I think I smell either VR on the easy stuff, or offshoring of the easy stuff.

I do not think that they 'approve it, they just send it for editing...sm
If it is full of errors, the doctor blames it on the system or the equipment, not on himself, that's the PROBLEM.
If it is like you say, then I think that the client pays for straight transcription and ASR the same rate, since he does not know if it is straight or ASR. He is just dictating.
    Am I right or wrong?
I do not get the easy stuff anymore...
Nothings wrong, i've been told i'm just about the best MT.  I haven't let it go to my head or anything, but they're right.  I still believe some of you are guessing, thats just my opinion.

For this account, I charge 0.12 cpl. It is very easy clinic stuff with good dictators, but ...

I also do tapes which are horrible so I'm considering upping my line rate especially if all this aggravation keeps up.  When I first took the work, I thought I was being fair because the work was so easy, but then they asked me to do tapes and then work specific hours, print and deliver work three times a week.  I wish I would have addressed more than TAT and line rate in the original contract.  I do charge them a $5 per delivery fee because of gas prices, but still I think I'm getting the shaft.

Oh well, live and learn.  I am negotiating for a local doctor's office here in my hometown, small one doctor office, and I'm here to tell you I will be negotiated every little detail right down to paper and toner charges!

Isnt it easy to burn through 500 lines per hour, though, editing?

    Money in editing
The new money is in editing.  State agencies are sending work to another state for editing, as they will get it done in 24 hours.  Not medical, just state government stuff.  I was not able to get more details, but sounds like the new money place to be.
ExText is great. Access all the old stuff. Easy to insert cc's. Line counts can sometimes

    Easy easy money they are!

I don't mind seeing those puppies filter in at all.  Same for H&Ps.  They are always different though, so can't really pop in the same pre-formatted autotext, but it's usually WHAMMO 2-3 pages at a time.  Give them a shot...you may just be pleasantly surprised!

Does anybody make money VR editing?
I am considering taking a position doing this and I wonder if you can make a living at it. A poster below said that if you are a fast typist you will lose money, but if you are a 150-200 lph typist can you break even? I would like to hear from anyone who actually does VR editing either full-time or part-time. What's the scoop?
oh my gosh, run, do not send them money - it is a scam. nm

thank you both! money is an easy enough gift sm
but i think i will keep it a little lesser amt as they have only been friends about 6 mos as we just moved here. all the other girls in their group of friends are part of the quinceanera so i wasn't sure what my daughter and i needed to wear, etc. it is indoors at a church according to the invitation. is "merengue" the same as dancing? i think it sounds like a lot of fun and can think of lots of other things for my daughter and i to do while in the area as well. never had a good vacation so the 2 of us will enjoy ourselves. i am thankful they gave us enough heads up (almost 2 months) notice to prepare financial wise for the trip. sounds like a blast though and a really good experience for my 14yo to attend.
It is NOT an easy way to make money
and most companies advertising at-home training and promising the moon are out for your money. Medical transcription is a CAREER and not a JOB. Stick with engineering and do some crafting on the side to make "extra money."

Been editing VR for about 5 years now and absolutely love it!
I also have CTS - it has done wonders not having to transcribe my fingers to the bone.

Yes, you can make awesome money editing VR; however, it depends on the platform and line rate. Personally, I have been workin on eScription's EditScript for the past 5 years and absolutely love it and can't say enough about it.

You can tend to get a little bored from time to time, just like with anything else. When that happens, I take frequent breaks to rejuvenate.

Good luck. I hope it works out for you.
Yeah, all that stuff is hard to deal with. I told my mom years ago to - sm
make a list of what she wanted to go to who-- she poo poo'd it saying people shouldn't fight over the stuff, etc.and that should not be necessary. Now luckily my brothers and I have not fought over things, as the only daughter my dad let me have what clothes and coats I wanted (plus my brothers had no desire for this and I was the only one the right size too), though he wanted to keep her jewelry for some strange reason. He did divvy out a few things between me and my 2 sisters-in-laws; but held onto the expensive stuff. At the time he had plans to give it to his then new girlfried, which needless to say pissed me off a lot. He also wanted my mom's fur coats back for the same reason, though he never formally asked he did heavily hint, and I did not volunteer them. He has since married this lady and FINALLY has come to the conclusion that he shouldn't give her my mom's good jewelry, though he has not given it to me as yet which is what she wanted...she told me many, many times she wanted me to have her stuff with a few things to go to my sisters-in-law (which my dad did do). So I don't know if I will ever get her other jewelry or not (I am a gold and silversmith to boot so I love jewerly as it is), my dad might have sold it for all I know, I hope not. I don't want it for the $$ but for sentimental reasons and to pass onto my 2 daughters eventually. One of these days I will get the nerve to ask my dad about it, not the easiest of things to discuss.
Hi, Fellow Georgian. I've been editing for years SM
and love it. This is a good move for you once you get used to the common corrections and work out your own ways of making them quickly. Like programming in a hot key or keystroke combo for backing up to erase a common, insert a period, and drop in a "The" to make two sentences from one runon. And so on.

It's great that your account is already trained on most dictators. So often, the speech recognition system is just beginning to learn the dictators and most reports are a mass of mistakes. People usually get paid more to train the system, but it can be irritating at that point. At your point, you'll breeze through twice the reports you used to, dropping in corrections here and there, and it'll be much easier on your hands and wrists. Plus, once you get used to it, if you read fast and speed up the dictation you'll likely make more money editing than transcribing. I do. Enjoy.
I did and was told that 6 years of editing experience wasn't enough?!?

