What exactly is a specialty?

I thought when an MTSO asked your specialty, they were asking for the type of  work you transcribed/edited, such as radiology, ops, ER, GI, cardio, pulmonary, etc.  But, I was recently filling out an application that referred to specialties as soap notes, discharges, clinic notes, procedures notes, admissions and/or discharges.

All of those can be sort of combined.  A GI patient may have a speical procedure done, then see his or her primary care doc in a clinic for the results.  So, what exactly is the specialty?

Thanks to anyone who will be so kind as to really clear this up for me.

Favorite Specialty

Greetings!

This is my first post on the boards although I have been reading them line by line for days!  I just wanted to take a few minutes to say hello and see if I could ask a few questions.

1. what is your favorite specialty to transcribe and why?

2. for a new MT what resources would you consider the most valuable? Why?

3. can you tell me about your history with being an MT?  Rough spots and moments that made it all worthwhile?

I want to thank you in advance for any help you are able to give.  Also to say thank you to all the wonderful experienced MT's who have give such positive reinforcements to people on these boards.  Its nice to see so few people jaded by years in a career choice, it helps me to feel good about my decision!

Blessings,

Denita

is it acute care or one specialty sm
progress notes? Progress notes are progress notes.
Maybe try a specialty doctor's office first. Most times
they will hire you, in-house, and go from there.

It is very difficult to find an at-home MT job just starting out; however, there are some companies who will hire you. I personally do not know of any, but if you do a search, maybe you will come across one.

When I started 25 years ago, it was in a private physician's office and I just moved on up from there.

Good luck!
A specialty usually refers to the type of dictation
For example, cardiology, neurology, GI, hem/onc.....  I have seen where some MTs just transcribe ER or just OPs, so I guess that application you filled out is strictly acute care and are looking for actually your preference amongst those particular choices.
Please make sure to ask word questions on the Word Help board. There are
people who specifically answer questions there.
If you currently type in word, then do a word count
then I really can be of no help.  Usually when trying to get an idea of a line count with spaces and without spaces, you can use this method.  Some people have actual line counting software.  I, however, do not, so I am not much help in that regard.  Hope this helps at least a little.
Microsoft Word/Microsoft Word 2003 are the same
MS Word 2007 is an upgrade.  Are you sure that you don't have it installed on your PC?  I don't know if that helps...good luck, and please don't pull your hair out, it comes out with age (lol)
Word

When I have to copy and paste admission notes, for example, and then have to reformat the whole page, all the BOLD  HEADINGS become BOLD HEADINGS.  Then I have to go back and re-bold them all.  Is there a fast way to jump between headings, besides just scrolling?

Just go to the Word help
section of this website.  It's wonderful!!  I've been in the business five years and still use it quite, quite often.
word help
How do I use word help? Do I have to pay any money? Do I have to  be signed up with anything? How long does it take for me to get an answer. Thanks everyone.
Need help with a word.
the word is in regard to a type of incison for laparoscopic hernia surgery.  No mesh was necessary.   Sounds like lachsimen incision was made and there was no tension.
One word...E-bay.
You can find most of the books you would need on E-bay. If not, Amazon.com has a used book section that will save you some money. Also, you can buy directly from Stedman's and sometimes find discounts of their word books.
Pay by the word
I work for a company that pays me .02 cents per word. It is for a research company and it brings me in a nice sized paycheck. It's definitely a fair price I feel. Hope this helps.
I am sure she will take your word for that.

word help

I need some help with this transcription.  It reads  Patient was on a cruise recently and she traveled in an airplane about 10 days ago and ear pressure persists and the patient denies any hearing loss.  No ________, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting.

Can anyone help???

