I made $8.00 an hour with no benefits. But it was worth it.

Why was it worth it?

I spent 7 years in a law office (2 of them as a paralegal), moved, couldn't find anything legal and started getting assigned to medical offices through a temp agency.

If it weren't for that old battleax Family Practitioner and his IBM, not to mention his patience to teach me the stuff I had no clue about, I wouldn't be typing this in my pajamas.

No - not worth 12 bucks an hour when you can make triple that by the line, sm
but that all depends on what company and VR platform you are talking about.
Dollar
With the dollar depreciating against all major currecies including Asian currencies is it true that outsourcing will slow down and ultimately stop as the cost advantage is becoming a ?
If I had a dollar sm

for every person who asked me about getting into this profession JUST to work at home, I could retire.  They have no idea what the profession entails, they just want to work at home, kids or no kids.  They usually see those ads.

Go to Dollar General. sm
I'm amazed what i can find there for $1. You never know what you're going to find, but cleaning supplies, household stuff, things that are definitely more than $1 even at Wal-Mart...as long as you're willing to not be picky. When the hurricanes were looming, I got mutli pack of name -brand batteries for $1, tons of candles, etc. You just have to search the whole store, but definitely worth it.
Dollar range and thanks.. sm

Trying to stay around not more than 275,000.  Would like 3 bedrooms, and 2 to 2.5 baths with an office or fourth bedroom for work.  A pool would be nice.  When we were there about three weeks ago all the new tracts were on lotteries or about a one year wait to build.  Don't really wanna hassle with the lottery since I don't live local.  How about Palm Valley?  Is that a nice place?  What would you say is the community with the best schools.  My priority is location, schools, price, community amenities, not too far from everything so hubby does not have a monstrous commute, etc.

Thanks so much for answering, it is really nice to get opinions from people who actually live there.

some of the dollar stores where everything
is a dollar carry them, that way you can afford as many as you want
$1.29 to our dollar so if the Canadian MTs...sm

If Canadian MTs are making more $$ than American MTs, it all evens out.  Also, the national health care system in Canada is currently under revision and my cousin tells me it takes her 6 months to get an appointment for an XRAY in Calgary!!!........

Canada's dollar is not as strong as our dollar in the US and I LOVE CANADA so please do not think I'm bashing that wonderful sister country of ours.

Tops dollar? 3,4,5,6,7,8,9 etc MTs sm

 line expectations/requirements up to 1800 a day, the QA/editors I saw expectations 3000 a day, 2,3,4 cents a line.

What do you suppose this comes out to hourly, say 4 pages an hour, 35 lines/page times 140 lines an hour, say 6,7,8,9. And, now what are the requirements.

.I see where they expect/require the MTs to pay for just everything, THEIR costs to do business.  Recently saw -- need 3 phone lines, provide at your cost, long distance plan buy this and that. Nonsense. .

After all this output who knows if in 30 days either side wants to continue relationship and look at all the money and equipment, Lanier $250 footpedal, thousands on some type of Lanier equipment LX something, 500 deposit to return in 6 months, this is nothing more than free interest loan for the business to fund their equipment purchase.

There is a lot of anger, frustration and disrespect out there, you can tell by the ads posted, a slave-like attitude toward the MTs.

Frustration/anger fosters errors.

AND, look at what the MTs have to put up with in terms of dictation, if we can't hear how to make production and accuracy. It is, anything goes, take a deep gulp and see if you can finish report before you need to take another breath.  Dictate at live football games and "whisper" Intentional speed dictation because they don't want to say it again, no matter how many times yuu rewind, can't make out the dictation.  Anything goes, just dictate dear doctor, just dictate, we expect/require 99.5% accuracy.

Yep, I too am frustrated and saddened.

What could be done is--- nicely state on ads, be sure and run a spell check, "smile"---- problem solved ----instead of the disrespect you feel..

What's your dollar range? I live not too far from there.
l
Yep, sometimes an entire dollar cheaper...
x
No dollar generals where I live, but
get a Rival. That's what the old one is and it certainly has done the job for a very long time. Hopefully the new ones are just as good; with any luck it will outlive me..well maybe not quite.
That is a million dollar question

I think they are just being pains.  There are some people they bend over backwards for, some they don't work with at all and unfortunately I am at the lower end of the stick, it seems.   I had a coworker quit and went to work for an on-line service because they would not let her have Sundays off so she could go to church with her family even though they had adequate coverage on Sunday and by Thursday we were always out of work.

