If you think $14 is good then you must not have been a QA person for very long

That is not good. I make much more than that per hour doing QA. Be careful too because I hear they also do not pay on time.

Good for you! You sound like a very nice and generous person and you deserve all your good luck! nm

no, you are NOT a sucker - you are a good person
There is always a story behind a story isn't there? The little girl desperately needs some psychological help and I hope she lives in a state that will provide it, if her father doesn't have insurance.

She is hurting big time.

You are a wonderful person to hold out your hand in friendship like that - I envy your neighbor. Good luck to you all.
be a good little person and get off Mom's puter

A good HR person would know in 30 minutes

I don’t think I would hold yourself as a good person
and putting God into the subject (you said above you gave to the church- I find that questionable, doubt you attend church and if you do not doing you any good)- back to the subject though- you are a devious person who probably would stop at nothing to get what they want, including knocking folks off for their insurance money.
You're a good person Paulette
and your mother is lucky to have at least one child who is willing to take responsibility and help her. Not that many years ago, extended families were the rule and not the exception. The truth of the matter is that unless a parent dies early, someone (be it a child, grandchild, or an institution) will probably have to take care of that parent (or parents) emotionally, physically, psychologically, and financially. For most of us, our parents cared for us when we were children and when they age the tables turn. I have 2 sisters who are willing to help with my mother but they live in other states and have no plans to move back to our hometown or homestate. Thus, I will be the one who becomes the caretaker.

I think you will have to sit down with your one brother (and his wife if he is married) and ask them for help that is on a more regular basis. Or, alternatively, just call him when you need him to help. Maybe he will get that hint (though he is male and hints go by undetected!).

I hope you find the relief and assistance you need. Take heart in the knowledge that you are doing the right thing.
the receipt function is only as good as the person --sm
receiving it. She is not *obligated* to send a receipt back. most people choose not to. they do not HAVE to. and I doubt her email is encrypted for HIPAA compliance.
I totally agree. He's a very good-hearted person. nm

Finally a good answer to this person's question--sm
I am always stunned at how insensitive and rude some people can be in their answers and some of those below prove that to be the case. Try to remember that not everyone is like that, although it seems to be otherwise sometimes, on this board. Best of luck to you in whatever you decide to do!
It irritates me no end when a person who supposedly has good sense
to act like a horse's behind. I have tried explaining to an elderly relative I do not put a physician on a pedestel like they do because they are not almight and some downright ugly. The 1 you speak of has no "bedside" manners- the nerve of him! I had a physician tell me 1 time-after giving his word and then rescinding- only your word against mine - I then reminded him of my father's saying- a person is only as good as their word. Erks me big time.
Sounds like a good indicator of a domineering person
Probably best you avoided her, even if she is good.

The top talent isn't always worth all the fluffing it takes to get them to sit down and do their job! lol

Oh good grief! No way. The only Dixie I know of is a forensic medicine person...
not a former bank manager.  Maybe there are 2 of them.
How long do you give a new job before you decide it's not a good fit for you? sm
(Also posted on Company Board)

My saga follows. Please go to the bottom of post for my question :)

I've been with my current company as a PT emp. for 2 1/2 months. Everything about them seems to be quite fair, not great, but very fair. I'm still on hourly pay of a whopping $8.50 till I get my production up. Therein lies the problem, I cannot EVER see getting my line count up with the inordinately excessive number of ESLs on my acct. It's just ridiculous. All I'm asking is to actually TRANSCRIBE for a living, instead of rewinding and relistening 1000 freakin' times a day.

I've never gotten the feeling that I'm being taken advantage of or given the crap work, I just believe I'm on a very high percentage ESL account. I don't mind doing ESLs, I really don't. I just want more understandable drs thrown into the mix.

This is my first job after graduating and I was lucky enough to be hired for acute care. I'd like to continue in acute care. I just want to be able to PRODUCE, improve and ENJOY my job. I want to be doing MT work for many years to come.

