For QA consulting I'm paid per hour; QA instructing (college) paid salary, QA editing paid per li
I am an IC and work for two different MTSOs as well as instruct at a business college.
Fees
I would not be tax deductible per se. You would not receive the money, therefore it would not be income.
Fees
Actually, the fees are deducted from the income, but you never see it because it is deducted.  I'm pretty sure it would be tax deductible.  Again, I am not justifying the existence of the fee.
Rental Fees

I noticed that several companies are charging their employees rental fees for equipment/software. If one was in-house, they would not have to pay a rental fee. How are these companies getting away with this? Why would you, an employee, agree to pay for their equipment? The only time you should pay a rental fee is if you are an independent contractor. As an employee, you do not pay to work for the employer, they pay you!

I am just amazed that companies are actually charging their employees to work for them!

late fees
My business attorney told me I could really charge whatever I wanted - BUT - it had to be put as a disclaimer on the bottom of every billing you send them-- that is their "notice" -- you can't just charge them without warning them.  I charge 5% of total billing.  Mine reads something like "late fee of 5% will be charged if invoice is not paid within 10 calendar days."   Be careful on the verbage of calendar days versus business days.   And don't be afraid to charge it or defend it -- every other vendor they have is charging it!!
need help with fees - digital

I can get a new contract but will do the work digital.  I have only worked as IC the old fashion way - tapes and picking up, printing and delivery.  I will now do everything through e-mail and a C-phone. The office manager is trying to squeeze me for a good price, telling me she has somebody willing to do the workload for 6c/pl and she says its characters only, no spaces etc.  Their previous lady did the transcription for a fixed amount per month but this sounds really screwed up.  Any help or suggestions on what I need to think about regarding charges etc?  I now get $3 a page and that includes my driving etc.  I am happy that I would save gas and time but don't want to work for free either.  My $3 a page figures to about 11cpl when I checked.

definitely charge fees if you do that

high ones...  they don't want you to do it for free, do they?

I sympathize.. $100 an hour... what a job

Monthly fees
May I ask which carrier this is through?  I have ATT and to use my laptop I can hook it up through my phone with a USB cable but in order to get on the internet I would have to buy the data package for $59.99 a month. Thanks, we do a lot of traveling in the summer.
membership
In my opinion, no.  It's not worth the outrageous price.
PWP membership

My wife and I both belonged to chapters in the Central Indiana Regional Conference. It is a good organization of mostly good people who , like yourself found themselves in the situation of single parenthood. This is a great suport group, and the only one I've found that caters to kids.

membership

I had considered it some time ago but having seen them become so devoted to offshore MT's in India, I also agree that they are not worth being a part of let alone me sending them money for membership so they can turn around and sponsor above mentioned overseas MT's training on my dime...

Well, the MT membership is

free the first year and if we don't like it, we don't have to join next year, right?  I don't blame you for being skeptical, but since there's no cost, I can "afford" to give this org the benefit of the doubt.

I do agree we need an org for only MTs, that way we aren't being sold out.

Any IC charge late fees? Please advise.
I have been contracted with a hospital for almost 13 years and never had a problem with getting paid every two weeks.  I email my invoice on Monday and receive check via mail by Thursday or Friday.  Within the last three years I have had a little trouble, not often, but usually critical times for me, with receiving payment during that time.  Does anyone charge a late fee and if so, do they pay it?  I thought about putting at the bottom of my invoice "Payment is due within 5 days or a late fee of $ will be charged.
membership sold
Yes, AAMT does sell membership list with your info -- I asked.  Is one of their main sources of revenue.  Then I asked to be removed from the list they sell and the calls became less frequent.  Then I didn't renew.... ha.
AMA membership/nonmembership

I need to know the signifiance of whether a doctor is a member of the AMA or not.  What exactly does this organization do and what does their membership mean.  Any info would be helpful. I am researching a physicain who is a nonmember.

AMA membership / nonmembership
The best place to start would be the AMA's own website. There the significance of being a member versus nonmember are explained, as well as their bylaws, etc.

