Chris Matthews on Hillary Clinton

I Never Called Hillary 'She Devil,' Chris Matthews Says

There’s no doubt that “Hardball” host Chris Matthews used the expression “she devil” when talking about Hillary Clinton — but he insists he never called her that.

On the Nov. 18 telecast of the NBC-syndicated “Chris Matthews Show,” the host discussed Republican attacks on Hillary, who was then the Democratic presidential front-runner.

“She devil?” he said, “Republicans are absolutely demonizing Hillary Clinton.”

While he spoke, an image of Hillary appeared on screen with the words “She Devil?” below it. Later, an image of Clinton with devil horns appeared on screen.

Paul Bedard observed in U.S. News & World Report’s “Washington Whispers” column that Matthews, who has been mulling a run for the Senate in 2010, was “concerned he ruined it with the women vote.”

But Matthews now tells Bedard: “I never called her a she devil . . . You can see it is where we introduce the topics to the show.”

He claims Media Matters for America took the expression out of context.

“This stuff has been cooked up,” he said.

Media Matters spokesman J. Jioni Palmer retorted that Matthews has a pattern of “sexist comments.”

Matthews’ mouth got him into trouble back in February 2007 when he used “the f-word” while referring to President Bush’s ranch during an appearance on the “Imus in the Morning” show.

This past January he stirred up protests when he said the reason Hillary was a senator and candidate for president “is that her husband messed around.”

Chris Matthews is a liberal. sm
Ronald Reagan was in the service.  So what if he wasn't in combat.  He enlisted during wartime. I commend him for that.  You might want to look at the ages of the people you are talking about, as well.  Some of them, MANY of them, were of service age in non wartime.  Bob Dole was horribly wounded in WW II. He's not on the list. You only put the Democrats who served and the Republicans who didn't.  Why did you do that?  You are right. It is of no significance.  By your reasoning, only those who have had an abortion could have an opinon about it.  Ridiculous.
Chris Matthews had a great way of
breaking it down, they could have bought and paid cash for Joe's house and had $23,500 left. Can you imagine? I wonder how many of Joe's houses the Dems could have bought with the money Obama raised over the amount he originally agreed to accept from public funding. That is, before he decided he needed to spend 7 times as much money as the pubs and put make him be the candidate to spend the most money in history on a presidential campaign? I wonder what all that money is being spent on. And, believe it or not, all of it just averaging $86 donations!
Chris Matthews...Randi Rhodes....and on and on and on...
you have them on your side too. Air America could not make it as a liberal talk radio station, so now they are the Atheist Network. Maybe that will work for them.

What I will never understand is how liberals want to expose all the hatefulness they see on the other side, yet cannot see ANY of the hatefulness on their own side. Well, let me qualify that. There is on liberal who posts here who has a grip on reality and when something it is wrong it is wrong, no matter which side it occurs on. That being said, the rest who seem to post here can see the splinter in the other side's eye but can't see the timber in their own. Frankly, for someone trying to make up their mind what liberalism really is and what it stands for...it does not present a really pretty picture.
Chris Matthews... gotta love him.
I actually know him. He's like that in real life, I promise you. I didn't see this particular interview, so I can't comment on it directly. But, when Chris thinks someone is trying to evade a question, he keeps at it. True, sometimes the poor interviewee is actually trying to answer the question but can't get a word in edgewise. We have the same problem when we're with him!

He's a commentator, not a journalist. There's a certain amount of entertainment factor to his show, and MSNBC knows it. Viewers either love him or hate him, agree with him or violently disagree with him. As long as he can pull in ratings, he'll be there. If he doesn't appeal, it's easy enough to just switch him off. There are plenty of times I just smile and shake my head, "Oh, Chris is at it again!" And just click him right off.
Hmmm.....Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann....
removed from anchor duties for election coverage and relegated to commentator only.  Talk about backlash.
That is a famous quote of Chris Matthews from MSNBC...
said when he heard Obama speak he got a thrill up his leg. No bias there. lol.
I watch Chris Matthews six days a week

(including his Sunday morning show), and I never heard him say that.  I heard him say that Africa is a continent with 50-some countries.

