It's headed your way.

Have a good afternoon!

Not big headed?
Maybe you need a dictionary - get your head out of BOS for awhile - because you definitely are arrogant.

I'm an "old timer" as you call us - been doing this for 30 years, started with a Selectric, carbon paper, and plastic belts. My first dictation was an Indian neurologist whose own secretary couldn't understand him. That was it - no training, no MT school. I was an intelligent person who could spell, type and had speak articulately. That's the kind of person who used to be hired in the "old" days to do MT. They paid us a real wage with real benefits while we learned.

I'm very computer literate and probably know the BOS as well as you do. I remember when we were able to transcribe an excellent report without the BOS because it didn't exist, and the MDs were very happy with our work and they treated us with respect.

The Book of Style is NOT carved in stone. As its name intimates, it a style guide, and style is up for interpretation.

BTW, people are defensive when they are attacked. It doesn't necessarily mean they are the ones in the wrong. Try being less offensive.
I'm hot headed, but not that hot headed! :)
I know what I have, and I am keeping them FOR NOW. However to make myself try to do the work right now (the day after this happened) is very, very hard. I have SPOILED them for seven years. what irks me the most is that I skip vacations, i skip girls nights... simply because I HAVE TO WORK for them. That was my choice yes, but what happened to loyalty? I would expect this from a big company, but not from a close-knit group that I thought it was. Apparently I was wrong, and like my dad said, it's a business, they dont care about you.
How sad

And I'm now actively seeking other career opportunities because I refuse to be taking advantage of, maybe that's too much pride... but i DESERVE better. :)
I need help........email headed your way! nm
:)
I'm headed back....
for chemistry (pre-med). It's gonna be a long and hard several years, but it will be worth it.

Good luck to you on your new career! :)
Well, at least you are headed in the right direction! sm

I have no clue what to even get started with. I had thought about accounting, but I'm really not all that great with numbers.  And to tell you the truth, it would be nice to have some sort of job where I can physically move around.  I think the sitting is really getting to me!  I swear I'm developing ADHD in my "old age".... ha!  Old at 39!  But regardless, I know I need to have some variety and movement in my job.

I have considered becoming a P.A.  Would need to take some upgrading on my physics and again, math is a weak point and I would have to work extra hard on that point.

Otherwise, I'm clueless for ideas.  I have horses and really love working with them, but it's pretty hard to make a decent living with horses.  I also enjoy horticulture, but I live on the prairies and horticulture is rarely do-able when it's blistering cold outside unless you've spent millions on indoor facilities!

Ideas?  Thoughts?   Help!

Well, I have 3 rambuncious (sp), bull headed boys. sm
Of course, they knew everything then and know everything now. I couldn't pick their friends but boy I sure pounded into their heads that as long as their friends were at my house, they abided by my rules and my boys were responsible for their friends' behaviors. If their friends acted out of line, my boys were responsible for telling them to get the hell out--didn't have much trouble when I gave the kids that responsibility. Sometimes their friends weren't the cream of the crop or came from not very well to do families, but they always acted appropriately at our house, then and now. Have earned a lot of respect from my kids' friends that way. Sometimes, they spent more time at our house than they did their own. My kids weren't angels but they didn't turn out to be felons or junkies or drunks, either.
It's headed for the potty if anyone accepts rates like this. By saying NO sm
you make a statement and all those who say NO stand up for their rights of earning a decent wage.
*slowly* - hey, I'm off-duty! ;-)
xx
Maybe jury duty?
nm
besides jury duty
He could have very old tickets that were never paid.
jury duty

Has anyone gotten out of jury duty from being an MT? I get paid by line...no health insurance....no work no pay......Any advise for when I have to go present myself.

TIA.

Jury Duty
I work in house but still do not get full benefits.  It is too late to fill out paperwork. They didn't seem to care. Now I have to present myself in front of them that day....
Jury duty

I have been excused 4 times in the past  year just by writing a letter, have a small MTSO.  But last time they said that was the last time I would be excused.  so who knows what happens if I get called again. I don't get called for 45 years and then 4 times in one year.  Weird.   They will let you off, have your service or docs write letters also if you need to.

