Service owners/cherry pickers

Why do service owners never seem to notice cherry pickers? Even going to great lengths to deny there are any in their group?

To all you CHERRY PICKERS...This one's for you!

I have been struggling all morning transcribing STAT reports that are OUT of turn-around.  Not to mention that these STAT reports are dictated by the worst ESL I've ever done.  Meanwhile, everytime I go in to grab a new dictation, I can't help but notice a certain CHERRY PICKER grabbing up every current report dictated by the best.

So if there are any cherry pickers out there bold enough to answer my question, could you please just tell me why???  What gives you the right?  Do you not even realize what you are doing to the rest of us?  Why not just join in and divide the misery for a while so we can all have a decent line count at the end of the day?  GRRR.

Thanks for letting me vent...

Cherry pickers
This has always been a problem in this field unfortunately, when I first started the work was assigned to us but with technology changing, it started to be work pools and the bad dictators started coming. Unfortunately the people who cherry pick are only hurting themselves, yeah it may be good for the paycheck but it is not helping their skills and one day, they will be the only one on the account for one reason or another and their production will take a real nose dive. We had a a person do this continually on one position I had years ago and eventually the supervisor started routing the bad dictators to her for a week or so and believe me, the cherry picking stopped real fast.
What do you do about cherry pickers

How do you all deal with cherry pickers on pool accounts where there are several MTs working on the same account?  What I mean is, some MTs take the best work, even when it's not the next work to be taken, leaving the worst dictators for the ethical MTs.  Any suggestions?  (Talking to the MTSO doesn't seem to help, even though they have rules against this.)

cherry pickers will stll be around. I for one am and can do SM
ESLs, Neurology, Cardiology and Ops. When I'm on radiology I cherry pick since I get paid by report and do just fine :)

FIRE THE CHERRY PICKERS
They ought to track down your email and find out who you are and fire your arse!!!!
tank the cherry pickers

Cherry picking sure hurts the hospitals because they are waiting on these reports and if the cherry picker skips over, then if no one else is on-line, its gonna take a while to do those reports..so it hurts the hospital and the trans service..and the patient, which is supposedly what we are all about..LEGAL ACCURATE MEDICAL RECORDS..I cant believe that a cherry picker would even post here..I would be too ashamed to admit that I shaft my coworkers, the hospital and trans service I work for..

Cherry pickers should be FIRED!!
If your co-worker was any kind of a true MT she would grow up and do whatever came up in her q. Tell your supervisor! I wish I knew this idiots phone number. It really ticks me off when people cherry pick. You have my sympathy girl.
Cherry pickers really make me angry! SM

I work at-home for a fairly small community hospital.  We have maybe four ESLs on staff at this hospital.  We all have the capability of looking up what reports are on the system and we are allowed to self assign provided we do not abuse it.  The powers that be decided to allow us to have this capability because on second shift and weekends there may be occasion where a report is needed stat and there is no one in the department to assign it and so the person needing the report can simply check to see what MT's are on the system typing and email one of us and we can self assign and do the report.

I usually work first shift, but this week I am filling in for another girl and working second shift.  It is me and one other MT on second.  I plugging along and I get rather lengthy consult by an ESL doctor we all kind of dislike doing because A) He is an ESL dictator and B) All his reports are looooooooong!  So, I get an 8 min consult and I type it, takes me about 20 minutes.  Then, a couple of reports later I get another consult, same dictator, 10 minutes long.  Now, I'm thinking okay what's the other girl doing.  So check on her and she is sitting on the same report she was on when I got the first 8 minute consult.  Her report is a 4 minute H&P by a very American, very good dictator.  So I type the second, 10 minute consult, with just a little irritation nagging me.  A few reports later I get yet another 15 minute consult by the same ESL dictator.  Now I'm steamed.  I look at the job list again and find that she is STILL on the same 4 minute report she has been on for the last hour and a half!  Presumably she has been waiting for me to clear out all the offending dictations so she doesn't get stuck with one!

