That's what my dentist will say, too.

It's just $600 for a crown that my insurance won't cover.  Yikes!

My DH needs to go to the dentist, he refuses. We have been
married 18 years and he hasn't been since we've been married.   I told him I would make an appointment for him and the rest of the family to go and we'd do it all at once and he is adamant that he is NOT going.  I don't know why he doesn't want to go.  I know they will tell him he needs lots of work because he does.  His teeth are rotten, but stained badly and I feel like it is holding him back from advancing in the job market.  I'm going to make appointments tomorrow for the whole family and tell him he's going too.  He'll have to cancel the appointment if he's not going to go and I'm don't plan on telling him the name of the dentist (we are going to a new one since my kids have aged out of the pediatric dentist).
At next cleaning, would use another dentist
xx
It has already been discussed with the dentist and
her orthodontist. The damage comes from over use of any product, including those treatments one can receive in the dental office setting.
absolutely, but the dentist said that it is...
because of too much sugar and not brushing her teeth in the report. He said he stressed the importance of good oral hygeine, et cetera.
The dentist we go to charges

We have insurance.  Have you asked your primary care doctor if there is a clinic or something like that to take care of your husband's dental care?  It's worth a shot.  I had heard something about dentists in training offering cleaning and such for a much cheaper rate.  I think the obstacle would be if they found a cavity or whatever.  Good luck to you!  By the way, we are on the East Coast, so not sure if prices vary by region or not.

Update about dentist from below post sm
My dentist called me last night and apologized.  She is doing to write off the difference.  She was very nice and I told her I'm not one to complain and I'm not a cheat either.  So we worked out stuff and I will continue to go to her.
Excellent suggestion on the dentist
He has a cleaning scheduled in June (the soonest we could get him in without missing school) and at 17 he has never had a cavity. Well, the last time he was there was about 8 months ago so he was 16 then if we want to get technical. LOL! Whew, I finally slept last night. Definitely starting to feel a bit better, but I did make his fav. dinner last night, lasagna, and while he ate just fine, normally there are very few leftovers and not even half was eaten. DD suddenly decided yesterday she no longer likes lasagna so all she ate was salad and bread. I know my radar is up now and I will be picking everything apart. Watching what he eats, if he goes to the bathroom shortly after eating, etc. Even though this has been tough, I put my parents through so much more. I really owe them an apology.
you have got the ole stick it to the dentist syndrome
I paid that bill also and it is awful. Tell the dentist you want a different prize.
Does your dentist grope your chest?

Woodland, CA — The attorney for a Woodland dentist told jurors that his client massaged women's chests as part of a medical treatment.

Defense attorney Michael Rothschild told the six-man, six-woman Yolo County jury that Mark Anderson was treating his female clients for temporomandibular disorder, or TMD. The attorney says the condition affects the muscles of the upper body.

Anderson faces 19 felony charges for skin-to-skin contact and one misdemeanor for touching a patient's breasts over her clothing. The incidents occurred between February 2005 and his arrest in August 2007 and brought complaints from 14 women.

One of the initial 20 felonies was dropped Monday as Rothschild and Deputy District Attorney Robert Gorman began closing arguments.

Closing arguments were to continue Tuesday before the case was to go to the jury.

I would also opt for dentures. But get a really good dentist....sm
Sooner or later you will have to get dentures anyways, it looks like that.
Whatfor AL the pain and torture in between?
And do not accept dentures that do not fit or are uncomfortable. Send them back to the lab until the fit is perfect, this is your right, dentures are expensive and if they do not fit right, you will have all sorts of pain, headaches etc...
I had bridges done and I sent them back thrice until they fit, without extra charge. The fist set looked like a 'rollercoaster'!

It seems that you suffered your whole life from calcium deficiency.

