Spending a couple weeks traveling in 4-corners area

We have about 3 weeks to wander around this area -- starting in Albuquerque and ending up in Phoenix.  Looking forward to seeing the National Parks, Monument Valley, etc., but would love to hear about out of the way or particularly neat stuff!!!

I have only been at it for a couple of weeks..
Having several years experience, I thought I could step right in and nail it.  There are a variety of issues/concerns most importantly the accents, getting use to the different accounts (I have several) and unrealistic expectations I have set before myself.  It is a good thing I get paid by the hour because if I got paid by the line, I would be starving!!!  Some files are easy to zip through, others are are a real dragon!!!!  I am going to give it more time though.  I have wanted this position for a while and I don't give up easy!  Thanks for letting me vent.
One of our MTs just went a couple weeks ago. nm

I'm going there in just a couple weeks.
I'm going to Sedona to check out Valley Verde School for my son. Are you familiar with it?
You do it for a couple of weeks and then stop.
He might like it enough that he comes to you.   Marriage is a lot of give and take, unfortunately it is 70/30 a lot of the time.
I got a call a couple of weeks ago, the #
was 777-777-7777 and the guy was obviously Indian.  I didn't understand anything he said, told him so, and hung up.   You can Google the # if you want to find out who it is, though a lot of times it isn't a real #.
I haven't had to fill up in a couple of weeks.
I don't go anywhere too often during the summer or I ride my bike. I think it's about $2.29 for the cheap stuff.
I asked this question a couple of weeks ago.
Left click on the toolbar and don't let go.  Drag the toolbar back down to the bottom and then let go.   I just did it to be sure I was telling you right and it worked.  I lock my toolbar but it doesn't seem to lock as I can move it by accident.
Newbie update from a couple of weeks ago
Sorry it took me so long to update. I wrote a couple of weeks ago about being a newbie at a company and wanting to ask about getting off QA after four months. Well, I heard back and sure enough was told that I was ready to come off QA! I am so excited! Thanks to all who took the time to give me their opinion on the subject.
A couple of weeks ago I had the same problem. It would go out, come back, go out, etc.
All the lights were on, the lights flashed as if it were sending/receiving data, but the other computers were not recognizing my network.  I turned everything off, disconnected everything, rebooted, reconfigured, and nothing worked.   It was also a Linksys router.   Linksys has a troubleshooter on their website and it showed router as working, but not connected to the internet, but it was.   You can try using their troubleshooter to see if that helps.   I ended up getting a new router and went with a Buffalo.   I have had no problems thus far.
It's available now, I just bought it a couple of weeks ago, it's on my desk! NM

I bought the QLDB 2007 CD a couple of weeks ago...sm..
It seems fine.  It's the first electronic version I've ever had so I don't have anything to compare it to.  It was highly recommended over the Drake & Drake electronic version so I went with it.
Has anyone ever lived in one state and worked (for a couple weeks) in another?
My sister lives 500 miles away in another state and recently became ill.  I'd like to be able to go help her out every couple of months, staying a couple weeks and then coming home.  I could only do this if I could work while I was there.  I work for a national as an employee.

Has anyone either done this or know the rules about this?  Would the employer have a problem with this?  I realize there are different tax laws in different states.

Could I just upload my company's platform on a laptop and go?  Any advice/suggestions/experience with this would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in Advance!!!

I have 2 middle age couple friends. One couple became pregnant from condom failure.
This is not just "irresponsible" behavior! Both couples are "fixed" now, because for them, reliable birth control was NOT. But it's an error to assume this stuff happens to people who are unmarried or irresponsible. Both these couples are raising 2nd families, now, but it wasn't "irresponsibility" that did them in!
PA - Pittsburgh area is one locale, Philadelphia area also.
TriState area - PA, NJ, DE.
I'd be all for spending some money on ....
tracking down the father of her child.   Where is he?  Why shouldn't HE be made to provide for the  child he brought into the world.   That's another big  problem...  Not saying this is your friend's situation, but when you have an average of 30% of whites, 50% of Hispanics, and 69% of African-Americans having children without benefit of marriage, we've got a REALLY big problem here in this country.  People are turning their lives into a train wreck and then expecting the taxpayer/government to pick up the after math.  Let's hold the 2 people who bring these children  into  the world truly responsible for them financially.  Maybe people would be a little more careful if  they didn't know  the govt would be their safety net.
Oh yes, I'm spending 3 times as much it seems.
I have been trying to make up a menu for each night and trying to include the cereal/bagels whatever for kids in the morning and buying only what's on my list.  It did help, but I've only tried it twice.  Another good thing is it's in and out as I buy it because I truly believe that the meat in the store has just sat there since no one is buying.  I'd much rather go twice a week (it is across the street) than go only once a month and buy "old meat."  I'm not a big fan of frozen fresh meat anyway; it seems rubbery after it's been frozen...
OF COURSE we know what daycare is! Its anyone OTHER than Mom spending the majority of the day
course, just the way lots of you like it!! Dump and run!!  Unreal. The Govt monitors day care - oh, there's a relief!  Then the Govt monitors schools, which are your next dump off point for your kids! And of course you can't spend the day with your own kids - they grow AWAY from parents over the years, not closer.  You can't control your own kids, cause they're NOT your kids - they belong to daycare and their peer group friends.
Spending too much time with your child?