So now I'm considering letting the supervisor know because it just burns me up when someone treats their co-workers so unfairly.  If she's doing it do me, she's done it to everyone.  But I'm afraid if I gripe about her to management, they will simply take away our self-assign capability and take away our ability to see what is on the system and I hate to penalize everyone because of one person's self-serving and unfair attitude.

What would you all do?

I totally agree! Thanks to the cherry pickers...
there are days when all I get are 100% ESLs. It's so bad, I practically have a foreign accent by the end of my shift! Seriously, this has a huge impact on my income. Race has nothing to do with it. Just trying to pay the bills!

I will do everything in my power to have cherry-pickers fired
because it's not fair to the MTs who do give a ____. I owe it to the good MTs to not let the sorry ones get away with it.
Do any of you who continuously get the reports that cherry-pickers pass over ever

This entire morning I have gotten nothing but leftovers from yesterday that no one else wanted to do.  I am at the point where I am going to start sending them back, too, so I can make a decent line count.  Whatcha think?  Then no one will be doing them and maybe the MTSO do something about it (ha ha ha ha ha).

Anyone want to share what companies allows cherry pickers? I am in between jobs and looking ..
I do not want to work for a company that allows that..
A question for cherry-pickers and rule-breakers
If there are any cherry-pickers (or those who disobey company policy) and get mad when they are written up out there reading this, I have a question.

What do you expect to happen to you for pulling stunts like cherry-picking or not calling in sick (no-show), a cookie?! I had a fellow MT (ex-coworker who works for another company) call me furious about being written up the other day, for not calling in sick. Well too bad so sad, I thought. There are accounts with TAT to meet, and MTs who cherry-pick or pull a no-show are partially responsible.

I am a lead and I have positively had it with MTs pulling shenanigans like this and complaining and whining when they get caught and reprimanded. Either suck it up and shape up, or find another line of work. This type of MT reminds me of the bratty kid on the playground who picks on everyone and goes crying to the teacher when another kid gets enough and knocks the crap out of him.
Can you give us a hint you work for? I'm sick of cherry pickers too
You just know they are giving you all the crap they dont want.
I wonder if the cherry pickers will be out of work when all the good speaking American doctors are
Gee, I will still be working because I'm grasping these ESLs pretty dang good, right along with ops and cardiology reports.
And will you admit there are plenty of wannabe service owners also?
nn
American Association of Medical Transcription Service Owners
They do not represent the rights of the individual Transcriptionist it seems but rather promote their organization in order to continue to exist and to continue to survive, they seem to think they should stand up for the service owner and not the MT.

You'd think they would be giving information on how to get more production since our wages have stood still and unless speed engines are used, we make much less than what one would think.

I respectfully disagree. The BEST is CHERRY cake with cherry drizzle. YUMboooooooooooooooyyyy!

We have decided to add this to our current service not have a new service. It will be easier to sm

keep track of and will just be a different department.

It looks like we will work out details over the next 6 months, talking with community college program directors as well as a few of the distance-learning course leaders to work on the recruiting end.

We will train current staff to mentor if they would like to do so and want to work in the office.

We are still working on production requirements, goals to set, pay, benefits and other fine details but we have 6 months to get it all in place with three months to pull it together after that with a tentative start date of 09/01/06.  We need to build the building as well, although that is already at the blueprint stage in a spot next to our current office.

We did not want to cause flames and bashing by listing the company name as there are always so many negative people on this site, but we are national with over 200 transcriptionists, located outside of Chicago (40 miles west) and have the best team of transcriptionists around!

We will have an "official" announcement after the first of the new year.

Thank you for all of your feedback and suggestions!

and it's mostly owners now but....sm

I have lived under 3 different families with children, all children being in the MASTER bedroom above mine.  I have had to wait for TWO sets of kids to grow up.  It's the noise from the kids from the first 2 families.  Ok, this current family, has toddlers - little toddlers of which the older one (5) is a little terror....