As someone who lost their husband almost 2 years ago, I can tell you that no amount of money could

ever replace my best friend and husband.  Yes, I have tried the dating thing, but to tell the truth here, it's not the same and I don't think anyone could ever replace the father my children lost at such an early age.

I found out a long time ago that there are two kinds of editing.. one is editing MTs work (like QA)
and the other is editing as in VR. I have done VR editing, but when I put down this as experience on a resume, I was asked by the HR person if this meant that I had "edited" other MTs work. I think there is a lot of confusion out there and I wish they would just keep that as QA instead of calling it editing. Just be clear in what you want to edit as most companies that expect you to "edit" other MTs in a QA position do require you have a lot of experience. If you just going for VR editing, which is what Transcend has available and there are a few companies out there doing VR, none of which I think really require much experience as it is easy to learn. Hope I made some sense and it can be pretty confusing on how companies use the term "editing" thus it effects their expectations as far as experience goes.

Editing is the higher skill. I earn more editing SM
because I'm able to produce more--if the company doesn't adjust the way production's figured down and down again to keep the account from going elsewhere (when that happened to me on EditScript with no explanation of why my income was dropping, I went elsewhere also).

Make money? I'm not making any money because of my decision. You read my reasoning
You can agree with me or not, but don't make false assumptions please.
Well, Word is easy to buy and easy to install. Word 97 works great. Cheap. SM
I still would not work anywhere I could not use a spell checker with grammar checker and a Steadman's Medical Spell Checker.

IF they want people to TRANSCRIBE MEDICAL REPORTS, then I guess they better get the programs they need.

It's like probably 110% easier to buy and install Word 97 than to try to program their own programming. And, yes, I do mean Microsoft Word 97. Why? Because you can install it unlimited times, in case you need to install the operating system again. And it has a few features that Microsoft, in its un-wisdom, took away in Word 2000 and 20003 and 2007. So, yes, I'd go with Word 97 for its cheapness and it works better than the later versions. Just my opinion, with 20 years experience being an MT. So what if they "don't have it" on their computer? It's easy to get.
Question about Editing for those who do editing
What would you consider to be  the average amount of lines a day of editing based on a 65 space line in an 8 hour day.  If you can do an average of 1200 straight typing what would be the expectation for a day of editing?  What do you think is a fair rate of pay for that editing? Do you know of companies that offer a tiered incentive rate for editing rates to do most of them offer a flat rate for lph?   Do you find you make more money,  less money or about the same than straight typing?  Thanks to anyone who is willing to share this information.  Feel free to email if you would rather share by email.
VR editing versus MT editing pay

    Greetings,

How does VR editing prod. pay compare to hourly pay ($15) regular QA and constantly being threatened to start being payed production.  Are there any special tricks to know to make good money on a VR program?  Any companies that have VR and are better than other ones would be appreciated as well.  Any and all assistance much appreciated-have to make a change shortly, so looking for a great company that offers ins. benefits.  Thanks for your time.

You're working to make money, not to spend money.
These people should be ashamed of themselves taking advantage of people this way!
I also blew some money signing up with Quixtar... The only way to make any money is to bug everyone

you know into signing up.  I felt like a snake oil huckster.  I hated it.  I was flushing money down the toilet from the moment I handed over my money.

RUN, do not walk away!  I do an entirely different side business now that I really love (in addition to my MTing, which I also love!)  Find something you're good at and that you truly love doing.  Then make a business out of it.  That's the best way to have a side business.  Selling discount toilet paper through Amway/Quixtar?  Not so much.

The CMT exam is overrated. Don't waste your time & money. Use that money on
paid anymore just because you have it.  There are a few CMT cheerleaders that post to people like you but they are pretty well sucked up into that association.
Yeah, money, that's it. I paid $20.00 for my dog. Money is NOT THE ISSUE
walk him daily, play ball daily, he sleeps in my office daily while I work. Yeah, I got a lot of money, NOT HARDLY. And, my dog is HORRIBLY HORRIBLY ABUSED because he wears a collar around his neck. It's people like you that make me sick. I am done defending my use of the shock collar. I am going to continue with it and my dog will continue to be pampered , educated, fed, kept warm, and love me for everything that I do for him even when I remind him that his barking needs to stop. So, with that said, I will not respond to any more of your CRAP in reference to the shock collar.
Money is money and most people will do whatever it takes when in need. sm
if you do bring it to the attn of the office manager, why not offer her a raise to compensate. it is obvious she just needs or wants more money than your office is paying her. I agree, it is a free country and although it seems odd, unless you had it outlined in contract, she can work for whomever or whereever she pleases on the side. at least she is typing and not at a strip joint, lol. I see no conflict of interest, she has experience obviously in whichever field you are in and what is wrong with doing extra in that field. i agree with MYOB "nicely" and concentrate on your reports than looking at older reports and seeing who they are typed by.
No need to wonder..It always means less money for the MT and more money for MQ.

Pack years = packs smoked per day x years of smoking - sm
    25 pack-years = 25 years of 1 pack a day, or 12-1/2 years of 2 packs a day.

I don't think pack-years applies to someone who smokes only cigars. But I don't know for sure.
