home loan foreclosure (sm)
does anyone know the protocol for a home foreclosure.  I believe my lender may be foreclosing, (it is a by owner sale, the lender is a person, not a company) but we have not been notified of anything.  Does anyone happen to know how this process works?  Should we have received something either in the mail or brought by the sheriff to our home?
ITA with home equity loan if possible. sm

If credit is good you can get a prime rate, or maybe even 0.25% below prime.  Can get about 2% below prime for 3 months, but for most people this isn't reasonable.

Trying to get a credit card to consolidate might not work, because if you have that much $$ outstanding (I'm thinking other credit cards) you aren't going to be able to get much credit and you'll just have 1 more credit card to deal with.  Also, lots of credit cards will offer 0% for 6-14 months, BUT if you read the fine print you may have a transfer fee of 3% of the balance.  Sometimes there is a cap on the total, but not always.   Also, pay CLOSE attention to the grace period.  We had a card that had a 25-day grace period, but by the time I got the statement and the time they received payment I was outside my grace period, thus we were charged interest, even though we paid the card in full.

If at all possible don't get a credit card to help get you out of debt.  Call current creditors and see if they will lower your rate.  If you have good credit they probably will, if bad credit you are probably out of luck.  I would cancel some of the cards too.  It won't help you pay off the debt, but will stop you from getting more.

I know this isn't what you asked, but BTDT and learned the hard way, and hoping to present other options you might not have considered.

Has anyone received a personal loan lately?

I had unexpected expenses and had to get a small one from HSBC.  Here are the questions I was asked:

Do you have medical insurance?  If so, what are the deductibles for hospital stays, office visits.

Do you have life insurance and if so, how much?

Do you have disability ins and if so, how much?

What is your home owner's insurance deductible?

What is car insurance deductible?

Who are your insurance carriers?

I do not recall these types of questions.  I ended up buying 10/mo insurance coverage which includes disability and life insurance...for $2600.  I am 48.

Is this new?
