I usually just make it very brief - "This is to inform you that I will be (regretfully - insert if true) leaving (company) as of (date).  (Date) will be my last day of work.  Thank you for the opportunity to be part of the team and learn so much."


Your supe may or may not ask you why.  Usually, they are well aware of why. 


Just stay professional and don't burn your bridges.  Your resignation letter may become part of your personnel file and they may refer to it when prospective employers are checking references.
