Jindal Admits Katrina Story Was False

Jindal Admits Katrina Story Was False

Looks like the game is up.

Remember that story Bobby Jindal told in his big speech Tuesday night -- about how during Katrina, he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with a local sheriff who was battling government red tape to try to rescue stranded victims?

Turns out it wasn't actually, you know, true.

In the last few days, first Daily Kos, and then TPMmuckraker, raised serious questions about the story, based in part on the fact that no news reports we could find place Jindal in the affected area at the specific time at issue.

Jindal had described being in the office of Sheriff Harry Lee "during Katrina," and hearing him yelling into the phone at a government bureaucrat who was refusing to let him send volunteer boats out to rescue stranded storm victims, because they didn't have the necessary permits. Jindal said he told Lee, "that's ridiculous," prompting Lee to tell the bureaucrat that the rescue effort would go ahead and he or she could arrest both Lee and Jindal.

But now, a Jindal spokeswoman has admitted to Politico that in reality, Jindal overheard Lee talking about the episode to someone else by phone "days later." The spokeswoman said she thought Lee, who died in 2007, was being interviewed about the incident at the time.

This is no minor difference. Jindal's presence in Lee's office during the crisis itself was a key element of the story's intended appeal, putting him at the center of the action during the maelstrom. Just as important, Jindal implied that his support for the sheriff helped ensure the rescue went ahead. But it turns out Jindal wasn't there at the key moment, and played no role in making the rescue happen.

There's a larger point here, though. The central anecdote of the GOP's prime-time response to President Obama's speech, intended to illustrate the threat of excessive government regulation, turns out to have been made up.

Maybe it's time to rethink the premise.

Bush admits to directing cheney to discredit Joe Wilson.

At the time, officials told said that Plame's outing resulted in *severe* damage to her team and *significantly hampered the CIA's ability to monitor nuclear proliferation.*  I guess personal kindergarten style paybacks are more important to Bush.  Just remember Bush's role in all this when he declares yet another war on Iran.

Bush Told Prosecutors He Directed Cheney to Discredit Joe Wilson

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/

George W. Bush, 9/30/2003:

I know of nobody -- I don't know of anybody in my administration who leaked classified information. If somebody did leak classified information, I'd like to know it, and we'll take the appropriate action. And this investigation is a good thing.

And again I repeat, you know, Washington is a town where there's all kinds of allegations. You've heard much of the allegations. And if people have got solid information, please come forward with it. And that would be people inside the information who are the so-called anonymous sources, or people outside the information -- outside the administration. And we can clarify this thing very quickly if people who have got solid evidence would come forward and speak out. And I would hope they would.

And then we'll get to the bottom of this and move on. But I want to tell you something -- leaks of classified information are a bad thing. And we've had them -- there's too much leaking in Washington. That's just the way it is. And we've had leaks out of the administrative branch, had leaks out of the legislative branch, and out of the executive branch and the legislative branch, and I've spoken out consistently against them and I want to know who the leakers are.

Newspaper columnist Robert Novak is still not naming his source in the Valerie Plame affair, but he says he is pretty sure the name is no mystery to President Bush.

I'm confident the president knows who the source is, Novak told a luncheon audience at the John Locke Foundation in Raleigh on Tuesday. I'd be amazed if he doesn't.

So I say, 'Don't bug me. Don't bug Bob Woodward. Bug the president as to whether he should reveal who the source is.'

Reports: Plame Was Monitoring Iran Nukes When Outed
By E&P Staff
Published: May 02, 2006 10:55 AM ET

NEW YORK What was Valerie Plame working on at the CIA when she was outed by administration officials and columnist Robert Novak? MSNBC's David Schuster on Monday said he had confirmed an earlier report that she was helping to keep track of Iran's nuclear activity--not a front and center issue for the White House.

Earlier this year, Larisa Alexandrovna of the Web site RawStory.com, reported that Plame, whose covert status was compromised in the leak, was monitoring weapons proliferation in Iran. At the time, officials told her that Plame's outing resulted in severe damage to her team and significantly hampered the CIA's ability to monitor nuclear proliferation.

On last night's Hardball, MSNBC correspondent Shuster reported that intelligence sources told him thatr Wilson was part of an operation three years ago tracking the proliferation of nuclear weapons material into Iran. And the sources asserted, he said, that when here Wilson's cover was blown, the administration's ability to track Iran's nuclear ambitions was damaged as well.

Washington Post: Commission admits they thought they were being deceived.sm

After C Span aired the 911 Scholars Symposium in LA for 3 days, the questions and information has started to flow.  Looks like some are starting to do some CYA.  There are articles in the NYT, Vanity Fair, and even the Washington Post.  For a change, they are not calling skeptics names.  It is only a baby step, but this has made my day.

