when someone says something posted from a court document with all the references in place is a lie simply because it was reprinted on a conservative website cares nothing about the truth. I said it and I meant it. That is not calling that person a liar. Stop twisting things to your advantage. Not all the liberals on this board play that game. Only a few of you do. Won't debate an issue, just say it is from a right wing rag (even if it is the original court document) and will absolutely not look at both sides of an issue. And based on what I have read about liberalism and what liberals posted on this very board in response to my question...that is the antithesis of true liberal behavior. I know I will be bashed for this but am going to say it anyway.
And, before I go further, this is happening on both sides. I am an ind. and am still undecided which way I am going, this is just an observation that I started with last week and it is finishng up this. It has been going on for years, it is nothing new.
The candidates say children are off limits, and they should be, I am not disputing that at all. Yet, they have no problem "pimping" (I know not a very good choice of words, but somewhat apt) them out to meet their needs.
Last week, Obama's kids were up there and Biden's family too; though his children are older - does that make them fair game then, but either way the grandkids were on stage. Now, we see Pallin's kids up on stage and I am sure tonight McCain's kids will be front and center.
I don't think anybody should be attacking these kids, but why is we cannot ask any questions at all about the children or the candidate and their spouses about how they are going to balance work and family life, but they think it is okay to bring them up on stage and say, "See, what a happy and beautiful family we are."
The hypocrisy of the politicians is so thick, I need a scalpel to cut it. Again, this is on both sides and has been going on for election after election. Again, we should not be probing into these kids lives and attacking them, Chelsea Clinton unfortunately had it happen to her and now Bristol Palin is going through it.
It just begs the question of if you don't want your kids brought into the political rhetoric, why bring them out for all to see on a huge political stage, in front of millions of people.

Here is what I am thinking - and remember- I am canadian so my perspective is looking from the outside in.
I think this entire campaign is showing that perhaps the USA is really not "the greatest country in the world".
This campaign seems to be showing people for what they really are. I get CNN and I get Fox - I get the perspective from both sides as well as being accessable to everything on the net. I have never seen so much hate - not since the historical events of ww2- and the effects of this I see every day.
I thought the US was a country where if you work hard enough you will be rewarded.
It breaks my heart to see a candidate being judged by the colour of his skin - not for his education or his person - but the colour of his skin. It breaks my heart that racism is alive and kicking after so much recent history.
In my opinion - Barrack Obama and his lovely well spoken wife would be a breath of fresh air that America needs. The US needs to regain its reputation as the greatest country in the world - he is intelligent, has worked for everything he has earned - is young, fresh and vibrant - he would be a hero to those who need it most - you can come from nothing and work your way to something.
You don't have to be an old white man from an "old boys" club that has been hired to be a puppet for the big businesses of the west.
S0orry if I offended but I really need to say this- the entire campaign is on every news channel in the entire world - all eyes are on the US and it is not playing out very nice - it has become sad and pathetic.

fear mongering on here, but I truly am terrified of what has become and what is becoming of our great country. Other than storming D.C. with pitch forks and torches....I really don't know what to do. I can write letters as much as I want to any given politician and they are still going to do what their party wants them to or do whatever special interest group wants them to do. Our government is so corrupt, in my opinion, it isn't funny. I truly don't think that we have seen the worst yet, but I fear we will. I just keep hoping and praying that I'm wrong!

having a 135 IQ, and obviously thinks it's pretty special. The rest of us realize that it is no more worthy of praise than the eye color or height we happen to have inherited. Much better to take credit for something we have actually accomplished, rather than what's in our DNA.
Most of us were IQ tested somewhere back in our school years, and yet do not have the score printed on our business cards. How many actually feel it necessary to share that number at the drop of a hat? Me neither.
Bush Bashed by Republicans
At the same conference Karl Rove's comments were leaked, President Bush was bashed for two full days, according to participant Robert Novak. He was taken to task on his handling of stem cell research, population control, the Iraq war and, especially, Hurricane Katrina. The critics were no left-wing bloggers. They were rich, mainly Republican and presumably Bush voters in the last two presidential elections.
Though the conference sessions were off-the-record, Novak says the admonition says nothing about personal conversations outside the sessions. Nor do I feel inhibited in quoting myself. Even if I am violating the spirit of secrecy rules, revealing criticism of Bush by this elite group, and the paucity of defense for him, is valuable in reflecting the president's parlous political condition.
Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal's Washington Wire says a Bush adviser frets about increased 'cutting and running' by Republican candidates through the 2006 elections.

McCain's speech, while gracious, was given to a smallish "invite only" crowd, made of up largely white people, mostly white males. Obama had half a million people from all walks of life. That speaks volumes.

