmon rolls and biscuits.  Traded regular snack food for fruit and veggies, apples, carrot sticks.  The first two weeks are the hardest.
Need help with ideas for remodeling house and decorating. We bought a house

in fair condition about 10 years ago, got into some medical problems, and have just now paid off the mortgage.  Hubby and I agreed we would do nothing to the house for remodeling because we wanted to pay it off first, then the medical bills.  I need to know of some websites/magazines/books to start researching for how to go about this.  These will be major repairs - roof, septic, basement, windows, pretty much everything except wiring.  Where do we start?  Maybe hire a general contractor just to do an evaluation and give us recommendations?  Hubby is a handyman but cant seem to get a handle on where to begin.  We would like to do as much of the work ourselves as possible - labor of love and all that...

Thanks for any and all kind suggestions!

Did anyone load the new Int. Explorer 7 in your windows update yet.
nm
Yes, I guess you have a "genuine" version of Windows
and not an illegal copy. Can't say that for many of us using company equipment, lol.
With those big leaded-glass windows the builders put
in, it's kind of hard to hide when the lights are on inside and you are in the LR. If I'm in my office and DH isn't in the LR either, I just peak out to see who it is. I may have to replace that dumb front door, but the window in the door is the only window in the living room. Stoopid builders.
Still keeping the windows open, even at night
Here in So. Indiana, we are finally past the heat wave and really having some enjoyable weather.. but are still desperate for some rain. Won't even thinking about burning any wood in the stove until December.
45 here; heat on or windows open today? (nm)

Did anyone do the last Windows update and get a message about a DLL address cant be read or
something when you start the computer up.
Be sure to open a coupla windows....chili is a fart-fest...sm

They'll get to jumpin' up and yellin' at the TV/game after feeding and all of a sudden somebody will rip a ripe one! Ya may as well consider making that classic Knorr Swiss spinach dip with lots of shallots/onions as well....  Cat

Change the locks on your doors, nail the windows shut
and fill out a restraining order against him.
I felt it here in NE Indiana for about 10-15 seconds, rattled the windows and shook the couch. nm

We have a house and
who want a dog.  I'm not a cat fan and we can't have an outside dog b/c we live in a development (and I don't want a dog inside).  Rabbits are quiet and cute.  Thanks for the insight!!!
Get a job in house
Again you knew what you were getting into when you signed on.  Also some MT's in our hospitals do have to work holidays.  Some of it is covered by those that chose to "work at home" but again they knew this when they took the job with being able to "work at home."
Well, not in my house!

Do they have a dog house?

I definitely agree that she should take the dog inside, but if she absolutely refuses maybe you could buy her a well-insulated doghouse so at least the animal will have some protection from the cold.  Animals have survived cold temperatures for years, but they need a place that shelters them from the cold, and she needs to provide that for them!!

I feel for you - vegetarian here :)  One of the big reasons I lost respect for my ex-best friend was the way she treated her animals.  She was always buying dogs and cats and then leaving them at the pound or pawning them off on people.  It really made me think less of her, because what kind of person does that! She also won't admit she did anything wrong!  arrrrgh! It drives me crazy when people don't take proper care of their animals.  They are a big responsibility - not just a cute puppy to show off when it's convenient.  I hope your daughter straightens up, but again, if she doesn't I highly recommend purchasing a good doghouse for the poor dog!

i want to eat at your house
I have a cookbook from LA Leche League - Whole Foods for the Whole Family.  many good recipes.  don't know if still available, bought 12 years ago.   Many ethnic recipes on-line to try.
Get him out of the house
This kid is angry at you. He is going behind you undoing everything you do. He wants your attention, even if it is negative.

He needs kids his own age - he may be a number to the day care people, but he'll be a real kid to the other kids and will make friends.

Get him into something you can afford, even if it is just the 2-hr a day program. It will work wonders for him and for you.

Good luck - let us know how it goes for you.

S/L you are carrying a huge load. Home schooling sounds great, but when you're working another job as well, it can break your back. Maybe you and the husband need to reassess how you are doing things. Do the home school classes when the DH is there to help out, or whatever takes the stress out of it for you.
Your cat looks like it ate the house!
Beautiful!
have them to your house? or -
talk to all about it, best policy. bet they understand - haven't they been there? they all might settle for a drive by later for coffee and desert for t-giving...or some other type of compromise.

That's every day at my house :)

the dog house - sm

Girls, has your hubby ever gotten you a "practical" gift that you did not appreciate?  This video will put a smile on your face!  Enjoy the lighthearted fun.