wealthy spending money
I have minimal respect for Oprah. Yes, she does some good things, but I have noticed that she always makes sure she get splenty of publicity for her "good works." Her remark to David Letterman about her show being so much more than a "talk show" was arrogant, pompous, and demeaning to the rest of the "talk show" hosts.

Last year when her audience got those cars, it was publicized as if she gave them the cars - in fact, the car manufacturer donated those cars - it didn't cost Oprah one red cent. When her audiences get all those goodies on the show, I'm willing to bet it isn't costing her - that stuff is mostly if not all donated. It's a tax deduction as a cost of business for her anyway.

Frankly, I think she and Dave deserve each other. They are 2 extremely self-absorbed people.
Gracious! You all are spending way too much $$ on stickies

GSMI, Inc.  Has good single sheet or flat fold.

Computer Extras has a great price on the large roll of stickies.  Their flat fold is too flimsy for my printer and separates too easily.

I usually get 1" perforated roll from Computer Extras for $54 including shipping.  It looks like it is for dot-matrix printers (has the holes on the side of the page as leaders to fit the printer) but works great in laser printers.  I tear off as little as 6" inches and stack them up in my manual print tray.  The leaders give an easy separation guide for the offices, too.  The 1" perforation makes little waste when separating multiple chart notes/patients on a page.

Same here, although I won't be spending it on a trip to China
I do disagree about not being good at MT though. I think many competent MTs shoot themselves in the foot by not recognizing the value of their skills and working for less than they are worth.
If you are spending all that time having to proof
may as well hire someone else and proof their work. I've considered starting a business of my own but I can definitely see there would be headaches. I do IC for a gal and I really like working for her. She pays me a decent wage and I do my best to make the client happy because I know that will make that gal happy. Don't get me wrong. I'm sure I have made an error here and there; NO ONE is perfect. There are good days and bad days. Some days, I have to send loads of blanks to her but usually because the doctor seems to mumbling, sound quality, maybe a doctor's name in the report I'm not familiar with and don't want to put the incorrect spelling in, or a discrepency I may find in the report. There are other days when I have great docs, great sound quality and the doc may even spell an unfamiliar doctor name for me. :) I definitely hope the gal I work for is happy with my work and I would also hope she would say something to me if she was unhappy so I could fix it. Have you talked to your MTs about your concerns? Sent them changes you have had to make when you proof?
As long as you're doing it just for spending
money & have a husband who is the bread-winner, then you'll do fine. If you're a single mom counting on this to support you and your children, then I'd recommend another field. Now that the greedy corporations have taken us over & are sending most of the work to India, they've pretty much destroyed our industry.

Does it bother you they're spending the inheritance?
And I know that healthcare costs are so out of control here that there are organized flights that go to India and other countries to get get their health care. Because it's sadly cheaper to fly halfway around the world, get a hotel/apartment for a month, buy food, and pay cash for surgery or medical care than it is to stay here and get it down.

He11, even some of the insurance companies were pushing for offshoring our health care to India.

And nobody has yet to say that we don't have great medical care here; the big gripe is that so few have access to it.
Guess what? When he's at work all day at HIS job, he's not spending time with the family
Grrrrr.
Yes because i will be spending money i don't have and won't earn anything with work decreasing

You would be better of just going to work and not spending so much time tilting at windmills.

I replied this morning and was deleted. I asked if you're spending a lot of extra time on the ex
work.  If so, I see no reason why you can't charge her by the hour for what you do.  It could me maybe $100 a week insted of every 2.  I do think that is a rip-off and you're being taken for your generosity.

If I was a single person, I would most definitely take the position.  This would be an opportunity to save lots of money since most of your expenses are paid and you really would not need to maintain an apartment at your home town.

I work for K-Force now. I also hear Precyse travels but not sure, am looking for another company that does.
traveling MTs
My hubby retired recently, and we travel in our RV. I have a laptop, foot pedal, headphones, and an external keyboard. When in our truck, I just set up a TV tray in the back seat and use the keyboard on the laptop. For Internet access, I have an air card from Verizon. With few exceptions, this has worked quite well for the past 9 months of cross-country travel.

