5 ft. tall, so her little legs always kind of "hang." I've seen on TV different recliners, motorized, with this and that feature, I keep thinking Craftmatic, but I've looked through there and only see beds. Anyone has any ideas or suggestions? I know my sweet little Mom would really appreciate it.

My recliner
Because I am not yet working in my recliner, I am not 100% sure what is going to be the best way to handle the foot pedal, but I had bought a tray that I was planning to use to hold the keyboard while sitting in the recliner, which I purchased prior to coming across the AlphaGrip, and my problem with using the tray for the keyboard had always been the stinkin' MOUSE! Well, since I won't need the tray while using the AlphaGrip, my plan is to try using it for the footpedal. I am able to change both the height and the angle of the tray, but it is pretty lightweight so I will probably have to build a "wall" of some kind or weight it down. The chair is able to recline without having the foot pulled up, so for now I just practice the AlphaGrip either from the chair I use while keyboarding or use the recliner without pulling the foot up.

I'll get there one day, hopefully sooner than later :)
Recliner

I've had to use my recliner in the past when I was having my office remodeled.  During this time, I placed my keyboard in my lap with a small blanket or towel underneath to offer stabilization without being too stiff.  For my monitor and mouse, I used a TV tray which I sat just to the right of my recliner.  I then used a small step-stool for my foot pedal.  It was just the right height and it didn't get in the way when I needed to get up.

Although I was comfortable and had everything in just the right position, I found that my recliner was too comfortable (which I didn't know was possible!) and this lead to back stiffness by the end of the day and decreased production due to the sleepiness that I experienced from being in such a relaxed position all day.

I now only use the recliner when I need a change of scenery or when I am unable to locate my desk due to excessive clutter!  I also have since bought a laptop which can be used with a wireless mouse and keyboard so my lap doesn't get too hot.  Those lap cushions are great for keeping the heat off my lap, but they also put the laptop's keyboard at an akward height for transcribing.

I had bought a tray that I was hoping to use to put my keyboard in my lap. I can't remember the name of it offhand, but it is adjustable in height and angle. My recliner sits on an old futon frame so that I can roll my laptop desk underneath and have my computer in front of me, and I set the tray up at the foot, also on the futon frame, at just the right height and angle. I have threatened to post a picture on here before, but still have not done so. I'll try to get my son to help me with that as soon as I get out from under the work I've got . . . hopefully tomorrow afternoon.
MTs who type in a recliner or bed?
Isn't it awkward to type in bed or a recliner?  Where do you put the pedal so that you are in a good comfy position?  Are you using a pedal or the keyboard for the audio files?   I am just trying to picture this?
Okay, here is a pic of my recliner setup

RE: For those of you who use laptops - where do you do most of your work, i.e. in a recliner (sm)

at a desk, at the kitchen table, etc.??  Just curious.  I'm serious wanting a laptop so I don't have to be chained to this desk

RE: Do you actually use it on your lap, at a table, etc. and if you're in say a recliner, how (s

do you have your foot pedal set up?  I'm looking for suggestion!  Thanks!

omg -- listen, get in a recliner and prop that leg up. then
you can put a small cloth over your footpedal and put it under your elbow and just lean a little on it and type! lol

i know it sounds wierd but it works! that way your foot can be elevated properly and you can still work from the comfort of the recliner!

hope that helps!
You sit in a recliner? I sit in a chaise and love it! Except, I sm
need to use a foot pedal. How do you MT without a foot pedal?
Slept in a recliner for a year before I got mine....LOVE IT. sm

I have degenerative disk disease in my lumbar and cervical spine.  We got a king sized, fully adjustable because of the level of my problems.  I rarely have had to use the adjustments because having found my "number" I am provided with an incredible night sleep.  My number is 35 and it has changed my life.  I have significantly less pain, I can sleep ALL NIGHT without rolling over and over and over in pain.  Wish I would have gotten it when it first came out.  We have had it for 2 years now.  I recommend it to everyone who asks.

Recliner/foot pedal side view
As you can see, it is not all that pretty.  The tray tended to move when I would press the pedal.  A few large, heavy bricks and two PDRs later, all is well!!
If is difficult to work in a recliner and push a foot pedal. It can
be done but creates a strain on your feet/ankles and slows you down.  I work on a picnic table under an awning when the weather is nice, but I'm not able to work as well as I do at my desk because I'm not able to have a keyboard tray and working with my keyboard on the table makes it too high.  I've even tried work in bed using a tray across my lap, but then again you have the problem with pushing the foot pedal.   You could use the keyboard for your function keys but it would really slow you down.
I would buy new a Dorland's Medical Dictionary, Stedmans Medical and Surgical Equipment...SM

and Tessier's The Surgical Word Book, 3rd edition.  Books you could buy used I would say would be Stedman's Pathology and Lab Medicine and Cardiology/Pulmonary word book.  These are all the books I use the most during my day.  You could buy other speciality word books as you need them and could probably go used with those.

I wouldn't bother with buying a drug book, new editions come out every year and I just stick to the FDA website and RXList as my drug references.

Also FYI, not a book, but I use my Stedman's Electronic Medical Dictationary a lot.  It's easier to open the program than it is to pick up a huge 30-pound dictionary.

Medical Transcription In The Era Of Electronic Medical Records
EMR has revolutionized the healthcare industry in recent times. Many experts felt that EMR & Voice Recognition would totally replace Medical Transcription - however; the industry soon realized that transcription has certain advantages over point & click charting and many physicians preferred to dictate notes rather than document the data at the point of care themselves.