Jury Duty
I'm from PA and I went the day I was supposed to show up for the preliminary questioning. After all questions were answered, the very last one was "If you are selected for jury duty, would this be a hardship on you?" Of course, I answered yes and the reason for it. I was excused.
jury duty

For those who have had jury duty, when you get interviewed and questioned, how does that go? Are you alone with this person? Does everyone hear your answers?

Thanks!

jury duty
I was selected for jury duty three times in one year, and chosen for one trial. During the interview process, you are in the room with all the jury selectees and your answers are not private. Everyone hears. It is just a simple pretty much do you agree or disagree type of thing. If I remember right, we filled out questionaires previous to being selected for the possible jurers. That is how they decide who to pick from. but the interview part is not one on one, but with everyone. No biggee...at least I didn't think so. I was chosen for a jury trial and it lasted about a week, but it was not a sensational trial and no sequester was needed, but it did take time away from work and that was costly. What I received for mileage did not begin to cover what I lost for appearing and it took almost a month to get the money. Just my experience. I don't know if every state/county/city is different.
Jury Duty.
Here in Florida, they had the judge, DA and defense attorney with the defendant in the court room along with all the prospective jurors. They explained what the case was about, how long the trial was supposed to last and if anyone would have a hard ship being on the jury for that long. They then asked everyone questions about drinking and driving since it was a DUI case. You had to raise your hand when they asked the group question since it was a yes or no type question. Sometimes they would pick on you to elaborate on what happened in your case. They also asked individual questions and everyone gets to hear your answers. I want to be on a jury but due to my brothers being well known to the DA, judges and police officers because of their troublemaking I never get picked.
jury duty
Have any of you been called to jury duty?

In the past I had been excused because I care for my disabled husband, but because I don't have to hand feed him and take him to he bathroom and dress him, then I cannot be excused.

Just finished jury duty....
Ended up getting almost as much reimbursement for jury duty as I would have working, when mileage was figured in. Only had to be there 2 days, so it wasn't a hardship. Met some interesting people and was overall a positive experience. I was VERY reluctant, but was glad I did it.
Jury Duty Mandatory
Here in NYS jury duty is mandatory. You can get out of it once or twice, I believe, but then you have to go, they won't excuse you any more. Hopefully, your State is more lenient.
I've had jury duty twice....sm
the first time was a civil case and the second time it was a drug bust case. The first time the potential jurors were just asked generalized questions like "do you know anyone here in the courtroom" or "have you been involved in a similar case before?" The drug bust case they asked more specific questions. Both times they asked the questions where everyone could hear responses. I've been told this is pretty much the normal unless you're being interviewed for a high profile case.

Good luck and remember that in most places only about 10% of the people called for potential jury duty actually ever serve on a jury.
Jury duty in California
Everybody heard the answers to the questions; what did I do for a living, have I ever been a juror, had I ever been in a car accident, things that might pertain to that certain case.  It was a car accident in a parking lot.  I actually got chosen for the panel and was fighting staying awake through the whole thing it was soooooo boring.  After sitting in that hard chair for nearly 8 hours on the first day, I got up and could hardly walk.  I had developed a DVT sitting in that same spot all day and could no longer be a juror (oh darn).  Because of this, I cannot be called for jury duty anymore.
I was called to jury duty once, but
I sat there all day long with the judge being one of the attorneys I used to work with/for a few years earlier. I knew I couldn't be picked because of that, but they made me sit there anyway. I did get paid for sitting there all day, so it wasn't that bad. I really wish I could serve. Maybe there'll be a next time.
That is what I thought! Maybe just something stupid like jury duty?!?! nm
.
Where I live jury duty notices do not come
certified mail.  Maybe he has a ticket he hasn't paid.  Has he had a small claims against anyone - could be payment owed him.
Where I am, using Winscribe, the supervisor on duty routine gives updates (sm)
with who is working on a particular account, how many jobs there are, if any have been kicked back (she/he can tell as they are out of sequence, obviously taken into someones local queue and then returned to the pool. The name of those working at any given time is announced, this lets us know if someone comes on board during unscheduled hours without clocking in.