I transcribe in both bedrooms, the master for private MDs (as the 2nd BR used to be my daughter's but she's married now and out of here), and the 2nd BR for a national.  With this 3rd family, besides the children, this bruja (Spanish for witch) decides every now and then to BLAST her music at 3 PM so loud that my walls shake (it's the bass that bothers me the most).  I have complained at the concierge desk, has been documented for one year, and then a few weeks ago I decided to introduce myself, big smile on face, while her music was blasting, and tell her that I live under her.

HUGE MISTAKE!!!  This bruja says *oh, YOU'RE the one (who had been complaining)* and pointed her finger at me, and I said *NO, YOU'RE the one, the one who is totally inconsiderate of those above you, below you, to each side of you, and across from you* to which she said *take it up with the concierge* who met with her and said *you can take action* -

an hour later, the police came to my door, BECAUSE I RANG HER DOORBELL - can you imagine - well imagine the courts today, how they worry about the rights of the criminals and what about the victims.  While I wasn't a *victim* - the years' worth of documentation with the concierge AND security, should've been enough.  Nope, they told me not to ring her doorbell anymore and if her nose level gets that bad to avoid the concierge and CALL THEM.  I hate bothering the police for things like this.....but I WILL.

S. Florida is where I live in case you might be wondering where they could possibly be THAT inconsiderate.......yep, S. Florida......

Welcome new owners, but please let us know

Irresponsible pet owners
This is similar to thread on the spotted board about irresponsible owners.  The posters there had sympathy for people who were careless with their pets.
This IS the owners board to do with as....nm

owners trying to compete
The companies are trying to keep their profits high, be competitive with India and the doctors want to pay next to nothing. It's a tough business right now. I would look to other options or really push for more money. I wouldn't work for less than 9 cents. On the other hand, there are MTs out there who think they are very good, but they are honestly terrible. I think if you push for a quality company and sell yourself and you truly are worth the money, you will get it.
I don't get it....the owners, the advertisers....

Owners set the tone
Owners can indeed be nice, but they also need to set the tone, or the corporate culture, for *nice*.  Polite and respectful has to be the clearly stated expectation for behavior by everyone.  *It goes without saying* does, indeed, need to be said and reiterated every so often.  The idea that everyone in the firm is a client of every other employee needs to be stressed.  Some of these things are fairly easy for the owners to check.  Ever call your own business as a potential new hire and see how you're treated?  Ever call Technical with a problem and describe yourself as a worker instead of a boss?  It can be a real eye opener, and it's something owners need to know.
That sure is odd! I wonder if they meant the OWNERS of
nm
In all due respect, some of you MTs need to relax and chill on these issues of "cherry pickers
VR or Indian MTs. I have been in this business for over 25 years now, and this is the very nature of this business.  Work is always pooled around according to WHO is doing the pooling.  If you're an MT who always helps out cheerfully, always willing to give help where needed, sure, you're probably gonna get rewarded by having some sweet dictators routed to your pool.  If you're the pooler and your friend is the recipient, you're probably gonna tend to give your friend some cake dictators.  If, on the other hand, you're pooling work, and there's a cranky, whining, complaining MT, you're probably gonna just happen to send her some of those wonderful marble-mouthed dictators. There is ALWAYS someone at the start of the process, doling out the work to someone -directing it where THEY want it to go for whatever reason.  Same thing in the old days of tapes - tapes were handed out according to whoever was handing them out! Then C-phones, and work would be diverted to your "line", and now the internet.  I don't know if you are all new to the field, or just forgetful, but this is the nature of the industry.  So many are so paranoid and blaming cherry pickers, Indians, or who knows!  Most cherry pickers don't even have to cherry pick. The GOOD work goes to the GOOD workers.  Its simple.  So, be nice, have a good attitude, and do your job.  You're far more likely to get good dictators that way then dreaming up conspiracy theories or looking to blame the invisible cherry pickers.  You can look to those over you in authority, and really should perhaps put a little reflection on WHY you are getting the garbage over and over.  It sure can't hurt to try to look at it another way, cause its really not all as complex and complicated to figure out as you would like! Look to yourselves before always, always blaming those cherry picking Indian VR MTs!  Start tomorrow with a NEW attitude. Or, if its too late at your job, maybe start fresh somewhere else! I doubt it would hurt, and you sure might find yourselves with a new attitude and on the receiving end of some good reports!
OSi owners can do transcription...lmao

For the board owners, just a note to say
nm
I would!!! I get so irritated at irresponsible dog owners (sm)
I hope you file a complaint. As someone else said, at least it will be on file.

