so its cold here! Actually it broke the 15, the night before we left for Disney on a Make-A-Wish trip for my daughter Jenny....(we had a blast)...got back 2 days ago, it broke again that night (21st). DH got it running again, but the heater guy disassembled it last night and has not returned yet to put it back together and fix it. Luckily we have a propane fireplace or we'd be in big trouble, still chilly though especially since it goes down to 25 at night, brrrr!---so any $$$ if we are included or entitled would be wonderful...but I doubt we will get so lucky since it was so long ago that I was a "member" of AOL. Guess I will just have to work even more to pay for the repair, fun.

I went back in house and love it. I love not being
secluded. I was working in my PJs, less organized and feel much better now that I get up and dress for work and see people (even those in traffic aren't so bad anymore). I find that I have more of a life now, and my family says that I spend more time with them now.
Working at home served its purpose for a long time; I was ready to go out into the world again now that I have no little ones at home.
Got $$$$ back last year but this year
I have to pay them, sold a property I never lived in but I had enough sense to set aside $45,000 so just waiting on them to send me my WT2s so I can get started.

Brother-in-law has been using outside wood furnace
for many, many years and loves it. It sits out back of their house less than 50 feet (I would guess) from their back door. They also cool their house with it (need an exchanger of some sort) and heat their pool water. He is pretty clever and worked out the plumbing for the pool by himself. They do have to spend part of their summer looking and cutting and hauling their wood supply but they think it is worth it. Hope this helps.

I saw them in concert about a year back...
It was at a venue that was tiny, compared to most places anyways. They were on a stage that would spin around. It was so intimate and probably the best concert I have been to. The opening band was awesome too, Lennon. It was mostly just her playing the piano and singing. Awesome, awesome time. And, this is coming from a 26-year-old who loves them! lol

In my area both the RN-AD and dental hyg. programs have wait lists, however the dental hyg. wait is like 4 years versus the RN wait being 1-1/2 years. I am just finishing up all my gen eds and I should be off the wait list and into the core program next fall. I am taking extra psych classes to fill my "elective" courses as I was told that hospitals prefer nurses with their BSN to have psych minors, and I'm only in the AD program (associate degree), but I can still list extra psych courses on my resume. I wish you the very best of luck!!!

Limit use of Electric Space Heaters
Here's a few opinions. There's one way, way, way down at the bottom, too. Hope it helps.
Limit use of freestanding or in-wall space heaters to short periods of time. Electric space heat can cost as much as 25 percent more than fossil fuel heat. Because of the high energy required, the use of extension cords with space heaters is not recommended. Also to avoid fire hazard, electric heater power cords should never be placed under a carpet or rug to be hidden from view.

Space heaters are a fairly inefficient way to convert electricity to heat. They can also run up the electric bill, and I'm not sure they're a good choice for the apartment-building lifestyle. However, if you owned a big home and controlled your own central heating, a space heater could be a good choice. If you spent your entire day, or most of it, in one room of the house (say, your satellite Grist office), you could turn off the central heat and use a space heater. And, of course, space heaters are a great option for rooms where there is no other heat source whatsoever -- certainly better than frostbite.
Space heaters run on electricity generated by burning something or splitting atoms or capturing hydropower or tapping into the energy of wind or sun (optimal but unlikely). Radiators run on water heated by burning oil or gas. Because your radiator burns fuel on site, odds are it is more efficient than your space heater. (Again, we're guessing here, since we don't know the specifics.) With electric space heaters, about two-thirds of the heating energy from the original fuel is lost during transit to your room.

Q: A couple of issues ago you talked about electric space heaters. Are they less
expensive than gas?
A: Maybe. Unless you have a geothermal heat pump, electricity
is not the most economical way to heat a home. But
depending on the size of the electric space heater and how
you use it, you may be able to increase your comfort and
save a little money this winter.
There are two basic types of electric space heaters;
Convection heaters heat the air and usually have a fan
to blow warm air around. Radiant heaters warm objects.
Some people like to feel warm air move so they use a fan
driven heater. Others will use a radiant heater to avoid
drafts from moving air. The cost to operate the heater will
depend on wattage, temperature of the room, and length of time
it’s on. The higher the wattage, the colder the room, and the
longer it’s on - the more it will cost.
A 1500-watt heater will cost around $.10 an hour to operate.
Your much larger gas furnace may cost $.45 - $.75 an hour to
run. To be comfortable yet not spend more money the trick is to
save gas by turning down your thermostat while using the electric heater. If you just
use a portable heater for short periods, and you turn down the thermostat at the same
time, you should be fairly comfortable and save on your heating bills. Check back

