in an 8.5 hour day or 7.5 productive hours (minus 30 minutes for lunch and two 15 min. breaks).  Don't know if that helps.  Also I've heard that it will take the average productive MT twice as long to type as to dictate, i.e. a 5 minute job will take an MT 10 minutes to type without interruptions.  So figure 90 minutes of dictation is going to take at least three hours to type and probably a little longer if you figure in interruptions like phone calls, kids, etc. 


For me, I would probably say 120-130 minutes would equal an 8 hour day.

Minimum wage requirements when there's no work, perhaps?
Looks like the Q is having to pony up minimum wage to a lot of MTs when there is NJA and this, I believe, is the highest in CA. Interestingly, CA-based employees of the Q seem to get NJA less frequently than other regions.

I work long hours and keep distractions to a minimum sm
and very, very luckily was assigned an account that was an excellent fit.   I'm pretty sure you all won't believe me anyway and I'm not sure why I bothered to respond  but my "secret" is just hard work and dumb luck.  Plus I do Radiology and for me that is a big part of the equation.  
I work on Escription VR and if you cannot make minimum wage, then
something is really wrong with either you or your system. I make a very good salary on VR. It can be done even at 4 cpl and that is what I am paid. I have occasional straight but 90%+ is all VR. I do not understand people saying minimum wage- that is only 6 or 7 dollars an hour, ridiculous to work for that in this kind of profession.

the office manager (who does not normally transcribe) dishes out the work, so some days are easy, others are a mix.  So no cherrypicking is possible.  You type up what is given to you, period.  She will alternate the tough one's out so no one person gets him/her all the time unless they want him/her and are used to that doc, or everyone gets a little piece, etc. There are days when I ask for easy work (tired, chemo day, Jen sick, or a lot going on, etc.) but not often, generally I get a mix but they all get easier the more you do them.  I am not working as much as I should be of course, every week is different here so I adjust my limited work schedule accordingly, so sometimes it hard to get better at certain docs.  I used to have a lot of blanks with the Trauma ER unit, but I have been doing that a lot lately and now and very good at it, still a time consuming account but at least I am improving. -----------------------  But I believe the OP was stating she did it to clear out the log, not to make more lines, and only when she was asked to do so.  At an old job I had #s meant everything, everyday we would get report (2=4 x a day) of the backlog, and emails pleading us to work, work, work.  The QA rules sucked  (MQ probably is basing their new plan loosly on this one), however we did not get penalized, just chewed out if you sent in too much work to QA (over 5%, and was 80% ESL), I would imagine eventually fired if you continued to do it. They were a great place to work for until they re-organized....it all went downhill from there.  This is why I prefer smaller MTSOs, it's not all about the #s, yes, they want production too but at least it's not so cut-throat.

that is just not true.  I have several accounts that use an 11-word line!  So spelling out numbers certainly doesn't add any cost at all


To suggest that it's all about padding the line count says a lot.  MTs with integrity would not even THINK about that.  To me, if someone worries about line padding, they have most likely considered it, done it , been caught doing it or perhaps been associated with someone who did.  I believe it never even occurs to most MTs.


And, no, it isn't about consistency.  As another poster mentioned, it's about what the client wants.  Not all companies, including some of the nationals, are adamant about following the BOS.  Some follow it.  Some don't.  Some do for some accounts and not for others.  Geesh.


For most companies how many hours may part time employees work. What is the minimum and maximum
usually.
Becky you work in a great place. With no one hovering, I bet you get a lot more work done w/o agoniz
wants what. The only people qualified to do QA on my reports are the dictating doctors and the rest is just pure waste of money and time. If I have a question fine. But this random QA bites and hurts everyone. BTW, I don't have random QA for those who seem to think I may have an ax to grind. No dog in this fight. Just common sense.
How is QA score measured? Is there a standard scale? sm

Is it per report?  Is by the number of characters in the report?  I am guessing that a missed comma is counted differently than a wrongly used medical term...

