Encourage your child, do not demand or demean.  Your child will tell you when he is ready to be potty-trained, because it will be easy for you and for him.  I am not saying you won't have accidents or a few issues, but if you are constantly doing laundry and he is having accidents, then he is NOT ready.  Making a child feel wet and ashamed is not the way to potty-train.  I too was anxious as my first child, a boy, did not potty train until a little after 3.  My wonderful pediatrician said to me - Have you ever seen a kindergartener with diapers?  Be patient and encouraging.
