ADMINISTRATOR: Nasty acronyms here...please delete.
This poster cannot refrain from being filthy with her language or acronyms.

STFU is an acronym for "Shut The F*** Up".

PLEASE DELETE THIS.

To Pay Attention: Grow up and clean up.
Oh, please! Nowhere was I nasty or rude.
Did I call her names or belittle her like a lot of you do on this board?  No, I merely asked how she knew she was being trained wrong and stated what my experience has been.  MTs need to be adaptable.  That's the best thing a newbie can do is to learn to be flexible according to the rules of the accounts she's put on.  Wouldn't you agree?  Honestly, if you're that hypersensitive to think that I was nasty or rude, you need to toughen up.  All I did was ask a question and state some facts.  I wasn't judgmental or condescending at all, like many others I see here.
Nasty and rude. You can
direct people to the infor they need in a much more appropriate and decent manner!
How Nasty and Rude - I think you have been at this too long.
What gives you the right to judge other people, their situations, and credibility when you have no idea what you are even judging in the first place?  You said I have no credibility with MTs.  YOU can speak for all MTs?  Really?  Then why have this board.  A question was posed to me and I answered it honestly.  Where did you get that I have a gripe?  If you will try to comprehend what you read, you will see that I was not the one with the gripe, however only trying to help some really nice people who do.  Comments like yours are not helpful or productive, only nasty and rude.
BS. You're always on here with your RUDE comments. nm

Hmm, the nasty posts have been coming from those who are either jealous or doubtful.

I have not read any positive contributions from posters who are complaining they don't make enough money working for the nationals. They are only blasting away at those posters who have taken the risk and initiative to get their own accounts. If they have something positive to say about what they're doing that makes their job profitable and fulfilling, I'm just waiting to hear it. I think they just want to complain and see how many people they can bring down with them.Go figure.

If you THINK the administrator was being rude..

methinks you ALL need to thicken up your skin.........

And no, I'm not the administrator!!

Good luck with the contests!!

I agree, nasty and rude people lately, where are the grownups is correct in a former post.
I agree with all you said. I come here sometimes just to share thoughts, experiences, and to really help others as it helps me to help. There are some unnecessary, hurtful responses on here. The admin cannot police all and she should not be expected to. Have a little consideration, people, we are all in the same lifeboat here. As for leaving the profession, think about it. I have been tempted many times, have tried working in other fields but totally boring after hearing all that I've heard as an MT. I can't read a non-fiction book as it all seems so shallow and ridiculous to me. For too many years I have shared the lives of people on a real, non-fictional basis through my work. It is an interesting and informative profession and even doctors are amazed at how much information I have  in this little brain of mine. I have on occasion saved many people in my family (including myself) from unnecessary harm or eary intervention. Please think about it before you leave us. As for this board, I llove it except for the nasty posts, but that's life. As we all know, it takes all kinds. Most people here belong in the helping profession. If they're in it for the money, it shows. Character shows up in the positive posts on here. We are, after all, supposed to be in the helping profession, not the kill or be-killed attitude some have. I would say most of us come in here for  knowledge, friendship and just plain sharing. If we have a little laugh once in awhile, it helps, but not when it turns into a cat fight. IMHO, of course!
You are a very angry nasty person.

Sorry Dano, my comment wasn't to you - but to the person that said "boards might be nasty that
by the way, I see there is one person that all of a sudden made four comments about you in a matter of five minutes ... SO MATTTTUUUURRREEE
Did you really need to be rude to that person?