Q. Would it be more efficient to use an electric heater for one room than to keep the whole house warm with central heating?
A. I can see why you would think using a space heater would be an energy-saving solution, especially with higher gas and oil prices. But in Vermont, electricity is still the most expensive way to heat. A typical portable electric space heater could actually increase your energy costs by as much as $50 a month.
A better approach is to make your home's "envelope" and central heating system work as efficiently as possible. Make sure your home has sufficient insulation. Prevent air leakage between indoors and out by sealing any holes between the house and outdoors or the attic, especially where chimneys and plumbing enter. Gaps around door and window frames and drafts under doors should also be sealed. Repair cracked glazing on windows and replace weather seals if necessary. You can find low-cost, easy-to-use weatherization kits and supplies at your hardware store. Be sure your furnace filter is clean, seal and insulate heating ducts, and have your furnace or boiler professionally inspected, cleaned and tuned each year. Vacuum or dust heating vents and move furniture away from them so heat can circulate. Finally, close doors to any rooms you don't want heated and turn down the thermostat in those rooms.

I live in the Midwest and am bracing for the high cost of heating my home this winter. My question is about buying/using a space heater. Is there a way to find out if running an electric space heater would be cheaper than the gas I use to heat the home? Is there a formula for this? How would I figure it out. I've taken all the other precautions such as insulation, furnace tune-up, weather-stripping etc. I figure I can keep the heat turned to about 67 - but a space heater might be good for the family room-kitchen, the area we use the most. Cheryl appears to be serious about reducing her heating bills. And, she's right. According to the Federal Trade Commission, nearly half of our utility bills goes to heating/air conditioning. So controlling those expenses is worthwhile.
Cheryl can compare heat generated from gas or electric. To get a fair comparison we'll determine the cost to generate 1 million BTU's of heat with both fuels.
A furnace with a seasonal heating efficiency of 80% will use 12.5 therms to produce the million BTU's. MGE (Madison Gas Electric in Madison WI) was charging consumers $1.50 per therm in October, 2005. We'll use them as our example. At a cost of $1.50 per therm heating with gas would cost $18.75 (12.5 therms X $1.50).
An electric heater would consume 293 kilowatt hours to produce the million BTU's. At a cost of $0.11 per kWh (also from MGE) that's $32.58.
So heating with electric is more expensive than natural gas. And, that's usually the case since a lot of electric is generated by burning natural gas.
But, Cheryl's recognized that gas vs. electric is only half of the equation. Could heating a smaller area (kitchen/family room) with a higher cost fuel (electric) be a good idea?
In our example electric generated heat is 70% more expensive than gas generated heat ($32.58 / $18.75). As long as her kitchen/family room area is less than 30% of the cubic footage of her house she'll save money by using the space heater to heat it and turning down the thermostat on the furnace.
Remember that this is just an example. We've made some assumptions. For instance, furnaces are measured based on their AFUE rating (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency). It's also known as "seasonal heating efficiency." We chose a furnace rated at 80% efficiency. Cheryl's could be more or less efficient. That would affect how many therms of gas are consumed.
The selection of space heaters will make a difference, too. There are a number of types available.
According to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources a radiator-type heater could be best for Cheryl. It works well in a room that gets constant use. And, since the surface area isn't extremely hot, there's less danger of someone (think children) getting burned.
There's also a formula that Cheryl can use to figure the cost of running a space heater. She'll need to know the size of the space heater in watts. Divide that by 1,000 to get kilowatts. So a 1500 watt heater is 1.5 kilowatts.
Multiply the answer by the number of hours per day the heater is in use to determine how many kilowatts are used per day. Suppose that it's running from 8am until 10pm. She'd multiply 1.5 kilowatts by 12 hours and be using 18 kilowatts per day.
Her electric bill will show how much she pays per kilowatt. Let's use our $0.11 rate. The 18 kilowatts per day multiplied by $0.11 costs Cheryl $1.98 per day to run the heater.
Make no mistake, the furnace is the most efficient way to heat the entire house. But, according to the National Association of Home Builders the average home is 2,200 square feet. That's a lot of space to heat.
And, if you'll study your home, most homes do not have someone in every room 24 hours a day. Each family has a pattern of use. One or two rooms might be in use for much of the day. Other rooms rarely are used except for sleep. Cheryl might find that she can lower the thermostat on the furnace to 60 degrees and use space heaters to raise the temperature in occupied areas.
Chances are that a lot of us don't want to go through all the calculations. You really don't need to. If you only have one or two rooms occupied, it will almost certainly be cheaper to keep your thermostat lower and put a space heater in the occupied rooms. Just remember to take the appropriate safety precautions when using space heaters.