Isn't she pretty?
She looks like a normal person too, not a clueless politican who has never paid a bill.
McCain and his wife scare me but I am so excited about her!
I'm pretty sure
that this post didn't have anything to do with Obama. The topic is McCain/Contra in this post. I can't stand either of them, but thanks for the advice.
pretty much
it is unlikely that we are ever going to agree, and honestly, I just come here to interact with adults. I just moved here, my husband is deployed and I don't know anyone, so it is nice to "talk" to adults. It is all good natured (on my part anyway) and I really just like to argue

I think you pretty much did that all by yourself. nm

So you just pretty much sent me to ...

the bad place with fire and stuff because of a joke that had absolutely nothing to do with religion based simply on the fact that I am an A... (the one whose name shall not be mentioned).

Pretty sure
Pretty certain that you are going to be standing before God too, right?  Or are u exempt?  Anyway, I bet he doesnt like foul-mouthed witch hunters one bit!  I also bet he doesnt like it when his children start fights and are accusatory to innocent people.  You have a high horse, what is it's name?
Pretty sad but just think
how many ignorant people will come back with.....but he is cutting the budget.  LOL.  All his sheeple will hear is budget cut and they are on board with him as per usual.  If Obama promised to stop farting in an effort to lessen pollution.....his adoring fans would praise him from the highest mountain for all to hear.
Pretty sure that ()
who used to sign herself .-  (dot/dash).  Someone mentioned this a week or so ago and I have to agree.  Same style, similar typos, same strange sentence structure and confrontational attitude.  Anybody else noticing this?
It must pretty convenient
to cut and paste and post the same 1st-grade name calling, hate-filled rant everyday.  It cuts out time spent in the creativity process...
Seems pretty important to me
Well, if his trustee is saying Frist was updated regularly on his blind trust, I kind of think that is something.  It is a formal investigatinn by the SEC.  I kind of think that is something.
Seems pretty on target to me :o)

Tongue in cheek..but I gotta tell ya, some of this is true, from my experience living in NY, CA and VA.

Subject: Dear Friends, (Retirees and Those Planning to Retire. Here are some very helpful tips that are just too true to ignore:

As  we all know, when we hit retirement age we come face to face with the fact  that it may be time to relocate. The big question is: where to? Here are some tips.

You can live in Phoenix, Arizona where.....You are willing to park 3 blocks away because you found shade. :-)You can open and drive your car without touching the car door or the steering wheel. You've experienced condensation on your butt from the hot water in the toilet bowl. You would give anything to be able to splash cold water on your face. You can attend any function wearing shorts and a tank top. Dress Code is meaningless at high schools and universities. Picture lingerie ads. You can drive for 4 hours in one direction and never leave town. You have over 100 recipes for Mexican food. The 4 seasons are: tolerable, hot, really hot, and ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!!  You know that dry heat is comparable to what hits you in the face when you open your oven door.

You can Live in California where...You make over $250,000 and you still can't afford to buy a house.  The high school quarterback calls a time-out to answer his cell phone.  The fastest part of your commute is going down your driveway.  You know how to eat an artichoke.  You drive your rented Mercedes to your neighborhood block party. Then someone asks you how far something is, you tell them how long it will take to get there rather than how many miles away it is.

You can Live in New York City where..You say the city and expect everyone to know you mean Manhattan. You have never been to the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building. You can get into a four-hour argument about how to get from Columbus Circle to Battery Park, but can't find Wisconsin on a map. You think Central Park is nature, You believe that being able to swear at people in their own language makes you multi-lingual. You've worn out a car horn. You think eye contact is an act of aggression.

You can Live in Maine where... You only have four spices: salt, pepper, ketchup, and Tabasco. Halloween costumes fit over parkas. You have more than one recipe for moose. Sexy lingerie is anything flannel with less than eight buttons. The four seasons are: winter, still winter, almost winter, and construction.

You can Live in the Deep South where...You can rent a movie and buy bait in the same store. Y'all is singular and all y'all is plural. After five years you still hear, You ain't from ' round here, are Ya? He needed killin' is a valid defense. Everyone has 2 first names:  Billy Bob, Jimmy Bob, Mary Sue, Betty Jean, MARY BETH,  etc.

You can live in Colorado where...You carry your $3,000 mountain bike atop your $500 car. You tell your husband to pick up Granola on his way home and he stops at the day care center. A pass does not involve a football or dating. The top of your head is bald, but you still have a pony tail.