PERFECT ANSWER to anyone so rude as to speak to another person in this way.
I could go on and on. My husband is a minister and you would not believe the bunk that he hears from other ministers and those in "higher" administrative positions within the church. We just smile and do exactly what you said. Or we say, "why don't you call my office for an appointment and we can discuss this further" - and they never do.
FWIW, nasty is in the eye of the beholder and you have given nasty as good as you got.
Read your posts again very carefully.
I work for the person. I know. Very excellent person, personally and business-sense.
It is an INSULT to have QA hovering over seasoned MTs who know what they are doing. She trusts her MTs and again if there are questions there is one person, a trainer, who can answer them via phone, e-mail or instant message or you can send the whole report to them if you choose.
Point was is the person willing to make up for the slack of the person who types 1 job when there is

if that is all they WANT to type.   Is the person who wants to be a supervisor willing to make up for those people?

You have crap supervisors, editors and mts in the business like you have good ones.   Sadly, the really good ones of all of them are few and far between.

When you have a QA person that is picky and another QA person that is very lenient where does that
leave the MTs because some are getting a lenient reviewer and others are getting one that picks at everything. How do you reconcile that issue with the difference in QA mentality. Some people make out well and the other people could be just as good but dont. I wonder about that.
The person MTSO pays is the person who

after being nasty, now you want to

It got nasty
Those posts got pretty nasty between a few people.  I have strong convictions about a lot of things but I would not have come across as some do on this board.  I often feel that when someone comes across like that it usually means that there has been a problem in that area  -- he who does protest too much. But we all do have a right to our own opinions and I try to look at everyone's.  I understand where having a glass of wine is not someone's cup of tea but because I do (and maybe not every one can keep it in moderation) does not mean I am unprofessional, irresponsible or not capable of doing my job.  Would be glad to match years of experience, paychecks and longevity of accounts with any of you that called me unprofessional, irresponsible and uncapable of doing my job.    Patti
who got nasty?

I certainly didn't, and nobody got nasty with me. In fact, it was one of the better heated discussions I've seen or been involved in. And I've been in the middle of some lulus!!! (but not here)

You want sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows ... turn on Lesley Gore.

Don't let someone with a nasty
attitude ruin your self-esteem about what you have done with your life. Just consider the source. They sound bitter to me and try to make it everyone else's fault. Keep up your good work and ignore what someone who does not matter has to say. Just be thankful you do not work for her.
Truly, I did not mean to be nasty, but with the...sm
problem you reported with your resumes not being responded to, it wasn't clear if you were just more casual here. You could just as easily replied there wasn't anything wrong your grammar. Having worked in human resources before, I know most resumes/correspondence gets 15 seconds to 1 minute of time. I have personally blown a couple job opportunities because I set the wrong tone with my resume, e-mail, and cover letter (jobs I really, really wanted), and I was only trying help. I have certainly been at my wits end in this business, too, and feel for those MTs who feel stuck in a job they're not happy with.
Not only are you a nasty sm
BEACH, but you have sand in your nether regions! I have never seen anyone on this board with more nasty bones in their body then you have.

The reason you aren't making any money is because YOU ARE HANGING OUT HERE SPEWING YOUR BILE.
Two comments....

First of all, everything you say may be true of the mother regarding her suspicion, but as I always try to do before I criticize and pass judgment on others, first try to mentally "walk a mile in her shoes."  You might be thinking the same thing under similar circumstances.

Secondly, she signed a waiver for her daughter to go on that trip with full knowledge that these "adult children" were not going to be supervised by these chaperones in any fashion other than just being "available" if they needed them and to help out if anyone lose their passport or suitcase, stuff like that.  The mother knew full well why she was letting her daughter got to Aruba... TO DRINK AND PARTY!   If she didn't know that, then she's a dense as they come.  I wouldn't give my daughter 2 cents towards a trip to Aruba at age 18.  There's only one reason to go to an island like that, to drink.  If the beach is what you want, we've been known to have a few beaches here in the USA, but they don't want that, they want to be free to party it up.  So you can't blame the chaperones, at least not in my opinion.

Does nobody want to comment on how much they get paid?