I second the pepper spray!!! We have dogs in our neighborhood whose owners let them use others yards at their litter boxes, so to speak. I don't have dogs but have a yard full of dog doo. With kids who like to play outside, or even when MOWING! that is nasty!!!
Question for MTSO owners/ICs
After years of working for others, I am looking to start up my own service.

Can anyone tell me what is the average going rate to charge for a hospital/acute-care account ? I have no idea of where to start my offers out at.
Previous owners were jerks....dog got hit by a car, by the time they took it - sm
to the vet it had gangrene. They told the vet to put the dog down (a year old)...vet called a Husky rescue organization who "rescued" him and had the necessary surgery done. My family adopted him about 2 years ago....great dog, keeps our lab company too. He can run like the wind which is pretty amazing.
Because owners, managers, and CEOs are all trying to cut costs
so they can make as much moolah as possible.  EVERY OTHER JOB I have ever had provided on the job training, EVEN the salaried professional white collar positions.  Going to school or college does NOT train a person to automatically step into a position knowing everything.  Nurses, doctors, lawyers, managers, HR directors, personal bankers, vice presidents, all of them had apprenticeships, internships, training, or worked their way up.  MT is the only field I know of where nobody is willing to train or mentor newbies.  The training at my last MT job consisted of an emailed two-page explanation of how to pull up their jobs.  That's it.  No account specs, nothing.  Go live on day one.
I've noticed a lot of business owners
have their own way of doing things - sometimes too extreme for me.  They either have done so long their way - they don't realize things have changed since they started - or they go by the BOS down to the letter - each and every single letter - and possibly your accounts have not followed that closely in the past - or they are just picky as all get out and have a huge ego and want to make you feel inferior.  There is also the possibility you may be doing some things 'wrong' - but if you have been in the business for 20 years - cannot be that serious - and obviously you know what you are doing!!  I have run into absolutely crazy things in the last year with different MTSOs.... you dont' even want to know!!
Any small MT business owners in CA out there? I need advice!!

I'm looking start up my own small bus., just a couple accounts, but I need to know if there are any HIPAA contracts or anything else that I should be providing for the doctor and myself to sign.  Any advice would be truly appreciated!!

Thnx, Rachel

The owners of both Andrews and M-Tec very accessible and can help you with your decision.
Best of luck. :)
Why do you assume the names here are made up? Could it be the new owners
just posting to post? I have always been here (ss) and I have seen Hayseed, TRose, Country MT and many others that I no longer see anymore. If everyone would keep using their same names, initials we would know who is who.
The owners of the companies I work for certainly could increase my cpl rate. nm
:}
the people who really make BIG BUCKS are business owners
especially when they go into...say- window washing or something right away, instead of into debt. In general, I'm for college - plan to push my kids to get their master's right away as that seems entry level nowadays - but where I made really good money was owning my own service. Make(made) more as an MTSO than I ever will as a nurse-practitioner.
Solid company, nice owners, LOTS of ESLs nm

Wow..I'm so shocked. I didnt know this happened. I know the clients pay the MTSO owners so why ca
the MTs who do the work. Is this the same person. It sounds like she is a nice person but nice does not pay the bills. Anyone care to give initials of the company as I have been looking for a IC job and obviously with these people having a huge turnover due to nonpayment, I do not want to fall into that trap. How awful!!!
Dogs dying from 'miracle drug'. Heads up, doggie owners
Marketed as a miracle drug for man's best friend, Rimadyl is one of the most popular painkillers available for dogs. And it's killing dogs by the thousands.