Upshot? There WAS memory loss happening. It was not due to hormones. Middle-aged women were SO busy and SO stressed and had SO many things on the brain and things to do and places to be and things to remember about spouse, kids, job, parents, extended family, that they were STRESSED TO THE POINT THEY COULD NOT REMEMBER IT ALL! Bah on the hormone theory. We just get full up to our eyeballs of all the things we have to do and something has to give.
Like, spelling the word school or something. No can do, school does not exist in this brain any more, it got kicked out so I can remember to pick up beer on the way home!

I'm 46 and I went back to school this year full time for a BSN...sm
I was worried about because, let's face it, my short term memory isn't what it used to be LOL. Plus the program is ONLY full time. They had 1000 applicants and picked the top 70 of us. If you didn't have a 3.5 GPA, you didn't get in. But I am doing really well in school - after I got past the shock of the first 6 weeks - tons of work- and I am at the top of my class. My husband, bless his heart, is doing all the cooking and we are basically kind of ignoring the dirt. My house will be clean again another day. I am finishing up my second semester, have 3 more semesters for a BSN, and then another 2.5 years to get my masters and be an advanced practice nurse. 41 is definitely not too old! You will have to work smart to save your back but it can be done. Also MT is starting a slow slide out...you would be smart to start your second career now while you still have a job... IMHO

I've been with MQ since 1998 when they
employer. Oh, I bitch and gripe about MQ on occasion, but I'm still here. Why you ask? Because it's stable and I feel secure here. I get paid on time each and every time. I always have work. I don't make much money though, but it's all my own fault. I have a decent line rate, but I zone out and waste time. I'm working on that ::smile:: Don't ever be afraid to risk trying MQ or be scared off from it. A lot of people leave MQ just to find themselves right back regetting having left in the first place.

I do have the halo around lights at night but it's not so bad I can't drive etc. I do think it's about time to go get my Lasik redone as my vision seems to have gotten a bit worse again, but definitely worth it and SO much better than glasses or contacts!

Yes, I lost 42 pounds on LA Weight Loss, but gained back 50 a little more than a year later . .
I was on the program for approximately four months and lost 40 pounds. The weight did come off really fast. At the time I was a member, there was a rebate if you kept the weight off for one year. It sounded good, but you had to buy the supplements for the entire year, which by the end of the year added up to a few thousand dollars.
In any case, after I finally lost the weight, I got pregnant with my fourth child. I am now trying to lose the 50 pounds that I gained while pregnant, but my metabolism seems so much slower now. The weight isn't coming off nearly as fast as before. :(
I love it, my pay has gone back up to what
I want but just have to keep it on fast forward and go as fast as possible to make a pretty good salary. The salary for me will not be as it was in the past but then again have slowed down voluntarily as just tired of all those long hours, resting more and living off the fat of the land.

I have degenerative disk disease in my lumbar and cervical spine. We got a king sized, fully adjustable because of the level of my problems. I rarely have had to use the adjustments because having found my "number" I am provided with an incredible night sleep. My number is 35 and it has changed my life. I have significantly less pain, I can sleep ALL NIGHT without rolling over and over and over in pain. Wish I would have gotten it when it first came out. We have had it for 2 years now. I recommend it to everyone who asks.

Then threw up approximately every hour from 10:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. Christmas morning. Not the Christmas I had planned, up cleaning bodily fluids all night. Somehow Santa managed to come overnight, too. My husband, me and the 2-year-old didn't get the bug until last night, it's vicious! Hopefully that's all over now and we can enjoy the rest of our vacation!

