meeting people on myspace

Oh boy that's such a tough question!  Have they talked on the phone and corresponded for a while?  I'd never meet anybody that I hadn't at least talked to on the phone for a good amount of time and gotten to know alot about them personally first.  It's hard to say though for sure.  A chaperone is a good idea but she may not be cool with that.  I guess just keep really good dibs on here while she's gone if you can.  She is 19 and I hate to say but she is an adult and if people get on her butt about it she may go just to spite everybody.  What a tough call!

I get upset when people say people who are on the internet are all pedophiles and crooks.  That's just simply not true.  I'm on the net and I know for sure I'm a normal human being!  I met my best friend online about 4 years ago.  We talked online and on the phone and corresponded back and forth for an entire year before we even thought of meeting.  Now she's my best friend and even buying a house here and I see her ALL THE TIME so sometimes it can be a great thing.  Or maybe I just got extremely lucky!

AAMT meeting (SM)
Approximately how many attended this year. I wanted to go to Hawaii but couldn't afford it, but we sure had a ball last year in Atlanta. I live on the east coast, so will try to make next year's meeting in Boston.
The meeting today
First, please accept my thanks for listening and advising. The office manager is very nice, but I ended up taking all three flashdrives and making lists of the patients dictated. I made her a list from the schedules of who is not dictated. And this should be the end of all the hullamaboo in not knowing what is up. Some of the files on the flashdrive are blank, and that may be who is missing. Thank you so much.
meeting from online
Not exactly the same thing, but I met my husband online.. His little smiley face was lite up and I liked what he had said in his profile so we began chatting. Actually asked me to meet for a drink that evening.. I did,, in a casino where I lived. Obviously well populated area,, all i had to do was yell SECURITY, if there was a problem, LOL..My advise if you meet anyone from online you never, ever, ever bring them to your home.. You meet them in a public place with a lot of other people around. Agree with poster, never let on you live alone, or where you live until/if you ever feel comfory with that. We met that night and have been inseparable since..
Did anything become of that meeting? How did they respond to you?nm

myspace
Did any of you see Dateline (I think it was Sunday)?  It was about myspace.  I thought it was scary.  I have several (adult) friends who are on myspace and they post way too much information.  They should be smarter than the teens are but they seem to have the thought that it is only their friends who see there pictures, etc.  And a lot of the content is very inappropriate for teens--IMHO for anyone.  My friends who are on it are completely addicted.  I compare it to someone who smokes.  They get on myspace each day about as often as someone who smokes in a given day.  And what a competition it is to see how many "friends" you can have whether you have a clue who your friends are or not.

myspace
I'm not trying to start a debate about whether it is good or bad.  Just trying to satisfy my curiosity.  There are a lot of teens on it, of course, but a lot of friends my age (35) are getting into it too.  How many here are on it and what is your age?
myspace
I'm not, but I have two friends in their early 30s who are. My 16-year-old daughter has one.

I think the media makes too much of it all. There are always going to be people who don't do the "smart" thing. You can't be paranoid about everything and cut out all the possible "bad" things from your life.

My daughter's is set to friends only. My adult friends have open profiles. If I started one I would probably make it friends only, but I'm not sure.

myspace
Why yes I do! But I use xanga more. I don't know why though, I guess because I had it first.
Do U MySpace?
I'm addicted!
Does anyone use MySpace.com?
I'm just starting out but it seems somewhat involved...is it worth the effort? And why do some people have 8,000 "friends" ? Altho I must say my sister has a very elaborate "space" with music and videos - but I just don't know if its worth it. Anyone meet Mr. Right?
MySpace.com
From what I understand, it started out as a musicians' showcase website for up-and-coming bands. My son happens to be in one of our local "grind core" bands. LOL Anyway, it seems to be mostly teenagers that use the site. If you're looking for Mr. Right, why don't you try one such as match.com or eharmony. I think you'll find more adults, and I can't say for sure, but I think Match is free. My cousin met her fiance there. Beware of internet liars, however. We can all seem dreamy when we know we have that anonymity.
AAMT Boston meeting

Hi everyone.  Going to Boston meeting.  Of course, many of you may know AAMT going through lots of changes and unfortunately is losing membership.  Have been asked to bring list of problems/complaints regarding association and things MTs would like to see change in order to bring about a better organization to truly support the MTs.