I wasn't being racist. If anything, I was being "classist" because I was referring to an entire class of people, including white people, as well, that has been hurt over the last eight years by corporate welfare. In case nobody has noticed, under the Bush administration, the middle class almost became extinct, so our society now mostly consists of rich and poor, regardless of race.
Please tell me SPECIFICALLY what was racist in my post, and then we can have a discussion. Of course, if a discussion really isn't within your realm of interest, then, please, by all means, just continue the juvenile name calling.

While the bill does not explicitly state it will cover families to $83,000, it opens a loophole that will allow New York to again ask for the $82,600 raise and under the new bill would probably get it, because the stipulation preventing it was being removed. So basically what Bush said is true...he should have worded it differently.

Is President Bush a liar who hates children? That's what many of his critics now are asking in the opinion pages of major newspapers across the country. Why else, they say, would he refuse to sign a bill providing health insurance to poor kids?
Specifically, the president has vetoed a bill expanding the State Children's Health Insurance Program designed to provide health coverage to lower-income children. One nationally syndicated columnist went so far as to call Bush's rationale in vetoing the bill a "pack of flat-out lies."
This kind of rhetoric is wrong and misleads readers about the facts of this important issue.
There is no debate over whether to reauthorize the SCHIP program so it can continue to provide insurance to needy children. That's a given. The debate is about whether children in middle-income families should be added.
The president is absolutely right in insisting that SCHIP focus on its core mission of needy children. When SCHIP was created in 1997, the target population was children whose parents earned too much for them to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford private insurance. The president wants the program to focus on children whose families earn less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level. In today's dollars, that's $41,300 a year.
About two-thirds of the nation's uninsured children already are eligible for either Medicaid or SCHIP, but aren't enrolled. Raising the income threshold won't solve this core problem. Congress should require states to focus on the 689,000 children whom the Urban Institute says are uninsured and would be eligible for SCHIP if eligibility were limited to the $41,300 income level.
The other big problem is that, across the country, states are using SCHIP dollars to insure adults.
Fourteen states cover adults through SCHIP, and at least six of them are spending more of their SCHIP dollars on adults than on children. For example, 78 percent of SCHIP enrollees in Minnesota are adults, 79 percent in New Mexico, and 72 percent in Michigan.
With these statistics in mind, the Bush administration issued a ruling in August requiring states to demonstrate that they had enrolled 95 percent of eligible needy children before expanding the program.
Yet the bill that Congress passed, and which the president vetoed, nullifies that ruling and effectively refuses to agree that needy kids should get first preference. Instead, the congressional measure would give $60 billion to the states over five years to enroll millions more "children" - although many of them will, in fact, be adults. Others will be from higher-income families.
New York, for instance, could submit a plan that would add children in families earning up to $83,000 a year to SCHIP. New Jersey could continue to cover kids whose parents make up to $72,000. All the other states would be allowed to cover kids in families with incomes up to $61,000.
Most children in these higher income families are already covered by private insurance. According to the Congressional Budget Office, 77 percent of children in families earning more than twice the poverty line have private health insurance now.
No one doubts that SCHIP is a vitally important program for needy children, and that our nation needs to do a better job of helping working families afford health insurance. But giving the states incentives to add middle-income kids to their SCHIP rolls will prompt families to replace private insurance with taxpayer-provided coverage.
This is completely backward. The goal of SCHIP should be to provide private coverage to uninsured children. If Congress would send the president a bill that does that, he says he would sign it in a minute.

2. The fact that the government has been tracking phone calls of hundreds of millions of Americans may be nothing more than a political *parking ticket* compared to what we might discover next week.

NSA Whistleblower: There's More, People Are Going To Be Shocked

From the subscription-only Congress Daily, Chris Strohm reports that NSA whistleblower Russell Tice will make some on bombshell revelations on Capitol Hill next week:
A former intelligence officer for the National Security Agency said Thursday he plans to tell Senate staffers next week that unlawful activity occurred at the agency under the supervision of Gen. Michael Hayden beyond what has been publicly reported, while hinting that it might have involved the illegal use of space-based satellites and systems to spy on U.S. citizens. Russell Tice, who worked on what are known as special access programs, has wanted to meet in a closed session with members of Congress and their staff since President Bush announced in December that he had secretly authorized the NSA to eavesdrop on U.S. citizens without a court order. In an interview late Thursday, Tice said the Senate Armed Services Committee finally asked him to meet next week in a secure facility on Capitol Hill.
Tice was fired from the NSA last May. He said he plans to tell the committee staffers the NSA conducted illegal and unconstitutional surveillance of U.S. citizens while he was there with the knowledge of Hayden, who has been nominated to become director of the CIA. Tice said one of his co-workers personally informed Hayden that illegal and unconstitutional activity was occurring. [...] I think the people I talk to next week are going to be shocked when I tell them what I have to tell them. It's pretty hard to believe, Tice said. I hope that theyıll clean up the abuses and have some oversight into these programs, which doesn't exist right now. [...]
Tice said his information is different from the Terrorist Surveillance Program that Bush acknowledged in December and from news accounts this week that the NSA has been secretly collecting phone call records of millions of Americans. It's an angle that you haven't heard about yet, he said.