Where I work 90 minutes is FT- but I am an IC so - sm
it does not matter in terms of benefits. Though they are changing things some, basically if you work FT you get a better line rate than the PT people.....I am in-between (60-75 minutes a day depending on life) and luckily quite valued so I do okay.
So you use MCI for unlimited LD for work and they're fine with it? About how many minutes do you
use per month, do you think?
I started with 310 minutes of work on Friday night- sm
talk about being tied to the computer all weekend. Have 131 minutes for Monday's work, fun, so have a busy day ahead! I was basically off the last week in December so it is nice to make up for lost wages.
And it is my place -- I work for MQ too and
if you don't like it and it isn't changing for you like you want it as quick as you want, get out!

I think all those who are happy with MQ are getting tired of hearing your same old sad story all the time.

If you can't change the company (duh, who thought they could) and it still doesn't suit ya, get out! Leave! Believe me, we don't want you there! You are free to go!

Management staff is awesome, plenty of work, pay always on time.  My experience with them has been that if I do quality work, keep my line count committment, and just let them know if I am having a problem (sick, etc) and can't work, I have no problems with them.  I have been there almost three years, and love it.


And before anyone accuses me, NO, I am not management.  I am an MT (employee status)


Need a quiet place to work without .

Trying to avoid interruptions in the home.:)  Any of you work from an added room or trailer that you turned into an office?  Closing the door is not an option.  Would need to actually leave the house even if it is to go to a room added on or to a camper in the yard.  Wondering if others have done the same thing.   I saw in the paper where a company rents out an office for a day, a week, or however long you need it for.  Wondering if that would be worth it just to have the chance to work in peace.


 


MQ was a good place to work
I have been with them for 6 years and before that with another company. I have been extremely happy working for MQ; but too many things are changing and it is a very uncomfortable feeling. I wish I still had my old office to work from but unfortunately I have no say.

I might be checking out the grass on the other side to see if it is really any greener. What do I have to lose? I am no longer happy.

I wish you well and hopefully your office won't be closed and you are transferred into unfamilar territory.

With going to DQS looks like the OT/bonus is gone.  Personally I can't make it without the extra (supporting 4 on one salary). Need to fine a place to work weekends only.  Anyone have any suggestions?

apparently you like the place you work for...
for the most part.  Maybe you should contact your supervisor and let  her/him know you would be OK with mentoring  a less experienced MT, but let them know you don't want someone else's junk to count against your QA score.  Good luck!

They are very helpful and encouraging and give you plenty of time to get up to speed.  I have been with other national companies and they are the best.  You'll be happy there! 



Have bedroom only for work place
Sit to where I can see out to the mailbox and my driveway. I have my television in here though and also husband wanted to join me so he has his computer desk right behind me. He could have had his own room but he wanted to be close to his honey. It works out really well.

I have been with the same company for about 5 years now.  What I do is take the first letter of each word for a phrase and make an expander.  Ex:  The patient was admitted to the hospital, I make the Expander with tpwatth.  I have found this the easiest on the platform I use as I was not sure if anything like InstantText or others would work.  You don't have to assign the expander to a specific dictator so this helps with the "generic phrases".  For medications that are capitalized, I also make an expansion.  Ex:  Tylenol is expansion tylenol.  Also have them for drugs that are the same prescription all the time, aspirin 81 mg daily is a81, aspirin 325 mg daily is a325, aspirin 81 mg p.o. daily is a81p.  I even made it for when it is capitalized in a list, Aspirin 81 mg daily is aa81.  Every little thing helps.  I do have expansions for doctors that say the same thing over and over, I just make sure I proofread very carefully.  Try to use abbreviations you can remember.  I even have them for b.i.d., etc. 
Tell you what the place I work for started
I work for a national doing a hospital here in my town. The hospital told the dictators no more cell phone calls just because of what you are talking about. I remember when they were allowed to use and all the cutting out so big gaps left. It will work if someone in charge puts that in force.
The place I work already offers 800 numbers for all
inside accounts and most outside accounts as well. Not all are not good to the MTs.
Anyone really know if allocation of work takes place

I wonder if anyone has true knowledge of work being allocated to a particular MT or MTs.  Supervisors possibly who have done this or have witnesses this could you please tell me if this occurs or if paranoia is setting in? 