Please provide a link to Matthews saying Africa is a country.

FYI Hillary Clinton
She is from Chicago. She started her life as a Republican, like her father. Believe it or not, she was a volunteer in Barry Goldwater's campaign. Bet he is rolling in his grave.

It does not matter what they call themselves, they are different flavors of the same bad ice cream. Democrat or Republican, they are controlled by the men behind the curtains and the wealthy establishment whose agenda they are promoting. If they cannot get you to pick their (CFR) candidates through their media, they use Diebold to hack the vote electronically.
But he's backing Hillary Clinton
Can you explain that?
Yes, it was Hillary Clinton. She had said, after the primaries...
that she would accept if offered. Obama, understandably, did not want his admin confused or overshadowed by the Clintons. But the point is, he did diss her. Especially in the eyes of some of her ardent supporters. Which is why many of them will vote McCain or stay at home rather than vote for Obama. How many of them...who knows. But party unity is not the issue here...otherwise they would not call themselves PUMA (Party Unity My As*).
Hillary Clinton would agree with you. nm

I don't understand this article about Hillary Clinton

The second paragraph says her appointment will be blocked by someone. The very next paragraph says she'll get in.

HUH? What difference will one day make? What am I not understanding?

WASHINGTON -- A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says Hillary Rodham Clinton will not be confirmed as secretary of state Tuesday because of a single senator's objection.

Reid spokesman Jim Manley said Republican John Cornyn of Texas has indicated he will block a move to confirm Clinton by an unanimous floor vote later in the day.

But Manley also said there would be a roll call vote Wednesday. And he predicted that "she will receive overwhelming bipartisan support" at that time.

The Senate does plan to confirm several of President-elect Barack Obama's Cabinet by unanimous vote later Tuesday.

Neither Cornyn nor his office was immediately available for comment.

Hillary Clinton Calls for Privacy Bill...sm
Now I agree with Senator Clinton on this and I have said all along wire tapping should have checks and balances, goverment 101.

Also, living in an information society there has to be something in place to protect citizens privacy. This past week I read a blog with pictures of unknowing obese or tacky dressed people posted in the blog with comments about them. These people were enjoying a private day at the pool and this blogger was snapping their pictures. Not only was this downright evil and disrespectful but it should be illegal.
---------------

(AP) Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, drawing on her experiences as a young Watergate lawyer who decades later was investigated as first lady, urged creation of a privacy bill of rights Friday to protect people's personal data.

Modern life makes many things easier and many things easier to know, and yet privacy is somehow caught in the crosshairs of these changes, Clinton said in a speech to a left-leaning legal group.

Clinton's speech on protecting consumers from identity theft and citizens from government snooping was the latest in a series of talks billed as major addresses by aides. Previous speeches were on energy and the economy.

A potential presidential candidate in 2008 whose eight years as first lady were marked by numerous investigations, Clinton noted her work on a House committee investigating the Nixon administration's illegal snooping and other abuses.

And she ruefully called herself an expert in the loss of privacy.

Having lost so much of my own privacy in recent years I have a deep appreciation of its value and a firm commitment to protecting it for all the rest of you, she said, prompting laughter from the audience of the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy.

Clinton wants to create a privacy czar within the White House to guard against recent problems like the theft of personal data from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

She also wants legislation to let consumers know what information companies are keeping about them and how it is used, and create a tiered system of penalties for companies who are not careful with consumer data.

Clinton also waded into the debate over anti-terror eavesdropping. For months Democrats have hammered at the Bush administration over the National Security Agency's program of domestic wiretapping without warrants from judges. The administration insists it is both legal and necessary.

Clinton said any president should have the latest technology to track terrorists, but within laws that provide for oversight by judges.