Obama has already said he was going to put a windfall profits tax against the oil companies...money earned by one person...and divvy it out in $1000 whacks to people who did nothing to earn it. That is redistribution of wealth and that is Marxist. He already said he was going to do it. Government run health care is socialism.

Can someone explain what those things are outside the RNC. I understand wanting to protest and you hold a sign up showing your viewpoint and maybe you yell out something you believe in, but I can't understant what those things are that are wearing masks, being dragged away, having to be hosed down by the police.
What a nonsense and insane world they must live in. I'm all for freedom speech, but this is beyond my understanding.
Also - don't they have jobs? Do their employers allow them to take time off work to go do this and get arrested? I want that job. HA HA
A few things I would add...
This reply is picking up at the point after the main context regarding religion, which was addressed now under 2 separate posts.
The comments regarding basic human kindness. Is that a one-way street? What part of the Black Liberation Theology campaign which, if I recall corectly, you championed most vocally and most repetitively was not about race, politics or religion? If it's not two-way, it's a dead end. Perhaps leading by example would be a first step in the right direction.
With regard to welform, it is comforting to know that both candidates and both parties are on agreement and promote programs that tie welfare, jobs and training together. In terms of expecting welfare recipients to climb out of the "lower bracket," it is curious that you would hold them to an entirely different standard than you would the entire middle class, which again, if memory serves me, you claimed in a previous post in defense of tax cuts to the wealthy, fell into that same "lower bracket." To bankroll welfare that would raise the middle classes out of the "lower bracket" would most certainly appear socialist, and of course, we can't have any of that.
I am not aware of any candidate who seeks to "stifle" American ingenuity. Please enlighten us on that one. Are you referring to tax increases on individual incomes in excess of $250,000 or the proposals that would remove tax loopholes for large corporations? I am confused as to how that would "stifle" them. Our candidates seem to be in agreement on the need for government accountability and fiscal responsibility. That unity Americans supposedly shared in the aftermath of 9/11 is what some people would characterize as shellshock after an act of war on our own soil. Seems that the present administrations's response to that attack over these past 8 years is exactly why the nation is so divided now. That shared experience is not something that can be taken back. One thing is for sure. The politics of fear that worked so well for them is not really working that well anymore, so there is no "going back;" there is only going forward from here.
Not quite sure what the prayer statement is trying to say, especially in the context of discrimination (?) against Christians. God is on the currency, but Jesus is not. If you are referring to prayer in school or any other public gathering, I'm afraid that could get pretty messy. Nothing against prayer or praying, but this being a country where all are free to practice their religion, then public places would need to have a prayer room and rug to accommodate the Moslem practice of call to prayer, meditation rooms for the Eastern faiths and the like. In assemblies led by Christian prayer, it probably would need to be followed by a prayers or readings from The Torah, The Holy Kitab, The Epistle to the Son of the Wolf, The Avesta, The Confucian Analects, The Doctrin of the Mean, The Holy Mencius, The Great Learning, The Holy Quran, The Hadith, The Holy Akaranja Sutra, The Holy Kalpa Sutra, The Holy Kojiki, The Holy Nihongi, The Holy Tao Te Ching, The Holy Chuang Tzu, The 4 Vedas, The Upanishads, the 18 Puranas, the Bhagavid Gita

been trying to say. Thank you for standing up for Jesus. Thank you for not being afraid to say how you feel. I, too, am a born-again believer and I am terribly burdened by what I have read on this board. I am shocked that so many of my co-workers do not believe in prayer, or even in God. I guess this is something I have always just taken for granted. Once again, thank you for your courage.
One thing we can do, as believers, we can pray for wisdom in making our decisions who we will vote for in this election. Also, whoever is elected, we can lift them up daily for strength and wisdom and God's will in the decisions they make for our great country!

The housing that was in his area for community organizer....especially the ones owned by Rezko were so bad that people had no heat during the Chicago winters. The same Rezko who he had sketchy dealings with in order to buy his mansion for way less than what it is worth. Obama the same man who attended church for 20 years where the preacher did nothing but preach about how America sucks because it was run by whitey and blacks should take over. Not to forget his cousin in Kenya who Obama campaigned for and gave money to and when his cousin lost the election....his followers rioted and killed innocent people. Obama campaigned for him when he visited kenya. What has Obama run successfully? The housing in his district were not up to snuff. Until it can actually be substantiated, rather than just hearsay, I do not believe that Palin did not know that Africa is a continent. That is ridiculous. She is not a stupid woman, regardless of whether or not you like her. Remember--Obama said something about 57 states, but I don't believe that he doesn't know how many states there are, either.