My dentist office charges if you miss - sm
your appt. (or don't call and cancel 24-hours ahead) But they had me sign a paper acknowledging that they told me this and that I agree to the terms. This sounds totally bogus and a scam to boot. Good luck.
Our dentist recommends Crest Whitestrips

My dentist says SOFT toothbrush, never firm!
All these years, everyone thought stiff brushes were better than soft, and the harder and longer you brushed, the better. WRONG! I now have lots of cavity and root issues going on because I have essentially worn off much of the enamel on my teeth between the gumline and the center of the tooth. Have had to have more cavities filled, as well as lots of restorative work. Now I use a soft baby's toothbrush!
My dentist also recommend Crest strips
She said she could do the whitening but it would yield no better result than an OTC product. Check the website too, they may have coupons available that you can print or sign up to receive by mail. I'm finding a lot of brand name product websites do this now.
I had ZOOM in my dentist's office and am very pleased.
I tried Crest White Strips but they didn't do anything. Zoom was pricey, but my teeth were really yellow. They are much, MUCH nicer. I maintain with a 45-minute bleach at home twice a week. Right after I had my teeth whitened, I received a lot of compliments, but people couldn't quite figure out what was different. I heard a lot of "Did you get your hair cut?" and "Did you get new glasses?" LOL.
Without anesthesia, and done by a dentist with severe halitosis. :)
:)
and even if you can't afford it, still better!!!..nm

His *last* two teeth?
Meaning that was all he had left? I just can't believe what I'm reading here. lol
When you can afford it.

dog teeth
Like the posters below, I've never had my dogs' teeth brushed or cleaned. They eat dry dog foot and lots of generic milk bones and real bones (beef soup bones).

They are both over 11 and when I took them to a new vet recently, she didn't believe me when I told her their ages because their teeth were in such good shape. I should be so lucky with my own teeth LOL!
Dog's teeth
My chow/mix lived to be 16 1/2, had only one tooth pulled, no broken teeth, had her teeth cleaned once or twice in her lifetime and I never brushed her teeth.  Vets were all amazed at her age and her state of health.  The week before she passed away, at her check-up the vet said that her teeth were in good condition and some of the best he had ever seen for a dog over the age of 10 much less her age.   I fed her a good dry dog food, walked her a lot, loved her more and never gave her any kinds of meat bones to chew on.   She did have rawhide, pigs ears and those stinky calf hoofs.   I am not saying it is a bad idea to brush them but if it is a fight, why go through it.  For so many years we did not do it for our pets and they lived long years.   Feed him/her a good dry crunchy food and like suggested above get them some of the dental bones above.  Keep them away from the steak/pork or chicken bones though.  Have worked for a vet and too many surgeries for bone splinters in the stomach/bowel lining perforating it.   Good luck
You CAN'T afford it
If you are charging things and then paying only the minimum payment, you CAN'T afford it. You are paying interest charges and that's money down the toilet. You don't say how much you owe, but you owe too much if you are carrying over charges from month to month. You are deluding yourself if you think you can afford to spend.
What does afford mean?
When you can afford something, you have the money to buy it. You don't have the money to buy it or you wouldn't be racking up credit card debt. You can only afford it if you can totally pay off your credit card every month. You seem to be living in la-la land financially, based on your posts here. This would be a really good time to get a financial education before you find yourself in big trouble.
It's true. My kids' dentist told me this yeas ago. sm
If the enamel is brushed away, it exposes the tooth first and they the root is invaded by the decay.

Gums should also be brushed as well as the tongue.
Knew a dentist Candy Treat - for real

A dentist who does breast exams should lose his licence. Besides...
I categorily refuse manual breast exams. If I want to check fir cancer, I go for a mommogram.
Don't do it if you are meticulous about your teeth.
I went to a dental clinic like that years ago. I had to replace the cap work shortly after and they did some other procedures not so well, a root canal that didn't take or was incomplete, etc. The next dentist I saw said it was some of the worst work he had ever seen and he was surprised with the quality of the materials (very cheap) they were using. So it only wound up costing me more in the long run. Just thought I'd mention.
Please, nowadays many can't *afford* them
And not talking about people on welfare here. But they all still have them, sometimes many! Selfish, IMO. Today you better be making at least 100,000 a year or at least a very high credit card limit if you want a truly happy fulfilled child who can keep up with the Joneses and have everything everyone else has these days or at least a very high credit limit. ;)
I would LOVE to be able to afford a
I'd think I had died and gone to heaven! :)

I have preteen children at home and I would NEVER have been able to do this with infants or toddlers. I try to schedule my work when my kids are at school or asleep and, on the rare occasion they are home when I am working, I have very little disruption from them. They understand mom is working.

