She was hired as part of CBay's corporate social-responsibility experiment, and although the program reflects only a tiny corner of a vast industry, it has turned up an unexpected truth: Blindness seems to infuse the outsourcing transaction with a warmth and a mystique that the sighted often fail to see, almost as though outsourcing were made for the blind.

"It's our advantage, this imagination thing

Where's the company's corporate social responsibility to this country.........this just burns me up.......

now we know folks......is this ridiculous comment suppose to make those of us losing our jobs feel better?

"outsourcing was made for the blind"

makes me wonder how good an MT you are when it comes to detail. goodness
I've not been following as closely, but she always seems collected...sm

Did she recently have a break down, and what did she say?

no dear - look closely - it was for you-nm

This career is so closely related to "parenting" that they are one and the same, really.
How many other careers are based at home, or have been as long as MTing?  The poster was given a lot to think about, but unfortunately in the beginning the majority being negative about NOT trying to keep baby at home and work, or having baby NOT a reason to be an MT. Of course its the #1 reason for most women to be an MT! Its the dream job of any women who wants to be a mom, but cannot afford to leave the work place. Its not like the OP was asking for opinions on Wal-Mart versus McD's, was it? Kids needn't even be mentioned in all other careers except ours, and as from her post, it was for her baby!  And then to have these mothers(?) who discourage her from being with her kid? That's preposterous, and a recommendation like that could only come from a failure of a mom. Sorry, but true.  Even if I was a failure at it, I would still encourage another new Mom to try and be there for her child.  I would encourage her, unless, of course, I felt GUILTY for my own actions...and didn't want to have a reality check.  So, defending parenting does not make another MT negative! Puhleeeeeeeeeze!
Since when is this career closely related to parenting??????????? (sm)
I got into this initially because I was tired of the daily commute, the office politics, and everything else that goes along with working in an office, which everybody here knows. I also have friends that want to work at home for the same reason, and none of them have kids. So, please don't assume that everybody who wants to work at home only does so because they want to be at home with their kids. Yes, that is one reason, but that is by no means the only reason.
It's scary because you have to watch it so closely. In my case, sm

it seems to get better after I reboot, but I would really like to know why it happens in the first place.  I have 2.5MB of RAM on my computer, so I don't think lack of memory is the issue.  Hope someone has some insight!

I do. I've worked closely with these people for years,

If you know it is a new paragraph, then by
all means make it one. If she does not like the way you are typing them, she will be sure and let you know.
do paragraph, then scan over it
I listen as I go along also.  It really gets to be quite easy.  To reread the report definitely would cost money.  I do a paragraph or so and as the doctor is shuffling papers or gathering his thoughts, not really dictating, I scan down the paragraph to make sure it is okay.
LOL! I love your last paragraph and sm
isn't it the honest to God truth!
Your first paragraph I agree with.
From then on- no. It is not our fault that healthcare costs so much. I can remember (telling my age here) when an office visit at the local doctor was $15- a physical was $30. The last time I went the total cost, including paying the lab separately for interpreting, was almost $400. Medical care has become big business like everything else. The problem is that MT's are not considered as part of the team in the way that nurses, physicians assistants, etc., are. Doctors would never get away with not paying benefits for the rest of their staff. Oh, they would if they could. Your last paragraph is true in the sense that if she cannot find what she needs she may have to CHANGE her career. The good work may be out there, but there is certainly not enough of it to go around.
Or a whole paragraph! Yes, I have actually cussed out loud!
We should get paid for this! It is our time and money!
It's this thread, 2nd to last paragraph (See Inside)
Quote from original post:

*It means no more benefits as an employee and I can't get health insurance on my own, but I did without for 15 years before that. I'll have to be an IC, but I have two IC positions and between the two is going to be more than okay financially and with taxes. Plus, I think I am going to have more time because I am not strapped to my desk for the same shift hours week after week. It should allow me to pursue a master's degree and have a life. *

You clearly state you are going to be an IC. Keystrokes does not hire ICs. I'm not picking your post apart; it's just the inconsistencies are pretty obvious and I'm more confused now than I was originally.

I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering what the heck is going on with these 2 posts that contradict each other.

SM for stacked versus paragraph form.

Stacked form would be:

PHYSCIAL EXAMINATION:

VITAL SIGNS:

HEENT:

NECK:

CHEST:

Paragraph is :

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION:  VITAL SIGNS:  Blood pressure 120/80.  HEENT:  Head is normocephalic... etc.

