I just bought a pair of Able Planet (Lynx) NC Headphones I'll give you a great deal on! SM
I did a ton of research and found that many preferred these headphones over the Bose. They were actually more expensive. I paid over $300.00 for these! The only reason I purchased these was because I could charge them on my Dell account. They really are awesome. I can't even hear myself type when I turn on the NC feature. They are comfortable, but after 18 years as an MT, I've just gotten used to the stethoscope style or earbuds.

If you'd like to contact me, I'll give you an offer you can't refuse!
I don't know what the big deal is. Why is a laptop any different
than a desktop?  You would save files the same way, you would send/receive work the same way.  If you are thinking about the laptop transmission being wireless, it can, doesn't have to be.  I used a laptop for 7 years.  I was connected to my cable modem when necessary.   I didn't have to be on-line to work and would work off-line, then connect again to send my completed work if I wanted to work on the patio or in the care while traveling.
I bought a Dell because I got a better deal than buying locally.
I got the computer, Windows XP, WordPerfect, other software, a photo printer and a digital camera shipped to my door for $398.  However, I worked as a computer technician for several years, so I know I can add components, fix it, or upgrade as needed.  I don't like the fact that Dell offshores so many jobs, because they totally forced technical pay rates down, laid off thousands of American workers, and forced computer prices down.  However, I figured they'd be losing money on this deal if I just bought their basic system on sale with nothing added.  Some guy from India called wanting to sell me an extended warranty and service plan.  I told him NO because I can do all of that myself, as well as working any job at their company.  I didn't want to buy locally because most of the local computer stores are staffed by idiots.  There's a high rate of bankruptcy and computer stores going out of business here, then they won't honor their warranties.
This is what I bought for our RV & my laptop
You may have seen this advertised before on TV. I bought it from LTD Commodities but I am sure it is available many other places. It is inexpensive, quite adjustable, you can break it down, and it is very lightweight. I use it at home as a TV tray as well.
just bought used laptop HELP

ok i just bought a used laptop.  when i was at the guy's house, the internet was going.  now, i'm at my house and it won't connect to my wireless network.  it shows it on the screen, but won't connect.  it is so frustrating.  is it the firewall on?  is there something i need to do to get it to work?  I'm going to get a sprint broadband card for it, so not like it really matters, but i just want the internal wireless to work anyways. why isn't it working?

It is a GREAT company and great deal! I've had
Vonage about 6 months now and I love it. The only mistake I made was trying to keep my original phone # - I wouldn't recommend that. You have a temp # for a while, and the other provider can fight for the old #, etc. Go to vonage. com. They have new features all the time! There is even a new soft phone that is a phone on your screen. You don't need a real phone when working - just headset. It has 800 #s you can have very inexpensively - great voice mail. You get emails when you have new messages, etc. I only wish I had used them a year ago! Nothing but good things to say, and I complain about everything!
i just bought a laptop for same reasons.
I chose a Toshiba, because of Consumer's ratings, customer reviews, and customer service i've heard about (and sale price!). I didn't realize i'd need a wireless router, but luckily it came in the bundle purchase. If you want to use external devices, check for port types. Mine has 4 USBs but no PS2 that my keyboard requires, so i've ordered an adapter. From what little i know i suggest no less than 1 GB capacity (esp with Vista), and 2 if you can afford it. Enjoy Phoenix!
I bought a laptop with XP recently off of
EBay that was a refurbished one, to be safe I also bought a 2-year warranty just to cover it. Any computer store, Staples, etc. can build you a computer with XP, or check on line with EBay, Google computers with XP, etc. They are still out there, just cannot buy them direct (or hard to find them) through Dell, Gateway, etc.
I bought a new laptop at dell.com yesterday with XP
The deal they were running was that you can buy certai new computers and have them preloaded with XP. You also get the Vista CD so if you ever want to upgrade you alread have it. It cost an extra $150 but worth it to me. Also they do a free upgrade in memory to 2 GB.Check it out. I think the deal is limited time only. My is set to ship on 08/04/08. I am SOOO excited.
What kind of Laptop

Any advice on a laptop for transcribing would be greatly appreciated, like what type and do you need any special equipment to go with it.