You just described my house

I chuckled reading your post. I have 9 - yes 9 - cats, three of whom are kittens in the range of 7 months old.  I got them all about a week apart and they're each about a month apart in age.  They are refugees from the neighbors really bad decisions.

Nothing in the house is safe any more.  All of my bigger plants are now in hooks on the ceiling - the smaller plants were already there.  It looks silly, but it works.  There is nothing left on any flat surface.  It cracks me up when they get going and chasing each other.   My house is very cat friendly at this point.  I made the choice to put the good furniture in storage for now and I have washable furniture.   There are cat beds everywhere.  My office shelving unit is more cat bed than it is storage and I have 2 beds on the desk beside my computer.

Yes, I am the crazy cat lady.

This is always a hit at my house

Rotel tomatos

Velveeta cheese

taco-seasoned ground beef

Brown ground beef and add taco seasoning (as in making tacos). Melt Velveeta and Rotel in microwave; add meat mixture. I transfer to a crockpot to keep it hot.  Serve with corn chips. This recipe is made with 1 lb ground beef, 1 packet taco seasoning, 1 small can Rotel, and half of a big block of Velveeta. Of course, you can vary it to the amount you need to serve.

House
Love the show, but I missed it...what happened?????
Dr. House would say to see a
However, the suggestion to check out the truck/car for carbon monoxide exhaust is really intriguing. Does he get a headache while the wavy-thing is happening? CO poisoning also causes a killer-headache, I've heard.

I'd also look at what he's having for breakfast and what time he's eating it, in case there's possibly a blood sugar connection. When my blood sugar drops, all sorts of crazy symptoms start happening. Doing a glucometer, I'm always below 80 when that happens.

I really think the beer intake the night before is not relevant at all. Amusing though!

Ya gotta love him though!
I have Karndean throughout my house. It looks just
like wood, I mean REALLY looks like wood, but it's not.  It's not a vinyl either.  You just have to see it.  See the website below.
When we moved into our house..sm

the people who lived here before us had a rabbit that got out of the hutch and they couldn't get it back in, so it lived in our yard.  One nice warm evening I took our house cat out with me while I was outside.  I looked away for a minute and in the blink of an eye, the male rabbit was...um...having nonconsensual relations with my poor, terrified female cat.  I could not believe my eyes. Needless to say, my cat stayed in the house after that.

We just moved into a new house
and the last owners left some of the nails in the wall where they had things hanging and I guess thinking we might want to hang something there as well.

Well, we had this little sign my mom had give me with 2 turtles on it with some saying on it, about family or something. Every time I turned around, my hubby had that thing hanging somewhere. I would take it down and put it away and the next day it would be hanging somewhere else.

I told him to leave the decorating to me, haha! ;)

We just reached our 7th year being married. I hope that in 21 years we have that same relationship. So far, so good.

Cute story, thanks for sharing. :)
Sounds like what we just went through at my house

My 16-year-old daughter was also smoking on and off since last summer.  When her dad actually caught her red-handed, she was grounded indefinitely - no phone or computer and no friends.  She had exercise-induced asthma as a child and I thought I had drilled it into her from little on up how stoopid (censor wouldn't let me spell it right)   smoking would be.  Not to mention that my parents both smoked and mom has severe asthma and dad has the start of emphysema as well as many other health problems.

Anyway, she started again and finally, I went through her purse and found 2 packs of cigarettes, which I took and she was grounded from seeing the boyfriend, which was far worse than the phone, I think.  She threw a fit because her older brother also smoked in high school, but he was already 18, so not much we could really do about it.  She's only 17.  Plus the fact that she just started oral contraceptives and her doctor told her right to her face no smoking.

But, I think we are on the right track at the moment.  Good luck to you because this sure isn't fun.

House Warming
My husband and I are going to be throwing a housewarming party once we get situated and moved in to our condo in a few weeks.

Is it appropriate to register for gifts and pass out the registry cards to those that ask for them, or should we just not register at all?

I'm not gift grubbing, but a lot of people have asked if we're registering, and what they should get us. I don't want to be rude and put the registry card in the invites, but I don't want to not hand them out and no one knows what to get us, if they do decide to bring a gift.
Your house your rules. I would not even
open that door to letting them sleep together at your place because then it will only get worse - trust me - with kids 30, 28, 24 and 17 - I've seen and heard a lot.  Stick by your guns - you will be happier and the kids know where you stand.... you are not a prude and don't think for a second you are!!   Best of luck!!