I bought one from Exprescribe like that and never could get it to work.

definitely purchase something

I got a Brother fax machine several years ago at Office Depot for around $80 or so.  I later got an HP all-in-one in 2005 at Sam's.  I don't remember what it cost, but it's worth it if you'll be faxing regularly.  Some of your clients may prefer a scanned version.

You could also compare on-line fax capabilities, which seems to be more current, for obvious reasons.  I can't remember the details, but I've heard it advertised on talk radio.

Just a thought, especially if you'll be doing this regularly.  Places like the UPS Store, etc. charge a good bit to fax, not to mention the inconvenience of leaving the house to do it.

Other MTs with multiple sclerosis

Hi,

I am wondering if there are other MTs out there with multiple sclerosis and how they are doing dealing with a chronic illness and working in the MT field.  Also, are you working full-time, part-time, IC?  I have only one year experience but am considering returning to the field.

Thanks,

MSMOM

The key to multiple accounts sm
Most people are intimidated by multiple accounts but think about it, an H&P is an H&P, an OP is an OP and an ESL is an ESL, doesn't matter where it comes from.  You CAN program account specs in your mind for those you get regularly so that the specs come right up along with the dictation.  The exception would be an account that you get maybe once in a blue moon and then anyone would probably have to give their memory a little boost.  With the way work is assigned these days, it is an absolute necessity that anyone who wants to make any money needs to be able to switch from one account to another without missing a beat and it CAN be done.
Does anybody else out there take multiple antidepressants?nm

Any other MTs with multiple sclerosis?

Wondered if there were any other MTs out there with multiple sclerosis.  I am not presently working but considering going back to MT.  Before tried to work for a company that wanted set hours and with the fatigue associated with my MS that was very difficult.

Thank You.

isn't that the deal with multiple...sm
ports for extra printers, etc., and you can switch back and forth from one to the other??  I had several for multiple printers on all computers years ago.  I think that's what they were called.  I can elaborate if on the right track here, if you want.
even with her multiple personalities
you can just tell it is her. She is pretty pathetic. Makes you almost feel sorry for her........NAW!!! She has stepped on too many toes around here to be getting any sympathy.
multiple companies
you mean companies, not accounts, right? I work part time for one, one full day on Monday, a few hours most other mornings and sometimes on Sunday evenings. I work full time for another Tuesday-Saturday afternoon-midnight. Working out for me. I need the extra money.
Multiple Accounts
For those who work for transcription companies, how many different accounts (facilities) do you transcribe?
multiple accounts
So far, 7 but not all dictate heavily or daily.
multiple jobs
I actually have three... All of them are independent contractor positions, one is strictly weekends and overflow.. One i work when there is no work for the other two, and one is full time IC
Can be one specialty or multiple ......

Me too. Let me know if you find it. I will purchase it also. I also don't know whether or not
Good luck.
Need to purchase cphone
Help!  I am trying to get started transcribing at home and I have work to do but I need advice on what type of transcribing phone to purchase.  I have been instructed by my current employer to by a cphone that dials into an automated system to retreive my work.  Please, any advice or if anyone has one for sale.  The cheaper the better or I will buy used.  Thanks.
It is normal to have to purchase your own
provide the PC.  Some will provide the foot pedal if you do not have what is required.  Some companies give you the option of renting their equipment.  It all depends on the company, but yes you will have to have your own resource books.
Anything you purchase for your transcription

You might want to check out some of the earlier posts here as the tax issues have been discussed.  You would probably gain information in that respect.  Also, you might want to have an accountant/tax preparer for your first year.  Some say, you can copy the next year from that first year, but I personally believe in having my taxes prepared for me as these guys are up on things, ya' know.  Most definitely though you will want to get your own freestanding PC because down the road you may want to gain some of your own accounts, so you will need that.  You will be fine.  Some of these people act like you out to take their job or something???  Go figure.  There is always one bad apple in the bunch, right?  I learned that in grade school.  Best wishes in your endeavors....

Because of scammers, if you purchase a new pc,
and want ALL the CDs, you are going to have to make a verbal request.
Yes, you can purchase an adapter just about anywhere
that sells computer accessories, such as Radio Shack, Best Buy, CompUSA (online only now), etc.
Research and purchase best available. NM

Here's the link to purchase it
https://textware.securesites.net/order/it-order.htm

If you already have version III, you can upgrade to V for about half the cost.
Is it a program you have to purchase? nm
nm
LOL - but the poster is asking to purchase
the company provided PC?
Individual MT usually has to purchase it ..

This is not true if you have multiple cards. sm
While it's true you need to have lines of credit to show history, NO ONE will tell you to keep open many accounts, because many open accounts represents POTENTIAL debt.
I think OP meant one IC job with multiple clients...
If you are working as an IC at more than one place, you only have one job as an IC but you have more than one client. Tis true.

Same here. Very low on work with multiple accts. nm

multiple personalities (or names)
Yes, it seems she likes to change her name to make it seem like everyone is ganging up on you.......No, you are not losing it, but I sure wish she'd get lost. If we could all just not read or respond to any of her posts, maybe the she'll find it is no longer fun. That is what I try to teach my son. When someone tries to pick on you they are looking for a reaction. If they get it, it intensifies. If they don't, they lose interest. Hard I know, but maybe we can try?
Wow - I think she's wrong. It is an impression whether there are multiple
I didn't find it in my BOS-2E...I don't think you will.

Sounds like you need to get another 1-2 QA opinions and then to the QA manager.

If I buy a copy of Shorthand, how many computers can I put it on?
working for multiple companies
I was wondering if any of you work for multiple accounts, and if so how you manage your time between the two of them.  I have been trying to work on one during the day, and one at night, but its not working very well for me at this point.
