Can Someone Help This Electronically Challenged Boomer?

I was looking on the job board a few weeks ago and decided to check out one of the jobs and they had a list of what you needed to work for them. Talk about being out in left field! I have worked for TL/MQ since the 80's and everything as far as a computer has always been fixed for us so we don't have to do anything but type. I had no clue what they were talking about ...

They said you have to have a sound card - doesn't that come with a computer?

You have to have a game port for a 15-pin foot pedal? I have no clue what a game port is and don't know anything about foot pedals. *deep sigh*

I don't know what a Windows XP Pro Service pack 1 or newer is - I just know I have Windows XP on my computer.

I sent a resume to a company (sounded like a nice and easy job) and they sent me an email with attachments. One had some kind of audio files on it - didn't know how to get them, another had some kind of test where I was supposed to fill in the blanks - again, clueless how to get that test to where I could type on it. Needless to say, I thanked them for looking at my resume and knew I had to find these things out.

Can someone please help me????

I just signed up with the Federal Govt. program of EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System). It does it all. I plan to do weekly payments this year in order to make it less painful, as I expect my income this year to go up by at least 50% if not 100%, hence so will my tax any my husband's extra taken out of his check won't cover what I owe this year. -----by the way, if you have always been an IC, you have been paying FICA.....it's call Self-employment tax (SE Tax). SE tax is everything rolled into one, FICA, Medicare, etc. If you have not been paying it, then expect a big surprise one of these days.
what leads your believe coding will be electronically?
just curious.
The boomer babes. sm
I miss my IBM selectric.  When I trained if you made a mistake or the doc said go back up and insert this or that, you simply had to start over.  No "white-out", and I know only you other boomers will know, if your IBM correction tape could not delete it enough you started over.  I think we were the most fortunate to train in that era.  We had no internet to jump on, and my goodness, how difficult but fun was it for all of you when we actually had a "word processor" known  now as a much-updated computer. I had to work on that IBM Memory thing one time, and I hated that, if you accidentally put in a return, a return you would get printed out!  Anyone else remember those days?  When you had to actually look in about 8 or 9 books while training, and then, and only then, could you ask for help?  I still miss my IBM selectric III.  After training I had an IBM wheelwriter and that thing was awesome - we truly were bonded, just like I was with my little yellow Volkswagon.  I know I am ranting, and the technology today is amazing, I never thought I would see it in my lifetime, I just sort of miss the "good old days".

well, right now i'm *challenged*
So until i'm paid on salary to do all the extras that go with the awful dictation lately, like becoming an interpreter, i'll take the easy way any day.  Disenchanted by the field as of late.  Used to love it.
QA does not like to be challenged.
I am not the original poster but I have also challenged QA with sample reports administered from the company, and the QA basically said I had "old" samples.  So I get blamed for making errors but QA dings me because I am following a supposed sample report they give me and I'm supposed to know that it is an old report?  Then I ask for samples for another format and QA sends me reports that I have typed from a couple of months ago and states "I give these same samples to all of my new MT's."  Well I'm glad to know that my work has now been used as "the sample" of choice.... LOL  and I SCORE - 2 points!  QA is just unbelievable.  It is pretty bad when you are with a company for less than 6 months and you know more about the account specifics than the so-called QA people do.  I have to be nice to QA because they are just trying to do their job as well but sometimes it does get a little ridiculous.  QA is supposed to be helpful not hurtful.  JMO.  Live and learn is what I say.
Technically Challenged
I just had to reply.  I'm technically challenged too.  Nice to know I'm not all alone in my technically challenged world.   I do agree with the other post -- it depends.  Check with the person on the other end. Good luck.
technically challenged

I really am a throw back in time.  Help!  I am trying to test for a company, I can get the test file downloaded through FTP to windows media player, but how do I get the foot pedal to work with it and transcribe in word.  Dumb, Dumb, Dumb I know.

re below technically challenged
Okay everyone of you tech savvy people - I downloaded express scribe, but what do I do now?  I can down load the FTP file, but it still just goes to windows media player and the pedal does not work.  The pedal does work for the welcome to express scribe message.  I need to be able to transcribe it in Word.  I tried selecting "load," but that does not seem to work either. I'm doomed!!
hmm...feeling challenged here LOL

I am sooo computer challenged. Please can you help? sm
I am trying to test for a company that sent me the test via e-mail attachment.  The test file had to be unzipped which I did using Winzip.  But now, I have no idea how to get it to play.  What am I supposed to do now to get me sound card to play it.  I feel sooo dumb, but I've just never had to go through all these hoops.  I've always just been able to click and listen.  Ugh.
