Hi elonmt. Yes, past the Rockaway Mall
going west towards PA. Live off of Route 80. My power went out at 12:30 as well as cable. Power came back on at 3 a.m. this morning, 29th and cable back on at 10 this morning. Man o Man. It has been crazy here. We had about 5 inches. Trees were falling, power lines down, roads closed. If felt like a January blizzard when I was out shoveling. Yes, I had to do it, but it was very heavy. I could not even have a cup of hot chocolate when I was done. We had to go out to eat also, but I was not complaining. Sleep with sweatshirt on with a hood and many, many blankets. Glad it is over. Can't wait until we get into winter. LOL

So far we are running as normal. My two high school kids start at 7:45, get out at 2:38. My 7 year old gets picked up at 8:20 to be taken to the elementary school. My youngest isn't in school yet so no worries with him. Our school district has 2 elementary schools - one for K-3, the other for 4-6. The elementary kids do all ride the same bus (K-6) with the middle school being dropped off before the younger elementary kids. Our vacation schedule is usually about 10-11 days off over Christmas with Thursday through Monday off for Easter break, although this year they only had Friday through Monday off because of needing to make up a snow day. As far as summer, it's kind of funny this year. My oldest son graduates high school May 30 which is a Saturday and my 7 year old has to go to school the following Monday because the elementary kids had a snow day over the winter that the high school kids didn't. I would definitely go to the meeting and voice your concerns. I would be concerned as well with all the kids riding together. The older kids have a big influence on the younger kids and not always a good one. Hope this all works out for you.
First snowfall of the season here in Northern NJ. Anyone else?
Woke up this morning to howling wind and snow covered grass and cars.  Now big wet flakes coming down.  I am not ready for this yet.

So if due to the COST of water, (especially when heated by expensive gas!), I already treat it like gold, and use as little of it as possible, I wonder what now? Bathe only once every OTHER week? Let all the plants die, and become kindling for the next wildfire here in the hills? Use the gray water from the washing machine to wash my dishes? (Oh wait - I already do that).

So yea, I feel the same way about the frugality thing. Everyone's so scared of a depression - yet we MT's have been living in one for at least the past 10 years. I've cut back so far that there's not much left to give up, other than eating at ALL, sleeping in an apartment building instead of my car, or finding a way to generate my own power source and get off the grid.

Yea, my little black heart just BLEEDS NOTHING BUT STONES for all those rich CEOs whining about having to give back their million-dollar bonuses.
You have fresh peas, too, in that cool northern weather of yours? :) nm

Well, it's gotten cold enough to burn the fireplace. I'm in northern AZ. How bout you?

Mall

Mall of America
Any one been to Mall of America in Minnesota, my DH wants to go and not sure what to expect?
Mall of America
Yep, I've been there more times than I'd like to admit. My teenage daughter absolutely loves it! Very big, lots of walking, but it's 4 levels and each "corner" is anchored by a department store. Has Camp Snoopy, an amusement park, in the middle and lots of food courts scattered throughout. Also has restaurants and movie theater on the fourth floor. Any other questions?
Mall of America
Are you from Minnesota? I'm originally from Rochester, but have lived away (all over the country) for the past 27 years. ButI'm moving back this summer. Watch out Mall of America!
Mall ofAmerica
I tried to talk my daughter into the U of Minn., but she's decided to go to Creighton here in Omaha instead so I guess it's Go Jays! Where do you live now?
Mall of America
There's a new Ikea store right across from the mall. By the way, if you get there early enough, you can find parking in one of the garages which are right across the street and connected by sky-ways (free parking). They also have lockers you can rent in case your purchases get too heavy to carry! Have fun and happy shopping!
Yesterday I was at the mall and a

guy was walking along talking to a young girl. He rounded the corner and I was coming toward them. He stopped his conversation with her and said loudly to me,

You're pretty . . then went back to his conversation with her!  LOL! She did not seem upset at all.  Her brother? a friend?

Question. . jerk or just a darn nice guy?  LOL

DH and I were just told to leave mall. SM

It isn't really a mall. Just new shopping area that opened up nearby. Some stores are opened, some are not. It was 9:30 and we were coming out of the Lohmans, when security guard approached us. We thought he was just being friendly, but he told us to leave!  It isn't an indoor mall, it's an outdoor mall, on a public street.

Maybe because of our age? I'm 60 and he is 56. LOL! We must have looked like ruffians or something. You know how us middle-aged folks like to hang out and cause trouble.

Held the door for a gal at the mall some weeks ago and

she just proceeded to walk through it and past me without a thank you. I muttered QUIETLY under my breath . . your're welcome.