I'd just like some opinions from those of you with more experience about what you might do in my situation.

Also, how long do you give a job before you decide it's not a good fit for you? Am I giving up too quickly?

This keyboard good if you have long nails....sm
I'm a former typing teacher. I used to use an ergonomic keyboard because I had the fake fingernails. It is actually easier to type on this kind of keyboard with longer nails. Now that I am back to biting them down to bits of nothing, I use a regular keyboard again. You can get used to it pretty quickly if you keep at it, though.
I think it is a good rate as long as they offer
health benefits.  Sometimes it is best to leave work at work, then you find you have a homelife unless of course you do extra from home.  Good luck to you!  $15.00 is mid in my area with the average being between 13-17 dollars per hour.
Oh, goodness! Soak him in the tub for a good long time.
Try a little dish soap on it.  I wouldn't advise any harsh chemicals because you don't want to risk a rash or anything.  Tomorrow's picture day here, too.  My kid decided to rub his blue ink hand stamp on the center of his forehead instead of leaving it on his hand.  The teacher stamps their hands with an ink picture stamp every day if they're good.  A sticker would be better because my son always has ink on his hands and face now.  Lots of soap, then maybe cover it with makeup?  Oh, goodness.  My cheeks hurt from laughing at this one.

As long as it takes, to quote good old Dr. Phil!

You're both worth it - go for it!!

Good answers and becoming a skilled MT takes surprisingly long, but SM
although 5 years may be about average, there's an old saying about how some people have 20 years' experience and some have one year repeated 20 times. If you want to cut that 5 years down VERY substantially, work full time (a conscientious full time, not just slopping thru the day) and push for new work types and accounts as woon as you've milked the old ones for all you can learn from them. Plus, a reality is that availability of the Web as a resource now helps people function at a much higher level earlier than previously.
Lucky. I love long reports. I thought I got a good one, but it was a 1.5 minute
report with 12 minutes of dead air. Sit here and do nothing. For free.
I work for the person. I know. Very excellent person, personally and business-sense.
It is an INSULT to have QA hovering over seasoned MTs who know what they are doing. She trusts her MTs and again if there are questions there is one person, a trainer, who can answer them via phone, e-mail or instant message or you can send the whole report to them if you choose.
Point was is the person willing to make up for the slack of the person who types 1 job when there is

if that is all they WANT to type.   Is the person who wants to be a supervisor willing to make up for those people?

You have crap supervisors, editors and mts in the business like you have good ones.   Sadly, the really good ones of all of them are few and far between.

When you have a QA person that is picky and another QA person that is very lenient where does that
leave the MTs because some are getting a lenient reviewer and others are getting one that picks at everything. How do you reconcile that issue with the difference in QA mentality. Some people make out well and the other people could be just as good but dont. I wonder about that.
The person MTSO pays is the person who

Good of the company? As IC, I am my own company. Not my problem if she has problems as long as I do

I hate Instant Text. It is expensive, long long learning
curve, and too much distraction for me.
One person's "custom" is another person's
"house arrest". I'd never go to the Middle East because of how they treat women. I don't agree with their laws or "justice" system. For example, the woman who was gang raped as punishment for the actions of her 12-year-old brother, a boy who wasn't even an adult. How's that for a "custom"? Let's not forget bride burning. Burqas.

Besides, foreigners don't follow our "customs" when they come to this country. Half of them don't even bother learning English. Instead, we're expected to pay for healthcare and foodstamps for illegals and print everything in Spanish.

