Having trouble staying on task to produce lines?
I do.  I was beginning to think I'd developed adult ADD, but I think I found the cure.  It's a free download called Home Typist 4.01.  This program is a small utility application which makes each keystroke sound like the strike of a typewriter key.  I cannot believe how much this has helped my line count.  There was something about the typewriter sound that just drove all distractions from my mind.  My fingers were flying, and believe me, they haven't flown for years!  This was my first full day with the program.  I had my usual mix of good and bad with one really long, horrible resident who had no clue what he wanted to say (it took me an hour and a half to get through his dictation), and I still increased my count today by a little over 300 lines!  I kid you not.  Windows XP is not listed as a system it can be used on, but I assure you, it works quite well with XP.

I'm fed up too, but it is our job to produce
a good product, despite a horrendous dictator, poor sound quality, etc.   It doesn't matter if their English were perfect, that isn't really the issue, it is the accent and unfortunately that isn't going to change.
Yes, I do. I produce so much more this way. sm
I can't keep my butt in the chair for 8 hours straight. Never could...I work better in short bursts at a time. It works great for me.

You need to try it...you won't go back to 8 hours every again.
inexpensive produce
Out here in CA, there is a Mexican supermarket, Vallarata (not sure if spelling is accurate but it is close)..Anyway, they are all over Southern CA.  The produce is so inexpensive, Im amazed.  Ten pounds of potatoes for $1.00, three pounds of tomatoes for $1.00, five pounds of onions for $1.00, on and on.  Also lots of other stuff in the store is inexpensive.  Their produce is so fresh.  If you live in the Southern CA area, check out this store.  I go in there and walk out with bags of produce and breads, etc., for about $10.00.  I even have seen two Indian doctors I used to work for at a nearby hospital, LOL, they were buying produce too.
No, if you cannot produce enough to make the money you need,
It's not the industry's fault some do not have the aptitude to make what they want.

I just don't see how it is possible to produce 3800+ straight typing in a day
I'm not saying you didn't.  I just don't see HOW.  I'm a pretty high producer myself, but I worked with a national once that didn't pay spaces and my line count dropped from 1700 lpd to 1100.  How in the world do you manage 3800+ with no spaces?
FYI - I produce high quality reports because I
take the extra time to make sense of garbage that is dictated.  I'm saying that I will not do it from now on.  It averages about $10 to $11/hr to make "high quality."  It has gotten to this point because people like you let MTSOs walk all over them because you feel it's "your job." ---  Ya know what ---- Keep your job, I'm outta here ---
Why? M-TEC & Andrews produce the absolute best grads.

ask the mortgage company to produce the note
Just heard about this tactic this week. Most mortgages have been sold and resold and if you ask them to produce the original note you signed on the mortgage most of the time they can't and it will buy you some time. Do a search on it.
It wouldn't load with my Office. Somehow it wouldn't "read" my 2003 Basic, although sm
technical couldn't find anything wrong with my software. They really tried hard. I see so many people that like Escription, I'm sorry not to be able to use it. Hopefully I can get Office Pro on my next machine, and maybe use it then. I could upgrade, but I'm still not sure it would work.
Either produce a signed, notarized promisory note or

MS does not produce a new operating system every year, trust me on that.

Vista was 5 years in the making, which is pretty much the norm for most reliable Software.

5HTP is a natural product that helps the body to produce Seratonin sm
in a natural way. The chemical SSRIs do it differently. But 5HTP is the closest thing to a natural antidepressant agent you can find.
Wouldn't that mean that you simply wouldn't have to print out everything?

Aaahhhh, now I get it. Gross lines vs. Character lines. I guess I've just been conditioned to
think in terms of character lines.  One of the perils of working as an IC for somebody who defines what a line is versus owning your own company and defining it yourself.  After working for someone else for 15 years, maybe it's time to bust out on my own.
That is a lot of work/lines for 2 people. I do 3000 lines per day sm
if you times that by 30 days that only comes to 90K lines a month, that is working 7 days a week including weekends. I don't think 2 people can handle that.
900 lines is below 1100 lines, where the bonus starts.
x
Gross lines include all lines containing
printable characters, so a full line and a line with one word on it are charged equally. Straight lines are basically the same as gross lines, but with this method of counting the blank lines are counted as well (again, equally). I have only had one company pay this way, and they are a middle man. I would think the charge would be about the same as for gross lines, and that not too many offices will want their lines counted this way (the one I worked on was probably inherited from someone who had counted the lines that way, so just continued).
The norm is 1 minute = 10 lines; 10 min = 100 lines - sm
granted this varies per dictator. More lines if a fast talker, less if a slow talker.
I went from 2400 lines to 1800 lines

a day when I switched from clinic (through an MTSO)  to hospital work. Not only was the clinic work easier with more macros (and less providers to learn, 12 vs 300+), but I was typing in straight Word (as opposed to Softmed/Chart Script).  So you see, it really varies depending upon the type of work as well as the platform used. That said, I am so much happier typing the 1800 lines per day (I make over $15 per hour plus an incentive for any lines in excess of 1200 per day) plus a great health package/benefits, AND approximately 5 weeks of paid time off per year.  In my opinion, hospitals really are the best employers WHEN they appreciate the work we do.