I have recently started doing IC and although I don't have to adhere to an actual "schedule", I do what is needed in order to be the best MT I can be AND I also do what is needed in order to be the best mother/wife I can be.

Bottom line for me is professional or not, inhouse or home, if my family doesn't come first, then I feel my priorities would be greatly misdirected. :)

I do understand your point about children and disruption though. Like I said, if my children were infants/toddlers, there is no way I could do MT work in even a semi-professional (is that possible? semi-professional??? lol) way at home, unless I had someone here to take care of them while I was working.
I never brush my dog's teeth
I have an 8-year-old German Shepherd, and I have never brushed her teeth, and I have had her since she was a little puppy. She was at the vets a few weeks ago for an update on her shots and an exam, and the vet said that her teeth were perfectly fine and that there was really no need to brush them. I give her tennis balls to chew on because she does not like bones, but that is about it. The vet said that the tennis balls should do a good enough job cleaning them.

Is there a baking soda toothpaste out there that might work? Is baking soda mild on your teeth?

My dad's false teeth!
OK, I admit it's weird. My dad had false teeth made for him courtesy of the Veteran's Administration. (Had all of his teeth pulled courtesy of the Army in WWII.) But dad would never wear his teeth. He hated them, and being toothless never seemed to slow him down. It was a real sight to see him eat corn on the cob, but he did it! His government issue teeth were always in our medicine cabinet in the bathroom, and he changed the water everyday and dropped in a fresh Efferdent tab. I only remember him wearing his teeth two days, for my h.s. graduation and on my 21st birthday.
My dad was a quirky guy, but he was tremendously generous and a wonderful father. He died shortly after my 21st birthday. I have a sentimental attachment to his false teeth, and I should probably see a psychiatrist about that, but for now, I keep his false teeth in their container in my medicine cabinet, and they've been there for 24 years. (OK. Go ahead and collectively say, "Ewwwwwww.")
well, i dont have any teeth there. sorry to say.
i have all fake bridges and partials on the top of my mouth.  i only have 1 jaw tooth left on the top that is my tooth, and its fine.  i have had this knot for probably 6 or 8 years.  but its usually about pea-sized.  everytime i am diagnosed with a sinus infection it flares, but never this bad.
Whatever you do, DON'T get them in right after the teeth are pulled

Wait at least a year to get fitted. I was a receptionist and had to either quit my job or get my dentures immediately. Mine fit great at first and was told never to take them out (I didn't) ...then one day when answering the phone at work, my bottoms fell out. Thank heavens no one was in the waiting room. How embarrassing!

I don't think I was fitted correctly as they hurt like heck where the bottom jaw met the top of the mouth. I cannot wear the tops now either. They are too loose. I had them religned after a year but it didn't help. Always had trouble eating and drinking anything. Gagged and choked all the time.

I can't eat in restaurants because I at least wear my tops when going somewhere so I don't scare anyone, but can't eat with them.

As for your question, it cost me $700, 12 years ago and another $300 to get then relined. What a waste of $$

Think I'll change my name to Gums.

Anybody use teeth whiteners ? ...sm

If so which do you prefer the toothpaste or the whitening strips?.  I would like to try one of these products but unsure if one is better than the other.

