Out of her dress today (instead of out of her dressing) but I caught it when proofing.

Wow, no disrespect at all, but you call that "rebelling"? You're very lucky! When I was a teenager in the 80s, I dressed in "punk" gear; however, I was a straight A student, didn't smoke or drink, and was basically a "good girl" - that was just my way of expressing myself. I personally see nothing wrong with letting teens dress to express themselves even if it is in a way we personally aren't crazy about (unless of course it is obscene or too sexy or involve lots of piercings). Wearing lots of black, dying and cutting hair in "alternative ways", things like that I believe are basically harmless ways of kids expressing themselves and, like your daughter basically pointed out, showing their individuality. You really need to look at what is going on INSIDE them instead of on the outside. If all is well on the inside, don't worry so much about the outside. They'll outgrow whatever fad or trend they are experimenting with. I did.
dressing in black
Don't worry about it. My sister wore black for 15 years when she was teenager and throughout her 20s; one of my nieces starting wearing black when she was in junior high. The niece is an RN and neither of them has ever done anything weird or satanic in their lives.

Some people love black - personally, I avoid it like the plaque, don't even buy black shoes or purses.
Dressing for an Interview
When I was in a class at college that helped you to prepare for getting a job, women were to wear a suit, jacket and skirt with white blouse, and guys a suit and white shirt and tie.

I realize this is just an interview at K-mart but I have heard of others landing a job partially because they made a great impression by dressing up regardless of the position they were interviewing for. My brother was one of those people that did this for an auto parts delivery man position and they told him how impressed they were with his attire. So, I really do think it makes a big statement and difference a lot of times.

Wishing your son the best of luck! I say dress up the best he can, present himself professionally, and he will be more apt to land the job. :)
Dress him like a smurf
*********
I don't care how they dress.....sm

I know that customer service is sorely lacking, especially in bigger cities (forget what they wear) - where they act like they are doing YOU a favor instead of realizing that we, the customer, are THEIR BREAD AND BUTTER.  Customer service has been sorely lacking in central through S. Florida for a long, long time......it's really sad.

There was a program on TV recently, think it was 20/20 (not sure), but it was about HOW AMERICA GOT SO RUDE....and 20 minutes of this show was spent on cell phone usage.....and I concur.  I believe the cell phone, while necessary for some, is the bane of the world.  People became incredibly self absorbed and don't you just LOVE the people waiting on you in any customer service who CHAT ON THEIR CELLPHONES while they are waiting on you?  Or who do their jobs with their cellulars attached to their ears on personal phone calls while working (not emergent phone calls)?  It's nauseating.......

I don't let my kids dress like that! My son will wear
anything I buy him, usually athletic attire, like Nike or Addidas T-shirs and carpenter jeans that fit!

My daughter likes jeans and t-shirts (kinda tom-boyish). So, I am lucky in that regard.

If they were difficult, they would never be allowed out unless they dressed properly.

I have a fit if my daughters shorts are too short. You know, how they roll them at the waist and the shorts go up their butts - well, that is a no-no to me. I don't care where we are in public, I pull them down to a normal length. Other than that, their dress code is fine.

Teenage dress problems...

Okay, I hate to ask this, but I  need some unbiased opinions.  My almost  18-year-old high school senior has of late been dressing in a lot of black.  It's not weird stuff at all, other than a couple of camisoles that I'm not wild about,  and she always wears a jacket with those.  The thing is, she's happy, outgoing, going to school without trouble, doing her  homework, happy around the family, planning her future, doing her own laundry, keeping her room clean, everything you could ask for.  She calls us when she's out and keeps us posted where she's at, and works very part-time at a drug store.  Her hair isn't dyed, she's not wearing weird make up, and isn't doing the  weird jewely like dog collars or any of that.

But  it bugs me!  When I ask her she just says that she doesn't want to dress like the typical Abercrombie crowd.  She does  have some tan pants and a colorful sweater she wears here and there, but she really does love the black primarily.  I'm a worry wart type and am just worried this will escalate into the look I spoke  of above.  She swears she's not interested in tattoos, piercings,  or any of the rest of it.  Should I  just back off and leave her alone?  Is this uncommon or just typical teenage "testing  of the waters."  She's never rebelled in any way  before.