Dee, if you do not have one already, try out an ergonomic split keyboard. Those are the best. I notice that for any reason if I have to use a plain keyboard that I start developing wrist pain.
OT Comments
You should keep a separate record of hours worked so that should you ever decide to file something with the Department of Labor that you worked OT hours that were not paid you have a record to submit. Other MTs have done that in the past and indeed been paid the back pay they were entitled to.
thanks for the comments!
I appreciate knowing this can be done...

Thank you for your posting; I find it very useful.  However, I want to comment on the fact that, during training, I never heard of the BOS and received absolutely no feedback.  So, to think that newly trained MTs are ahead of the others, is not necessarily correct.

As a matter of fact, the very first time that I ever heard of the AAMT Book of Style was upon receiving the graded and corrected FINAL EXAM for my course (Career Step) which made reference to my use of a dangerous abbreviation.  I then inquired as to WHAT IS A DANGEROUS ABBREVIATION, at which time someone did RESEARCH and, after a few days of research, reported to me that she had to ask someone else and discovered that a dangerous abbreviation was defined by AAMT, as mentioned in the BOOK OF STYLE.  I immediately purchased a copy of the book and studied it on my own.

I think that none of us fits into any one category.  I hate it when I am stereotyped, especially with regards to what a potential employer may think I know or do not know, or may be capable of doing, as determined by the exact number of years that I have been working.  There are plenty of exceptionally good companies out there who have totally rejected me due solely to the fact that I have less than the number of years of experience that they require, while my current employer constantly gives me the most difficult jobs because I am, in his mind, "one of the best."    Of course, I can't wait until I have those required number of years of experience so that I can reject those very companies that rejected me back in the days when I only had 2 years of experience!!

thanks for the comments
I appreciate the replies to my inquiry.  Everyone have a good day.

I appreciate this thread.  It has been very educational. BTW, not only can it be a difficult situation when you work for a "family" business with the wife being the office manager, but I have had negative experiences as a patient when the wife was the doctor's manager.  It just doesn't work out.

While I agree that "other duties as assigned" can be interpreted in many ways, there must be a limit to this.

What I have learned from this thread.

1.  If you have two professions such as Nurse AND MT, write a separate resume for each.  Whether or not you reveal your transcription skills to an employer who is employing you as a nurse is your decision, but should not be required.
2.  As an IC MT, write your own contract.  Stipulate that your MT "business" includes certain duties only pertaining to medical transcription and performed at your location during the hours that you decide.
3.  Stipulate that because MT is your private business entity, due to conflict of interest (or whatever terminology you decide), you do not conduct your private business functions during the same hours as the employee job unless you want to and it is clearly understood that there will be separate charges.
4.  Once you have an established business and income for that business you may need some kind of business license or need to be registered.  The laws vary determined by your state and/or city, county, etc.  However, usually you do not need to register your business until it is actually making a profit.  In the meantime, the existence of your business on paper would offer you some kind of protection against an employer who has employed you as a nurse and is attempting to take advantage of your transcription skills.
5.  If an employer attempts to have you do transcription on the side, out comes the contract.
6.  Do not offer discounts to anyone simply because they are a friend or employer.  Treat them all the same, require them to pay extra for extra services.  Spell it all out in the contract.  In other words, protect yourself and set them up in the beginning so that they know they will not be able to take advantage of you.

Last I looked, the nurse practice ACT, at least for RNs, is rather specific and does not include such tasks as mopping floors or transcribing dictation.  You sound like a very nice person who has attracted someone who seeks to take advantage of your kind nature.  Don't let them do it.