Thanks

I couldn't afford the gas - nm

I think I would tell here you just could not afford it, and state what
you can do, i.e., the week after. He is not obligated to go, especially if it is a $2000 trip with all things considered. If she cannot accept that, that is her problem. Be gracious, but just tell here there is no way to afford the trip. Or, why not just move your trip up a week, go for the entire week, and if there are not enough tickets for everyone, then your DH can go to the ceremony and the rest of you meet them afterwards.
Bath and teeth

Maybe it's the toothpaste.  Some of it tastes yucky to a kid or the mint may be too strong or brushing could be irritating his gums.  Let him pick a child's toothpaste and soft toothbrush and see if that helps.  As for baths,  I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to the tub.  What mom didn't know was that my older sister kept sneaking in and pulling the plug, telling me I was going to go down the drain. She said if I told mom she would call the adoption agency and tell them to take me back (I wasn't adopted, but at age 4 I didn't know that).  Maybe he saw something on TV that scared him.   Some shows are pretty graphic (news too). I recall one show where a lady was brushing her teeth and blood started pouring from the faucet. Try letting him sit in a dry tub with a bucket of water for a sponge bath.  Sit down and talk with the kid (not talk to) and assure him/her that if there is something going on you can help.

Teeth sensitivity
My sister used something recommended by her dentist, so I assume it was not damaging. However, this was last winter and it made her teeth so sensitive to cold she had to be sure to keep her mouth closed as she couldn't bear the cold air on her teeth! Just something to be aware of.

Also about the teeth being sore...
Our orthodontists both told us that if OTC meds do not help your pain, they are too tight and you should call for a 2nd adjustment. Your teeth should not be so sore that you can't eat a regular diet. Who knows, yours might have a different policy or idea, but don't suffer through the pain without asking. I did and they finally told me that I shouldn't be and they don't know that unless the patient tells them.
My point exactly. He can afford it
and he should afford it. All the CEOs of all of these companies that are begging for handouts...this is what they should have to do.

All these CEOs for these companies that aren't doing good...I think they should jump on the bandwagon here. They cut our pay or pay us next to nothing, because they say the companies are not doing well...but they are not taking paycuts or cutting bonuses for upper management.
I would give them what you can afford
and if they don't like it, it's their problem. It's the thought that counts. A teenager should enjoy a gift certificate to the movies or to his/her favorite clothing store. As for the adults, my husband and I have been giving our parents gift cards to their local grocery store. Everyone needs to eat. I'm glad we don't run into these problems with our families. Everyone is happy to get something no matter how inexpensive. Try not to stress too much about it.
Yes about the wisdom teeth
If I didn't have them cut out they would have messed up all the work the braces did.
If anyone can really afford 14 kids, ok but
a single parent, living with her parents, breeding 14 kids and I would almost bet we are the ones really taking care of the kids, not her. I remember some time ago when my housekeeper remarked to me about her cousin having a brood, about 7 and I asked what kind of work did the mother do and when told I said, she cannot possibly take care of all those on that salary. I was told not only did she receive welfare but also section 8 for the house and my housekeeper wanted to strongly argue that this woman "takes care of her own." You don’t do that when you don’t pay for your own. I don’t know but I never got any money for raising my own kids and I resent strongly taking care of others. I think the government should do some kind of reduction on this family.
Your lower teeth
in the front ... have your gums eroded in back of the teeth as well? Mine look fairly normal in front of the teeth, but behind them (especially bottom front teeth), I can see the gums are quite receded. I have one of those little dental mirrors. I am wondering why they would be worse in the back, as I think I brush the same way there.
Taken better care of my teeth nm
nm
If you buy from a catelogue, then you can afford
QVC or HSN either one. I have bought from Catherine's but they are a little higher. You can get clothing all day long reasonable from the channels and no one has to complain about wearing mumus or the like. I buy almost exclusively and even have an account with HSN but like QVC better, I think.
Horrible Teeth
What are your opinions?  If you had terrible teeth, that kind that decay from the inside out, you've had 14 root canals, several of which broke off after they were crowned (to the tune of about $1200 per tooth), you have three more teeth that need to be extracted, 2 more that need root canals and extensive bridge work must then be completed, your mouth hurts all the time, there is an abscess forming over one of the old root canals that broke, you have a heart valve condition which means you must always premedicate before dental work and an infection could cause pericarditis .... would you have the above work done or just say, to hell with it, I'm getting dentures.  BTW, I'm 51 and this all started when I was 5.
I can only afford a Ford! LOL! (Afford a Ford?)