I won't be oppressed or treated as a second class citizen, and I wouldn't treat others like that either. A "custom" is more like putting up a Christmas tree, not being abused based on your gender.
i'm sure it will vary from person to person.
I recently did the same thing and am loving it! The freedom from time clocks, the better company, make losing the benefits well worth it to me. You need to set up a plan to have $ set aside for taxes though. I should have done this years ago!
Wrong person. I'm not the person you were
any money.  You have a sucky attitude, a "poor me" attitude.  Get off your lazy whiny a$$ and work instead of complaining and you will make money.  I have one account at 10.5 cpl, two at 14 cpl and one at 15 cpl.  I make a lot of money, even on the 10.5 cpl.  But I'm not sitting around whining either.  And I didn't whine when I made $6 an hour.
How long should I wait after applying for a position before I follow-up. It has been as long as two
without hearing from some.  Just wondering if I should send an e-mail to follow-up to see if they received my resume or not.  I don't want to offend anyone but feel two weeks should be long enough for someone to at least acknowledge my resume and that I have applied for a position.  Right now I would accept anything even a note saying no thanks.  Any advice would be appreciated.  I haven't had to apply for a job for the past 10 years so I am a bit rusty at this.  Thanks again for any advice.
Congrats! How long have you been a MLS and how long did you study for the test!

Please see message. I have three daughters with long, long hair.
I also have long hair down to my waist and my three girls have hair that long too. My daughter brought them home from school last year. I was devestated and grossed out!!!! I have never had to deal with lice. Anyway, we did the treatments and two of my girls broke out in a severe rash with the OTC stuff. Their little heads were so sore!! I thought I was being meticulous with eggs, only to find them hatching again down the road. A nurse at the pediatricians office suggested I try oil to suffocate them since my girls were allergic to the lice solution. I bought a huge bottle of veggie oil and dumped it on all three heads, plus my own. I then wrapped the heads in platic wrap and then a towel. I left this on for 30 minutes. It takes a while to wash out the oil, but we never, ever had the lice or eggs again!!! If you try this, make sure you put on an old shirt and put a towel around your shoulders. Obviously we were desperate, but we all have such long hair and very thick hair so I was willing to try anything. And I figured there was no chemicals involved so that was pretty safe. And it sure did help my littles ones since their scalps were pretty raw from the solution. Hope this helps and Good luck!
It's been a long, long time since I've used a C-phone, sm
but I do think jobs can be paused.
I had a problem with this for a long, long time sm
I have always worked days, like from 6-3. Over the last few years, it didn't matter how much sleep I got, I became real groggy between 7 and 11. Really shoots the day. Talked to my doctor and he said my blood pressure pills were the culprit but he refused to change me to another brand or dosage since I have multiple aneurysms (2 in the brain). My BP has been stable for a long time and he wants to "keep it on the low side". I tried taking them before I went to bed instead of early in the morning, but then I had headaches all day. So, I am changing to a night shift for a few months so I can sleep when those pills kick in and so far it is working pretty good. I stay mostly awake during my shift and die when I hit the bed from 6 am to 10 am, then I lay down again later in the afternoon for 2-3 hours. I still get 6-7 hours of sleep, it's just split up during the day, plus I am mostly awake now when I sit down to type. I don't have to deal with the heat in my office, either. It tends to warm up real fast in here with the south sun on the house and 2 pc's running all day, even with the air conditioner on.
Way back when, a long, long time
ago and in a galaxy far, far away, I had my own accounts also and some years cleared $75,000.  Yes it can be done, but you need to have your own accounts.  Also lots of delivery, and other duties involved.  I work for a large national now and make much less, but I got tired of accountants, having to deal with hardware problems, deadlines, driving deliveries, printing, printers, etc.  So I decided to simplify my taxes and stay home and just type.  Don't have to worry about computers either, because the company will just send me a new one.
Long, long files. Seemed like they'd never end! I'd never go back to VA again. nm

I've been doing this a long, long time...