Hope that helps.

Ctrl+E centers the line or whole paragraph. nm

Helpful for me was to turn on paragraph marks (sm)
I was told that those are the "containers" for all the formatting codes. You can't see them, but sometimes if you have a tricky formatting problem, you can copy and paste a paragraph mark from one place to another and it quick-fixes problems.

Having the marks on there takes a little getting used to, but it didn't take long.
Is SOAP format always in paragraph form? *sm*

or is it common to transcribe headings within a SOAP report? For example, a SOAP report with a PE section?

Thanks in advance!

In IT, a paragraph is always in entry screen (from Wordpad). How do I get rid of this 4ever?
dd
Can't you change it in Format/Paragraph/Line spacing like
s
Disgusted, your last paragraph is so true! Thanks for voicing it out loud! nm
nm
Actually, it does check the body of a paragraph, but not the last sentence of a document....what'
.
The ones that I hate are where the doctor dictates a full line or paragraph,
and says, "No, wait, go back, change that."  Then you have to delete everything you already typed and retype the new dictation.  Some of these newer doctors do that to nearly every sentence.  By the time you finish the report, you've typed and erased half the report.  Do we get paid for that?  NO.  I don't get it.  We still have to pay for doctor visits if they misdiagnose us, then we have to pay for the subsequent visit to fix what they didn't diagnose the first time.  We should get paid by them for typing what they said, erasing it and retyping what they meant to say.  They're getting our wallets coming and going.
Chars aren't counted in gross lines. If you have a 4-line paragraph...sm
you have 4 gross lines, no matter how long or short the sentences are. A heading on it's own line is 1 gross line. A signature on it's own line is 1 gross line. The date at the top of a document on it's own line is 1 gross line. Anything on a line going from margin to margin is 1 gross line, no matter how few or many characters, or if there are spaces or not, even if there's only 1 character on that line like 'A' for instance. Does this  help? :)
You can set Word to not count blank lines by changing your paragraph style
to automatically double space after the paragraph.
ExtText by Dictaphone -- Word 2000 - won't capitalize when making a new paragraph or after lists?
Hi. I am new at a job. The Word 2000 running in ExtText (Dictaphone) will not capitalize at the beginning of a new paragraph (never had that happen before), nor after numbers in an automatic list, and sometimes even just after plain periods, not just periods used in numbers (like hemoglobin 7.5).

What is going on? It works fine in the Word version on my computer, but when it ties with ExtText, it "forgets" to capitalize. It is especially annoying with lists, and also at the first of paragraphs, I never had to babysit that before.

Any help? TX
In 12 years of MT'ing I've never re-read an entire chart. Edit/read as I type. nm

Yes, I read your post, and I just re-read it, and I've copied and pasted for you in case

you've forgotten your own words! Your post above is 100% different "flavor" to it, now all positive and cheery! Your first post was 100% doom and gloom every which way, including "raining on your parade", and "if you want to go forward"...God, sounds like she's talking about jumping into oncoming traffic! Here is your quote:

My first boss (the one who hired me as a new grad) gave me some words of wisdom that I haven't forgotten. She said that transcribing at home with small children NEVER works under any circumstance. Either the work will suffer or the parenting will suffer.

****

How can the word "NEVER" in caps be interpreted in any positive way? You took about 8 paragraphs to cover every aspect and completely dash this poor woman's dream.  I'm not blind, I'm not talking about day care at all, I'm talking about the total negativity of your original post! You know exactly what I'm talking about, cause you added some sugar to your second version! And that's much nicer than the first!

Oh I've read that site and continue to read it...sm
I agree...much motivation there. I have tried to quit numerous times in the past and did successfully quit when I was pregnant for the first time many years ago but I have never managed to summon up the strength or resolve to stay quit. Thus the "need" for a financial investment in my efforts. It somehow makes it more motivational to know that I have $$$ invested in this effort over and above the $$$ saved on cigarettes.
Who had time to read?LOL I only get a chance to read This Old House once in a while. (nm)

I didn't read the other posts but just read this
My daughter got pregnant at 17, said she wanted an abortion but BF didn't. I have a wonderful 2-1/2 yo grand daughter that I don't think I could live without...and now, guess what? I don't. I have custody of her. She was dropped off on my door, I got court ordered temporary custody and final custody hearing in a month.

I'm single with no family support. I had just taken a new MT job one month before this happened and they have been wonderful during my adjusting to being a mom again and I hope I can resume a normal schedule by next week.