If you are interested, please please send me any thoughts you may have, and any solutions you may have.  It may not make a difference in the end, but all I can say is we tried.

Thank you to all interested.

Hi, Lisa. Just wondering how the meeting
Hope everything went well!
If the meeting consists of her staying

and listening to dictation, yes, it should be paid and she as an IC should set the amount she should be paid.

I pick-up and deliver, and that's in my line charge.  I also do that at my convenience, not theirs.  A real office is fine with that and understands the meaning of IC.  Lisa is a vendor like any other contractor.

If I had to sit and listen and sort patient lists, etc. and spend more than 5-10 minutes tops at an office, then I would charge for that time spent at that office sorting through their mess.

Let's face it.  The office is a mess and Lisa is their scape goat.  Since now they know she's bending over backwards, they will take advantage.

Again, Lisa should not spend her time sorting out their mess.  Furthermore, if they can't figure out what to give her and "don't have time", then Lisa's response should be that she doesn't have the time either unless she charges them for that time.

It just sounds like a real mess of a deal.  I can't wait to hear if they actually pay her at all!

Okay, I'll shut up now!  Just the fact that she's posting again is hysterical.  I guess I'll keep my mouth shut after saying from the last thread regarding this "I told ya'' so."

You all thought "oh just this one time."  Why do you think the other girl quit?  Hello?  Can you say doormat?

I have 3 teens on myspace.
Really, you need to slowly step out on the porch, down the driveway, and into the world.

Don't you realize that media will sensationalize anything to the furthest extent possible in order to raise your blood pressure?

I watch the myspace of my kids, my kids' friends, and of any anxillary friends (it's not at all hard to do if you can use a computer keyboard). Ninety-five percent are fine. A few are revealing. Heck, my 16-year old met the greatest fellow on the planet through myspace; he has become a second son.

I have a myspace myself, centered around my work and hobbies.

Don't condemn reality before you experience your first breath.
I have a myspace account
I love it! It allows me to easily keep in touch with friends & family and I've found a lot of old classmates on there as well. I really enjoy the site. I think people are misinformed by the media & are quick to jump to false conclusions about myspace.
Betcha they would sure fire someone for not meeting production! nm

I justed attended a meeting and this was addressed
There are now computers that will be performing surgery. The medical field is changing in ways that are not good, according to the speaker, in that the younger physicians coming into the field are not comparable to physicians of yesterday, generally speaking. He thought it was a good direction, this computerized physician. He also did state that insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies have much to say about what goes on in the medical field (they have power/money).
Call the doctor and request a meeting of all three..
The doctor, wife and you and let him know this needs to happen before they leave as you are in a crunch.  It sounds like he respects you.  If you can get that arranged come right out and explain that the work is already done and needs paid for since you were given no advance warning.  Look her square in the eye and ask questions.  Ask for partial payment....keep the line open.  If it becomes obvious that she wants you gone then bring that up in his presence for verification and so he knows it was not you who jumped ship.   Just my 2 cents.........
Saw post today about meeting typing
These can be horrific. The problem is not the typing--if you could straight type you'd be able to calculate it closely. These recordings require you to set up some way to identify the speakers in maybe a QA format. The challenge is to pick out voices, which normally groups who want this stuff transcribed want that done. You may have to code the speakers if you weren't given their names. And, it's maybe not that tough if it's one person moderating and calling responders by name--you can maybe get a good flow that way, but the roughest is when they "open the panel" for questions or cross-talk. I have done these and believe me it's nothing like MT. If I ever do these again I'm going with my hourly rate--I've found most larger companies don't really care what you quote, they need to get it done and this is very hard work. And, I never had an easy time getting other transcriptionists to help out. Tough, tough. But, some people make a good living typing focus groups, meetings, etc. Just have to find the format and not do it for charity. My thoughts. Best of luck to you. By the way, I've always tried to fool myself into thinking I can type 1 hour of recording in less than 3 hours--hardly ever.
My 3 daughters have myspace sites
They are ages 18, 25 and 26. My older daughters stay in touch with old friends. My youngest has met lots of Marine girlfriends like her and they support each other. There is a lot of gross stuff, but some of it is kids being kids (do we all forget what we were like at that age). However, I do think parents should check their minor children's spaces. There is a lot of admission of underage drinking and drug use going on. I think these kids are nute posting that kind of stuff. I have a site and password too, that I only use to monitor things. My kids don't know that I have that. I just like to look at the pictures.