Vince Sharkey was faced with the decision every pet owner dreads, whether to euthanize his beloved dog King Billy.

Arthritis and deteriorating bones made it too painful for the 8-year-old golden retriever to walk.

His veterinarian recommended putting the dog down.

"He had so much life in him. I said, 'I just can't do that'."

Then Sharkey discovered Rimadyl, a prescription anti-inflammatory drug heavily marketed to owners of older dogs. Sharkey says Rimadyl saved his dog's life.

"Before I had him on the Rimadyl he was not even able to walk. He would drag his back half of his body. The moment we got him on Rimadyl, he was back to being his normal self again.

But Lynne Bradburn tells a very different story.

Her Saint Bernard, Honor, was just 22 months old when he died after taking Rimadyl for a sprained knee.

"He'd been sitting in my lap. And he looked up at me, and he died," Bradburn said.

Honor died after taking just four doses of the drug.

"They tell you it's as safe as aspirin. But it's not. And yes, I'm angry. And I will always be angry," Bradburn said.

The FDA reports some 12,516 complaints about Rimadyl dating back to 1997, including more than 2,300 cases where the dog died or had to be euthanized. The largest number of cases involve liver or kidney failure or internal bleeding.

Rimadyl's manufacturer, Pfizer, maintains the drug is safe, saying some 10 million dogs have taken over a billion doses of the drug, with less than 1 percent of them experiencing any negative side effects.

"There are side effects just as there are benefits with all medicines, with all medical procedures and certainly with Rimadyl. The good news about Rimadyl is that for the overwhelming majority of those 10 million dogs, plus, it has provided safe and effective pain relief," said Pfizer spokesman Robert Fauteux.

But the FDA approved Rimadyl after it was tested on just 549 dogs, raising the question, were the rest of the dogs that took the drug acting as guinea pigs?

Retired veterinarian turned attorney Paul Mabrey says a drug for humans would never be allowed on the market with such a small sample.

In response to continued concerns about the drug, Pfizer sent a letter to veterinarians across the country warning them that some side effects may "occur without warning" and, in rare situations may result in "hospitalization or even death."

Still, veterinarians continue prescribing Rimadyl more than any other drug in its class. But they're careful to warn dog owners looking for a miracle cure.

"There's a lot of people that want the medication not fully aware of everything that's entailed with that but we make sure to do everything we can to educate before they go on the medication," said Dr. Deborah Feltz, a the Elliott Bay Animal Hospital.

It's a warning echoed by those who know first hand what happens when a miracle drug proves imperfect.
My telephone service is VOIP, but it s through my cable service, along with my cable internet. .
We have had VOIP for about a year now and I love it. I really can't tell a difference in traditional service, except the price. One of the best calls of my life was to Bellsouth to cancel our service!
I am not asking for a service, I AM the service looking for recorders

cherry
This is unbelievable. You should have really complained
your boss.
what's a cherry picker?
I'm new at this, so please excuse my ignorance.  What is a "cherry picker" and what does "ESL" stand for?

Your boss WANTS you spy on each other AND rat them out? so much for ethics and morals..I'm too busy doing my own work to worry what others are doing.
CHERRY PICKER
I just started for a new company and the transcriptionists there seem to talk about cherry pickers all of the time.  It sounds to me like the people who have been there a while do not welcome the new employees coming in.  Could someone explain to me exactly what they mean by a cherry picker???? TIA
Cherry Picking

A cherry picker is someone who manipulates the dictation system to give her or himself the better, longer reports or the known good dictators. I am not sure how people do this with at-home and internet based transcription, but when I worked at a hospital people used to check what was coming up on the big Lanier machines and take a break if they saw something bad on the horizon. If you are in a position to assign yourself work, such as a system administrator, you could take the best dictators for yourself, but it is likely if you are new you are not in this position yet.

My advice:  Stay on the good side of your coworkers and do the work that is lined up for you.
