Hate to add to your confusion, but have you ever given thought to working as a SE ??

Posted By: Indy-MT on 2006-12-02
In Reply to: Thanks to all for your replies. I - sm - still dazed and confused!

I know there are very few companies offering such but, in my opinion, it's like having the freedom and flexibilty of an IC with some of the benefits of being an employee. I am a SE and have the stability of a company that offers me more than enough work and the freedom of when I work with a 24-hour turnaround time. I don't have PTO, but between the increase in pay I received when hired (after being stagnant for 12 yrs with prior company) and the fact that they withhold Federal & MedCare taxes for me,I'm able to put the X-Tra money toward my own PTO, insurance,or increase my payment on credit cards.

After reading that PTO for employees at my former company is now having to be used when there is no work - I do believe I made the right decision to seek a company that offered SE status. My "stash" of PTO will be used as "I" see fit.

FYI - I have been with this company for 1 yr & have experienced only one slow-down of work which occurred over the past Fourth of July holiday. Other than that, if I've wanted to work 24/7,the work has been there.

Just something I wondered if you had ever considered. I just feel I have the best of both worlds. Just depends on you and your needs.

I hate the thought of him leaving!
I am listening to Kaysar explain the future plan to Howie (who I love, but seems dumb as a rock sometimes) and Janelle (who I think is smarter than she appears). It is making sense what he's saying but isn't something I'd think of. Kay is telling them to get rid of James next, that the best chance to get rid of him is next when the Friendship will help to evict him if he is up against one of their own. Otherwise if Maggie goes, James will take her place as leader of the 4 followers. Makes total sense what all Kay is saying. He is one smart cookie... if it weren't for his trusting nature, he would win this game easily. Jen will get hers when she comes out of the house and has most of America on her back for evicting their favorite houseguest.. but of course she will pretend she doesn't care what people say or think.. She is so insecure though that we all know she does. :-)
I love Dog -- Thought I would hate it, but really like it, same goes for that new show Miami Ink, -

One of the worse things about working from home is never getting away from it. I hate

I hate when companies treat us like we're working for pin money

Am I supposed to be happy when a company only gives me 200 or 300 lines a day when they promise you a certain amount (that is higher than that)? How would the company employees (not us lowly transcriptionists) feel if the company told them that they were only getting paid 100 dollars this pay period, that there wasn't enough work. Not enough to pay bills and keep food on the table, just pin money.

Sheesh.

Love psych notes. HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE,
HATE ER notes.
I don't think so, I thought she was working for

I did try the Belkin and I thought it was working but the first time I let up on my foot pedal
it just stopped and froze up my computer. I tried all of the COM ports I could think of. Today, I ordered the Dynex adapter which is the other adapter that Escription recommends and I'm going to try that. I am not giving up. I do hope that in version 8 of Editscript that really do make the foot pedals USB and get into this century. It's almost impossible to find new computers that have the serial ports on them anymore. I will update you on this Dynex adapter when I try it out now. So, for the time being, I am packing along my little portable computer when I travel. It's pretty small but it's just having to bubble wrap the flat monitor that is a pain. At least, I get to work and play. It'd just be nice if I could take my laptop instead..
confusion
confusion is the name of the game for them -- they don't want the MTs to figure it out, but I do think that MTs do have some intelligent snap or else they wouldn't be MTs, but that's kind of hard to get across to someone who constantly puts the client first and tends to ignore or take forever to listen to MTs concerns - like the speed on the system that you can't slow down to figure out the garble that 99.9% of the docs throw at us.
Confusion
I believe there is a misunderstanding -- I had said 6 cpl for her, 2 cpl for me. And true, I sure would prefer to earn 9-13 cpl, but have not encountered a situation yet which grants me as much freedoms and a good working relationship as I currently enjoy. Thank you for your input and I sure will keep you all posted on our progress.
confusion..sm
I have added entries to my *test expansion* (auto correct) and I have also created macros for numerous addresses for doctors envelopes. I want to save both of these, so I can reformat my hard drive without losing all of this valuable information. Again, BOTH macros and auto text.
I think the confusion is that there are two flames!
One: A flame picture shows up to the left of a *hot* post or one that has been viewed I think more than 200 times.

Two: To be flamed, is an expression, like if you post something and a bunch of people post back in disagreement etc. It has nothing to do with the other.

I got a kick out of the fact that you thought you were being *flamed* (flame #2) for your post!

I'm pretty sure that's accurate and hope it helps!
grrr - more confusion
I tried calling HP and they recommended Word Office Suite 2007 (another $400) - but I think I read somewhere that 2007 is not compatible... ??   and that Transcriptionists are going with Word 2003 ??
normal.dot confusion... plz help!