And yes, I agree, it is not any different than adults posting to sites like this or another adult type informational site.
My husband and I both 30 and have MySpace sites... sm
My husband keeps up with a lot of his old shipmates that way (some of them are under the age of 25) now that he is at another duty station and some of our old classmates from high school.  And, if you didn't notice, classmates.com charges for you to see more information on an old classmate, so if you can do it this way for free, then do it!    Not all people on MySpace are on it to do evil, look trashy or to have a popularity contest...some of us are just networking to catch up with old friends!
About myspace posts below and opinions.
My niece has met a guy on myspace.  We're in New York, he's in Wisconsin.  She is 19.  She is going to fly out to meet him this summer.  Am I CRAZY, I THINK SHE'S NUTS!  Am I too old fashioned to believe if he were any kind of guy that he would come where she lives to meet her before her just flying out there sight unseen?  I really believe she is heading into trouble that we can do nothing about.  She is an adult (LOL) but this is still scary to me.  What do you think?
www.myspace.com.....it is kind of like a place
where you can journal, share pictures, comment your friends, etc. It's basically like your own little space.
Career Step is on myspace now
Just telling you guys if you were grads or whatever, in case you are interested. A CS student friend of mine told me about it today. I went through CS and I loved it. Anyway, like I said, in case you are a myspacer.

Any MTs going to Honolulu next month for the AAMT annual meeting?

Are there any MTs who can afford to go?  Are there any hospitals or MT companies who will pay for their MTs to attend the meeting in Honolulu?

Do you suppose next year's meeting might be in Bangalore or Bombay?

Did anyone attend the AAMT annual meeting in Honolulu? sm
If so, how was it?  Was it well attended?  Were the speakers good?
No offense, but your attending the meeting in Boston won't make
heads so far up overseas companies butts, there is no way they are going to change.  AAMT might as well go the way of the Do-Do where the US is concerned.  I heard that they were changing their name anyway.  Why should any US MTs give a rats butt what AAMT thinks or does.  The only membership they will have in the future will be offshore.  I think it's high time for a new organization, one that doesn't suck up to offshore companies the way AAMT and MTIA does.  Of course, my view will be taken as protectionism, which is absurd when my whole view is that jobs are being taken away from American workers and American's privacy is in jeapordy when dictated files get funneled overseas.
I was "let go" for not meeting production. Tough to do when there is NO WORK!!! EVER!!!!

myspace users or computer gurus

Okay, I'm not sure what I did, but here's the deal...When I log into myspace on my computer, I can't see any pictures.  All of the other sites are fine, just not this one.  However, if I log into myspace from a different computer, everything is fine.  Any ideas?

Just turned 40 last week, Not on myspace and won't allow my teens either. sm
I have a very fulfilling life with my husband, family and friends - don't see the need for myspace for folks my age.

As for the teens - there is just too much temptation on their for them to get in trouble. They are forbidden and I check the web as well as their computers, cookies, etc. every week to be sure they are in compliance. To much danger there for my son and daughter.

