Serving Over 20,000 US Medical Transcriptionists

Wasnt' that post scary? Isn't it UNREAL?? Who cares if we type drugs wrong, right?

I could go on and on about the STUPID mistakes MTs make - perfect dictators - just stupid lazy mistakes - wrong drugs and meds entirely - happens all the time. Forget dosages.  If doctors had to rely on this typed garbaged (used typed intentionally - transcribed doesn't fit), they'd kill most of us as patients.  And some MTs have an attitude about it? So frightening. But lets' give 'em bonuses and incentives to GET IT RIGHT!

I just HAD to post this! Unreal!

Yahoo had an article about careers that you can "do from home to earn $30K to $70K.....I KNEW the MT biz would be on there.    Although I don't agree with everything folks say regarding the eventual decline and demise of the profession, this particular snippet could be a reason why things are going in the downhill direction.  I'll highlight my favorite parts!

    Medical Transcriptionist

The job of medical Transcriptionist involves a lot of listening and typing. Medical transcriptionists listen to doctor's notes on a headset and type out the information, editing for clarity when necessary. Their duties might include medical discharge orders, autopsy reports, referral letters, consultation notes, and the like. The medical transcriptionist must have a good working knowledge of medical jargon and the ability to convey information with the utmost accuracy.

To become a medical transcriptionist, an associate's degree or one-year diploma from a medical transcriptionist training program is recommended. Being familiar with medical jargon is a plus.

Salary: Medical transcriptionists brought home a salary of $31,250 per year in 2007.

You are so wrong, it's scary
VR editing can be done by any newbie?? Hows the view from the gleaming offices of MTSO Corporate? That is EXACTLY the misguided thinking that has highly trained medical language specialists making less than the fry cook at McDonald's. I would take QAing 99% completed MT reports over deciphering the mess of VR any day. QA does not take any more training than any experienced highly trained MT has.
My post disappeared. I wasnt being disrespectful with the TV just tired and didnt proof before subm
Sorry if I offended anyone when I saw it I had a good laugh with everyone else but still thought there was good advice in the post but I guess not -- my apologies if I offended and will watch my ShortHand lol.
I read your post below and not that anyone cares about my two cents, but it sounds to me SM

that your DH  is having an allergic reaction to something, especially from the red blotches and swollen lip you described.  Sounds like hives to me.  My son has had several episodes like that and a trip to the ER is always necessary.  Especially with the swollen lip whose to say his throat won't close up?  People die from anaphylaxis.  I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on TV, but I'm pretty familiar with anaphylaxis and allergic reactions.  My son, a teenager now, carries an Epipen with him at all times.

    Good Luck!

Drugs! Lots of drugs! Sadly, you're probably like
most of us and don't have time to go to the doctor! Oh well! Feel better soon! You are not alone!
    getting the wrong work type
I work for an MT service and do discharge summaries per my request.  My production is quite good when I work on this work type.  However, quite often I end up transcribing an OP note here and there.  This really slows me down and affects my line count.  I realize that it probably happens because the doc keys it in wrong.  Or it could be that when they are out of summaries, my 2nd work type is OPs.  I am really out of practice with OP notes and just getting one here and there throws me for a loop.  Any advice on how to handle this? TIA
you're wrong, I type for an MD w/ADHD...nm

uh, I don't type a medication that is spelled wrong
    nm
Sorry, I posted this post under the wrong post
    Sorry
    That is unreal! nm
    nm
    ASR example inside, unreal. nm

Doc says: The patient was taken to the operating room and placed on the operating table in the supine position.  ASR interprets: The patient preoperatively. Tablespoon position. It should also be noted that this doc says the same sentence at the beginning of all his operative reports, so this has been corrected multiple times. Terrible program. eScription might be a good company to buy us. I have heard that their speech recognition program is very good.

not OP but I see nothing wrong with the post...

I think you are wrong about your post
I have been in many, many countries and never expected someone to speak English just because I am visiting. I spent 2 weeks in a totally nonspeaking country before- never could order grape jelly for breakfast- but I knew I was the foreigner, not them. To assume that all that have traveled feels as above, just not speaking for me. Oh, by the way, even if not able to speak their language, I have found a thanks or thank you works out really well, most seem to know that.
I had my post under the wrong one. I meant it for the other one just above yours where sm

they said they are paid on production.  I saw yours and I did understand yours, but somehow I guess while I was reading it, I responded to the other one.

Sorry about that!  I too made much more per hour as an MT even if I made $25 as QA, but I am vehemently opposed to QA being paid per line.

I knew somebody would take this post wrong
This is the very reason I hate to post on this board....someone always takes a post the wrong way. Being an MT and Editor is a VERY stressful job and it just seems that as time goes on the pay gets lower, the hours get longer and nobody cares. You obviously havent come to the point where you are fed up with the whole industry yet but I'm sure your time will come. You don't have to tell me anything about stress...I usually put in 12 hour days at least 5 days a week.
Must have taken a while to type this post.
    Feel your pain though...
True, above post in wrong place. Sorry.
    x
This type of post is so useless here
Prove it to the people you work for, or quit your bellyaching, and work!!!
Of course, I apologize for placing my post in the wrong spot!! :)