Word help

Hi,

Has anyone heard of Officebestdeals.com?  They are advertising Microsoft word 2003 for 11.95. So cheap!!  Kind of hesitant.  Any information on that would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Barb

Look up the word slander, Lin. SM
One would think someone so focused on quality would know the proper term, or at least know how to consult a dictionary.
stuck on a word
Hello.  Is there a site that I can ask other MTs a question if I am stuck on a word or medication?  Thanks for all your help.
The operative word being SOME...but not very many
I did not come across one company in my extensive search for employment that began before I graduated from Community College that stated they would not let me test because I didn't go to one of the "top 3".  In fact, most companies have links to their testing on their websites.  Those that don't will send you an email with the proper links for testing purposes.  To keep stating that the "top 3" schools are the be all and end all to successfully obtaining employment in this field is just plain wrong.  I was hired before I even finished school.  It depends on the determination of the person.  Two different people can come out of the same MT program and one can be an excellent MT while the other can be absolutely horrible.  Being a graduate of the "top 3" has nothing to do with it.

Its probably your system, not Word
There is a time delay because your puter probably isn't keeping up with you.  Clean out your computer and run a disk defrag.  That should help.
The word - newbie. sm

Does that word sit wrong with other people?  I'm not new to the MT business but when I see that word it just makes me cringeIt is so commonly used in this industry and, to me, comes across as demeaning when we all are fighting so hard to gain some respect in this business.

Just my gripe!

Have a great day.

Yes, same with me, a word is/was considered - sm
5 characters, so 13 x 5 = 65; I would of course confirm this with the prospective employer though before agreeing to anything. If it 65 then that is the norm and acceptable; unless they are offering dirt for pay.

What word program
do most companies require you to have to work for them? I have wordperfect 12 right now and have been using it for school. I am planning on buying something else before I start working, but I'm not sure what would be best.
You will want Word 2003 most likely, but
while you are waiting, look into Chesapeake Transcriptions and Letni. Both advertised last year for MTs with Word Perfect/Corel experience. Just an idea.
MS Word 2007
If you get MS Word 2007, it gives you the option tocreate a document and save it so that it is compatible with MS Word 2000-2003.  I would get it so that you don't have to upgrade later.
Word 2003
I agree with Keri, 2000-2003 are widely used, 2007 not much, 2003 is the best.
Word 2007 I NEED HELP!

Here's what it looks like:

1. Cor pulmonale with salt and water total body fluid      overload, with cardiomegaly and edema.

I am trying to add a couple of spaces before the word "overload" so that the "o" will be directly beneath the "C" of "Cor pulmonale". But if I just click in front of the word and touch the space bar, it won't let me do it. Any ideas? I'm desperate to try anything. Thanks

vista and word
Bring the computer back if you can and have them install windows XP....I have found that 99.9% of companies are non-vista compatible. Also, try to get Word 2003...most companies want that are not once again not compatible with Word 2007.
Word 2003?

Hi,

where do you get 2003?  They are anywhere to be found in my area.

Thanks!

word 2007 ?

Hi,

I have word 2007.  My fonts are on 10 and should be 12 and when I put it on 12 it keeps flipping back on 10.

New Time Romans flips back on something else also, how do I get it stop flipping?

Thanks a bunch!

IF you buy word 2003 can

you give it to someone else to download after you download it yourself.  Is this legal?

Thanks

What word expander do you use?

I am a newbie and have only been employed for a little less than two weeks.  I do about 300-500 lines an hour depending on which platform I am on. That really isn't all that bad, considering the fact that I have to research a lot of words. That said, I want to explore ways to increase my productivity without hurting my acuracy.

Thanks.

Word Expanders
I don't know if my reply got through.  I use Instant Text.  Expensive, but if your memory is shot some days, you just type in a few letters and it gives you a list of not only words but phrases.  I can remember to type cce when I want to have it spelled out for me as no cyanosis, clubbing or edema.  It spells better than I do.  You really save Keystrokes when you learn it over time, you just can't make a glossary for it overnight.  It comes with like 20 anyway, but like the drug one doesnt always have what I need.  And I still need to find more ways to produce more.
Help with Microsoft word

I have to take a test and the company is not compatable with Word 2007 and I have to send the test back to them.  How do I change the word 2007 into a lower version?

Help with Microsoft word
They are saying that they have word 2003 and the platform required 2000 or 2003. So does that mean that 2007 does not work?