We walked out into the parking lot and she turned around and said so nicely .

I am so sorry. That was rude of me. I should have thanked you.  I immediately said, oh, that's okay. . no problem.  She said again, No, I really am sorry. I don't blame you for being offended.

Wow! be careful what ya say!

Why is it when we WANT to be heard we aren't?   lol

Country. Mall or online shopping?

Yesterday at the mall I was talking with a friend SM

I met who works there. A group of young girls about high school age came up to me and asked if I would take a picture of them together. I noticed she had such a beautiful accent. I was about to take the picture and she told me to be sure to get the American flag that hangs from the ceiling in the picture as well. They were thrilled to be in America. We asked them where they were from and they said they were from Russia. They were beautiful, polite girls who were smiling from ear to ear.  It was a nice moment and I wanted to share it with you.

Yesterday on my break at our local mall when I
was leaving and at the door two young men about mid 20s approached me and asked directions to our county hospital and nursing home.  Then they told me they had to walk because of no transportation, and that they just walked across town from a motel and were tired.  After I gave the directions again one of them asked if I drive.  He saw me just prior to that getting my car keys out.  I told him yes.  He asked if I would drive them to their destination.  I told them I had to be back to work very soon, which I did.  They could have been on the level, and I could have been on the new last night had I allowed both of them in my car.  I felt bad when I left, thinking that I could have helped someone.  What would you have done?  Some years ago one night I was forced into my car by a male who followed me out to my car.  That will stick with me forever.  I have never been the same.  Please reply.  Right now I am thinking of the verse in the Bible that says something like Be aware that you may be in the presence of an angel.  Did I let these angels down?  Please help.
People who let their children wander in the store or mall-
one with no one around" and I dont mean that in a perverted way. Just scares me to death that these parents dont pay attention to these small children. I once sat on a bench at the mall and watched a mother walk 20 feet or so in front of a toddler, for about the distance of 3 or 4 store, not once looking back. I was disturbed by that a little. Granted, I live in what one would consider a small town, but there are creeps here too Im sure.
I'd recommend going to a local mall on a weekend and watch....sm
to see how teenage boys are currently dressing, how their hair looks, etc. Once you get ideas of what is currently "hip" then you can search for bargains for the clothes. You can dress your son without it costing a fortune by looking for bargains, searching eBay, going to thrift stores, etc.

Have fun with this!
The JCP in our local mall opens at 4 a.m. on Friday! Craziness!!! nm

Can i add my 2 cents worth? In a mall I saw this young woman (sm)
wearing a black plastic garbage bag!  She had on black tights, a black turtleneck and the garbage bag with a hole cut out for her head and arms.  She had it cinched up around her waist with a really wide black belt!!
Donations for victims of Omaha mall shootings

Hi all you fellow MTs,

I live in the Omaha area where the recent mall shootings took place. It has been a devastating incident, as you might imagine. One of my friends went to the mall that day and instead of going to Von Maur first as she normally would, she decided to start her shopping at a different store. She would have been right in the area of the shooting.

Most of those killed or wounded were Von Maur employees. I work in a trauma center and we still have one of the victims there.

If anyone would like to make a donation to the victims' fund, the best way would be to go to the wowt.com web site and click on "how to help" on the left-hand side of the home page.

Thanks to all. Keep the families in your prayers, please.

I never said anything about what I have done in my past
heavens, I had premarital sex, had several abortions, drank until in a drunken state, smoked like a house of fire, cursed, had lots of sexual partners in the past, rode a motorcycle without a helmet, ate fast food, indulged in Burger Kings especially, drove way over the speed limits, cheated on my first husband but...... that was in my past. I never said I was angel, never. I changed as I aged and hopefully gained some wisdom over the years. I obey most of the laws now although living in Atlanta I still speed. All the above things of the past. I am saying and will continue to say, rules are made by the people voted into office. If you don't like them, vote and change things. Oh, something else, after marrying this last husband I even stopped drinking Cokes. I did it because I wanted to, not because I had to. And answer to another post, they have stopped selling Cokes in a lot of the schools because the kids are becoming so obese and that is just another way for them to indulge in meaningless calories. All the things listed in my previous post stand as I told them. And by the way, chickee dee, never mentioned I did unsafe or unhealthy, just came to my senses and stopped a lot of stuff.
I have something in my past
That I haven't told my husband and I don't plan on it. No one but me and one other person knows about it and the other person is long gone. It was something medical, and no it wasn't an unwanted pregnancy or anything like that. There's no need for him to know since I didn't know my husband back then and it doesn't have any bearing on anything in our relationship now.
I think in the past...
it used to be that way, but not anymore.  So many boys now are not circumcised, it's quite normal.  As far as I know, it is not recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, so it is not a routine procedure in most hospitals and parents need to specifically ask for it.  I have heard that some hospitals do not even perform it in-house.  Also, are insurance companies even paying for this procedure anymore?  I think many do not cover it.
What I have experienced in that past -
I agree with the other poster. That money is really *good faith money.* The buyer puts that money up in order to show you they want the house and for you to hold it for them until closing. You will not see any money of any kind until closing. If the deal falls through you can often collect that money or a portion of it. You really need to keep in close contact with your real estate agent. After all, they are getting paid mighty well to sell your home! :-)
I don't know how women in the past did that - sm
I mean for me it hurt like the dickens (unfortunately did "it" twice that fateful evening) and I couldn't walk without incredible pain for days afterwards. Who would want to deal with that on their honeymoon? Certain would kill the urge.... Now maybe that is not the norm, but I swear childbirth was easier.
Past retirement age.