The administration's refrain has been, Trust us,' said Clinton. That's unacceptable. Their track record doesn't warrant our trust. ... Unchecked mass surveillance without judicial review may sometimes be legal but it is dangerous. Every president should save those powers for limited critical situations.

Actually, Hillary Clinton's healthcare plan was closer...sm
to socialized medicine than Obama's. Obama will keep private insurance companies and subsidize your premium if you earn below a certain amount. Also, there will be provisions where you can take your insurance with you if you change jobs, encourage preventative care, etc. For more detail check out this link.

Bill Clinton believed it, so did Hillary and so did John Kerry.
So did a great many in the congress else they would not have said so! How is it possible that you have such selective memory?  I wish I could do that.
I am not a John SYDNEY McCain supporter either. Nor do I support Hillary DIANE Rodham Clinton.
I merely put out what I have read. My opinion is just that. My opinion. Whether you believe it or not is not the point. I put in the link so that those who think differently than I do could look for themselves. It is not that difficult to understand. So does using his full name mean something bad? I don't think so. I use my full name when necessary. If it makes you feel better, then I will repost everything saying Barack Obama. Basically what the article says is that if the Global Poverty bill is passed then you will be paying $8,500 in taxes to a government entity who serves no useful function other than to line it's pockets with the money of the American taxpayers. That is US....you and me.

Personally, I don't want the government to get anymore of my money than they already do regardless of the need. I work too hard for what salary I make to give it away because it is the "feel good" thing to do.

This is my opinion and you are entitled to your opinion also.

PS: I do know what his names mean but thank you for sharing that anyway.

I dont watch MSNBC on TV as I dont subscribe to cable..I refuse to pay for TV and where I live in the desert we dont get many channels, however, I get most of my information of MSNBC on the net and from friends. I know, I know, even my mother from NY tells me, get cable but I wont (smile)..Anyway, the stuff I do get shows that Chris Matthews is a good reporter.  In fact, he stated he voted for Shrub (Bush) and now he seems to lean away from Shrub.  I like Matthews, I like Olbermann (a good friend grew up with him in upstate NY in Hastings on the Hudson), heck most of MSNBC I like.  As far as July 4th, I will be working..no big holiday for me this year..guess I will eat a veggie burger or veggie hot dog (I am vegetarian) and drink a brewski but that is it.
Matthews
I guess you like that tingling running up his leg?  That's so in the tank it's just creepy (pardon that pun)!
Matthews sm

has a b_ _ _ _r fpr O.

Remember that "thrill up his leg," or whatever?  What the heck kind of MAN would say that and be straight?  None in my world, and I know gay men!

And C. Matthews is one sorry piece of
He is definitely being paid by the DNC and paid well. He is trash.
And by that, Matthews means HIS
version of the truth!
Right, Olbermann and "tingle up my leg" Matthews.
nm
Chris was excellent

pinned him to the wall like a bug (no offense to bugs out there).  Intersting also that he mentioned McCain's former policy chief (or something) Tori Clark wrote a book with the name.  I love to see the hyocrites squirm. it sends a thrill up my leg.

Chris is on the way to a meltdown
Not only was he rude but he's getting worse and worse as the democrats ratings keep dropping. Talk about a pit bull (without lipstick). He's attacking his guests not giving them a chance to answer the questions. That's not "pinning someone to the wall like a bug". That's just rude. He should ask the guest a question, let him answer, and then respond to his answer. To badger and not let your guest answer a question you ask while giving free reighn (sp?) to the democratic guest is just pure horse hockey. After today I no longer watch his show. I want some truth and clear cut answers and I believe every guest should be allowed to answer a question in full without the host bullying him (which by the way I do not believe Obama called Sarah a pig). Still is no excuse for Mathews to act like that. He's supposed to be a host and treat both sides fairly. That he does not do. He did this to other guests and luckily they said to him let me answer your question. MSNBCs ratings are going down the tube and they just lost one more viewer.
I liked Chris Rock's

take - reelection.  He said Obama would surely win  because what Kenyan ever lost a race?

