Question about CMT and VR

There's a push by some MTSOs to get the CMT certification, but my question is this: Would it really be feasible for the MT to spend all that money on the test along with time/money for continuing education credits for recertification if VR and electronic charting are the future for MTs?  If all we're going to be doing is reading and correcting for less money and everyone is adamant about the "writing on the wall", why are some MTSOs encouraging CMT status? Is it smoke and mirrors or will it hold more weight in the future?