She's graduated past the age
where you should feel an obligation of any kind.

You are her godparent, so she is supposed to give you a gift, right? Is she?
Sharing your past

I have an 18 yo son and a 16 yo daughter and this subject comes up occasionally.  So far we haven't had to worry about their drinking or drugging, and it may have something to do with how both our pasts have been part of our teachings, age-appropriate, of course.  We both come from alcoholic families though were blessed never to become alcoholic ourselves, but we've shared some of our expeirences from the standpoint of how they made our lives more complicated.  We strive for simplicity in our family, and they can see how immoral behavior almost always makes for a more complicated life.  At 18 and 16 they both just tasted wine for the first time (other than church) this Christmas and none of their friends drink, or even smoke.  They know their grandmother died of emphysema.

They also know that my life changed drastically when their oldest brother was born 37 years ago when I was 18, and also that both their father and I have struggled hard all our lives because of not going to college.  For every "but you came out okay" there's the answer that it could have been so much easier to get here had we made different choices, and making the right choices is what it's all about, isn't it?

No...but just can't get past this one - still ROFL!

Mine is Little Critters Omega-3 Gummy Fish. Cute concept but the berry, lemon and strawberry flavoried gummies somehow manage to taste like fruity flavored fish Shocked When I got them, my kids gagged with the first one and wouldn't even touch the second one for the recommended 2 a day. So guess who is choking down 2 of those suckers every day now?

We just got WII fit this past week
I'm waiting for school to start so I can do it with no one home!!! Glad to hear there is a password so you can hide your weight and BMI. ;)

We bought this WII for my son last Christmas and I can honestly say it was money well spent. They have a blast with it and they aren't constantly sitting. We don't have the Guitar Hero but maybe that will be next on the list.
A lot of us have things in our past........ sm
that we are not proud of, and while we do not deliberately try to hide them, sometimes it is just easier not to talk about them as it is painful and very often misunderstood by those around us, even our spouses.

It is not my business what this "secret" is that your husband has, but it sounds as if it is something that he has learned a lesson from and probably will not end up repeating in the future.

My own personal opinion is that if this is not something that is threatening your marriage or your children right now, I would let the past stay in the past. In other words, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.
WOW! I will try this but sure hope I can get past
nm
If I could change the past
I would either change my parents to parents who wanted me and loved me like I do my children.  Or I would have my mother put me up for adoption like she did one of my sisters....she was the lucky one.  I envy her.  A mother who does not love you will affect your whole life, but it made me want to be a loving mother.
Thanks everyone. I have had mono in the past so (sm)
that is why they did not think that is the problem now. I didn't try the pepper yet...kind of chicken I think. But I will try that and if I am not better in the next day or two I will go and ask about my thyroid. I have been borderline hypothyroid for a long time so it wouldn't be a big surprise.

Thanks again
Where were you the past 8 years? LOL. nm

Anyone out there with a gothic kid present or in the past???sm

If your child was previously gothic, how long did it take for them to grow out of this phase?  I'm tired of seeing our 15-year-old wear black all of the time.  She refuses to wear anything else, and the black eyeshadow looks ridiculous.   I told her the other day that if she isn't going to wear her other makeup that she wanted over the summer then give it to me as I'd give it to a kid that would wear it - especially since there is some that hasn't been opened yet.   She isn't happy that we won't let her get those weird body piercings or tattoos... but oh well, we've told her that until she is on her own she has to live by our rules.  Overall she's a good kid and doesn't socialize outside of school so at least we're not dealing with the "what's my kid doing with their friends at night" thing!