The dollar amount may not have been the point...
but I just find it funny that those who agree all say they are making $25+ an hour. Just wondered if you would still agree with her if you weren't making the money you are making. Many of us do support our family on our wage and there is no way I could do it on $11.50. I make a few dollars more an hour than that and we are still struggling to make ends meet. I guess I was just put off by the judgmental attitude of the OP that if we can't cut it with our current pay that we just need to reevaluate our lifestyle. I live simply, but I live in a high-cost area. There is really no way I could cut back on my costs. So if I ever make less than I am now, I will be forced to look for a new job.
HAHAHA ... Now there's your million-dollar idea!
.
Million Dollar Movie? Was on every night...sm
on TV and you could watch the same movie for a week?  I remember a lot of James Cagney movies shown on that Million Dollar Movie - *lol*
Dollar store reading glasses work for me.

Just bought 4 pair at a 2.25 magnification today, as the more I do this, the worse it gets.  Started with a 1.25 a year ago.

I knew it was time when I had to wear two pair of 1.75's on top of each other so I could thread my sewing machine needle.

Ahhh, the "golden years."

I love the Dollar Store....lots of things there. nm

We just signed up for our propane for winter.. It's gone up a dollar per gallon...
from last year.  There is no shortage of propane as far as I know.  They just raise the price because they can.  We're paying 1.89 per gallon.  Thank goodness we have 2 wood stoves, but I'm sure a cord of wood will double too. . You can't win.
I have a sister who we call the "Queen of the Dollar Stores."
Bless her heart, she buys all her Christmas at dollar stores (decorations and all) and even gives me makeup or hair products that she has tried and doesn't like. She doesn't know that I know this, though. I just smile, hug her and go on. It's not that she can't afford any better, she just sweeps the dollar stores, gets everyone's gifts in about 30 minutes, and she is through for the season. I guess it's not supposed to be about the presents, but the thought (but sometimes I wonder what that thought was, LOL)!  MERRY CHRISTMAS!
it was posted friday - day late, dollar short? NM

Depends on the pay and account. My lowest average is $15.52 an hour (roughly 182.6 lines an hour) w
;'
1850 lines per 8 hour shift. 15.00 hour - no real requirement
x
I finally just saw Million Dollar Baby! Clint rocked!! nm
x
if it is feasable, split that 6-hour shift into two 3-hour shifts. sm
i work a split shift and find that i am much better able to stay focused and get more work done that way. also, being 3 months pregnant you have gone through the very tiring time of pregnancy and you should start seeing an energy perk before long.
detrimenal impact on your life. Loyalty is gone. Almighty dollar has taken its place.
dd
I start an hour or 2 early and then take an hour or 2 for dinner -nm
x
At 200 lines a day for 6 cents, you are making $1.20 a day or 0.15 hour for an 8 hour day!!!--cm
Did you mean 2,000? Even then you would only be making $1.50 if you work 8 hours a day.
$32/hour? You said $36/hour on an earlier post. Either way would be great. n/m
xx

10 reports/hour or 25 markers/hour
NM
I appreciate your responses. I had an option of line vs hour ($14/hour) but if line pays more...nm
nm
65 to 75 an hour comes to $15 an hour if u are fast
nm
A job worth doing is worth doing well ...
If you do not want to do your best, get another job.
But that is what I would do - worth the $.30
nm
what are your worth?

To do business at this rate, the hospital would have to be contracting the jobs themselve.  Most hospitals I am aware of, go through a service, which has overhead.  So to that 7 cents you have to add pay for management, building, utilites and all the other costs of doing business.  The services I work for charge anywhere from 11 to 13 cpl, so it really isn't any cheaper to go through a service or have your own accts from the hospital point of view.

And is it worth the $189?
It sounds quite interesting, but that's a lot of money to shell out for an expander. Do you find your production is a lot higher compared with regular word expanders?
For what it's worth...SM
I did say that in my opinion, drinking on the job, regardless of amount, was unprofessional and somewhat irresponsible. (I stated MY opinion of the SITUATION, not directed at anyone in particular.) I think most employers would agree with me on that one. You obviously do not. This topic has been discussed and removed several times now - if you don't like the "unpleasant" posts, why keep bringing it up? Do you need the validation from complete strangers?

Don't post the topic if you're not prepared to deal with multiple viewpoints. Simple as that.
Worth it?
YES! An ergonomic keyboard does take a couple of days to get used to, but I doubled my typing speed after those couple of days and do not get "tired" hands as quickly. I would strongly recommend getting one!:)
Yes, it is worth it! sm
We have VPI (Veterinary Pet Insurance--should be on the web) and it's great. You can pay monthly or all at once. It doesn't help much with the little bumps and bruises, but our boxer had a major ACL repair done and it saved us tons of money. She's worth it!
for what its worth
your marital relationship is the most important relationship in your life- its who you chose - you din't choose your parents, siblings or kids- everyone deserves to be valued and respected in that most important relationship- if you are being repeatedly hurt by your spouse or you are hurting your spouse -after you are aware that behavior is causing pain, no matter what it is - then you are not valuing your relationship or being valued in that relationship... Either way, you need to do something about it- get counselling at the least
Not worth it!