I have searched and have not found the answer to my question, so I apologize if this has been discussed before.  I live in Florida and as hurricane season approaches, I am trying to figure out what to do if I need to leave town.  I work for a company that requires an internet connection, unlimited long distance and a C-phone to dial in to the hospitals.  I know that hotels usually offer wireless internet connections, but what about the phone line/connection?  It would have to be something that offered unlimited long distance (as the hospitals are in different states) that could be used anywhere (not just my home).  Would something like Vonage work?  Or does Verizon have something?  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

For those of you doing MT while traveling...
what about internet security? How do you make sure your work is secure? If you are using some other wifi connection when out and about, do you feel it's private? I am trying to figure out the basics. I'm clueless about this laptop thing but it sounds very versatile.
traveling
I went to San Antonio a couple of months ago for 2 weeks. I rented a laptop from Rent-A-Center, had the company install their software, and took it with me. I worked at the local library the first weekend because they had wireless, but then my father-in-law just went to the cable company and got me a modem for the 2 weeks I was there so I could work at his house. I would do it again though, even with going to the library. It was great to be able to go visit family and friends and not have to lose work either.
The traveling MT...
I have seen some posts about MTs who travel while they work.  I would like to try working in the car but my husband is afraid I will get motion sickness.  I am prone to motion sickness on curved roads and cannot read in the car.  Does anyone else have a problem with this or find that they don't have a problem with typing?  It seems like it would be different then reading a book or newspaper especially if I know we have a straight highway drive.

If you have been a CMT for 20 years, how come you spell a lot as alot? ALOT is not a word!!!!
Traveling Hubby
I, too, have a traveling husband with so much responsibility in his job for the past 20+ years.  Often I have had to be put on the back burner with a small child so that he could progress to the successful executive he is today.  Things have never been about me, and I have had to accept this.  I must say it was much more difficult when my child was young.  When he is free, we have to remember to schedule nice things together and get those in his DayTimer before life marches on by us both.
traveling with a laptop
I put a pillow on my lap and the keyboard on top of that. It only took a few minutes to get used to and works great for me.
Traveling Transcriptionist
How can they expect you to be a traveling Transcriptionist and go cold turkey into a facility and maintain a line count of 1500 lines?
Traveling transcriptionist job
I would love a job like this. Where do you apply for it. Also, do you have to do ops to get the job?
Re: traveling transcription
It sounds pretty good and it's a way to see some of the US that you might not otherwise be able to, but I couldn't leave my kids. You also have no way of knowing how much work you'll be given, so make sure you are able to meet your goals and have an out if it gets to be overwhelming. Would you be traveling alone or with another MT, for example? There are several things to consider. I personally am a hometown girl, but if you like to travel, why not?
Are there any traveling transcriptionists out there and do you like it.nm

laptop while traveling
What about to send and receive your work via internet services.  I would think a wireless/high speed internet would be needed, first of all; but then will that work at all motels that advertise high speed internet services?  Any other tips regarding this will be appreciated.  I am in the thinking stages of this right now, so want to get the details worked out before spending a lot more money.  TIA
Here's how I work while traveling...sm
If we're staying at a hotel, I stay only at one where there is a secured high speed internet available. They'll be happy to tell you if the connections are secured or not if you ask. How you know is this... if it's secured you'll have to enter passwords to enter their system. If they're not secured, you'd just plug in your cord and go for it.

If we're staying with relatives then I stay only with those that have the high speed internet connectivity available through a secured connection.

If neither of the above are available then I use my PeoplePC dial up account to work from. While it's not as fast as DSL/cable it connects well enough to let me work.

I take my keyboard and mouse and plug them into the laptop so that I do not have to depend on the laptop keyboard... which drives me nuts to type much on! Of course the foot pedal goes along as well.

Happy traveling!

q for those traveling with laptop --
if you use a rolling case, have you had any problems with the laptop that could have resulted from being a bumpy ride? my brother said never to put a laptop in a rolling case, but if i travel by air, i'd practially have to to bring all my essentials along...(and not stoe it)
Laptops and traveling
I have two accounts that I work on. My account during the week we don't have strict times, just a time you have to have files done by, so that does allow for a little more ease. On the weekend I cover for a small 50 bed hospital, so sometimes I may have 20 files, sometimes I may have 2. The one on the weekend has a special footpedal that you can only use with their program, but it really isn't that awkward in the car. The one during the week I can use a foot pedal or use F2 to start/stop, F3 to rewind, F4 to FF. At first I was a little slow with this but now I don't find my speed any different with using F2 or with the foot pedal.

It takes some getting used to, but where i live it takes forever to get somewhere, and it's really nice to be able to get some work done. I actually got to make some extra money the other day. My mom drives for a trucking company and they needed someone to take her to get her truck. So she drove my truck to go get it (about an hour away) and I worked the whole time. Got paid a $100 bucks to ride in my truck and work! Of course that was like a one time deal.

The best for me though is getting to go to Florida and visit my dad who is 6 hours away. I can still take my work and work on the road with a pc card (about $60 a month) and not have to take time off. Just have to make sure you discipline yourself to work and not chat with hubby! :)

Like I said, it takes some getting used to, but it comes in handy!