Surely someone else has encountered this problem.  Well, we got a brand spankin' new Dell XPS 420 to our door yesterday!  It is wonderful... I just have a slight problem.  Had Word 2007 loaded onto it and now trying to figure out how to convert my normal.dot from Word 2003 to this.  Any help?  It is loaded with a ton of info that I REALLY need.

TIA

Whoops! DH gave DD the car (sorry for the confusion)!
What happened was that I thought a second hand car was fine and she should pay for it like I did in high school but he said, "Are you kidding? You bought your own car in high school in 1975 when it cost a couple hundred bucks. If she bought her own car now she'd need a loan for the friggin' thing. It's just not possible anymore for kids to buy anything like that from a minimum wage job at the Dairy Queen, plus if by some act of God she was able to it would be a piece of junk and unsafe."

Word Expander Confusion
Okay, I am not a veteran transcriptionist, but not new either.  I have never been taught the use of increasing productivity by word expanders, macros, etc.  I have been doing some research, downloaded some trials, but I am still very confused.  What is the difference between purchasing an Expander or just adding words to autocorrect already built in the computer?  What is the best program to get?  Can anyone take the time to enlighten me?  Thanks in advance.  If once taught, I think I could really catch on, but I am confused!!  Jill

Line count questions/confusion/upset

I would like some line count pros to help me figure this out, please!  During the recruiting process I specifically asked how I would be getting paid and I was told "per line which includes 65 characters including spaces, footers, headers, and any norms pulled into the report."  I downloaded the FlashCount program from this site and started comparing this line count against the company's.  So far, It "appears" that I'm getting shorted about 100+/- lines/day and they are using more like 74 characters with spaces.  What is the difference between cpl and gross cpl?  How would you interpret their explanation for how I would be paid?  Is the FlashCount program accurate enough?

Thanks!

Oops! No, I wish, but I get .065 cpl for a line consisting of 11 words. Sorry for the confusion!

I hate those but I hate trauma notes on children even more sm
I used to work for a large hospital that saw a lot of children for various horrible things.

The very last one I did was a 12yo boy who had hung himself while his mother was at work. She thought he was in school. The doctor cried, I cried (as I usually did) and I just couldn't handle that anymore. That was the longest report I swear. Short in lines but the length was almost an hour. The doc didn't pause the machine, she cried, horrible gut wrenching sobs, and I did too, right along with her.
I don't hate AAMT at all, ks. I don't hate
their book. In fact, I love the BOS2. It is not a regular grammar book at all - there are hundreds of issues in it that are point specific to MTing and medical field. I have dozens of regular grammar books, too, for other purposes, and they are not similar at all. I purchased the BOS2 when out job interviewing for a few months. Every single employer wanted me to have my own company, and they all tested off of it. Several used it in their daily work, and I have found it priceless over all. I think its even on sale now, but $89 is not a lot for a professional tool that we should use if required, or if a newbie. MTs who don't like to buy books are not very wise in the big picture. Its like shooting yourself in the foot.
MQ motto: Confusion To The Enemy. (MTs are the enemy)

How dare we expect to be paid.  We are their subservient women working "from home" (how dare hous fraus want to be paid money for sitting around in their PJs)

Have I got that right yet?

Forget that this is hard work, takes many years of training, and lots of investment of our own money just to be able to do it.

I need some coffee, brb

You get more working the evening or night shifts and working w/o benefits. And producing like a mad
,
Ditto....granted I am not working much these days, but am currently trying out a new way of working
when I do work which seems to be helping.  I am timing myself and keeping a log of how long it takes to to type however many minutes.  I am averaging anywhere from 13-18 minutes of dictation an hour now doing this.  Granted the time fluctuates between who I am typing, and if I have to look up names, addresses, etc., just depends on the division I am doing at the time.  But work that used to take me 3 hours to do is now taking me under 2 hours, I am also trying to put in more macros as I go along, which slows me down initially but pays off in the long run of course.  I was working "all the time" before but took forever to get done since I was not applying myself. This new "attitude" has helped me a lot.  My goal, in the Fall, is to do 90 minutes a day consistently at 6 hours, and then maybe get up to 120 minutes a day at 8 hours, still while having at least half of the day free (do 60 minutes at night, and the other 60 by Noon).  Thereby doing 1200-1400 lines a day.  I have never really buckled down and done more than 8000 lines per pay period, so it will be a nice change.  Maybe you can do something like that and have a specific knock off time as was suggested below.
Working holidays? Out shopping in stores where someone IS working

that holiday you refuse to work?  Grocery stores, food joints & seems any store is open on holidays and you expect them to be fully staffed, so why shouldn't we?

Yes, I took off for the first time on Christmas day, in 18 years and it was great, but I worked Christmas eve and this whole past weekend.