In my opinion, it would be better to wait for something that pays a little more.  At 6 cpl you are going to work your butt off.  I mean, if you think about it that's what the people in India are getting paid, either 5.5 cpl or 6 cpl.  I think American MTs are worth more, much more, but that's just my opinion.  If your current job is not too, too bad where you can't wait it out, I would say look around and give it a little more time.  Gook luck!!

Is being an MT really worth it?
I've been doing it for about 10.5 years and have interacted with a number of fellow MTs. One thing I notice is that very few of the wonderful MTs I've known have been WITHOUT depression, anxiety, and/or panic disorders.

Is it possible that sitting in front of a CRT doing the same thing all day every day in complete physical isolation isn't healthy?

There are lots of reasons I want out of this business. There's one. Have a good day :)
worth it
You are right about being isolated. Right now I have my 3-year-old at home with me, but in a couple of years, it is going to be me and the cat until the kids come home. I'm not really worried about it though. I know a few moms and other MTs can call if I get lonely.

As for the depression and axiety, I had before coming into this profession. You just have to take every day as it comes and enjoy the sunshine when its there.
Very worth it
I bought mine of ebay about 7 years ago for around $700 new and love it. It is well worth the money as it will never wear out.
I tried it. It is only worth it if you -
want to read about how wonderful it is that they are now training and credentialling overseas MTs. That is the truth. If you don't believe me, you can waste your money on it.
Not worth it
I didn't quit smoking with Wellbutrin, but used the generic nicotine gum 4 mg then 2 mg, which tasted awful, but stopped the waves of rage from quitting smoking. Wellbutrin made me giddy for a few hours, then I crashed almost instantly and would become solemn and depressed, which made me want to smoke. Does anyone know why there is a drop off like that? Is that normal with these types of drugs? I don't take anything in the way of medications unless I am deathly ill.
Yes, well worth it (SM)
It was definitely worth the $15K, but after years of trying all the other fertility treatments and having them *fail* (total of all of those was probably $10 to 15K as well) it was just such a risk. I knew if it worked it would be worth every dime and then some, but if it failed it would only send me into a deeper depression. Not a good thing. Thank goodness for happy endings. Make that thank GOD!

I'm so glad to hear other success stories. No one knows the agony of infertility unless they have walked in our shoes :-(

Thanks for the post.

Would it be worth it?

Hi everyone. Been reading your postings and thought you could help. I presently work in a clinic but have been mulling the idea of working from home. Would it be reasonable to assume I could make at least $9.00 an hour working from home (realizing I would get paid by cpl) Should I quit my job and go for it?

Thanks

Here is my exp for what it's worth: SM

I used to do what you do....I felt like I had a lot to offer, never had a problem getting a job that paid a good wage, great insurance, great vacation.

I got into MT as a fluke and for the 1st 5 years I made a ton of money and worked at home.  Along the way, I became less desirable as an administrative assistant--had been out of the field for too long, I think.

When the MT pay started going down and I found I had to work 12-14 hours a day to make less than what I was making in the beginning, I really have tried to get an admin. asst. job again, but I am losing the job to people who have been employed right along the way while I was here at home.

Stay with this job--ride it out.  You are likely to have to work 12 hours a day or more to get your lines in and keep your benefits if you come home to work.

What you are worth
I don't believe it is true that MT is a bad field or a declining field. It is a great field and anyone who is capable of going through the education and gaining experience will find it is well worth it. Negative attitudes make every job unappealing.

Get the training and check out the companies. I have been an MT for 17 years and have always made no less than 50,000 a year. I only work 8 hours a day, no weekends. I love the job.
Is it worth it?

I posted a message yesterday on the New MT board.  I haven't seen a response.  Can anyone give me advice?

I am disabled and need to train in a new profession.  After some reading and researching, I wonder if I should learn MT.

With so many jobs going to India, Philipines, etc is there really work (and I mean work that will pay me enough money to more than survive) in the US?

With Dragon, is it easier for non English speaking persons to transcribe?  I am really nervous.  I can't waste time and money learning something that is no longer offered here.Is it worth it?

I apologize for the redundancy.  I am new to posting, and this is my third try.
