Both my kids (age 22 and 24) found jobs in their related field
to their bachelor's right out of college. Maybe you're living in the wrong part of the country. You have to go where the work is.
That was pretty funny - but I have to say that was the worst halftime show I have ever seen! nm

I'm lead transcrip for small ofc, in the field since 88, and I've found (sm)
that depending on the person, it can take up to a year. You either have to be very smart and very driven to make it shorter, or you would have to have some exposure to the systems/docs etc. It takes a longer time if you are also new to the field of MT. But after about a year, if you don't find yourself relaxing when you are at work, talk to somebody. That's long enough, and you should be finding a niche for yourself by then.
If you found an account objectionable

I was recently assigned a new account at my current employer.  My first impression of the account was lousy dictators and now my impression is lousy practitioners to the point of feeling almost guilty working on their reports.

I don't want to get too specific for fear of ramifications, but....I see practitioners who are just confused, scattered, make many...MANY...errors in drug names, drug amounts, drugs for stated conditions that are wrongwrongwrong, etc.  They forget portions of dictations or ignore portions of dictations.  They will state the patient is not available for the exam but then say to just put in the following vital signs.  It makes my gut hurt.  I won't even go into what goes on in the background at this facility but it is equally disturbing and really drains me physically to listen to their long rambling nonsense while listening to the sounds of their failings as medical professionals(?).

This is EVERY day in my workload (I am making no money on this account because of the constant re-dictating portions, mistakes, account notations, etc) .  Well....out of curiosity I did some research.  The facility has been nailed by the state on numerous occasions for errors and bad medicine and I cannot be surprised.  I half feel like someone has to do it, it may as well be me (though its not profitable....) and the other half has a feeling of 'aiding and abetting' their complete inadequacy as medical professionals.

I am curious what your take is on this.  What would you do?  I am considering asking off of the account altogether but I am afraid to say because I don't want to work with the dregs of the medical profession.  I don't want to be one of those whiny MT's who don't like this or that and want something else.  I just find this account depressing and I dread it for all the reasons stated.

I agree. I am looking to retrain into a different field. sm
I don't want to be like the textile workers in the south that had the carpet jerked from under them. The flexibility is great, but I can't feel my hnads, my pedal food aches all the time, and the seasonal work load is not so good on the budget.
Guess I found it funny since I'm in
xxx
I'm sorry but I just found that email funny...
Wow, he is going to make you some big bucks with such wonderful spelling skills. Oh boy, if they cannot even do basic English, can you imagine how they would do medical. After I laughed, the afterthought was.. how sad... these people are so desperate for work. Again, WOW
I couldn't agree with you more, they are the worst! nm

I agree. Emdat is not the worst (sm)
platform out there.  As far as the dictionary issue, that is related to a setting - the wrong dictionary is probably set.  Emdat has it's only internal "expander" function (similar to autotext).  I too hated it initially but that was just the "newness."  Emdat tech support is very good as the other poster stated - you'll always have quick access to that if needed.
Or why not hire an IC to work on the account under you? You found it
and it is your reputation and bidding that sealed the account, why not ask IC's to BID on it. You might find somebody who loves derm work and wants the money. Even if you only make 1-2 cpl over your IC it adds up.
You are a FUNNY person. I'm glad you found this board!
LOL
Feel free...Kid found it really funny when started...sm
She was a real wimp about anything (the kind that screams bloody murder for a stubbed toe and was afraid to do anything for fear of getting hurt). I finally sat her down and talked to her about things that will heal easily. We finally came down to 1 rule in the house that can never be broken: No broken necks. Lots of blood and visible bones will usually heal (comparitively easily), but they must be attended to quickly.
I agree. Worst are native borns who talk very

right, I agree, but just sharing my story so folks stay updated about the field

Ctrl + F9 adds the field brackets - F11 jumps to the field.