I just had a nasty conversation with a
telephone rep from India who informed me that all Americans were uneducated, stupid, and "farmers" and that India was getting all the jobs because they were all educated. She shut her fat mouth when I asked if that is why India still practices putting female infants on the hillsides to be eaten by wolves, why so many of their people are starving to death, and why disease is so rampant. They are getting to be the most arrogant bunch of people I have ever seen.
Nasty women
You know women should be supportive of each other. Let's face it, men aren't, like the lady said. I worked in offices where some of the women there were so nasty and catty and rude. Seems lots of them are on here too. Thank God for being able to work at home. I don't think anyone is looking for pity on this board, but for crying out loud, doesn't anybody have a warm heart anymore. There are lots of cold-hearted people on here talking, must be from the East Coast.
You are nasty!!!! You need to find a better
maybe, just maybe that would help your attitude. Otherwise, but out and stay off this board. You are not wanted.
My son just had it 2 weeks ago, very nasty.
He was so sick that he ended up sleeping on the bathroom floor (worse than a bad hangover) with vomiting and diarrhea. It lasted almost 24 hours and he was horribly weak for the next day as well.
NASTY EMAIL
just remember, the door of professionalism swings both ways!
nasty email
I worked for a lady who would send me nasty email in all CAPS and in BOLD.  Finally I asked her if was her version of yelling at me and she said "no, I was in bold and caps and forgot to remove"  Yah Right.  She never did it to me again.  I just thought How UNPROFFESIONAL! I don't work for her anymore and I am treated respectfully by my new employer.
If this is just a nasty rumor,
then some of the news stations on TV (notably CNN) are in big trouble, because they are reporting it as fact. They report that if you click on Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (and one other that I can't remember), you will be directed to other movies you might like, such as Planet of the Apes, etc., featuring black actors. This is all very derogatory and racially biased and Wal-Mart is falling all over itself apologizing, so it must have some basis in fact.

Nasty QA comment?
Dear OldQA:

I am one of the recently laid off Heartland employees. I went to this message board for some job hunting and support in light of this situation, and I was completely baffled by some of the things I read. Here are 2 of many comments from your not-so-nasty colleagues as an example of what I‘m talking about:

(Posted by MsAnonnie Mouse)
First of all, I would like to say that I sympathsize wtih those that were laid off at Heartland, however, I believe that that there were probably indications that this was going to happen, I for one, remember seeing a LOT of job ads for Heartland and they suddenly stopped on the 2 major transcription job boards. For me, that was an indication that something was going down the tube.
I also do not agree wtih offshoring, but when I read the posts on this board, I see one theme over and over; that being laziness in general. I see posts where people gripe and complain about having to work weekends or nights or whatever and wanting to get paid decent money, but they want to only be able to work 8-5 Monday through Friday. I have been in this field for over 20 years and I believe that I have always pulled my fair share. I have seen it in the company that I work for now, and the work load goes up dramatically on the weekends, because NOBODY wants to work and as we all know, medical transcription, for the most part, is a profession that is 24/7.
Sadly to say, our society has become one, where we expect to have something for nothing. Meaning that we want the nice thinngs, but we don't have to break our necks for it. I hear of friends who are giving their kids brand-new to almost brand-new cars in high school. Heck, when I was growing up, if I wanted contacts, or a car, or clothes, I had to detassel corn or work in a fast food place to get the money to be able to have those things. I don't see that happening now, and in essence, that is why so many of our jobs have been offshored. Its not only a cheaper labor cost, but most of these people in general have a better work ethic.
My company takes pride in the fact that it doesn't offshore and it will be a cold day in a very warm place before they do.
My only advice to those that were laid off is to hang in there, send out the resumes and hopefully, you will be able to find a new company that will treat you like an employee and not a number.