It is great for me as I follow the rules. We are not to take jobs into the local queue (cherrypicking) and we are not to work outside of scheduled hours unless it is granted and there is ample work for the person coming on board so they do not take away from the regularly scheduled MTs. I love my job!
My jury duty papers didn't come in certified. sm
They were just left in the mailbox.
that's my routine to a T, 'cept I walk the dog instead of doing catbox duty. :) nm
s
that's "lost" my work, we also have a heavy duty generator though odds are
substantial period of time that we are also without a phone.....so it would be a bit hard to work. Granted I could drive to the office if necessary (1 hour away).
You do know that they offshore, right?? Despite what they tell you -
about the hospitals asking, other hospitals have no idea that the accounts are being transcribed offshore!
They offshore and looking to do more. I have
nearly 20 years' experience in acute care, can do even the most difficult ESLs and they offered me 8 cpl, 8.5 cpl over 18,000 lines/pay period.
does not offshore
AccuStat Carolinas does not for any of their clients
They offshore. nm

Try not to offshore.
They might get it done faster/cheaper, but it is going to look like crap. How happy would your clients be then?
All About Offshore

Sending the work offshore can and does work for a couple of reasons.

Firstly the time zone difference, while the US sleeps we are transcribing and the reports back on the specialists' desks, so to speak, when they arrive at work the next morning.

I do not take issue with the fact that you want to keep the work on your shores, but I do take issue with the fact that you think the rest of the world is Third World and incapable of producing work of a high standard. Believe me, there is a world out there and its name is not the US, contrary to what you might think.

Even if they never offshore....sm
when their contracts renew they will be competing against the offshoring companies and the companies offshore already who will bid them under the table and they'll lose the account.

There are several interesting threads, articles, and blogs across the internet concerning the dying industry of the small MTSOs because of not having the capital to keep up with the technology and equipment needed and the decreasing line rates and increasing turnaround times that the facilities are demanding - and big national companies can offer them these things, so they can blow the small MTSOs out of the water.

There is no such thing as security in any job, but the MT industry is on even shakier ground. When your small MTSO has to sell out or loses their contracts and you lose your $36/hour client, you will find that very hard to replace when you go out into the new world of MT and try to find a comparable job today... there just aren't many out there and those that are have hundreds of MTs applying for them.

Now that's getting real...
Offshore
This is sooooooo not true. I work an afternoon shift and have friends/coworkers who work the midnight shift. Despite, this, even during the day shifts, the company we work for is sending all of the easy work offshore, leaving us domestic suckers to do ALL of the ESLs and otherwise hard work. This work was being stripped off daily, in ever increasing amounts --- now it is gone completely. Most of us do not mind doing all of the work as it comes --- but it absolutely sucks that we are being treated this way.
Offshore VR (sm)
I would think so. Personally, I think VR is better suited to newbie MT's and non-English-speaking transcriptionists because VR has a tendency to get the medical words right while totally mangling sentence structure, grammar, proper nouns, and other nuances of transcription that are more easily picked up by novices. Since the medical words have a better track record in VR, it thus becomes easier to bring in low-paid trainees.
Are you offshore?
Your grammer is soooooo bad,  I can't take you seriously.
Oh, I have too, for offshore ads. But not U.S.

Oh so you are another offshore supporter?
Sounds like YOU may be the creep.
Offshore Ad on this site?
I was just over on the State Boards forum and saw an Ad for AAAMT saying they charge 5.9 cents per line.  Unless they have monkeys working for bananas, they must have offshore workers because we could not put bread on the table for what they would have to pay after Charging 5.9 cents per line.  They offer everything that the big MTSOs offer at 1/3rd to 1/4th the price so I think we can be sure they are not hiring US MTs.   I believe MTSOs usually pay the MT around one-third what they charge so at 5.9 cents per line, we would be making around 2 cents a line.  Ads like this make me question this site's loyalty to US MTs.
You are offshore and got caught.
/
Nope, even more would end up offshore.
//
They also offshore to Trinidad.
y
Transcend does not offshore
but they are going to voice recognition which has a lot of bugs along with a paycut to about 4 cents a line. There are some other posts on this page about good companies because somebody else asked about them and they made a decision about it. It is probably your best answer. Sorry about the job loss. Why do things always happen around the holidays? Good luck to you.
Don't they offshore big time?
I've never worked there, but I've heard they will undercut American MTs just to send the work overseas.