Someone has to do it!

working IN A HOSPITAL is different than working at home.
Someone can steal you identity from the internet if they want to. Why would you go to the time and trouble to jeopardize a job that requires some level of skill to steal someone's identity or medical records? You could get a job as a retail clerk and get info easier than going through the testing required to become an MT.
Somehow working at home translates into not really working
My in-laws are the worst. Whenever they plan something last minute and my husband says that I had to work, they say, "but she works at home!". When I one time mentioned I had a "schedule" and basically punch a clock and work full time, I don't think they believed me. They will sometimes call mid-day during the week if they are in the area to see if I want to go for lunch, etc! The best is, my husband doesn't make all that much money, so where is it coming from, the money fairy? I am ready to strangle someone! So I know how you feel and I'm sorry it upset you. You are not alone.
I daydream about NOT working while I'm working.

There are so many other things I need and want to get done.  I've been working way too hard lately, and summer is just slipping by again.  Well, I'm outty.

I HATE it when that happens nm
nm
I really hate that
for you.  Had you gotten past that experience I believe you would have found it to be a place where you would have really been happy. Doesn't sound at all like their techs.  Could be it was just a bad day for both of you.  Unfortunately that happens sometimes.   Hope you find a company you're happy with soon.
Don't you just hate it when .....sm
a dictator blobbers a word/phrase and the client claims something like "if you just listened to this 40 times in various speeds, very quiet conditions and through 2 different phone systems or  PCs you should have been able to figure this out."   Of course we all want to rebut with "and if your dictator wouldn't talk with his mouth full of his Wendy's hamburger while driving down the interstate with the convertible top open, and on a speaker phone we could hear him/her the first time without a problem!"
I don't hate MQ, but---
I don't like the decrease in my lines since starting on DQS either. It is not what it was promised to be. I am working a lot longer and harder now and I still cannot get the lines I used to on Medrite. I also wish they would be better about giving raises to those of us who are faithful employees and are always there for THEM. I have also been with them for over 8 years.
HATE IT, HATE IT, HATE IT!

no thanks, hate CNN too......LOL..nm

hate it

I hate when that happens...
you have my sympathies!
I hate that
I mean if they really want to talk to me why be as inconsiderate as to keep me waiting and take up my important time sitting there listening to nothing. I wait and wait so I can say for them not to call again. Sometimes they take forever to get the real live being on the line. Why would I buy something from someone who saw me as so unimportant as to keep me waiting like that.
Yep, I really like my job - it's the pay I hate :)

Happy  Day!!

I really hate that!
I remember, back in the old days, we used our common sense when dealing with numbers.  We'd say "an 80-year-old man who has had cancer for five years, having undergone 12 radiation treatments."  Anything under the number 10 would be spelled out, except for lists, etc.; those would be in numbers.  Whose idea was it to change the rules of proper English, punctuation, and grammar?  (Change is hard for me, I admit.)
I would hate it and have already had a job like that - sm
though they did not call you to ask why a report took "too" long in their eyes, but they monitored you closely. I did not like the feeling of "big brother watching". Tell management to try typing the report and see how long it takes them....sometimes 5 minute reports can take 30 minutes. I average 14-15 minutes an hour, so it would have probably taken me 20 minutes; 30 it is was a hard ESL or I had to look a lot of stuff up (which I have to do depending on which doctor I have, i.e. addresses, which slows me down tremendously). If it's a good job I'd go for it, and as you already know the doctors you should have no problem. You can always quit if you don't like it.
Does he hate you now for it?
x
Hate to say it...
But you may be going about it with the wrong attitude. Think about it as a lifestyle change, not a "diet", and you may have better success. And yes, keep the exercising up, that's a great plus no matter what!
Hate it!
When my youngest was 5 or so, the time changed at this time of year, I told him to go to bed (it was still quite light outside). He said, NO, It's not dark yet, I don't have to! I said yes you do the time changed. He said "Well, put it back!" I said I can't I didn't make that change. He said, "Well call the governor and make him fix it!"

I still laugh over that, but I agree wholeheartedly LOL.
HATE IT
NM
And don't you just hate it when they tell you to sm
schedule your doctor appointments for off work hours? Heck, I go 70 miles 4 times a year to see 2 physicians and not always on the same day. No way I can schedule these for "off work time". They are both booked solid for as long as 6 months in advance, so I have to take whatever I can get.
OT, but, does anyone hate sex?

I just HATE it when sm
my husband cuts the grass under my window when I am working.  Granted, it is only about 20 minutes he is out there but it really peeves me. Oh well, I'll keep quiet about it. Otherwise, I'll have to do it myself. Really though, I am grateful I have him. It's just that sometimes.......
Don't you hate it when ...
the doc dictates a mile-a-minute, but then answers his cell phone in the middle of the dictation and speaks completely and absolutely clearly and at a normal rate of speed!!!!!!!

Aaarrrrrrgggggghhhhhhh!