Is Error rate post on wrong board?
No responses -- just wondering if I should be on a different board?  Could you direct me please? I am new to this site. I own a small medical transcription service with 19 transcriptionists -- needing to implement an error rate policy and looking for suggestions on how other services have done this?  Thanking you in advance for any and all assistance!  D.
I see I spelled *grammar* wrong in my post above. *sigh*
Let me say it before anyone else! LOL
This type of post is absolutely rediculous
Why in the world do people come to this board asking such questions? Unbelievable!
I KNEW someone would post this type of hooie. Just
    d
wrong, wrong, wrong. work is being outsourced because of $. period. not because of unqualified MTs

    No, it wasnt Toth.
    Thanks! Have a good day!
no where did I say it wasnt work?
I only said you are not typing the lines that you should be paid BY THE HOUR and not by the line. That way, the more corrections you make the less you feel like "I'm not making any money today." Thus quality is going to be much better because the MT is not going to worry about going as fast as they can to make money and will take time out to make the corrections needed.

There should be a requirement of lines, but not PAID per line.
Sorry. I wasnt arguing with you. Im just generally
it just gets me p1ssed off, and then i start ranting!
    wait..wasnt thread to send ESL's
Now you dont want work sent overseas??  I thought the thread was to send all the ESL's overseas??  I frankly dont want any work sent anywhere but for all of it to stay in America and I will do the difficult and good doctors, cause they pay my salary.
I honestly wasnt meaning to be implying your sil was gay.. I just

If offshore wasnt paid less, US MTs wouldnt

I agree. I would be long gone if I wasnt the age I am and am actually phasing out anyway.
    :
That wasnt very helpful..she is confused by verb, noun, and adj. as far as how to tell
which is which. I think the "a" in front is more helpful.
Wasnt you worried that some weirdo might come back in while you werent there to monitor it? sm
It just worries me that after we get everything set up will some weirdo go in and look around, get info off of your accounts, or go look at icky stuff on the web using your computer? My husband says his tech guys at his work said there is no reason why a tech person cant "fix" your problem by walking you through it. They say there is never ever a reason to authorize someone you dont know access to your computer. I am so confused! Really want this job, but dont want to risk my computer being an open door either.
Wasnt that a rip. They must have called every person on every account to work. I cant possibly
figure that mentality. PLUS we get nothing extra for weekends, nothing extra for  holidays ZIP. They overload the accounts and so we have no work. Why would they pay weekends or holidays when they play this game. Somebody is pocketing something but it AINT THE MTs. I hope every MT in that office inundates Mt. Laurel with complaints until they replaced the people that did this and not to mention their STUPID STUPID PICKY MQ point plan. That is a horrendous joke. Somebody up there needs to be removed and quickly.
So you have also noticed the light and dark shades in text. I wasnt aware that it was like this when
I bought it. Is there anything to make this better at all. I just bought this whole computer system with LCD screen and I guess I will call them and see what can be done or just get used to it. I like it but not so much having the text look like that. Have you spoken to anyone about yours.
I typed a report on the wrong patient as the doc keyed in the wrong info, SM
He later said the correct patient's name and I SWEAR to this day I made the changes but somehow the report when through without the correct patient and changes made. I still remember that incident.
    It's the drugs
    x
    drugs.com
I almost always use drugs.com for almost every drug need.  It's the best site I have found, but otherwise, I prefer Stedman's Quick Look, but let's face it, by the time these books are printed, there are another 100 drugs out there.  Can't keep up fast enough with them. So the web site is the best.
    Drugs@FDA
    http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cder/drugsatfda/

You can search for any 3 consecutive letters and pull up a list of all drug names containing those 3 consecutive letters.
    drugs.com
I use this site because you can put in a part of the drug name, and it gives you a list of drugs that contain that letter combination. So if you can only hear the middle part of a drug, it gets a little easier to narrow it down.
    try drugs.com (nm)
    x
    drugs.com
The problem I have with this site is that there are many generic drugs that are listed with a capped first letter. It is hard to tell which drugs are brand name and which are generic when using drugs.com.

If you are typing the drug name in a paragraph and it is generic, the first letter is not to be capitalized so it is important to be able to find out if the drug is brand or generic.
    Drugs.com... just for MTs... sm
Drugs.com lets you type in just a few letters and provides choices. Also, from the homepage on the right, there is a link to drug search just for MTs. It lets you do a wildcard search. I.e., audio is garbled and you hear t-max, you could type in t*max, and it would provide all drug choices. It also has a 'sounds like' search which is most excellent. You can also search for drugs by condition. This site hasn't let me down yet. Best part, it's completely up to date, and free.
    Drugs!! Works for me!
Seriously. I actually was a big procrastinator, and really suffering for years from lack of motivation. Turns out I have ADD, and have been on meds for a few months now.  Actually tripled - TRIPLED my income in these few months. Everything is just focused and easy and I am so productive, its scary...Maybe you have adult ADD. Supposedly millions do...I used to be a skeptic, but I'm a believer now!
    New generic drugs.
New generic name for viagra......................micoxafloppin.  Next.. please add.
Oh, yes! Illegal drugs are fun!
I never even did drugs when I was a stupid teenager.
Anyone know where I can get a list of new drugs
    nm
    generic drugs
I type drugs that are capped or have capital letters anywhere in them into autocorrect. Then I just type the drug just like it is generic, then autocorrect "corrects" it.
did in the past but does not do drugs...sm
I wish he'd come in here and sue your arse...for that post