I used to make $70,000 and up a year and did so for most of the late 80s and 90s (one girl used to make six figures a year working 7 days a week!)  Because we were making more money than the supervisors and Medical Records Directors in hospitals, they began to switch to transcription services which were sprouting up all over the place.  Plus AAMT came into existence and even though in the beginning it claimed it was to fight for transcriptionists (although assured us it was NOT a union), they eventually morphed into an organization that was more management friendly.  They developed the "guidelines" and the 65-char line.  That was the beginning of the end for those high-end wages.  Then all those mickey mouse transcription schools popped up, and now outsourcing overseas.  YES, we're complaining.

Been in this biz a long, long time, 30+ years and....sm
I love/loved MTing. However, things have changed so much during these years. The job definitely gets easier; don't have to look up much, can decipher ESLs much easier, in other words, you get pretty comfortable with things and you have confidence in yourself. The more experience you have the easier the job, but....

I actually made more money 10 years ago!! We didn't have speech recognition and you actually got paid for headers/footers, demographics, carbon copies, etc., you got paid for what you did fairly; today, I am not so sure.

You will feel burned out at times, but that passes and you find you like your job again.

Good luck to you!!
A long, long time ago, I was going thru
a really bad time emotionally and physically. I was suffering, and my transcribing suffered. I assure you - if you are to the point of not paying your rent, literally, and needing food stamps, there is something else going on in your life than current transcription rates. We are all in this industry and many are thriving, most getting along comfortably. If you are literally to the point of food stamps, you honestly would be a fool to continue. I blamed it on my job, on my line rate, on everything but the honest truth that I was ill and was NOT working as I should or could. It is a really sad thing that you keep spreading this propaganda that MTs in our culture are doomed and now destined for food stamps. Food stamps are not something to toss around lightly, as you would know if you ever had to use them. Please let's not be quite so dramatic. Again, if you are really in those dire straits, you really need to face that MTing is not the fit for you, personally, and do something about it rather than blame our industry. You dwell on the past, but we can't do that. While you may have made other wages 20 years ago, may I remind you that we were pounding away on IBM Selectrics using layers of paper and bottles of white out, going crazy trying to rewind tapes over and over to get that dang word, with no idea what an Expander was. Technology is fantastic. Things have changed, but things are still great in this industry, and in this world. Those who change and can adapt will be fine, but you need to recognize that most of us are not ready for food stamps.
Sure did...you been around for a long, long year

That is a good offer. Pay is not that good at UIMC. Good luck! nm

The one person I know who his doing VR....
isn't filling in words, she's having to reconfigure and restructure to the entire report, to the point it would be much easier and faster to just transcribe it.  And over several months' time, it hasn't gotten one iota better.  I'll believe the "fill in the word" editing when I see it.
like the person below said------

no friend of medical transcriptionists for one thing

and when I met her my only thought was well that must have been

the personification of Marian the Librarian.

I would have thought she'd have retired to a garden pruning weeds by now and gotten her extremism out of our lives.  But no such luck.

This person cannot
do anything unless he has a document that was signed by your daughter indicating that he loaned her money using the motorcycle as collateral.  To get this person to leave you alone, you may want to have an attorney give this person a call to pose this question (regarding signed doc).  I have had a situation occur, not necessarily like yours, but I needed an attorney to write a letter in order to cease the situation and the attorney only charged my $50.  The letter took care of the problem.
This person (Taz) is
a perfect example of what I just stated.  This world is going to hell in an elaborately decorated hand basket.
So one person (YOU) is MOST MT's?
I make more than you do anyway and I left MT so LOL yourself and good luck finding a job in 5-10 years when this one goes the way of the mule skinner.
wonder if it's the same person?
From VA?

QA person here(sm)
I QA by cutting and pasting the error; preferably as much of the sentence as I can so they at least have an idea of what I am correcting and why. I also cut and paste my corrections. I also give them hints on how to research, including links.

I'm not sure that (d) up there sounds very nice. New MTs CAN be taught a great deal, but to have that "edge" on them only scares them more. I've been on both ends, as a beginning MT and as QA. I remember the feedback that helped me most and it was often delivered in a friendly helpful manner, no warning shots, etc.