Teenager dress problems

My oldest graduated last year and started dressing in black (mostly black t-shirts and jeans) in his junior year.  This drove my DH absolutely crazy and still does!  We never had any trouble with him in school either; good grades, part-time job, never ran with the wrong crowd, always called to keep in touch when he was out, etc., just like your daughter.  We let it go.  He never wanted any tattoos, collars or piercings (although he did buy a bracelet with the metal points once.  He never wore this to school however.)  The biggest problem we ever had was the kind of music he liked to listen to.  We did forbid him to buy certain types and bands after we listened to them, but he didn't argue.  He is now in college and is doing great.  His grades are high and he still checks in a few times a week just to "talk."

If I were you, I would let the clothing thing go, as long as it doesn't change into anything concerning.  Most teens need to express themselves somewhat and this really seems pretty innocent.  My DH and I are really pretty conservative.  We found that it is best to pick you battles. There are certainly a lot more horrific problems out there to be concerned about than dressing in black.  Your job is to just keep an eye on things and if you see any drastic changes in her (grades, personality, friends, etc), that is the time to step in.  She seems like a well rounded young lady with a good head on her shoulders.  You seem to have done an excellent job in raising her.  She will soon be a legal adult and you now have to start trusting her judgement.  I think she will be just fine!  Good luck!

Don't get me started on them - I'm thinking of dressing up for Halloween

Turkey stuffed with cornbread dressing....

dress in black and ugly jewely

Bowtie pasta - Zesty Italian dressing,
small bits of sharp cheese, raw broccoli cut up, and tomotoes cut up in tiny squares! So easy and delicious.

Sometimes, I throw a little bit of pepperoni in there for spice.
Guess I'm a killjoy 2. Just never really enjoyed dressing up in costume.

where do you live? Sounds like the dress code in Florida

Ha ha! But will you start dressing as tacky as Dog and his horrible wife? Yuck! ;)
nm
rich skanks dress better and have nicer cars and homes.

Hated it. The office politics, the dressing up, the back-stabbing. I do in 4 hours what I did in 8
at home.  That hospital environment with all those women backstabbing, worrying about how long other people took for breaks or lunch, who was in favor with the supervisor, who fit in with the cliques,  UGGGGGGHHHHH!   I can't believe I am saying this but MQ looks good compared to those days now that you got me to thinking.  (Not that good pay-wise/benefit-wise though)
The only person that bothered me at my wedding was the one who wore a white dress. Black is fine.

proofing
I don't always but I probably should. Just got feedback from QA that I had chosen wrong account number for date of service. OOPS!
Proofing
The problem is typing faster and faster, you have more potential for typos, etc.  If you reread everything, you make less money.  I would rather work hourly so I could put out a much better product, but  not possible.  So I don't proof, except as I go along, and briefly glance over my finished report.  Otherwise my production would be cut in half.
proofing
15. per hour without benefits.  Still looking for a company with benefits.  For VR, I wouldn't take anything less than 6 cpl as they nearly have to be retyped.
proofing
Sorry, that should have been docs are dictating, not transcribing. Whew! Eyes are tired!
proofing
The biggest significance for proofing/reading is that when someone uses a macro/expander and it expands out to another group of words than what was intended and the MT not catching it. I know of this happening at a local clinic, and the doctor was furious when it came back to his office obviously wrong because the MT didn't take the time to check over what her macro expanded to!
proofing
I proof as I go. However, it takes a long time to be comfortable with that. You could try to test yourself and do a lot of reports in one day proofing as you go. If you have a way to put them on hold you could go back and check behind yourself just to see how you did. Big time saver but you have to be really focused and really sure of yourself.
Proofing
I was just proofing and caught where I had typed "acing" instead of "aching" The spell checker did not pick that up. I'm not here to pick apart what you do, but I would certainly recommend proofing your reports. Good luck to you
Proofing
Tinks: I do pay attention as I type, but I always go back and proof. I guess I am too anal! Also, I think it depends on the person and the account. I just don't feel confident enough (even after over 15 years!) to let mine go without giving them a once over. I do agree too that MTs in the hospital setting are not scrutinized as much as those of us working for MTSOs. So much for my 2cents worth!
proofing
I have over 30 years experience, and I still proofread everything I do after it is completed. Having done QC for many years, it is easy to spot those of you who think you can proofread while you are transcribing - the quality just isn't there. Please remember that this not only puts your job in jeopardy but also the jobs of many others as if your employer loses a client, everyone who does that client is now also losing work. More emphasis on quality, less on quantity. If you can't make enough money, try another job; don't complain about, sacrifice quality and make transcription profession look bad.
RE: MDmt and proofing
I agree with you 100%. I spellcheck and then visually proof. My QA ratings are 99-100% on a high-ESL account. I want to say to people who are too lazy to proof: IF YOU DON'T HAVE TIME TO DO IT RIGHT, WHEN WILL YOU HAVE TIME TO DO IT OVER?
Proofing as you go...as in looking at what you typed?
Doesn't everyone? Or do some MTs watch TV or look up in the air while typing? LOL! That is not proofreading - proofreading is double-checking a finished document.
I have just started proofing as I go...