Chris Dodd

"People are angry about bailouts, but would be more upset if the big 3 go under."

I hope they put his info on the news. I just can't type fast enough to cover it and don't want to put words in his mouth. The hearing was 6 hours long! Whew!

What I got from most of it was that GM and Ford have unsecured debt while Chrysler has secured debt and that the Chrysler CEO would step down if that would help his company.  Wagoner (GM) and Gettlefinger are working together and GM keeps defending the UAW.

"Bankruptcy is the wrong approach," Dodd says. "There is concensus that inaction is not an option and the concensus is that we are not going to write a check without stipulations. My sense is that I have a working situation here and I'm going to get it done.... I need the federal reserve and the treasury to step up."

On the other bailouts, "I am through giving them money. I still have 9.000 people a day losing their homes and they (I think he's talking about Paulson) still haven't done anything about it."

Chris Mathews

to run for office?  Old rumor, but if true I am delighted.  We are once again attracting decent, intelligent individuals with true patriotism for government service.  Obama's positive impact on our nation just keeps going and going . . .

why is Chris Mathews

labeled combative.  He has an opinion show.  When he asks a question and the guest regurgitates a talking point or avoids answering the question, Mathews holds his/her feet to the fire.  Remember what the press is for?  Finding the truth?

Chris Wallace works for

Fox News which is a republican propaganda outlet.  An actual journalist was chosen. The Fox get it turn next week which only zealots will watch.

Chris Mathews says debate

can use empty chair if McCain does not show.

I liked Chris Rock's take on the Clintons...sm

Chris Dodd is going to be on CNBC
in a couple minutes with a press conference. Don't know what it's all about. Just caught the end of the announcement.
Chris Mathews from MSNBC said
it was a country. Funny they didn't jump down him for that. Then come to find out Gov. Palin never said it.

I would not doubt for a minute that the person putting out the rumors and cut downs of Gov. Palin is no other than John McCain. Would not put it past him.

Also, people forget she didn't ask for this. The GOP went to her and asked her to be the running mate. She's proven herself time and time again she is the person who really excited the party. When McCain failed she would bring the party back up, then they dump on her and treat her like this.

Shameful I say.
Chris isn't running for office...LOL

chris coumo up next on hannity am

Chris was so tasteless and had the nerve to say he was trying to have dialouge...nm
I think the NYT has the right to publish any information that they can verify. If it is classified information that should not have been known to the public, the question is who leaked it?

I've heard the jist of the story but I need to read the NYT article.
This is great. I liked the original by Chris Martin sm
and Cold Play the first time I heard it. Chris Martin wrote this song for his wife Gwenyth to console her after the death of her father, when you lose something, you can't replace...I will try to fix you...tears stream down your face, when you lose something you cannot replace, tears run down your face and I will fix you... It truly sounds like he was with his wife during a really dark time for her. Really touching.
I just heard that Chris Dodd also wants to attach...
a proviso for some money to be given to certain groups...ACORN being one of them. What is up with that?? ACORN is being sued right and left for voter fraud.

The rationale for reducing the capital gains tax (for a short term, not permanently) is so that investors will be stimulated to invest again, and infuse some of THAT money back into the markets that will perhaps take at least SOME of that off ALL of us. I don't have a problem at all with a temporary reduction or even suspension of capital gains tax for a couple of months if it will reduce how much we are all on the hook for. Just my opinion.
and who is #2 on the receiving end of Chris Dodd and his cronies???? OBAMARAMA, that's who. sm
You can't call out one and not the other. If anything, they are BOTH guilty.
And who is #2 on the receiving end of Chris Dodd and his cronies???? OBAMARAMA, that's who. sm
You can't out one and not the other. They probably BOTH are guilty, but accuse them both, not just McCain.
Followed quickly by Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. nm
nm
wrong...barney frank, chris dodd, and the
Dem members of the Banking and Finance Committee are wholly responsible. John McCain cosponsored a bill in 2006 and described this exact scenario, as did Allen Greenspan and John Snow (treasury secretary). The Dems killed it in committee. Voted to a man against it. And here we are. Nice try...no cigar (no pun intended). This is one that you can't lay on the Republicans. The facts do not support you on this one. No matter how much you deny it. And deny it you will. You can't help yourself.
Fannie and Freddie....Barney Frank, Chris Dodd...
you left them off your list. The two MAJOR players. Who got the most donations from fannie/freddie? Barack Obama and Chris Dodd. Obama got more from them in his 3 years than other senators did in 20. You do the math and follow the money.