She is talking about membership fee for what
was AAMT.
With new membership, will MTstars still have
nm.
I doubt it, though they will sock you with late fees and expect - sm
both your Feb. 1 and March 1 payment at the same time. You could pay the one by March 1 and use the 15 day grace period and pay the March 1 payment by the 15th (along with late fees from the previous late payment) to get square again. I have to use the 15 day period now and then, hate to do it, but it does not hurt anything.
2.30 (but that was at Sam's Club with the membership card) (nm)

It's not any cheaper after paying for membership.

I dropped my membership after 13 years.

Not just for MTs. Membership is open to all transcriptionists.
This includes general transcriptionists, legal transcriptionists, etc. I did sign up because it was free for now. I am curious to see where this goes.
I just started using "mydocsonline" - no extra fees unlike the one advertising above this - sm
Simple to use to, I only have 2 users so $99 for a year which is half the cost of most of the others, and HIPAA compliant, etc. Not sure how cost effective if you have a lot of doctors though, but I like the fact they give you so much space a month, you can save/delete whatever you want to do, no extra charges/mb or kb--metroscript is 14.95 a month (or more) and .34/megabyte of each upload, I would have ended up paying about $120 a month, forget that! I tried the free trial of mydocsonline and it works well for me.
opting out of that is part of the membership application.

If you're talking about MetroScript, I didn't find that they had any extra fees (sm)
They pretty much only charge you for what you use. I only pay $14.99 per month and it works great for me.
They have to make money somehow since they have declining membership dues. nm

Check into adoption through local Catholic services, fees in our state (Ky) were based on income and
although expensive, not as bad as private adoption.  Still, a long wait, we were told.
if mt paid 9, editor paid 4 or 5...how can company charge 14 and make it..sm

I know the going rate in our area is 14 cents per line.  As MTs most companies here pay us 8 or 9 cents a line.  Now add in the Editor rate at 4 or 5 per line..you are paying OUT more than you can charge a line.  How would companies stay in biz?

Unless all work is sent by the company overseas at pennies per line, this would not pay for a company.

just curious how this works out

$25/hr. = Low Wages?
I think at $25 per hr. I'm making a bit more than the manager of the French Fry Department at Mickey D's...
QA wages
Anyone out there have an idea of what a QA person should be paid per hour if working at home?
wages
If you keep abreast with current events/news pertaining to the economy you will find that ours is not the only profession whose wages have not increased from levels in the 1990s. It is a lot of people as well who have to leave their homes to go to work for maybe the same that we make every day.
wages
I am not putting you down but if you have been in this business for 20 years and have been reading this board  --give me a break you should be able to project what you will be earning especially if you have had your own accounts.  Especially if you have seen your wages go up and down, cannot believe you are asking this if -- like I said -- you have been in this business 20 years.
Wages
I don't know about anyone else but I make the same amount of money if not more doing VR than I used to doing transcription, at least when there's work.  Lately the middle to end of the week I have nothing to do!  I personally am only doing this while I finished my bachelor's that I needed to apply to grad school which I start this fall when I'll quit.  I don't think that VR will ever replace MTs entirely because it just is too important to have perfect medical records and VR just isn't perfect especially since doctors do dumb things like talk to other people, correct themselves, mumble, etc.
wages
Just know from my experiences in the last 25 years that doctors are notoriously CHEAP... Do the best you can and if you can't get as much or more money than you are making now, I'd stay where you are. Just my humble opinion. Been there, done that many times.
wages
Wages also depend on where you are located. In house jobs and small independents are going to pay less in rural and struggling areas because they can. In rural areas jobs also depend on who you know. They would rather pay a untrained local rather than a trained outsider. Speaking from the voice of experience.
the wages were no more than they sm
are now when I started, the books were just as expensive. you buy one at a time and build from there. A good reference library is a MUST in this business. If you can get by with the internet search I guess that's ok, but I see people who are not searching at all.