and yes, it does mean no more watching TV while I type ,but I am so pleased with the increase in my production per hour.  There is actually life outside my computer room....

I did have to change some of my Expanders that I consistently type incorrectly, i.e. "or" and "ro" for rule out, but after watching it for a couple weeks and not having any of my reports returned, I am pretty confident that I must be on the right track.

I also keep working on refining my templates to add every possible phrase that the doctor uses so some reports are almost an editing process rather than typing.

Exactly, really can't catch when proofing as you go.
Think about it, you are thinking, listening, typing, foot pedaling, etc., too much going on at once. Not to mention other distractions. Really can't proof as you go, just doesn't work. You have to stop at the end to concentrate and re-read it to catch all the errors. Trust me, I do audits and find errors in probably 8 out of every 10 reports, some very small but still errors. These are most likely from MTs who proof as they go. I totally understand MTs are paid on production and don't blame them one bit for not proofing at the end! But then also should not expect a perfect report or state that proofing as they go works, cause it really doesn't. Ever hear of a writer say oh you don't have to proofread or edit my book before publishing because I proof as I go?!?! Just some food for thought. ; )
they no longer pay for proofing
Just kidding.
I know, I know...
Proofing is very important. Patient care is at stake.
And so are our jobs.

Trained someone by proofing (sm)
She listened to every report, word for word, and she is now one of the best MT's I know.  That would be an excellent way to train.
Proofing Problem

Lately when I proof my work, I don't remember typing things near the beginning of the report and thinks it is something I forgot to remove from a macro.  Then I have to re-listen to that part to verify; wasting time.

I didn't use to do this and don't know how to stop. - Any tips?

Anyone have any good proofing tips?

Does anyone have any proofing tips/ideas that they use when going over their own reports?

I always, always go over my reports at least once after typing them. Sometimes, though, I will read the sentence like it should be, instead of noticing that I left a simple small word out or something simple like that. I type a lot (and I mean A LOT) of 20-30 second reports a day  lol..and towards the end of the day is when I notice it happening.

I do this on VERY rare occasion and but am just looking for some suggestions.

Thanks!

I forgot to mention proofing
You're right! I forgot to mention that proofing takes less time. You'll have less to correct, and you should be able to proof as you transcribe.

You can take advantage of those annoying pauses in the dictation if you use them to proof the line above the one you're working on. Even in a tiny pause, you can proof a little bit.

Good luck with this! Let me know how it goes for you.
Per minute editing/proofing rate
Can anyone give me some good numbers here?  For editing, if you are paid by the minute of dictation, what would be a high and low pay rate per minute?  Thanks for any help on this!
Proofing Help Pleeeez! (long post)

I am 53, divorcee with 1 child in college,  been MTing for 32 years. When I started out I was one of the best in my field, accurate, at my peak was making close to 50,000 a year, only one job and only 40 hours a week.  Now, here I am going through menopause, working 12 hours a day (1 full-time and 1 part-time) and barely making ends meet.  My production is at an all-time low, and I'm working on my 3rd or 4th job this year- I forget, it's been so many, for various reasons why they didn't work out.  But, now I find myself, going into my third week of employment with this company, still in QA, making stupid grammatical errors, and leaving out words, that I am not aware of. I would like to say one of my problems is that this is a huge Children's Hospital with a lot of procedures, diseases, and terminology I have never heard of, but I cannot really say that, as most of my errors are gramatical, i.e. not putting comma or semi-colon where it belongs, leaving out it, and, but and they.  I am beginning to feel they may not keep me.  I am 1 pay check from being homeless, now jobless, already uninsured, as I could not afford the Cobra.  I have applied for jobs completely out of the MT field, so far with no luck of being hired.  I put in an application last week for a State Job with excellent benefits, paid by company, and although the salary is 22,000 to 36,000, if they call me, I am definitely going to take it.  I figure I have 15 more years before retirement, and if I can tap into the retirement for the next 15 years, that would be a help, as I don't have any 401K to fall back on.  Anyways, if you guys can give me some proofreading tips that will not take away from my production, I would greatly appreciate it.  Most companies don't offer a training pay that would last at least 2 weeks, which would be a help.  So here I am trying to make money, which is virtually impossible when you're training on a new account, new company, new software and everything.  Help Guys.

