Really need help

I had to buy a new computer.  My 'old' one just quit.  So of course the new one is loaded with Vista Premium.  I have WordPerfect 12 that I've been using and put it on the new computer.  I can use it just fine but it won't let me save anything.  I have work I need to do and return and I can't get it to allow me to save at all, not on the computer or to a jump drive or disk, etc.  Does anyone have any clues if I even CAN save and use WP12 with Vista?  I know nothing about Vista at all.  I have Word 2003 that I loaded on and it automatically updated it to 2007 and that's wonky too.  Any thoughts are SO appreciated.  I've gotten hardly any sleep for two days trying to figure this all out.  On top of that, my printer is a parallel port and the computer is USB of course, so it won't fit.  HP says they don't make a cable to adapt because they can't guarantee it will work.  I'm just so frustrated and really worried about getting my work back on time. Thanks for any help.
