Sometimes if you don't think about it so hard and just say the sentence, you will use the correct tense without understanding why. (What I originally did until I picked it apart.)

Go back and look at the post by Riki. It's kind of like that; an unspoken referral to separate things (in that case, units) making up a whole (one thing). The same with the pounds. You could likely tell if the writer/speaker meant 50 pounds as a whole or a bunch of separate things/weights lifted separately.

WAS if referring to a whole; Were in the case of separate parts.

I kind of enjoy these types of questions even though this one has obviously made many of us confused. :)