Yes, you sure do! We have sold since 1998, I believe. I'll never forget my first negative.
I sold a collectible PEZ angel dispenser. It sold for like $200. I had a hard photo, as in like a photo we developed from Kodak. My husband and I were SO excited, we nearly fainted. We took the thing to a professional packer, can you imagine? Back then, nobody sent packages - know what I mean? Maybe only sweet grandmas and mothers with kids at college! So, we paid nearly $20 to have this professionally packed, shipped it insured for $300, etc. Well, the buyer got it and claimed it was smashed to pieces. UPS investigated, and they are REALLY fair about this stuff - the box was unblemished - perfect condition. Because a UPS rep had packed it, it was packed to perfection and their specs, so they refused to give the guy a refund, and told us that he was a scammer. Back then in the early years of E-Bay, scammers would buy collectibles, get them shipped, and then return a broken/damaged one they had laying around already. Bait and switch! And many buyers got bullied into giving them their $$ back. So this guy went NUTS on us, demanding the $200, which was long gone for groceries! Plus he was lying, and UPS said so!! Well, he left me the most scathing negative. My very first feedback! I cried and cried and cried. Wrote to E-Bay, wrote to the President, wrote to my mother - nobody cared back then and feedback was NEVER removed no matter what. I'll never get over that first negative. Now its a scam - if you get a negative, you basically go to that company that E-Bay owns - not safe harbor - something else - the name escapes me, but they even "guarantee" some sellers. Anyhow, you go to them and basically pay $10 to $20 and your negative gets miraculously "removed"...So, even feedback really isn't reflective of the truth anymore...My husband still sells, but my heart just isn't in it anymore. He uses the $$ he makes for buying more junk to sell! It keeps him amused and out of trouble, and he's happy if he has $20 in his pocket (not much $$ in the MT world anymore!)....

I've gotten these kinds of emails numerous times and it steams the heck out of me.
I LOVE my wide screen. I will never go back. That being said....
I had to do some tweaking of the settings. I went to START, display, and then the setting tab (far right hand side). I have my screen resolution set on the 2nd notch from the word "less" on the left hand side. That is my home monitor.
For work, I have the same resolution setting and then, because we use Chartscript.NET, I can set my resolution different than the default and I set it at 105. That seems to work best for me.
I have also tried maximizing and minimizing the window sizes too. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't. I think you need to tweak your settings until you find the one that works best.

I got nothing out of being a part of it except that it looked good on my evals to be part of an organization, but the raises I was getting didn't justify the cost. I have thought of getting certified, but see no reason are looking at it for a long time.
Reasons I was told to get certified is that you get hired faster if you are certified, especially by the outsource companies, but I do not seem to see people very happy with any company so I will continue to work fo the hospital I do. Plus, the outsource companies are sending work out of the country to get cheaper laborers and are not interested in paying top dollar for certified and competent transcriptionists.
To get hired for hospitals, etc., they are also tightening their belts and I will go with a good non-certified before a certified Transcriptionist and pay less.
This "AHDI" has made themselves "self-proclaimed" association for MTs. I could start one today and if I had investors to get it organized. We have the Joint Commission setting what is acceptable and making the industry unified in the way things are done and that overules ADHI anyway. I think someone is making lots of money off already poor MTs!

Things in this field have changed for the worse over the past years. Salaries have decreased, yet expectations have risen. Benefits are contingent upon production, yet a good share of the time production can't be met due to complications outside of the MT's control. When it comes to taking the losses due to changes in the field such as offshore outsourcing and technologic advancements, it isn't the clients or the service owners taking the major hit. It's the transcriptionists. Yet AAMT has done NOTHING to help the transcriptionists in general. In fact, it has gone out of its way to PROMOTE offshore outsourcing and even to change some of the guidelines in the newly published, amended BOS to accommodate voice recognition and other technology geared to replace the MT or relegate transcription to other forms labeled "editors", which in reality involve retyping whole reports or major portions of reports at a cut in pay, of course.
All anyone, newbies included, needs to do is to look at the history of the medical transcription field, see the changes, and then see how much AAMT did to promote the worth of the Transcriptionist in this country. The depressing message isn't coming from those speaking against AAMT, it is coming from the consequences resulting from the actions of the AAMT. One fact alone can depress a newbie, and that is to look at the average line rate in 1995 compared to the average line rate now in 2005. Thank you, AAMT, for promoting that.

Their latest pitch is to the MTs STOP transcribing verbatim. So not only will we have to be language specialists, we'll have to put a doctor's words in "proper English." 
It doesn't matter what the docs want. It's what they want. Baloney. They are not our boss. Our docs are our bosses. If the docs want verbatim, that's what they'll get...at least from me (except for the JAHCO list of unacceptable terminology).
I'm so glad there are hospitals and doctors out there that don't give a hoot about AAMT. I sure don't. Oh, and if anyone noticed, usually buying products through AAMT doesn't save a dang nickel. In fact, you pay just as much, if not more, for the same products you can get by dealing directly with the company that makes them till all is said and done.
I'll save my money and spend it on more important things.

I'm interested to find out what benefits you actually get and use for your money, and if any employers are at all interested in the fact that you are a member etc. It's not a inexpensive prospect to become a member, that is why I wonder if the benefits are worthwhile to the working MT.