Okay... do they no longer teach proofing your document before you send it?? (sm)
PRINCIPAL DIAGNOSIS(ES): Left food wet gangrene, status post above-knee amputation on.

Actual copy and paste..... I have no words for this at all.
Okay... do they no longer teach proofing your document before you send it??
Maybe some few isolated case...
I see you are caught in

already.

In some offices you continually run out of work - and MQ gives you

no policy in writing as to what your rights are or what they will

provide in the way of "buffer".  All they do is say "we can give you more

accounts".

Well, sitting in front of a computer 24 hours a day and still not finding

enough work on dozens of accounts is not being a good business

person.

Having an account or else built in protection for times when there is no work

is BEING A GOOD BUSINESS PERSON.

Even if you are an employee, and there is no work, suddenly you find you

are RESPONSIBLE for the huge medical insurance bill - for several pay periods "because you didn't meet your line requirement"

I'm telling you, this company needs to either standardize it's politicies and

be up front with what they do, or forever go through the system as being

utterly slippery and underhanded, and deserve the reputation they so

deservedly have right now.  Of course they have their own agenda and could

care less about posters like me who have been through the drill until I was ground

down into the ground and broke, because they are "using" MTs to position themselves into the world of VR.  And it will have been done on the backs

of many MTs who lost it all thinking at some point MQ would finally "do right"

They haven't and probably will never.

So my advice is, if you can't get some policies in writing from whereever possible

(New Jersey just flips you off, so don't waste your time there), don't invest too

much in this company as you will be at their mercy and feel like you are never on solid ground financially.  It is not a company to work for if you need the

money for a living.  It is merely to pick up pocket change.

What caught my eye was sm
"it's a teaching hospital". Been there, done that. Get ready for ESLs that change every year. You might like it, but you'll earn every cent. On the plus side, you'll learn so much more than with a nonteaching hospital, which is good. Let us know what you decide.
AVG has caught several
viruses. I also run online scans on sites like Trend Micro, Panda, etc., on occasion just to double-check the effectiveness of AVG & make sure it hasn't missed anything. I've been using AVG free for about 10 years I guess and, like I said, AVG has caught several viruses and I've never once had a crash or lost anything in all these years due to viruses, and I've turned all my friends and family onto AVG free & they've never had any issues with viruses, so I have to say that I'm extremely happy with it, especially considering it's free... Doesn't get any better than that! ;)
HELP with Shorthand. Suddenly today when I tried to start work today.sm

my ShortHand would type only the first letter of an expansion and then take all the letters away!  I checked and the Type It button is grayed out!  I have restarted the computer and looked on the Shorthand Help menu but can find nothing that applies.  Can anyone please help me ASAP?  I am lost without it!  TIA

Perhaps you are right. This one is dated today. The original article was on Yahoo today also with

But this article states it would only affect new customers right now.  So I am upset over nothing.  I went through heck with BellSouth when they charged me a surcharge of an extra 50 a month and then would write a letter saying I had to switch to a long distance service and pay by the minute because of my "excessive" use. They told me the unlimited charge was for an average of an hour a day not somebody who worked out of their home and I needed to switch a business plan at over 200 a month charge.  I switched over to cable because of that and then to read that cable was going to charging on a per use fee and not a flat monthly fee it upset me.  It is the nature of our work, VR, only paying for VBC, having headers and footers taken away, now being charged for being on line, etc.  It just seems that everything is done to keep to insure less money.

Absolutely, because if they are caught twice, they've probably done it

Maybe I caught him at a bad time or maybe he is
going through some personal problems in his life that he is carrying over into the workplace.  In any event, I could not foresee a good working relationship with this individual in the future.
You are offshore and got caught.

Missed most of it but what I caught was fun!!