Worst types for me are oncology and ENT. Worst dialect
definitely Arabic, Indian, Pakistani.  No problem with Asian though.  Of course, warp speed, mush mouth American dictation can be the pits, also.
I agree unless your account follows the BOS, then of course
it does not matter what anyone thinks about it. We have to follow what the account wants, and unfortunately more and more are going with this.
I agree with Me that he was funny
I thought he was funny! I actually posted last night and said how fricken funny he was!

I almost spit my soda out from laughing. My tummy actually was hurting. If everyone had a good sense of humor like him, we would all be better off and not so darn cranky. Who needs coffee in the morning when you have Frankie Boy!

My Goodness who was posting with him was also a hoot!
Too funny!! I agree with the other girl....sm
It varies from day to day (sometimes minute to minute!) in my house.  Right now, he's out of town, so today he is darling!  LOL
I agree... whats funny though

is when there is a group e-mail about proofing work and the specific e-mail about proofing had 2 spelling errors....and the e-mail is a total of 3-4 sentences.

I dunooooooooo.

I do believe we had the same PS and WFC... when you talk about dropped letters LOL.

I don't care if they aren't typists..they certainly get paid more than me and should be way more professional. I certainly wouldn't get a job as anything if I sent a resume like that. They are supposed to set an example.. they are our *bosses*.

funny because we agree on this (children) but.....

Scribbles - We so agree on the not making the child submissive or using violent ways to get a child to behave - I'm one of the posters in that thread though with a different name (I'm the one with the 20 years of therapy experience prior to having children)....yet we so do not agree on Chavez.  It's very interesting to me that we are on the same page for one issue and on opposite pages for the other issue.

Ok, we can agree to disagree

Have a GREAT evening!!

I agree, it depends on who you work for BUT also the account
and how long it has been on VR. If it has been on VR for a few years, piece of cake. If it is just starting out on VR - tedious work, low pay as it takes longer to edit than to just transcribe it.

I have been doing VR editing for 4 years now with an account that has been on it that long also...can make up to $50 an hour, and some times as low as $30 an hour when we add new dictators.

Hope this helps.
I agree 1000%. How funny you do transcription according to BOS
and a doctor reads it and says WTF? I didn't say that! But, but my QA person wants me to transcribe according to BOS guidelines so it is not up to the doctor's wants or needs. It is a HUGE CROCK!
I agree, is this supposed to be funny? Weird IMO
nm
I agree. I found him to be very sexy. He'd always take my breath completely away!

I agree with the other posters that I found them to be a waste of time ...
I sent them a resume with over 20 years of acute care experience and they didn't even extend me the professional courtesy of acknowledging that they received it.

The archives yield posts by other MTs stating more disappointment with them after making contact than favorable results.
Too funny. I totally agree with you. Miss Hicks? sm

Was she related to Mrs. Smallwood that I took typing from in 1977? The old bitty would tap you on the feet with a yardstick if you were caught with your ankles crossed and rap the table if you were caught looking at the keys.

She'd say (very loudly) CLASS! Look straight ahead!, sit up straight and uncross those ankles!!! Then she'd get the timer ready for a timed typing and shout READY? BEGIN!! It still sends chills up my spine, but I left high school with 75 wpm and a fear of yardsticks. :)

I have very few letters left on my keyboard. That's what the 2 bumps are for.

And the numbers to be included within your text are on the top row of your keyboard(without looking). The numeric keybad is for balancing your checkbook.

I agree it is a scam to get your info. I too got one that said they needed to update my account -sm
info.  Since I have never ordered or sold on ebay I knew it had to be a scam.  I also forwarded it to Ebay at spoof.com.  I believe I got another one with a few days and I emailed them back and told them to leave me alone as I knew they were a scam because I don't deal with Ebay.  So far I have not received anything else from anyone posing as Ebay.  Good Luck.  Too bad people can't making a living the old fashioned way - earn it honestly!!!

I agree...tooo funny...first time I laughed out loud all day!
thanks!

