What?? You could end up the same way

A spendthrift spouse can cause you to be poor, or a spouse with a long, lingering illness.  Everybody gets old, no matter what.  A philandering/hobby obsessed spouse can result in plenty of time alone.  One can still end up in a nursing home, even people with perfect spouses that suddenly die from a brain aneurysm or a car wreck.  Being married doesn't preclude any of the things you're talking about.