Some people seem to be missing the point here -- I also do QA as well as medical transcription and I generally am working MANY hours a day and usually 6-7 days a week, because I know budget-wise what it takes for me to surviive.
As a QA person, I see a quality of work that is totally unacceptable and it is from American medical transcriptionists. I read about people saying they can do X number of lines in an hour, or that they type X number of words a minute and as a QA person, that is usually the persons report that has 10 or more blanks in it, because UNFORTUNATELY they are more concerned about production than they are quality.
I sometimes wonder how many medical transcriptionists go back and re-listen to a report they have typed and then are able to figure out what the doctors are saying?
I have worked both inhouse and from home and I really have to agree that if someone TRULY wants to get started in this field, then they should work onsite first to truly get a grasp at what medical transcription entails.
There ARE people who are medcal transcriptionists who DO work long and hard hours and ARE getting shafted by the companies they work for, but quite frankly, I am tired of the ones who have toddlers and small children at home and whine about how they can do this work and take care of their kids too -- just because you work at home, dosen't mean that your children can be underfoot all the time and it is also learning about priorities as well. If you were working on the outside, you would NOT be allowed to take a huge amount of time off for kid activities or family activities, so the MTSOs do have legitimate gripes when it comes to employees not working when they say they will or keeping to a schedule, and this is where I am coming full circle when I talk about a work ethiic -- it has slowly and steadily been disappearing over the years.

Real nice show of support huh? There is nothing more disgusting than using the subject of layoffs, or offshoring for that matter, as a platform to complain about your own problems and dissatisfaction with your job. Shame on them!

Dear Scribevibe: With that being said, you WILL come across nasty, condescending comments such as these (on this message board as well as when you're working). I have been doing this for years, and I still come across them, and they are OBNOXIOUS! You need to let their comments roll off your back or they'll drive you nuts. There are QAs out there who are helpful and even sometimes encouraging, but be prepared for ones who are not and IGNORE THEM (and their nitpicking). Don't let them "snark" you :)
Oh I think she's VERY nasty, but I LOVE her! lol

Hm, been my experience that QA's not usually nasty
Only time I've ever used the exclamation point when communicating with an MT is when they have thoroughly ticked me off by completely ignoring my previous requests....
Don't mean to sound nasty but this is a
are trying to get out.
not nasty -- testy, because....

if you had all the best accounts in your livelihood taken away and were left with the dregs, you'd be a little annoyed at anyone who had benefited from that who then had the audacity to try to then insinuate themselves into this one precious place that is supposed to be just for us.  I know, run-on sentence.

Read all you like, but don't post.

not trying to be nasty, just stating sm
a fact. Too many MTs out there without sufficent education and they are suppose to mess around until they "realize" that they don't have the education?

I have seen schools make promises to these people that they can't keep. I have warned people not to put their money into these schools and most don't listen. Have actually had people call after they "finish" school and tell me that they cannot or could not transcribe the tapes given to them on a final examination.

Sure wish folks would listen. This is not a career for folks to walk into hoping to be a "fast learner." I wonder if your doctor is a "fast learner?" This kind of attitude has brought this profession down to nothing more than a typist.
website comments
You should go take another look at ripoffreport.com. Read the rebuttals, there seems to be more of them than the actual complaints. Pretty much most of the complaints are people who signed up to sell and decided they didn't want to anymore. Definitely not a fault of AmeriPlan. And like most of the rebuttals say on there, get your facts straight before you post your allegations on the web. There is always going to be some people with every company who are not going to be satisfied and complain about it.
some various comments you all might relate too

When asked what I do for a living, I tell them, the response I get the most is this "oh, i've heard of that.  Been wanting to get into it as a side job."  Gee thanks.

Or "Did you have to go to school for that?"  And actual disbelief when I tell them I did.

Or "Don't you get sick of not being around people?"  Again...gee thanks.  What am I a shut in?  I still at least go out and check my mail a couple times a week!

Or "Whats that"  Blank look on face or extreme disinterest or disappointment.  Gee, thanks again.

And here's the meanest one that I received from a guy I was dating for awhile "Are you just afraid of being successful?"  Hmmm.....can I get a gee thanks?

Thank you for your comments, but I would not be posting

and asking for any more money if I had not checked into the situation thoroughly first.  UPS even said that they hire extra drivers over the holidays that do not use UPS vehicles, so anything could have happened.  I'm not pleased about this situation, but I am trying to at least provide a Christmas for the kids.
