I don't know about better quality, though.  I have made a few things for people that fell apart after several washings .  How embarassing is that when you give a gift of pants and the crotch seam breaks open .  The biggest benefit I find from making my own clothes is choosing my own fabric.  I really like expensive fabrics, like silk, linen, and Tencel.  Basically, you can make the same outfit that would cost $150 in the store for around $40.  It's also great having a piece that is specifically tailored for your body.  Of course, knowing who made the piece is important, too.