I'm passing no moral judgments or giving moral advice. The situation is what it is. My prayers are with everyone involved.
Definitely an eye-opening read. Having my teens read it, too. nm

Yes she did. Read over and over.
Go have dinner and read again.  What's your battle or issue with poster.  It's an OPINION!
Read a few more

If you are the transcription supervisor I would strongly advise you to please review the reports carefully - do this around the end of the first month or second month. The reason I say this is because for the first few weeks an outsourcing company will QA just about every report so that it looks great, gains the confidence of the client, etc. I have worked with many, many hospitals as a consultant and notice this to be the pattern.

After you have found the multiple mistakes, bring these up to the administration and ask to have a deduction from the bill.

I have had to point out to a few hospitals that use the overseas transcription that they are putting the doctors at malpractice risk. One hospital even ended up paying the outsource company $262 for the month because they had so many mistakes in the transcription and each line that had an error was deducted from their original bill. You can bet that company did a turnaround the following month with nearly no errors. I'm not afraid to tell you the company - CBay.
You need to read up on how (sm)
perverts select their victims.  They don't just assault randomly unless they are planning to kill you afterward.  They specifically target those who they think will not stand up for themselves or children who have nobody to stand up for them!  Your pappy there has had permission from both his wives to assault others under their roof and he is going to get worse if you don't stop him now.  He's not senile, he's not demented, he is a disgusting pervert who has been molesting children his entire life!  No "mother" would allow this sort of thing to happen to their child, and it doesn't matter if you are 5 or 55!  Do you REALLY believe that his own children were not molested?  The only reason his daughter didn't admit it to you is because she'd have to tell you the gory details and didn't want to have to go there, much like you don't want to tell your family something he SAID to you.  I guess if you're that worried about what your "mother" will think, then go ahead and get felt up for the rest of your life, but I sure hope you have the good sense to NEVER take your children over there!
You only read what you want to..
I don't advocate welfare for life no questions asked, but geez, louise, this is America, the richest country in the world and we have children who go to bed hungry!!!!
You need to re-read
Listen up! What part of re-read the darn posts didn't YOU understand?

People have been complaining on her for weeks about "oh I hate having so many accounts..." or "I have too many accounts and can't remember each profile" or "I already have 6 accounts and I don't want anymore"

Take off your bifocals, clean the slober off your monitor, and scoot your big old butt close to the screen and re-read the posts from several days ago!

HELP! Where did I read this? (sm)
JAAMT or Plexus or other???     It was an article about AAMT's position in dropping the possesive form of an eponym and how other organizations were following suit (like AMA). In other words, not to type Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease, but Alzheimer disease and Parkinson disease. I meant to copy this to have it readily available (doctors don't seem to have read this explanation yet). Thanks!
See, the way I read that was...SM
The poster was saying "Hey, better to have an occasional drink than to wind up on antidepressants" - which, even when taken EXACTLY as prescribed, can really mess some people up.
I have never taken a job from there, but I just want to read it to keep -
ahead of what is out there and who is looking for what as far as jobs. What I did notice though, and I absolutely love that they did this, is that you cannot see what anyone else has bid. you used to see what everyone was bidding and it got to a point where people were putting down that they would do it for free just for the job and experience!! C'mon. How fair is that.

I agree with you on paying - I don't want to pay Guru a part of my check, that I am already under bidding on, just because the job was posted there.

It means intake and output and you don't put an apostrophe because that makes it possessive. You also don't use one for words like TMs and so on.
Not just re-read but...
That's called re-casting the sentence and would not be permitted with TRUE verbatim transcription.  My dream is to one day type EVERYTHING just as they say it, including "BEEEEEEEELCH", or 'Hi Joe, how's the golf came?" etc.

That may be true, but again, please don't let a bad reputation of one company put you in a negative mindset of the entire Network Marketing Industry.  It's the same with medical transcription.  If you look at these boards, you'll find that there are some companies with very bad reputations, and yet there are some very good ones out there.
I have and am doing it.....please read
I've been in this industry for several years.....and I never said that ANYONE should take my advice, I was simply giving my opinion and having a conversation.  If Network Marketing is not your cup of tea, then that's cool.  But I along with several other people I am associated with do make a nice living at it.  Please understand, I am NOT defending those companies that truly are scams or the ones that make you spend lots of money before you even see a dime.  I was just saying that not all companies are bad.....and that personal development is a good thing to do for yourself.....nothing more and nothing less.  Have a blessed week!!
