Saddest by far for me (tears streaming down my cheeks as I typed) was a woman who came in for either induction or C-section.  Was at the doc's office, baby was fine, but post-dates and due to come out.  Fetal activity/heart rate seen on office ultrasound.  By the time she got admitted to the hospital and arrived in her room, the full-term fetus had died --- just horribly sad.  She was given the choice of continuing with the C-section or delivering her stillborn baby.  Still breaks my heart.

On a lighter note, I always crack up over the "anal foreign body extraction" reports:  I've had ratchet man, carrot man, Ace bandage in wrapper guy, and then "self-pleasuring device" (as physician stated) guy.  I cannot imagine the humiliation of walking into the ER with that complaint.  I always picture them face-down in the back of a taxi getting a ride to the hospital...

Saddest one I remember

An older couper in their 70's, had been married for many many years and raised their family, etc.  You could tell they adored each other, laughed and were happy.  She had cancer and it was terminal.  I was a ward clerk at the time and worked the medical floor.  One evening she wasn't doing well.  She was in a lot of pain and slipping in and out of consciousness from the pain meds.  We noted the husband leaving about an hour before visiting hours were up, which he always stayed as late as he could.  He didn't say goodnight like usual, just walked by kind of fast with his head down.

Short time later nurse went to check her patients and the lady had passed away.  Tried to call husband at home, no answer.  Called second number, that of a son, and the husband happened to be at the son's home when we called.  When husband was told of wife's passing, all he said was "I know" and broke into tears.  He didn't come back to the hospital to see her, as families usually do, or to pick up her belongings, he requested that we pack them up and he'd have them picked up later.  Did she die while he was there and he just couldn't deal with it?  Did he help her out of her pain with a pillow or something?  We never knew, but it was so sad.  He was obviously heartbroken.

If you ask me, the saddest part of your post was....
when you said, "I don't believe him."