Talk about ignorance....Chris Dodd, Barney Frank....
Fannie Mae...ring any bells? The housing crash is what started this downhill spiral. Talk about snorting Kool-aid...you must have an IV. O starts talking, brain stops working.

The war has cost us plenty...as did 9-11. But the economy didn't go south until the fannie/freddie debacle which started the dominos on wall street falling because of the "bad paper." So you can rant and rave all you want to about the war...your duly elected Dems in Congress screwed us ALL over. But go ahead, blame Bush...this is all on YOU folks. YOU voted them in. I had nothing to do with it...lol. I believe it is called stewing in your own juices...even if you are so in denial you don't realize it...but oh well...no surprise. :)
Listening to Harry Reid/Chris Dodd news conference...

I don't know how they can stand up there and lie through their teeth like that...blaming the White House and Republicans for this financial debacle.  They know that is a lie.  They know, especially Chris Dodd, was central to this.  Also mentioned Barney Frank.  Good grief.  The hypocrisy is staggering.  They should be talking about getting us out of this mess....just yesterday they were saying don't play the blame game.  Telling McCain not to politicize it while they are politicizing it.  That man makes my skin crawl.

And saying there was a "deal" and McCain blew it up.  The only "deal" was among senators...the only house person present could not negotiate.  He just had to listen.  If they had the plan and had gone to the house with it, then the house would have blocked it there and hours if not days would have been wasted.  Amazing the gall of some folks.  Ridiculous!!!

Why can't they all stop the political posturing and just fix this mess.  The House is only reacting to the onslaught of emails from their constituents saying protect us here, we don't like this carte blanche 700 billion.  I for one am GLAD at least the Republicans in the house said whoa wait just a minute here.

last line of Matthews piece cut off in error. 1 line sm
complained in a letter to his boss that Matthews had shown a pattern of sexism.
Hillary

I've actually been thinking of voting for her if she runs.  A year ago, I couldn't stand her.  I don't know if she's changed or if I've changed, but what I mostly think it is, is that the further right the neocons go, the further toward center she seems to wind up.

As far as respect, let's see... She has the ability to articulately and intelligent form SENTENCES using the English language.  That in and of itself is worthy of much more respect than what we've currently got.

She seems to have enormous strength without being a bully.  I can't recall her telling the rest of the world to "Bring it on."

I'm somewhere between being a Democrat and Republican.  I tend to vote for someone because of issues, not because of party affiliation.  I've registered as an Independent because of that, and I'm glad I did because these days of Republicans and skyrocketing deficits, increasing intrusion of government into the personal lives of American citizens, etc. leaves me wondering just what Republican and Democrat means any more.

Republican seems to now mean a particular, narrow brand of Christianity (rather than a brand of politics), lying as a regular and customary part of doing business with the American people and the world, destroying the lives of people who disagree with them, completely stalling and bringing science to a screeching halt, forcing regime change on weaker countries through war, while showing weakness and backing down from true threats, such as North Korea.

And Democrats -- well, I just don't know any more what they stand for.

Again, as far as Hillary is concerned, she left a bad taste in my mouth when she seemed to put down stay-at-home moms with her comment about choosing her career over staying home and "having teas."  I feel being a mother is probably the most important job there is, and I didn't appreciate that comment.  However, recently she's looking a lot better to me.