Thanks,

tt

Getting my ducks in a row for my big job search. I just bought a Dell laptop for X-mas. SM

It was used when I bought it and I want to make sure that I have everything I need to work from home on it.  The PC I'm on now will be going back to the hospital.  It is a Dell Latitude.  It has a Pentium IV processor, 512 mg of RAM, 40 gig hard drive, wireless internet plus ethernet card, Windows 2000.  Will that laptop suffice for working from home?  I assume it will, but I just want to make sure before I starting applying places.

Thanks!

I bought a desktop and laptop in December. Can I claim on taxes..
and is there a limit to how often you purchase computers for your work? A friend thought you could buy one a year and claim it.  I bought the laptop and desktop in December and already hate the laptop, but I hate to purchase another one if I cannot claim it this year. Oh, also if I charged the computers on my Dell account in December but did not start making payments in January 2006 can I still claim for 2005 taxes. Thanks.
That's strange I bought the adapter but couldnt get it to work right. Maybe cuz it was a laptop..
I'll have to try it again. I just could not get it to work right. I would get sound but then it would freeze up.
Stay where you are - it is a great deal. sm
You may see other line rates posted here, but with little to no work and other variables. You have a great company - be happy and keep on transcribing!

Best of luck to you and keep it up!
I do ESLs a very great deal sm
The job I just dumped was about 80% ESLs. Some were barely accented at all, some were fairly accented and a little challenging the first couple of times, and then there were those that absolutely incomprehensible. Honestly, after about 2 months, many of the incomprehensibles moves to the a little bit challenging category. At the end, I had one I simple could not do, not yet, but I had only had about 6 of his reports. I had one where I did fairly well and he never complained about his reports. One who complained constantly and bitterly called the office to compliment a very long report that had been done to complete satisfaction. The cardiologist who had been the bane of my existence became extremely easy for me, and I don't know cardiology all that well.

What I am going to tell you is, no I don't think that those who cannot speak English properly should be allowed to practice. The question is, how does one set that standard? When comes to MT, I am convinced that some of us have "the ear" for ESLs and that many of us do not. Even amongst those with "the ear" certain accents are still very difficult. One might be able to do Spanish speakers and East Indians well, but have trouble with Asians. Even a good "ear" is not perfect and 100% flexible.

I also believe that more and more it will be ESLs that are physically transcribed and that many of the native English speakers will go to speech recognition. This means, if you stay in this business and refuse to edit SR (I am currently one of these, but I think that will change), ESLs will compromise most of the work one sees. On the other hand, if one has a very good "ear" all of this will be fine and I am quite sure that when that time comes, the line rates for transcribing ESLs will be out of sight, relatively speaking.

By the way, ask an Englishman what language an American speaks and he will tell you "American." I am not sure who said it, perhaps FDR...We (Americans and the English) are one people divided by a common language.
That explains a great deal. Thanks for the heads up.
I unsure what the rambling incoherence was due to, but that makes more sense than just her being off her meds or something.
Yes, this is true, the posters are given a great deal
of freedom of speech on this forum, expecially on the 'Politics Board'.

