I thought it was just me for the longest time

About 8 to 10 years ago, it was a piece of cake to make OVER 300 lines per hour after doing a bunch of doctors I'd gotten used to over a few weeks/months (depending on the difficulty of the docs).

For the past 2+ years, no matter where I work (and I've worked for a few), I'm finding that it's been a struggle to reach 200 lines (let along over 300!) an hour ... and I'm noticing that on message boards nowadays, it's considered average to transcribe 150-175 lines an hour (?).... Wow. Just wow. Didn't that used to be considered "newbie" range? Or am I mistaken?

Even when I mention to potential employers/MTSOs that my goal is to reach at least 300 lines per hour, they always sound taken aback or have a hesitancy in their voices as far as that being even a possibility!

I'm making 20% to 30% less than I did as a newbie 15 years ago. Now I know I'm getting older and perhaps slowing down, but I've been noticing line counts diminishing with using these proprietary programs these companies use for quite a while now.

I agree with hayseed and the OP of this thread.

I was the opposite. I used my old way for the longest time
because I couldn't handle the new program and the new way both at once. Once I was comfortable with IT, then I started using expansion keys and actually increased my production from in almost 20%. It definitely was work making myself learn to use them!
Have you thought about putting her in daycare only part time?
I don't know if you are able to set your own hours or not, but if you can put her in daycare for 4 or so hours a day and then work before she gets up in the morning and/or after she goes to bed at night that might be a viable option. She would get the benefit of socialization in daycare, you would get some solid, uninterrupted work time and you would still get to spend a good part of the day with her. Just a thought. When my daughter was 18 months old I began working part-time in the outside world and I truly felt I had the best of both worlds, because she really enjoyed daycare and got to socialize, and I enjoyed my time being productive away from the house and I didn't feel like I was away from her for too long. Best wishes to you and your family!
nevermind. I found it, I thought the date/time
button was for actual date and time, not the settings of the footpedal to rewind, play and fastforward. The achives of MTstars helped me figure that out!
And all this time I thought the bottom line was patient care. nm

How astute to check the turnover time, hadn't thought
of that. But, you're right, no way that's a coincidence, and your surety on this is confirmation. I'm sorry for you--that's a huge decrease in your lines. Good luck in your search for something better.
I did try the Belkin and I thought it was working but the first time I let up on my foot pedal
it just stopped and froze up my computer. I tried all of the COM ports I could think of. Today, I ordered the Dynex adapter which is the other adapter that Escription recommends and I'm going to try that. I am not giving up. I do hope that in version 8 of Editscript that really do make the foot pedals USB and get into this century. It's almost impossible to find new computers that have the serial ports on them anymore. I will update you on this Dynex adapter when I try it out now. So, for the time being, I am packing along my little portable computer when I travel. It's pretty small but it's just having to bubble wrap the flat monitor that is a pain. At least, I get to work and play. It'd just be nice if I could take my laptop instead..
longest dictation.
Mine was probably around an hour and 15 minutes to an hour and a half. The doc was awesome, best dictator ever and his H&Ps and DS were anywhere from 30 minutes to 90 minutes long. Boy I sure miss him! He was at a local hospital I used to work at.

Who has the longest-running account?
I have an account I have been transcribing since August 1997. How bout U?
Longest list of medications
For me personally it was 17 - at that point I changed doctors and finally got some relief for my fibromyalgia.  I think I bought this doctor a car, put his kids through private school and probably financed his house.  He saw me once a week for two years and very regularly after that.  I often wondered why he wanted me to come in so often and how he always found something else wrong with me.  Come to find out that I really didn't have all of the problems that he was diagnosing me with and all I really needed was help with my blood pressure and a pain management specialist (which he did not believe in prescribing narcotics).  As for work - I can't remember the longest list of medications a patient was prescribed - but in doing acute care and with the elderly patients - it was always a high number.
I think Lanier lasts the longest/best ones..sm

http://www.martelelectronics.com/Lanier%20Transcribers.htm

I also saw (if you Google used Lanier transcribers) ones going on ebay for $225 and that's cheap if they are in good condition.  I remember when a Lanier transcriber cost $600.  I use one of them but it's a long-term loaner *S*

I went through 2 Sanyo's and would not buy that brand again (one ate tapes from the outset) and I'm leery of Panasonic, had problems with other equipment of theirs that is non-MT-related.

Long-time Lanier lover here.

8 years total, longest was 4 yrs for the Q...

what is the longest you are willing to wait for check? sm
Background - been typing for a Chicagoland MTSO for over seven years now.  Invoices are sent 15th and end of month and paid 30 days later.  For the most part, invoices are received on a pretty regular basis, but there have been notable delays explained away by the Chicago Post Office is the worst in the nation. Fast forward to today; in the past two months I have received exactly ONE invoice - the rest have been delayed because of the Chicago PO or lost in the mail so stop payment (supposedly) on the oldest check and reissuance.  It was supposedly mailed 08/15 and now seven mailing days later I still do not have it.  I have sent polite e-mails to the accounting person but I keep being told to wait 10 business days before a new check can be cut.  In the meantime, college tuition is due and bank account is dwindling.  I am in the process of looking for another MTSO but in the meantime, general consensus on how long you would wait for a check.  I have a long history with this MTSO and don't really want to go the labor and wage board route but I am getting kind of fed up...I can't work for free!
Okay, let's do a poll...what's the longest dictation you've done?
I'm talking about a single dictation on one patient. Mine was three hours and around 13 minutes I think (psychology).
Longest ER exam on record! My funny for the day.

