Would anyone use a home meal service?

Posted By: Ideas wanted....sm on 2007-12-23

I having been tossing around the idea of starting my own home meal service.  Would any of you ladies use a service like this and, if so, would you want hot meals delivered and ready to eat or premade meals that you popped in the oven yourself?  Would you use this service regularly or every once in a while?  Before I started in transcription, I worked as a chef for 12 years and up until the past 5 years I did do catering.  Thanks for any input.

Meal suggestions
I love to cook, but there are times when cooking just does not fit into my schedule. On those occasions, I opt for the Lean Cuisine (LC) frozen meals #1, followed by the WW variety. I personally find LC to have tastier meals, but there are some good WW frozen meals. Also, there are options for eating out, you just have to be selective in restaurant choices. When joining WW you can get a restaurant guide which is great in helping you with those selections. This is another thing I enjoy about WW. First, and foremost, you are not restricted to having to buy a program's foodline which can be very expensive, such as Nutrisystem, Jenny Craig, etc. You can eat the same foods the rest of your family eats. If hubby is the cook of the family, when he is around you could have him cook extras of WW sensible meals and put them away, either in the fridge for immediate use, or in the freezer for future use. I have done that in the past with preparing on the weekends and having leftovers ready for quickie meals during the week. Don't forget with summer upon us that the grill is a wonderful place to enjoy your food and still remain WW-friendly. I hope these suggestions will help.
Meal Question....
would eating low fat grilled cheese with turkey bacon, lettuce, and tomato with a small serving of tomato soup be good or bad if you watching your waistline?
Do you make a meal like that?
Sounds like something I would like, oh anything with shallots, tomatoes, onions, garlic, bring it on.
Share a meal when you’re out to eat
Have you seen the portions that chain restaurants are serving up lately? There’s no secret why our society is so overweight. You’ll save your heart and your wallet by sharing a meal with your significant other. If you’re one of those people that feels bad doing it, make yourself feel better by tipping 25% to the server.
Does your hubby know you use him as a meal ticket?
Or is he just arm-candy to you? And, yes, I've no doubt once he sees through your thinly-veiled greed, he'll be off and running with the first pretty young thing that doesn't expect him to hand her everything on a silver platter.

I didn't even realize women like you still existed in the real world.

But then...you're not actually living in the real world, are you?

BTW, my hubby is a good deal younger than I am; however, he knows he's here because I love him, NOT for what he can HAND me.

You're so insipid, yet somehow so comical. Interesting combination!

Cook a meal and dine on leftovers
the rest of the week, or freeze what you don't eat. Then you have a ready meal that just needs thawed out.
Sounds like you could easily turn this into a meal
by tossing in some chicken breasts. My MIL bakes pork chops in cream of mushroom soup, bet you could use that too for something a little different.
Did it ever cross your mind that HE'S using YOU as a meal ticket?
So now it's you that has more money than the younger hubby. Hmmmm...food for thought, but perhaps I was off base earlier and it is, in fact, YOU that is the meal ticket in that power-couple relationship of yours.

Better stick with that guy for as long as he'll tolerate you. Today's younger guys like their women independent and enjoy EQUAL relationships.

If I were you, I'd peek into his cell phone on occasion. Ya know, just check the incoming and outgoing call lists. He might already be shopping around for a less expensive model, something that requires less upkeep and doesn't consider community property 'hers'.
Fried rice is another good, cheap meal (sm)
I use a rice cooker a lot since I can cook w/o babysitting it. Make extra rice and put it in a ziplock bag and refrigerate. Next day you can take the leftover rice and bits of meat and veggies left over from other meals and an egg or two, and make fried rice. If you're new at it, there are some inexpensive fried rice spice mix packets that give you the flavor with some instructions. But once you've done it a few times, you can wing it with some asian spices and just use up the leftovers you have.

Anyone move from a single family home to mobile home? sm

I own and live in a house in a midwest city in a bad neighborhood (wasn't that bad 11 years ago).  I spent the day waiting for the plumber to come and jackhammer the foundation (slab house, no basement) to find a leaky pipe that is flooding my DD's bedroom. Last week, it was the electrician with quotes for costly repairs.

In the meantime, I've really been thinking about selling out and moving into a mobile home.  Has anyone done this before?  Is a mobile home in a decent park less of a hassle than a regular house?  I'm so tired of cutting the grass and spending $$ to fix things and tired of old flooring and cabinets, etc., that are just too costly to replace.  I'm single with no man to do these things for me and I can't afford a mortgage on a newer house in a good neighborhood.  Some of the pictures I've seen of the mobile homes look really nice and modern on the inside.

Any advice and comments appreciated.  Thanks!