You can live in the Midwest where...You've never met any celebrities, but the mayor knows your name. Your idea of a traffic jam is ten cars waiting to pass a tractor. You have had to switch from heat to A/C on the same day. You end sentences with a preposition: Where's my coat at? When asked how your trip was to any exotic place, you say, It was different!

AND You can live in Florida where...You eat dinner at 3:15 in the afternoon. All purchases include a coupon of some kind -- even houses and cars. Everyone can recommend an excellent dermatologist. Road construction never ends anywhere in the state. Cars in front of you are often driven by headless people.

Wow! Looks pretty good.

I love the sentence, *Are you tired of boards that claim to stand for Free Speech but delete your posts or ban you outright for speaking your mind?*

Thanks, gt!

That's pretty much the point isn't it? SM
Why call someone a racist for not being fond of the French?
This was pretty good.
I agree about the dress, though.  It looks like the same one she wore on the Tonight Show.  Must be her *Today/Tonight* dress.  With her *best-selling* (paltry) 48,000 in book sales, you'd think she could afford to buy another dress.
pretty funny huh?

She's telling other people to pay attention to posts when she can't do it herself.

Yeah pretty much.

It would be a lot funnier if it wasn't so true.  :-(

I wonder why Bush refuses to go after Bin Laden now, after all that **wanted, dead or alive** rhetoric he spouted.  I seriously wonder if Bin Laden is on Bush's payroll.

Pretty much practice
But I have to admit, even with all that practice I'll never be a master like you are.  I'll always be just an amateur compared to you.
This is pretty interesting.
What stands out to me the most I think is that those polled still feel that the republicans are better at handling the terrorist problem than the democrats. How is that at all possible? Especially in light of the plethora of information about how poorly it has been handled from the get go? It shows just how deeply inset certain belief systems are regardless of whether or not they are true or based on fact.

Example of that is Huckabee. How naive can people be? This guy is running on his religion and people are swallowing it, especially the so-called values voters, when in actuality he is probably the most untrustworthy and least capable.

Go figure.
Yes, it is pretty childish....
if you don't like the way I play, get out of my sandbox. Very Democratic and liberal of you, piglet.

Not much of social value from conservatives? Emancipation proclamation? Voting for women and African Americans? Nah, from YOUR point of view, I guess that is not much. I believe they have all been sustainable. But if course, doing one of those things involved fighting a war to bring it about. And we all know liberals (well except John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson...uh...) RUN from wars, right??

Not willing to compromise one iota, and doing the piglet post of disdain for anyone who dares disagree with you.

Grab your hoe and torch and head for the castle. That is about the extent of your idea of a "social movement." And have the nerve to say you have the welfare of the common man in your heart. Pull the other leg, piglet.
So pretty much Jesus would be like,

that's hilarious.  Of course I can't say what He would do or say and neither can you, but didn't He teach to take care of those that can't take care of themselves?  It is very hypocritical of you to talk about a country that murders millions of babies being morally wrong and in the same breath say it's okay let children die or suffer because their parents could not afford (or chose not to purchase) good healthcare.  It's not the kids' fault if they got irresponsible parents or parents that were not in the upper-middle class.  Should they suffer for their parents' sins/shortcomings?

Now this is pretty funny!

Got to love those tough questions!

The only possible way is pretty far-fetched...
but if his goal was to remain as President, he would not have to start a war. Could declare a national state of emergency. The President (any President) can declare a national state of emergency and at that point they can do just about whatever they want, including conceivably cancel a national election. There is provision for that in law. However...I can't see Congress allowing that. If he did that, he would be impeached fortwith (and so he should be if he tried something like that, if ANY President tried it). And absent a bonafide national emergency, I sure can't see him going down that road. That much of a cowboy he ain't.
that's pretty funny, especially like the hug
x
You seemed pretty proud yourself
Like the other poster said, own up or take cover. Defend your candidate's views and positions or bash, slam ad slur to an audience of 1.
Pretty funny!

haha.... that's pretty LOW! That should be
(Though the latter does more closely resemble my own yearly income......)
This pretty much sums up most

My Answer To The President is a good read.......

Pretty funny really.......
Obama making a statement earlier that "The acorn doesn't fall far from the tree".   Well, I guess he's right.  ACORN didn't fall far from his tree.  Matter of fact, he helped that ACORN get bigger and bigger and bigger!
That's pretty cool....sm
to have something you're that passionate about, in your life. For me, it's the wildlife that I see out my window every day.

I was at our last farmer's market for the season the other day, and thought of you immediately, because the gal there, when I asked about this beautiful, large green gourd, what it was called (I thought it might be a certain kind, because it was round and smooth and tall)...and she goes, "It's a gourd, it just grew that way. You wait until it dries and then you can do all sorts of things with them, use as decorations, and even paint them...."