I think 90% of the questions would be answered if folks would invest at least in a Medical Phrase Index. Sorry but its part of the job.
wages
What no one says is that MT wages are considerably lower in rural areas and small cities. Do not be specific but it would help if geographic locations, were mentioned by posters if making more.
But how much are the US EDs gonna be paid? Typically this work is paid at 2-3 cpl. nm
:+
You don't get paid an hourly rate you get paid by line - sm
so because of how you are paid (not an hourly rate) you don't get OT, especially if you are an IC.
I would move on. I think it is so unfair not to be paid for spaces! I think we should get paid

per keystroke, but that'll never happen.  I just think that these national companies are going to keep finding ways to cheat us.  I found a job working for a hospital as an employee, paid hourly plus incentive, and they let us expand everything!  Somebody's gonna have to kill me to make me give up this job.  I will never go back to the national's again.

I feel for you though.  I know that for us MTs those good jobs are few and far between and some have little choice but to work for the nationals.  I just happened to luck into the job I have now.  I just applied at the right time.

Good luck to you whatever you decide.

If those companies paid a fair wage, and paid more
all came out equal, people wouldn't feel the need to try to make up the deficit by going for the good stuff. I actually prefer the harder, juicier reports. But I can't make a living doing only that, because the pay is not commensurate with the difficulty. So even though I prefer not to, sometimes I have to pick up some of the easier, more boring 'line-o-matic' reports just to make ends meet. Tell your MTSO to make it work their while, and MTs will stop taking all the easy work away that you obviously would prefer to keep for yourself.
You wont show UE being paid because it is employer paid -
the employee will never have to pay this.
Biller wages
Can someone give me a ballpark figure of how much a biller would get that has no experience? I've been offered a possible job, and I got a feeling they are going to ask me how much I expect to make.
I don't think cutting wages is against the law.
Not paying overtime for employees, inappropriate classification of statutory employees, etc., those items fall under DOL.

If cutting wages was a crime, then the airlines, factories, hospitals, virtually all businesses would be under "investigation" and in grave trouble.

What are you trying to accomplish with your post? Just put information out there about a company you won't name? Wanting advice? Truly, I don't understand what you are wanting in reply.

radiology wages
If you are thinking of working for a large teaching hospital where they have 10 page Neurointerventional reports, large MRIs and CTs , etc, you will surely find yourself regreting working for per page.  I currently make $200+ per day doing radiology.  Today I did 112 reports and tho I won't see my exact lines until tomorrow I know I am over the $200 mark. You do the math.   Last month I pulled in $4000.
here's an even better link to see ALL about wages in USA

Slave Wages
I dont know who you work for but I make about $25-30 per hour. I work two jobs and 10-12 hours a day and on weekends and I make between $6000 and $7000 per month. I know that is excessive for hours but I am trying to pay off my house, car, etc and I am spoiling my 3 kids rotten!!

I type radiology, which I believe is the easiest and fastest to learn and type.
yearly wages

Last year had small MTSO two part-time IC's working for me, worked as employee parttime in clinic.  Worked 50 hours per week.  Made -- myself not counting what my IC's brought in -- $62 K.  Starting June 1st, quit the employee position -- divorce attorney fees paid off, no IC's and keeping my 4 accounts,  will work 25 to 28 hours per week and make approximately 40K from these four accounts per year.  If I get stuck and need more will do overflow for another MTSO.   But too many headaches and time to take some time for myself.  Looking forward to it.

Cannot bellieve wages.

Many companies now only want to pay 6.5 to 8 CPL.  This is even for seasoned MTs.  Even ICs are not offered much more compensation.  I have friends working at WalMart making more than some MTs.  If you type 200 LPH at 7 cpl that is $14.00 an hour, but the health insurance is very expensive at these companies.  You must have over 98% on QA scores, but they don't want to pay more for quality and experience.  Plus many jobs are IC and you have higher taxes.  I feel that wages have been falling steadily in the past years and continue to fall.  No wonder there is a shortage of experienced MTs (so I hear).  More likely it is a shortage of experienced MTs that want to work for such low wages and no raises in the future.