Well I figure I can make my own hours & be home when the kids are home (sm)
I worked PT in an office for a while but spent most of my money on childcare in the summer. Full-time in an office was just a nightmare and I felt like I missed a whole year of my children's lives. I want to be in control of my schedule so that's why I'm looking into the cleaning thing. Never thought I would want to do that but live and learn! Some of the most intelligent people alive work as carpenters and similar things because they have learned what's really important in life. Whew....off my soapbox now :-) Good luck to you!
thank YOU for your service!
No matter what branch, age, sex, etc., the entire military has my utmost respect.  I only hope they know how many of us get a lump in our throats whenever we thank them on the street OR watching something as moving as this.  I know I'll never forget!
met in the service
Met in the service overseas. Dated a short while then went to Denmark to get married. Lots of soldiers were getting married this way. In Denmark there were 8 other military couples with us getting married. DH and I knew each other not very long. It's been 32 years this year.
I do not tip if it is self-service.

You mean own your own MT service?
If so, yes, there is a book. My friend has it. I will have to get the name of it from her.
They can refuse service to anyone at will.
Even Wal-Mart can throw you out for any reason they want.

I'm glad he did it. I went to Jeff Ruby's Louisville website and sent him a support e-mail!

Thank goodness business owners can still decide WHO they want to serve and do business with!!!!

My vet has a service that provided sm
the transportation to the cremation facility, which is about 2 hours away and the remains were mailed back to the office and I picked up the pretty little tin when my 14-year-old Cocker died 2 years ago. She is now in my curio cabinet with her picture so I don't forget her. She had to be put down as well, very, very severe stroke and was not coming out of the seizure she has having. I didn't have any problem making the decision. I couldn't stand watching her suffer so. It cost about 200.00 to have her cremated but I didn't want to bury her in my yard. Too many wild critters running around that like to dig.
We met in the service in Germany
I was stationed in Germany and about a year later he was assigned to my unit. He was very very handsome and very mysterious. We didn't date (or even really speak much of maybe 5 words to each other) until end of June of 82 and July 15 we took a train to Denmark and got married. Shocked the you know what out of our families. This July is our 26th Anniversary.
Believe it or not a Dating Service
I was sick of meeting losers so I decided to take the chance. We were engaged after three months and married nine months later and will be married for 17 years in September. The first time he introduced me to his friends a week or so later, they told him we were going to get married.

Dating Service
I was tired of not being able to meet anyone. I actually got matched with a lot of great guys, but no one struck me as "the one" until I met my now husband. We talked for about 5 hours at the restaurant our first date and saw each other every day after that. We were engaged after a month and got married a year later. Now almost 18 years late we have to great daughters 15 and 5.
Met through a dating service
I was sick of not being able to find anyone decent. I say it was fate, because he said he hated answering machines so when he called me the first time, and I wasn't home, he could have said forget it, but he decided to give me one more call and I was home that time. If he gave up the first time I never would have met him. We dated for one month, got engaged and married a year later. It will be 18 years this September.
How about diaper service?

Depending on how much you want to spend, you can buy as much time as you want.  My sister got 6 months worth as a shower gift and absolutely loved it!  The company initially set her up with a santized odor-less container to put the soiled one in and more than enough to last for a week, then they pick up the dirty ones and leave clean ones once a week.  It saves money for the new parents and is good for the environment too, no diapers in landfills.

wherever customer service is deplorable!...nm

I know 1 thing about the telephone service
my aunt and I both have supposedly the lowest priced land phone through Bellsouth or now bought out by AT&The. I have to have a cell phone because if not then I cannot get my DSL through them although I have cell phone. She lives in a state adjoining mine and her price for cell phone (we are not talking about long distance now) is a ridiculous say $12 a month and yet mine runs a little over $40 a month. I wish someone from the company could explain this 1 to me.
Don't bother with a cleaning service...
Save your money. We had a cleaning service twice a month for a year, and the day they cleaned the house, it looked wonderful, but the day after...yikes! Like it never happened. We have 3 kids and 2 dogs, and it's honestly like shoveling in a snow storm! So my husband and I took the job back and do our own cleaning. We teach the kids to clean their rooms, otherwise it won't get vacuumed. I clean the 3 bathrooms on my day off, which really doesn't take too much time if I spot clean in between. We just keep after the kids to pick up after themselves. I always have a to do list in my head for myself every weekend and feel good when I actually get them done! I know that's strange, but I do:-) Just take one day at a time, think about what you really want taken care of, and it'll get done. Don't sweat it, but I wouldn't throw money at a service to do it. Your husband has to work as a team with you. If he likes organization so much, then he can handle that part of the duties. I never grocery shop or really cook...so my husband took that over from the beginning. We chose the things we like to do and then get them done. Who cares who does them? Good luck!
I have a cleaning service and I love it

She comes in every two weeks. Of course, most of the time it is just my husband and me, with my son home from college on holidays and vacations. And we are pretty much neatniks - I just can't do the "heavy" cleaning (bathroom, floors, etc.) because of my back, and I don't want my husband spending his weekends cleaning.

Before you bring anyone in, though, it would be a good idea to sit down with everyone and discuss how you are going to handle things in between maid visits. The kids need to learn to carry their dirty dishes to the sink (and put a little water on them to soak off any food residue - my pet peeve!). You need to make sure that everyone has their own laundry hamper and make it a rule that dirty clothes must go in there immediately - no throwing them on the floor until "later." Make sure that the kids have adequate storage for their toys and clothes, with a place for everything.