"She states she has had right-sided abdominal pain and she points to her right lower quadrant for approximately three days."

I wonder if her pointy finger got tired!!!

Bullfeathers. Americans work the longest hours.

We average 1960+ hours worked per year.  Google "Americans work the longest hours".  Nobody else can touch us.  Provide us with a link proving your theory that Americans don't want to work.  Young people want to work as well.  Every young person I know of is working on top of going to school fulltime.  Maybe it's just the people you know who don't want to work, because I can tell you that everyone in my family has a good work ethic.  Google "American youth don't want to work".  Oopsy, no hits.  Guess that blows your theory.

What is the longest you have gone without service? Do they return phone calls promptly?

Working full time at home with small children is hard but part time works great
is almost impossible. You will either have to work when your spouse is home or for only a few hours during the day and then more when they are asleep. I work part time at home and my kids (2&5 now) have done very, very well. They are great kids, very well behaved, don't get into much. I stop working to check on them/give them some attention every hour or so while I work (5 hours each afternoon or so) and they get all my attention in the morning and at night. It has worked out beautifully for us.
Yeah, our choc. lab does that from time to time - makes it interesting!- nm

Cannot legally require you to commit time to them as an employee and then not pay you for that time.

full-time in office/ part-time at home
I currently work full-time in a physician's office and have started part-time online. My hope is to eventually go full-time online; however that will be done the road for a single mom with a son in college. My suggestion would be try to type part-time for a MTSO and see how that goes i.e work and money with a decision down the road for ultimately being home all the time. A guaranteed paycheck is always a necessity for me. Hope this helps.
I work part-time hours with full-time pay...
I made over 26,000 this year...
I work a full time and a part time, but not sure about 2 full-time...
My hubbie is disabled and I am the only one in my family working also, so I fully understand. You will not have a day off at all working 2 full-time as that is going to be the only way you will get in all your hours. I work one job in the mornings from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the other from 5 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and do have off one day a week, but if I had to get in the extra 15 hours to make the other job full-time I am not sure how I would do that other than lose my only day off. Also, make sure you have your account specifics in front of you at all times because you will get yourself confused as to who is what and having notes will help in that area. Good luck to you, as it is possible, but forget about your house being clean, having any social life, etc. Feel free to email me personally if you just need someone to talk to, as I have been where you are and still am.
Maybe they will. Give it time. It takes time to set up links.
OSI, Precyse, etc tell us more.
full time, part time, statutory
newly defined full time...

newly defined part time....(which is an added classification)

I believe statutory just was not mentioned because there is nothing new about the definition of statutory.
full time/part time/statutory
The definition of full time is new.

There is a new classification called part time.

I believe statutory was not mentioned merely because that has not changed and they do not receive PTO/benefits.
I work 1 full-time, 2 part-time....nm

its a waste of time yet you take the time to respond?

**yawn time for your bed time old thinker*
Hippie??  What pray tell is a hippie?  Im not judgmental..I dont care what another is partying about or with or whom they are with..Im not a cop or the warmonger in the White House..far be it from me to judge another..You, however, by your post seem to have grown old before your time..I recommend you just graze on your back yard grass and leave us **alive ones** alone..**yawn**, time for you to go to bed now, hun?  Bye..bye..old person..
I do believe she is good enough, and has more than proved that time and time again. NM

part-time or full-time
I'm curious. Are you FT or PT? Thanks.
4 week's time or 4 weeks' time
Does anyone know this one. I will see the patient back in 4 week's time, 4 weeks' time or 4 weeks time. Can't seem to find this in any of my reference books. Thanks in advance.
1 full time and 1 part time for now
I am still pretty new, so that is all I am taking on. I may take on more after I get more experience, if possible.
I never denied that I need a break from time to time, but
I was just stating how I took her post and the fact that I am worried about how my son will react since he is already getting quite upset. But, yes, any parent SHOULD be able to admit that they need a break from time to time...we're only human too! :)
even ISPs have to do maintenance from time to time--sm
and most do this during the wee hours of the morning when MOST people are sleeping and not using the internet. They need to upgrade their services and virus protection just like the home users. This is probably what occurred.
I recently requested time off for the first time...
(3 days off) and gave 2 weeks notice but was asked by my boss to give more notice next time.  I thought 2 weeks was decent, but next time I will give at least 30 days.
Do we enter each time there is a new prize, or just the one time?

thanks.

Virtually never. Time spent doing that is time SM
that could be spent typing. Instead of stopping to listen, then typing to catch up, I scan AHEAD of the dictation as I type, looking for upcoming questionable areas.

Still going strong!
SO the little one takes up your time yet you have time?
LOL
I have side this time and time again
It's crazy how these nationals or even smaller MTSOs think that we should be working set hours as an IC or even set lines as an IC.  I totally stay away from those companies.  Also, stay away from the ones that keep you on messenger (like Advanced in Oregon) or require you be logged in their platform, etc. or require a time clock as an IC.  This is against the law.  They cannot clock you and expect you to work certain hours under an IC status.  They are getting away with it though, time and time again.  It's a shame what we MTs put up with in this profession for pennies!!!
you have no time to switch from board to board? how can you have time to look for the drug?
x
Does anyone know if you are a part time employee for 1 company and part time IC for another can you
still claim deductions for IC on your income tax even though you are one of each.
Depends on how part time the part time jobs are.
You can do it. You just have to work out a schedule you can live with.
$32K/part time 6 months/full time 6 months
I have kept my child home with me half the year, but when pre-K started I began working full time. Helps to only have a main account and one backup account for the 2nd year now, so my abbreviation program rocks and rolls when I focus.