I agree, I too doubt it was PayPal, someone hacked your account , plain and simple - sm
It can be done, especially if you ever responded to any spam emails. I had my debit card hacked at BJs, someone broke into the main frame and stole thousands of credit cards #, etc. They spent about $800 at Wal-Mart, PetsMart and for gas, bounced stuff in our checking account, etc. Since it was a VISA debit card, I had the money back in 24 hours after I filled out the fraud forms at the back. --but no one every physically stole my card or even had my PIN #. I am sure savvy computer hackers can do it , OR someone there at PayPal hacked and sold off a list---but I highly doubt they deliberately withdrew funds. I would have found out from the company that did the charge ***PAYPAL - THE XYX Co." where the mystery item shipped....doubt it was to your address.....That happened to me with a credit card, tons of stuff that I supposedly bought $800 of stuff from Victoria's Secret made its way to NY, not PA where I was living--interesting. Again was refunded promptly. PayPal may have been lax at how they handled it granted, but I am sure with a bit more persistance and going through the right channels you would have had it resolved a bit more promptly and to your satisfaction.
What is the difference between an acute care account and a multispecialty account??..nm
nm
Oh, I found it really creepy when you said you found the flowers not so skillfully arranged on your
steps, and from your own flower bed.  That's what I was worried about, having gone thru some psycho kids myself with my pups.  Someone's been in your yard and in your garden and at your door without your knowledge.  Its just creepy to me, and I'd still be very, very careful.  Especially valid sounded the other MTs warning you about potential fake molestation charges.  You just NEVER know nowadays, and these people have already turned on you big time once. Luckily (though I don't believe in luck), you had it on film to save yourself and your puppy.  You might not be that lucky next time, and the whole thing just sounds very unstable to me right now.  I know you feel sorry for the little girl, but probably the only time I have ever made BAD decisions regarding my life is when I felt sorry for someone, particularly kids.  My son even has an evil kid in his life, but one who has a million reasons for sympathy, and I was saying how we should "be bigger" than the situation and invite this kid over to play.  Thankfully, I regained my sanity long enough to remember - ever time I have done something like that on a personal basis for someone just because I feel sorry for them AFTER horrible behavior, it has always been a disaster... Be kind, but you don't have to risk your family again. Be kind from a distance.  Its sorry she went thru this horrible experience, but YOU didn't cause it, and its not really your problem.  But it could be your problem if this kid acts out in your life.  Know what I mean?
I've never had a problem switching from account to account.
The problem I had was being switched too soon. If I don't get one account spec solidly in my memory with QA feedback on mistakes before starting another, I get confused. The other problem I had with former jobs was inconsistent QA. One person tells you one thing, another person tells you another.

Lately, I don't have a problem with it. Right now, my binder has 8 account specs (some I've never had to use) and I'm picking up a new weekend job for a while. The terminology and report formats stay basically the same. It's just all those little preferences. LOL
I think I found it, found multiple recipes with the same
exact ingredients so I figure this must be it.
You're funny. Ignorant, but funny.
I don't live in NYC and I don't work out of NYC and I make wayyyyy more than $23 an hour, SandyGIRL.

I'm an employee at the largest national and I make anywhere from $58K to $64K a year.

You don't have to believe anyone but you show your ignorance by telling those of us who make that money that we're full of it.

Hahaha
Sorry, that was not an ASR funny, just a regular ole dictation funny. LOL! nm
.
Not new to the field either. Been there and seen it. (sm)
However, routing is NOT ALWAYS the only problem. Times when bonuses are out show a vast difference in dictators that are left to type and number sequence of the jobs. There are some who do cherry pick and return these jobs to pool. In a smaller hospital setting this was not so prominent because others could see it, print out a report and show the boss who would address it in one way or another.

Unfortunately, we are such big organizations now and the people in the digital rooms are just worried about keeping TAT that they don't care who does it as long as it gets done.

Then world is not a perfect place and you cannot be pleasant and assume good things will happen always. People do cheat, people do send back reports they don't make good money on.