And everybody needs to follow the "one-in-one-out" rule - if you buy something new, whether it's clothes, toys, or whatever, then something comparable has to go in the "donate" bin (or trash, depending on condition) and be taken out of the house.

If your family can learn to follow these rules and you have someone come in once a week or every two weeks for the heavy cleaning, I can guarantee things will run a lot more smoothly.

Good luck!

Does anyone use Suddenlink phone service? sm
I am just curious if anybody has any thoughts about this.  TIA
SuddenLink phone service

Hey Becky,

I am considering it as my bill would be so much cheaper not to mention convenient/paying all one bill for cable/phone and  internet.  Where are you located?  Alexandria Louisiana

Anyone ever tried Vonage the phone service? sm
I was looking into trying Vonage for a phone service.  After reading about it, it seems like it would work fine.  But I am still concerned about all of the connections and processes it has to go through just to get a phone call.  I currently have cable modem so that would be okay.  I was just wondering if it works as well as they say it does, what are the "hidden" startup costs, and please tell me everything you can.  I hate anything with contracts and this is just something I don't really know anything about.  Thanks!
I asked for community service when he took off
A month ago he took off and was wandering around and I called him in as a runaway. I asked for community service then, which they refused to give him, and I was also told that I have to pay for him to participate in community service.

The store said they don't care what the court system decides, their 100 has nothing to do with whatever punishment he gets legally.

He has been grounded so long that I can't remember him being ungrounded at this point. He has lost all the "fun" in his life.

One of my old bosses called and asked if she could pay him to make some desserts for her birthday party so he'll be using that money to pay the store some.
Verizon good service?

Verizon bought my carrier, Alltel.  Are you current Verizon customers happy with your service?

do you know in this situation if my pay-as-you-go plan dollars will carry over when the transition is complete?  i looked at their FAQs but cannot find my answer there. thx!

Customer service in outer space
I made a service call on my freezer this morning and got a woman who could barely speak English, then had the nerve to tell me I had a bad phone because she could barely hear me - asked where she was and naturally that would be India.

Can anyone help me with info regading setting up a service?

I am at a point in my life/marriage, where I need to start my own service rather than working as an IC.  I need info/guidance on getting my own FTP site, whether I need to provide a system for docs to dictate to (handhelds?) etc.  If anyone would be willing to help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Could be issues with 9-1-1 service and if you have a security system (sm)
I think most home security systems require a land line to work. There are some possible issues with being able to call 9-1-1 without a land line - in case you can't talk and tell them where you are.
How to cancel cell phone service
Hope somebody can help with this.  I want to cancel cell phone service (contract expired, and I simply don't use it enough).  Have AT&T/Cingular and was trying to find a way to cancel on line.  Does anybody know the magic trick?  Of course I realize they are going to make it as difficult as possible.  Just want to avoid having to talk to a customer service person, as I know I'll have to deal with the sales pitch. Thanks!
long distance phone service
I live in NW Ohio and am having a difficult time finding a LD carrier that allows medical transcription.  The company I work for only allows .5 and under but I'd prefer a plan that is flat-fee.  Any ideas?? Thanks so much.
anyone have Charter internet and phone service? sm
We live in the country and no fast speed internet is available until now. Charter has fast speed internet and telephone (and cable, but we are staying with Dish Network). I'm so excited about this! I've been working at home for 10 years now and never had anything but dial up. I've heard their customer service stinks. Anyone have experience with either service?

Thanks!
lead in toys/Made in China...beware of Happy Meal toys
I watched a special on CNN yesterday about lead content in toys. I did not realize by your child simply touching a toy and putting his fingers in his mouth he could be ingesting lead. The special included a segment on a nice family that lived in a brand new home with a 2 year old and 6 month old. They both tested positive for lead. A 2 year old!!!! Worried, I went to my boy's toybox this morning and it is AMAZING how many painted toys are from China. Most notably this includes happy meal toys. I haven't gotten through one toy box and already have a trash bag full of toys. Please, please go through your children's toys. Lead ingestion can lead to brain damage. Be paranoid. Throw away all of the made in China stuff. Christmas is just weeks away--they will be getting new stuff (hopefully stuff that is paint-free!).

Your best bet is to buy made in the USA toys but even safer toys are unpainted blocks, Legos and books. A good, safe place to look for toys is www.mindware.com.

pass this on!
change providers NOW; i am a midwife and for one, the no answering service sm
and no way to actually get a hold of someone who is at least on call for your OB, is not good practice. i always have a list of others my clients can call if for some reason they cannot get ahold of me in an emergency. top that with your uncomfortableness with the hospital and staff, change now or you will regret it later. most of the time when docs won't accept a late transfer of care is when there has been no prenatal care period. you have that and you could even get a copy of your own records and take to new OB to speed up that process. i can't see you having a good outcome giving how you are already feeling towards the hospital/nurses there.