My daughter met her boyfriend on Myspace. He's an wonderful guy.
Be careful, yes, but don't automatically assume that everyone on a specific site is out to do harm. It just isn't so.
Guess I have to show my ignorance -- what is myspace? TIA nm

what is an IEP? my child has dyslexia and i have a meeting tomorrow morning at the school. sm
we moved to a new school at middle semester last year. prior school had awesome dyslexia program. now the program is all a "tape" that they watch. no extra time to finish assignments, nothing. she went from A's and B's to failing since our move. how can i force this school to obtain a true dyslexia teacher to work with my child and surely other children that need help?
if you live among trashy people, low income people, people w/o goals or direction,
content to just get by, you by default become a part of a group. "people" have decided to group trailer people as trash. that is because there are enough people in that group to earn the title and even if you aren't trash, you are categorized by others. did i think i was trash in lower class neighborhood surrounded by people who drank and fought all weekend? no but i knew i wasn't staying and did not try to pretend that all the fools in the neighborhood were just nice folks who ended up where they were because high horse snobs deemed their neighborhood low class. people for the most part live exactly where they belong because they don't want to educate themselves, they don't mind "trash" around them and they don't want to be bothered trying just a bit hard to extract themselves from that world. they justify everything to themselves i guess saying everyone who doesn't like their lifestyle is a snob and the comedians (Jeff Foxworthy/Chris Rock, etc) who make fun of them are just ill-informed.

As for me, I fought hard to get out and don't even want to look back. It amazes me people stay for generations.
so many people was wishy-washy nowadays...love to see people make
a stand for what they believe in...

it is kind of wierd those statements have to be made in the first place but guess we are an ever-transitioning country and are still young. so many different beliefs yet not much tolerance.

I found your post respectful, and right on as to how you feel. it does not seem that difficult to sift through to read and respond to messages someone might not care for...
Just remember that it is not the people on this board who short changed their people and ONLY after
caught did they (after they were suied) make an effort to look good by sending out these checks. Now, think about this--had they done this many years ago when they short changed everyone, that would have been honest. Does it not bother you that only after they know they are under the gun that they are doing this to try and make themselves look good?

I used to work for MQ and I used to like what I did. I never can say I really liked the people that I worked with, but I really think they had some of the best accounts that I have ever come across in the MT industry. I loved working the major teaching hospitals that I did, but that certainly does not mean that I enjoyed being cheated out of pay.

So chill already. People have been cheated, were lied to, and only AFTER they got caught have they tried to return some of the money they robbed us of (as well as cheated their clients).

We all have reasons not to be happy with this company and you go off on us because we are complaining of things like small refund checks of a penny or a few cents or a few hundred dollars and NO WAY to even check to find out if this is correct?

I am sorry you are unhappy all of us thinking that there is still a dead rat in the cellar, but there is still a dead rat in the cellar and nothing will bring the dead rat back.

I would hold no love for a company that I know willingly cheated the very people who helped THEM make money out of their hard-earned money.

Go take a deep breath and think about that.
My people skills are just fine. I just want to hire people who want to work.
I've not been ugly, I've asked questions, legitimate ones.  Please tell me what is wrong with that.  This site is not just for MTs, it is for QA Editors, Supervisors, Service Owners, there's even sections for Billers, Coders, and Nurses.
rude people? I would take good pay over polite people any day
Besides that they have never been rude to me and I have been here for almost 2 years. What do you consider a bad account?

I know my account is a little tough, but I am used to it. I am tough!
Rude people? I hardly think so. They are some of the nicest people I have ever worked with. sm
Not just management, but QA as well. No one is rude. They are a very understanding staff. There is one account that is hard but all it takes is getting used to it. Once you are used to it, it is no harder than any other ESL account that you would do anyplace else. I have heard all these things about TH from the archives and I have yet to come across rudeness or any kind of thing that I have read about in the archives. I would definitely pursue them if I were you. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
2 people to do that amount of work, is she nuts? More like 20+ people - nm
x
Certain people getting raises, certain people not. Guess who is?
Say what you will about unions, the good and the bad. But, one thing they did ensure is a raise, good benefits and that you would have a job in the morning.

Yeah right, OF COURSE! How could there be other people who don't like QA people?
Could only be one.   Hahaha.  Dream on.
I agree, some people will never get it but, then again, what does it say about them as people? Not

.

I don't like people
nm
Just so happens there ARE some people who
CAN really produce and NOT cherrypick. GEESH.

Problems come from working with stinky attitudes like yours.
The people....
Did you ever think that what you take as politeness might just be their poor language skills?