Laptop works great for me
I've been using a laptop now for over a year for full time MT.  I have a Sony Vaio with plenty memory and great processor.  I attach my mouse, keyboard and foot pedal and I'm good to go. I traveled over the summer and was able to work from anywhere with internet access. A great thing!
I have both a Dell Latitude Laptop and a Dell Dimension desk top PC and bought both...
off of Ebay.  The laptop I paid $300 for had Windows XP and works great.  It wasn't wireless, but they sent me a PCI card with it and it works fine.  The desktop PC has XP on it as well and I paid $250 for it.  Both have Pentium IVs.  Both work great for work.  I have no complaints and I feel like I got a great deal both times out on Ebay.
I bought a refurbished eMachine for DD in college, works great. nm

This sounds like my kind of relationship! No great expectations and you can relax
I always have a fear of disappointing people. It has caused me to isolate myself...
I don't like Dell. I bought a Dell laptop and it

was a piece of junk, so I'm not the one to ask if you should buy a Dell.   I'd get at least double that processor speed.  My computer is about 10 months old and I have 5 times that, which means that there is probably something faster out now, or soon will be.  It is more than I need for work, but I also use computer to download music/pictures, and a bunch of other stuff.   The Dell I had had 650 mHz and it was slow and that was almost 6 years ago.   You may have to customize anyway to get XP unless you buy one previously owned, which you can also buy from Dell.   It is always a good idea to buy bigger than you need currently just to allow for updates to any software or new software you may add.    You need to also think about tech support.  I know Dell has tech support in India, which can be extremely frustrating.  I don't know that other computer companies don't offshore their tech support, but that would be a question I would ask and find out if there is a locally authorized dealer to handle warranty repairs or if you need to send off the computer.    I would not recommend a Gateway computer and I would not recommend any computer that has a Celeron processor.   They tend to be in all the lower end computers.

It is an okay deal - TR 11 font is small. Not as good a deal as Courier.
Personally, I would have to think really hard and compare reports and line counts, like the other poster below suggested, before I would jump right into it. It is probably 75-80 characters to a line +/- the single character lines you get for initials, and 2 word lines you get with op reports such as Surgeon:
IV Fluids:
Anesthesia:
etc.

It probably is comparable to 9 cpl with a larger font.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

Good Luck!
its curiosity!
i work for a national, 5 yr now. Never have seen anyones face. Have been invited to office parties if i wanted to travel a distance...

sometimes my co's personnel are more friendly than professional...sometimes not. I've had personal e/m's from a couple (QA)

I've wondered if the reality of those faces would match my voice impressions, but it doesn't really bother me to never see them. Now if they had 4 legs, i'd be more inclined to visit!!
Just out of curiosity...
What sort of home businesses are you involved in? I also have a home business I am truly enjoying, but for now I just do it as a supplemental income for the extra things. I have become a PartyLite consultant and have been doing this for about the last two months. I really enjoy getting out of my house and having shows selling great quality candles (which I love myself) and meeting new people. Hope you find another true passion and have fun doing it! Good luck to you!
just out of curiosity
why would you substitute 3 Keystrokes (sxy) for 2 keystrokes (60)? I don't find numbers any harder to type than letters, so for me this is just adding keystrokes.
Just out of curiosity...
How long have you been an MT? I had planned to take the test last summer after being an MT for 4 years, but didn't feel prepared. I'm going to do a lot more studying and take it next year. Just wondered how long you've been an MT that the test was no sweat. In my prep last spring, I discovered there was a lot of stuff I knew, but there was also a lot of stuff I didn't! That's why I decided not to take it.
out of curiosity...
where did you receive your training? I know this is kind of OT, but I am thinking of doing MT and am still researching.

You could check out the job board or search "companies that hire newbies". It returned a few entries for me that have lists of companies that hire new MTs. Good luck with your search!

Someone who is currently employed could probably help you out more but maybe that will help for a start.
Out of curiosity
What platform did go from and go to? Did that make sense?