My advice for you is not to judge a job by any one criterion but rather the entire picture. The 'extra's can really add up.

Good luck in your job!

Which is the one where they are sc*&ing us the standard lines or the qualified lines? SM
Mine show up as STD when I pull up my transcription log.  But I see now there is STD/QT....  So which is the one where they are ripping us off, standard or qualified?  Need to know.  I am about to switch companies and I will not do if they are actually taking lines from me.  Thanks guys.
Question versus gross lines versus 65-character lines....

I have always charged or been paid by 65 or 60 character lines or per letter or space typed, but have never been paid or charged per gross line.

What is the advantage of this?  If I were to charge 11 cents per 65-character line including spaces, what does this figure out to for an average line rate and how do you do this calculation?

I'm wondering if it is financially beneficial for me to bill by gross line or to keep it the way I have it.  I do know some accounts will only pay per 65-character line, as this was the deal my first own account I recently acquired.  They were adamant on a 65-character line, but didn't specify with or without spaces and I personally would never not charge for spaces.

Thanks for explaining this.  I appreciate it and hope everyone has a speedy day.

The work you produce is the same whether you work
if you're happier at home, your work is probably even better. Why should the product you produce (i.e., a transcribed medical document) be worth any less because it was produced at home, rather than in an office?

You see, this is just one more 'excuse' for paying workers less, or for accepting that low pay if you are a worker. Have MT wages been going up? NO. Best-case scenario, they're holding steady. (i.e, no raise for many years, right?) Worst case scenario, they're going lower and lower, especially if you end up editing.

So if you're getting paid less for working at home than you are for driving to an office, that pretty much cancels out any savings there might have been. And you have to think 2, 3, 5 years down the road. If you still get no raise, and the cost of living continues to rise, how are you going to offset that? The decreasing pay and increasing cost of living are eventually going to come to a breaking point. And judging by what I read on this board every day, I'd say we're just about there.

DON'T SELL YOURSELF SHORT just because you work from home. It cheapens the entire MT field.

Word count: 824 lines. DocuCount count: 897 lines.
I just counted the same file in Word and then in DocuCount, and DocuCount was higher than Word.

Just as an aside.
sure she wouldn't
I am sure that you will always have control over your daughter and her behavior, even when you aren't around.  And if she ever does act differently than you believe she would and has some serious consequences because of it, I guess you guys will just deserve it.  Right?
I wouldn't
unless you had been scammed by her. SOunds like plenty of people have already called, that have had real dealings. Up to you I guess.
I wouldn't sm

count my chickens before they hatch.  It's way hard to get a line count when you type a report or 2, sit and wait for an hour or 2 for another report to come up, etc. etc.  If you get 200 lines in a day at 9 cpl, why that adds up to a whopping $18.00.

Good luck, you're gonna need it.

I wouldn't, but that's just me.
There are many ways to serve one's country. It is not necessary to be in the military to assume a role of protecting and helping your fellow countrymen.

I would no sooner turn back if I had heard the story you speak of than I would if I was a soldier in Iraq amid all the suicide/car bombings.

It's all about character. A soldier has no choice; it's his job; he has to stay. If a civilian will take the chance of being robbed of his material possessions to help those who are fighting for mere existence, to me that is a true American.
I wouldn't let her do this!

JMHO, of course, but your daughter's life is worth way more than what it will cost you to pick her up each day.

New drivers, young kids, NO WAY; recipe for disaster.

My daughter is 15, and her friends will all be driving before her, and she thinks she's gonna be riding to and from school with them---wrong!  I know it's hard and this seems much easier, but right now, I'd keep shuttling her home! She's your baby, after all!

I wouldn't want him to just because of the
I am with the poster who says follow your instincts. You have the answers within yourself. Listen to your own gut feelings. You are there watching the situation. We will only inject our own beliefs, fears, and experiences. Plus we aren't there to see what's actually happening. You wouldn't post if there were not a valid concern. I wouldn't allow it just because of the germs. Even if I felt it was harmless, I would have him shower first before bathing with a female child. Just because of the possibilty of passing germs. I wouldn't bath with my daughter because I didn't want the possibilty of a yeast infection passing to her when she was an infant or toddler.

That's just my opinion, however. You really have to listen to your own voice on issues like this one. Best wishes.