Why don't you go over to India and live for awhile - they have half of our MT jobs so you should be able to find work (Healthscribe, Medware). Then, tell us how polite they are.

People are people - just because they live in another culture doesn't make them any better than us or any worse than us. It is the job, working with the public, that wears people down eventually. It is particularly easy to be rude over the phone.
There are people who don't know better, there are people

who need to be at home for whatever reason, a chronic illness, kids, caregiver to sick parents, etc.  Any job is better than no job if you need to eat.

If there were enough decent paying jobs with honest companies no one would work for the low paying, dishonest companies.  So far I have turned down jobs with MQ because of their actions, quit a job with SS because it is a lowsy company, I have turned down 2 positions with companies that offshore.  Fortunately I got on with a company that paid a decent wage and one that doesn't offshore, though it isn't the great company that it used to be either, but it is a living.

try something most people have a
problem with and your worth increases .. neurology and ophthalmology for instance.  Most people are afraid of the eye .. wonderful once it becomes second nature.  Oncology is another sought after skill, but takes a lot of work.  Also you might contact M-Tec to take their class in neuro or OAK Horizons .. they are both very good.
That people such as yourself
would quit airing your dirty laundry and asking for advise - and then get all pissy when people give their opinion. After all, that is what you were after right? This is MT Stars, this is NOT a military advice column or posting board. When you open yourself up on a public forum, then be prepared for what follows.

Personally, I think anyone who signs up to defend the country and then turns his back on his duty is HEARTLESS.

The military makes your obligations and consequences VERY clear.
Sure some people do need help..(sm)

The below is an e-mail that I got from a lady who lives in Houston.  These are her observations only, but it sure does make you think about all of the self-righteous out there who really don't understand another person's hesitation in taking many of the people in to our communities.  Some of them come from a whole different kind of mentality.

Well...

I feel sorry for these people - they have lost everything - they have nothing. I blame their own government at least a bit for not evacuating the ones that were too poor or had no way to evacuate.

That being said, it isn't going as well here as the media makes it out to be. Anthony has been down the to the Astrodome as required by the Fire Department, and I went down on Saturday with a friend of mine.

The Astrodome holds around 50,000 people - and there aren't that many evacuees down there. There are bathroom facilities, but these people are squatting on the streets, parking lots, and lawns of places down around the astrodome and leaving behind urine and fecal matter. They are throwing trash wherever they are when they finish with it, and quite a few act like we "owe" them something. I can't tell you how many people were bitching about the MRE's that they were being served.

As high as gas prices are, I will go out of my way not to have to drive by the Astrodome (my RE's office is about 1 mile from the dome). When you stop at a stop light they come up to your car and beg - and knock on the windows. There have even been reports of some jumping in the backs of pickups and even scratching cars and trucks with knives, if you don't give them money.

I know that there are some good people out there, but there are a lot of bad ones too. There are some that were appreciative of the baby formula (breastfeeders - please don't jump on me here) and diapers and coloring books that we were handing out - and some that were bitching about the brand of diapers, the fact that we were only authorized to give out one can of formula per child and that we didn't have a certain kind of bottles. I even had people that refused to take gift cards from Grocery Stores - wanting money instead.

Last night, one of the evacuees was able to score some alcohol somewhere, got drunk and carjacked a car and ran into several parked cars - the police were able to pull him over after a 15 minute chase.

And I can't get over the smell of raw sewage in the area of town that most of the evacuees are housed. The plumbing in the toilets are working just fine - but they aren't using it. They are trashing the place.

I can't imagine what it must be like for them, having nothing but the clothes on their backs - but I think I would be more appreciative of whatever someone could do for me, instead of griping about what kind of bottles they were giving me to feed my kids with, and that the MRE's were cold.

I really have mixed emotions about the whole thing. I feel sorry for the people who couldn't leave, and got stuck in the chaos. I don't have as much sympathy for the ones who could have left, but didn't want to.

I am sure I sound like a cold, callous, b****, but I was absolutely amazed at the attitude of most of the evacuees that I was in contact with on Saturday.