And I go to myself....gourdpainter!!!!

Pretty much shows
what we could expect from his administration.  More lunacy.  He wanted to win at all costs and he no doubt thought Palin would deliver Clinton supporter's votes.  After that fiasco how anyone can think he will turn this country around is beyond me.
seems pretty selfish....
no rights for the father....
Pretty hypocritical
that you can't thank one without smearing the other.
This pretty much sums up Mrs. M

This is one of her posts:  "Obama won by majority and It's time for people to back the new president and be patriotic."

Only a terrible racist person would suggest that we be supportive of our president and be PATRIOTIC!!!

RIGHT?!

But, hey, if you guys allege it, it must be true.

It's pretty simple
x
Pretty disgusting if you ask me
I thought the whole world was going to end if they didn't get their bail-out.  Key point:  Union leaders summoned to Detroit to make concessions.  Lower wages for American workers and the auto employees never made $70 an hour to begin with.  Guess they can look forward to wages competing with Mexican wages.
So pretty much you are interested in
throwing out smears that you are not willing to back up with facts, citations or examples and baiting other posters. You also don't seem to care how ignorant you sound, given the fact that it is patently clear you don't have a clue as to the meaning of racism or bigotry. You also seem quite unwilling to engage in any meaningful debate on the so-called pot-shot issues you fire off in your drive-bys. To top it all off, so far you have shown yourself to have a fairly juvenile, shallow, superficial and limited form of thinking.

Should you decide to step up to the plate and actually post something of substance you are willing to exercise some intellect over, I'll be more than happy to accommodate. In the meantime, I'd rather use my time more productively reading up on the latest news.

It should be pretty obvious

I really think all of these "bail-outs" were actually a long time in the planning and went off according to schedule.  The way the Wall Street bail out was handled, just give them the cash, no oversight, a 2 page application, etc. tells it's own story.  The salaries and bonuses given to the CEOs is nothing short of disgusting.  Yet people have the unmitigated gall to whine because union workers earn a decent living.  Working class people should be squarely behind the UAW workers and AGAINST the CEOs who are begging for our money while flying to the begging table in their private jets.  Heck most of us when we fly have to take coach class.  First class is reserved for the like of the Victoria Olsteens.  At least they aren't rich enough YET to afford their private jet.

Your husband may as well go on down to Washington and ask for a handout but I doubt he'll get it.....now if the real estate commission in your state went, they MIGHT get a bail out that wouldn't even trickle down to your husband.  Bush and Cheney care not one iota for common people.....witness their "so what?" and "so?"  Now that their days are numbered they can say what they want and still there are those on this board who can't see them for what they are.  CROOKS!!!!!

She seems pretty secure to me.

I know those annoying "FACTS" can get in the way of someone who is trying to spread fodder that contains little or no truth. She seems to have inner peace, and many of her posts on this board are pretty funny too so I guess her sense or humor and "joy" are intact as well. Unlike you, I won't be arrogant enough to pretend to know anything about her personal life. Just how do you know she doesn't have a "life of joy with true friends and family"? And how do you know she doesn't have a life other than one that "consists of I guess just basically having a life other than transcribing, hating Bush and proclaiming to be an atheist."? Have you ever met her? How many family members does she have?  How many friends does she have? What color is her hair?  Her eyes? Does she prefer puppies over kittens or both or none? How tall is she? With the "knowledge" you claim to have, those questions should be pretty easy for you to answer, and I look forward to reading those answers.

I'm pretty sure you don't get your healthcare from
nm
No, actually I'm pretty happy, but...
...thanks for asking.
It is pretty sad and pathetic
that people are suffering daily and are losing hope and all our congress can do is pass bills full of pork for ignorant things like why pigs smell.  It is pretty obvious to me why many people are participating in the tea parties.  Obviously a lot of people have a problem with this.  This isn't extremist behavior.  This is telling our government to stop the crazy spending.  This is just WAY out of hand.  For people who don't get this....I just feel sorry for you.  Obviously you would rather bankrupt the country and continue to praise Obama than to hold our government accountable for all the out of control spending that they are doing.  You have no problem bringing up the amount of money Bush spent in 8 years but when it comes to facing reality about Obama and the amount he has spent in a few months and how it exceeds any spending Bush did....you turn a deaf ear and a blind eye.  Double standards.  I don't care who is doing the spending whether it be dems or pubs.  We don't have any more.....both sides need to stop spending....PERIOD!
That's pretty funny!
I couldn't help but laugh when you asked where in MS I am from because no, MsMT did not stand for MS but I am from MS. The Meridian area...... are you familiar with that area?