Mother2Jazzy
I wouldn't
I went with them for a short period of time.  I asked for PT to make sure we had a "fit" but they said they only hire PT.    I took the FT and for the first 9 days had absolutely no work, one report per day.  They said they couldn't give me a backup until I was off QA, yet I couldn't get off QA until I had enough reports.  Also they promise a training bonus on the first check and I did not get it and had to write to the Attorney General.
I wouldn't buy anything until I know what the
company I work for wants me to have. You could spend a lot of money on equipment you won't need. Another thing you might need is a C-phone or something like that, but some companies provide those too. Just wait until you know what you'll need for where you work.
If you are IC, I wouldn't think so. nm

wouldn't let me put it on lol
100% agree is what that should have read
I wouldn't (sm)
My six-year-old still wears the Goodnites at nighttime.  I tried allowing him to wear underwear to bed, but it just interrupted his sleep and my sleep to get up change him, change the bed, etc., etc.  Sometimes boys take a little longer to be dry all night.  My nephew was that way and I remember growing up my brother was that way as well.  My honest opinion is why put yourself through lack of sleep for everyone involved.  My son goes to the bathroom right before bedtime.  Sometimes he wakes up dry, sometimes he doesn't.  I would be more concerned with staying dry and clean during waking hours.
No I wouldn't.

Wouldn't say that....
Guilt makes you do odd things and is usually where you trip up.
Thanks - I had tried that one, but it wouldn't
convert the disk for some reason. I think there is something wrong with the CD. I'm not sure.
I wouldn't use it.
It takes all of two seconds for me to type in the time I'm at if needed for a blank. I wouldn't buy software to do it for me.
I wouldn't. sm

I've been an MT now for a year.  I went to one of the big schools and I have learned so much in the year I've worked.  Really, you may feel completely confident and ready coming out of your course, but it is so different once you are really working.  There are small details of this job that just cannot be taught 'in the classroom'.

Sorry, but it really is not feasible.  Even if you didn't mind taking a hit financially I'd not want to be responsible for the mistakes you will inevitably make as a inexperienced MT.

Also, even at a lower rate I would think most doctors/hospitals are going to see your lack of any 'real world' experience to be a huge red flag.

Another thing is that though I'm not running my own MT business, I'm guessing it isn't something you can just 'do on the side'.  If you can't quit your current job to work in-house you are probably not going to be able to have the time to run your own MT business.  If you are a sole IC for a doctor/hospital that means no vacation, no weekends, no nothing so long as that doctor/hospital has reports to be typed.  You'd be on call 24/7 for any stat reports, ect.

My advice would be to REALLY think about what you are considering doing.

We wouldn't be
We could not go into their country and do anything - so it is doubtful that the shoe would ever be on the other foot. I had a friend who tried to get work in Mexico as an MT - but she found that she had to learn Spanish - so she gave it up and moved to Alaska. Eskimo transcription.
I wouldn't have known but...
My neighbor came knocking at my door after the first plane hit and told me to turn on my TV. Just as I did the second plane hit. I moved the TV to my office for the rest of the day.

You know what, though? My DH, who works outside the home, did not have a clue until I called him.
I wouldn't do it.

If you were looking, wouldn't you want to know
prospective employer? If you're looking for a job, you are interviewing them just as much as they're interviewing you.
I got it the AT&T DSL when it was still SBC. I wouldn't ..sm
have anything else. My internet has never been down for technical problems, only a weather-related ice storm that knocked out all power for several days. What I like about it is that you don't have to have a tech come to your house; merely make a phone call and a tech will walk you through your problem right then and there so no time is lost. Most I've waited on hold was a matter of minutes. My modem did go out about 1-1/2 years ago, but they brought a new one to my home and got it up and running the next morning, as I recall.

I have the most expensive internet, which is their fastest rate and wouldn't have anything else ($34.99). I would highly recommend it over any cable company! Good luck!
I wouldn't have said anything either...sm
Do we tell them how many employees they can hire??
I sure wouldn't. VR will end up doing most, SM
of the typing there, too, leaving document editing work. In court reporting, that would be a lower-skill-level work (while learning MT, I also had to transcribe legal depositions from tapes, which required no special training beyond standard office skills--definitely not like trying to do MT). If this turns out to be the case, it's going to pay significantly less as the current high skill level will simply cease to matter. Sorry.
No, I wouldn't do it, especially just for
xx
I wouldn't have had three, I would have only had one sm
I'm sorry to hear about that. I am not sure what you would do but i think I would start with the local police department, not 9-1-1 though, would look up their non-emergency number and they can probably tell you who to contact.
I wouldn't do it any other way

It's such a time saver it's unbelievable.  You can only do your federal taxes through this site.  Your individual state department of taxation probably has a site that you can use to do online payment.   Google your state taxation and revenue and you'll probably get the site for it.

I do all my taxes electronically.  Just make sure you print or electronicaly save all confirmations as backup.