It certainly is not the company I am distressed about, it is the few (or I assume just a few) little prima donnas who are doing this "me, me, me" thing. You can choose your company, you just can't choose your co-workers.

Until a wand comes down from the Heaven's and casts a Pollyana spell on all of us, I don't think your new attitude idea will work.
are you new to this field or are you just
uninformed?  A few months back, the AAMT subject was brought up on this board.  One single question was asked:  What has the AAMT done to help improve the pay and overall career for the American MT?  After days, I don't think there was one, single positive post to that question.  Oh, yes for sure, there was a lot of "spin" but not one direct positive answer.  Do you know something we don't?  If so, could you please share it with us?
Welcome to the field!
I've been in the field for about 22 years. Stedmans Words Books are a great resource and easy to use. Google words when you get stuck and best of luck!!! Stay away from Amherst....
another field
I often think about another field as I am tired of transcribing (going on 9 years now) and then there is asking my PS questions and its like pulling teeth to get an answer because honestly I don't think she knows and also not feeling like I'm being pay for what I feel is a hard day's work.  So maybe for me something in the beauty industry like esthetician where your also providing a service for people that want to feel good about themselves.
What field? (nm)
.
how best to get into the field
Hello. I am reading the messages about certification, AHDI, AAMT, etc and see that you have a very reasonable message. My sister wants to get into the MT field and I want to help her as much as I can. What would you recommend in today's employment outlook, for her to do to pursue this? I was steering her towards accredited schooling and the RMT or CMT, but after reading this Board, I am now very confused!
I'm currently looking to get out of the MT field too
I can see it going down hill really quick and it worries me. I don't know what I will do if MTing isnt around even long enough for me to get out of the field first. I wouldn't just go get any job though. I would need to go to school for something so I can make sure I would be making more money than I do now and have better insurance and benefits. I would love a job where I could just work 8 hours a day. Some days I sit here from 8 am to 8 pm or later just to get enough lines in to pay my bills. It sucks and I'm sick of doing it.

what is your account and specialty on the account?
no one is watching. tell us all about osi.
My MIL is the worst one too.

Her husband ignores her and every night they spend the evening with her in the breezeway watching some movie from 1950 and him watching porno in the living room.  He makes perverted remarks at waitresses, comments about the physical attrributes of every woman he sees, has made their 30-year-old daughter's friends his "imaginary girlfriends" (has pictures of himself with just about all of them and even calls some of them "his girlfriend").

Needless to say his wife has no self esteem whatsoever after almost 40 years of this.

However, she puts up with it and never says a word to him about it.  Then the nastiness comes out in other ways.  She's passive aggressive, mean, angry, frustrated and takes it out on anyone she can, which is why I just keep my distance.

Miserable, dysfunctional people.

MQ at its worst could never ever
match the underhanded and disgusting way MTs and Editor staff were/are treated at HIS.  Colleen is a disgrace and the company is up for sale.  Former managers and CEO are suing the place .. give you a clue?  Run as fast as you possibly can away from Toledo!!
here's worst!!

whatever the complaint is... the patient will undergo bypass surgery!!

What is the worst job U have ever had?
Mine was working at Wendy's - ARGH! I was always stuck on fries, and believe me when summer would hit that was NOT a good place to be - I used to come home dripping with sweat, smelling like french fries and burgers and my hair always looked severely deformed and greasy from those stupid caps we had to wear!  I never made the grade as an order-taker, I'm afraid. I used to HATE customers coming in cuz it just meant more work for meeee!
Worst job. sm
The very worst job I ever had was working in a crab processing plant. Yep, blue crabs.

Now, top that! LOL
Worst Job
Was this school in Texas? I worked for one like that and quit after a couple of months. They would enroll the students, get all of the government money they could and then these people couldn't get a job if they wanted one after graduation. It was hard to even get them internships. I think the school was probably bought out for the new Dallas Cowboy Stadium that is going in - at least it was in the vicinity of that area - you could see The BallPark at Arlington or whatever the name of it is now from the school.