I also would like to see more from Giuliani.  I think he demonstrated excellent leadership during the 9/11 tragedy, and he seems to be more moderate when it comes to the personal lives of people.

My DREAM President would have been Colin Powell.  I can't recall seeing such grace, dignity and intelligence in a politician.  He also has firsthand combat experience in foreign lands and might not be so hasty to jeopardize soldiers' lives as someone who didn't have the guts to put his own life on the line yet seems to find the lives of our young people readily disposable for nation building, rather than defending America.

I truly don't think we can do any WORSE than what we have now.  If we can just all hold our breath and tread lightly, we just might be able to survive the next three years, not because of this president but IN SPITE of him.

Hillary just might be someone who would actually put Americans' safety and America, in general, FIRST.  Wouldn't that be a nice change?

If it had been Hillary...

Personally, I don't care what Laura did when she was 17, even if she was driving drunk. But, republicans are relentless and we can't let this go without mentioning the certain media frenzy if this had been Hillary who killed her first fiance.

If it had been Hillary:

Barbara Olson would have a best seller on it.
Ann Coulter would have a best seller on it.
Peggy Noonan would have a best seller on it.
Laura Ingraham would have a best seller on it.
Laura Schlessinger would have a best seller on it.
David Limbaugh would have a best seller on it.
Christopher Hitchens would have a best seller on it.
Dick Morris would have a best seller on it.
Bob Woodward would have a best seller on it.
Christopher Ruddy would have a best seller on it.
Ben Stein would have a best seller on it.
Gail Sheehy would have a best seller on it
Neal Boortz would have a best seller on it.
David P. Schippers would have a best seller on it.
David Maraniss would have a best seller on it.
Mike Barnacle would claim he was in the car with Hillary.
Joe Klein would write a best seller on it, but swear he didn't
Judas Stephanopolous Maximus would have a best seller on it.
Joe Eszterhas would fabricate quotes from Hillary's vagina.
Michael Isikoff would swear the conversation was "off the record"
but then turn around and print every word (plus some he made up.)
Kenneth Starr would write an impeachment referral over it.
Susan McDougal would still have to do time in prison,
and Julie Hiatt Steele would still lose her house.

The vulgar Pigboy would pound on her 15 hours a week until 2009.
O'Reilly would pound on Hillary for months and years.
Hannity would pound on Hillary for months and years.
(and Colmes would remain silent while he did...)
Paula Zahn would pound on Hillary for months and years.
Brit Hume would have weekly "Special reports" called "Accident? You Decide!"
Juan Willaims and Mara Liason would agree Hillary belongs in prison.

CNN would create a spin off network to cover it 24/7.
Tim would mention it every Sunday until he died.
Chris would pound on Hillary for months and years,
but no guest would ever get to answer any questions about it.
Cokie Roberts would mention it every week, then giggle.
Henry Hyde would scream, "The flag is falling."

Richard Mellon Scaife would pay David Brock $80,000 to talk to the cops who were paid $80,000 to say "We thought we smelled liquor, but everyone in Arkansas knows there'd be hell to pay if we wrote this up as a drunk driving accident."
The American Spectator would then run a front page story on it, and somehow Paula Jones would run into the spotlight screaming, "Hillary was trying to kill me - and missed," then the
mainstream media would've made Paula a star on this story instead of the other one.
Then every night, Larry King and his "panel of experts" would search for the connection between Hillary's accident and Clinton's penis - as he always does.

...but since it was Bush's wife, Karl Rove gave orders not to bring it up.

Better keep an eye on Hillary as well...
Ironically, Hillary – who is evidently now opposed to military action – said in February that "no option can be taken off the table" when dealing with Iran.

"U.S. policy must be clear and unequivocal,” she told a crowd of Israel supporters. “We cannot, we should not, we must not permit Iran to build or acquire nuclear weapons. In dealing with this threat ... no option can be taken off the table."

Either she has flip-flopped or she was pandering to the pro-Israel crowd to get their votes. Which was it I wonder?