It seems to me that this is wrong for important reasons that could stand up as an issue for being reprimanded by anyone who does it.  It is taking money out of one person's paycheck and putting it in another, after all, how sleazy is that???


This is a medical transcription business.  We should all be accountable.  What are we, working for the mob???

I work for a place that pays per word (sm)
and to figure it you just get the total word count (using the word count feature in Word).  You would have to find out if the 1000 words is based on "a word is a word," or if there's some "formula" such as suggested in another reply, like every 5 characters counts as a word and does that include spaces in that count, blah, blah, blah.  I don't know. If it's just straight up $5.00 per actual 1000 words, then I don't think that's good at all.  I make .0085 per word, and I've figured out that it would be an average of 8.5 to 9.5 cents per line.  Anyway, if "a word is a word" at least, $5.00 per 1000 words would probably equal around 5-6 cents per line or so.
Transcend is a great place to work
I can't believe all this negativity! I just love my job with Transcend. From the recruiter to my TL and ROM every single thing I have been promised has happened! I'm very happy! Yes, you do have to produce - but what MLS position don't you? Transcend also gives you the tools you need to succeed and will help you get better, faster and making more $. Stop bashing this company! They truly are awesome!!!! And the promote from within! They are so big on internal growth!!!!

now it is accepted and used all the time. Go figure!

You're right about the "prehistoric" part! The place I used to work (sm)
uses Lanier, and it's a mess. It's WORSE than prehistoric. It was down more than it was up. It was also not at all friendly for at-home MTs, either.

Somebody is cloning my username now and posting. Guess on a board like this anyone can troll. So, I guess I will change my username again, so as not to be taken the wrong way. Wow, people really have a lot of time on their hands!
I used to say he nursed for 30 minutes every 30 minutes. I was trying to figure
out a way to strap him across my chest so he could help himself while I went about whatever it was I had to do.    I really miss those days too.

I don't really have a set requirement as far as minutes per day goes but I take about 60 minutes each day give or take, Monday-Friday and sometimes Saturday depending.
qa REQUIREMENT
My firm requires 84-100 per day/or until all work for that day is complete. We work on salary.

I have worked for a few different companies.  My supervisor at each one either had yappy dogs, whiney kids or both.  Once I was speaking to my sup and her husband started going off about something in the background.  I don't think there is a single person with a quiet house who works in management at any of these companies.

One thing the office needs is to be able to view the file, make changes if necessary, and have the changes easily accessible to the other computers within the office.


Also, the capability to search within a document for a pt is also needed without having to open each file to do the search.  They want to be able to do a search of all files and locate a patient.  I usually do one file a day for each doctor and put all of his patients in that file in Word.  I don't want to have to make a separate file for each patient as that would be way too time consuming.

"account requirement" was what I got...
because is certainly is proper..I try to think that it's because the record might be easier to read that way. This job must be much easier for the new ones than old ones like me who have to "unlearn" the proper way of doing things.
Obvious what 1 requirement is...
Obvioulsy one of the requirements of becoming an MT is rudeness and being quick to judge! I was just asking for suggestions and what being an MT entailed. In no way did I suggest that I had any idea about what MT requires of a person. Sheesh!
I know if someone posted on the engineering forums I am a part of I would be more than happy to give them suggestions on how to get started, different paths they could take, ect. Then again, I like to impart my experience so maybe I can help others learn from my mistakes so they don't have to make the same ones.

Obviously MTs work from home for a reason - seems that most of you don't work well with others!! Only 1 person actually took my post for what it was and told me their experience!! That's a real shame.
What PC requirement is good for an MT IC?
I am an IC MT and would like to buy a new PC, but I am at a complete loss as to what the new norm is regarding PC systems for transcription.  I would like to also buy Dragon Naturally Speaking Prefferd, so I need something that is compatible with that program too.  Does anyone have any advice on what make, hard drive, memory size, and Word program is best to use?  I have heard that all new PC's come with Vista and have heard many complaints regarding that program, so that concerns me.  Thanks~