I can tell it's Monday and my mind isn't fully in logical mode yet, lol!
I bought a wedge at Michael's for about 59 cents. Bought one for my SM
Lanier station so I could see the display and one for my keyboard.
curiosity, yeah right
and who in the heck do you think you are to tell me this isn't where i can present MY point of view???? Excuuuuuse me -- was this a gripe-only board for sourpuss' like yourself?? If so, let the administrator tell me so, and you can just go on an wallow in your self-imposed misery.
Out of curiosity, is UnitedTran the same as TranSCAM? - nm

Out of curiosity, what are the ridiculous demands?
Just curious what they might be.
out of curiosity, is this MTSO in California? NM

Now you've piqued my curiosity
What is the book about?
To all of you Escriptionist out there...Laptop question. Have any of you found a laptop that you can
thing. I tried one of those adapter that goes from the 9-pin to the USB but when I plugged in the USB my foot pedal did not work right. I know supposedly there is a help section on the escription website that says the adapter may work and how to make them compatible etc but it never worked for me. Has any of you find a solution or a laptop that this foot pedal with work with. I'd like to work while traveling and get a laptop but it never worked on my old one. Ideas??
Out of curiosity, how soon do you think they should be able to accomplish a decent amount?

I check jobs in my specialty out of curiosity.
Have only applied for three in a year though and those were to possibly replace a PT job I have with a better PT job. The FT job I have I am content with for now.

Be careful not to become known as applying all over the place. This is when it is a good time to get information from the Company board when you see an opening. Be sure you want to be considered before you apply. It is a small MT world with the better companies. This is my thought anyway.
I'd be lyin' if I said my curiosity wasn't piqued...
So, what else is there to do in this field of transcription (with a national) that isn't just a lateral move?
Curiosity piqued.....whatcha excited 'bout??? nm

You shouldn't be going off on your own to pull patient charts for your own curiosity!!! nm

anyone watch deal or no deal?

I love Deal or No Deal.......nm

Saw him on CMT show with John Fogarty. Great, great singer with a neat personality and drop dead
gorgeous without seeming to know it.
Great post. I swear by both Advantage and Frontline Plus-- both work great! - sm
I don't know about "natural" approaches for the house. I have always used flea bombs in the past before the miracle of Advantage and Frontline changed my life. Have not had a flea problem at all since I began using those products about 10 years ago, dose all the dogs religiously once a month with the Frontline Plus except in Dec.-Feb. to save a few bucks and because the ground is generally frozen by then and no fleas are scurring about. -- Hope you get flea free soon.
I am about where you are I think. There is just always something new to deal with and it just gets
worse and worse. Every new thing they implement just seems to make my job more difficult and ends up costing me money. I am thinking of just going very part time and then looking for something else. I have a feeling a lot of people are doing this.
I don't know what the big deal is.
When I've had "regular" in office type jobs, I've been subject to a criminal check. All it seems to be, however, is a standard form they send to the local sheriff's office. I had a mickey mouse job in bank operations last year, no access to anything confidential or cash, and I had to be photographed, fingerprinted, drug tested, credit and background checked.

Now that I am an MT, I am amazed at how easy it is to get hired and gain access very quickly to facilities, doctors, patients and their information. All I had to do was pass a transcription test and supply a SS#. Yeah, I'm sure the big national I'm with probably ran some type of credit check; but it was still a heck of a lot easier than getting that job in bank or any other job I've had for that matter.
Why it isn't a big deal
MQ MTs (of which I am an ex) have an option.....find a decent company who can provide a consistent work flow or just deal with MQ and quit whining!  Our neighbors to the South have no choice, not only have many lost everything they own, they have also lost their jobs.  Reflecting on THAT, those of us fortunate to have been spared really have very little to whine about doncha think??
Same here. What is the big deal?
x
Unless you want to deal with
maladjusted adult children for the rest of your life, who have very little to offer you because they can't figure out how to live a good life, if I were you, I'd get out of there tomorrow. Don't worry, you won't have to explain to him. He probably can't believe he has met a woman who would accept that type of behavior. It will not come as a surprise to anyone that you leave.

Yeah yeah, there were some good times mixed in there somewhere but they are canceled out the moment he treated your daughter with disdain. Your allowing it just proved to her she is an unworthy person. The one child who might take care of you when you get old is going to not be there for you (and believe me, you will need her).
